Romesh Ji

Thanks for your recent activity on the Salil Chaudhary forum. Some very nice songs in Maya. You might be surprised to know I had never heard Aye Dil Kahan Teri Manzil.

I have never heard of Diwen Mukherji and he sounds like an uncannily good copy of Hemant Kumar (better than Subir Sen).

Do you have any info on this singer and also are there any other voices like Hemant's - apart from Diwen and Subir Sen?

Kind Regards
Faraaj

In the male version of the song, the lead voice in the backing vocals is Lata Mangeshkar's. The soprano backing that Salil C used in many of his songs was normally supplied by his wife, Sabita Banerjee (e.g., "jaanwaale sipaahii se puuchho"); for this song alone, you have Lata doing the honours.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Faraaj bhai,

We are all surprised to know that you had never heard one of Salilda's most brilliant compositions, namely "ai dil kahaa.n teri manzil" ! Anyway, I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed both the versions now.

Dwijen Mukherjee has been a very famous singer in Bengal since the '50s and has been a close friend of Salilda. Dwijen is more well known in Bengal for his Rabindrasangeet, although he had also performed some wonderful modern songs. Salilda had used him extremely well and he had recorded at least 10 Bengali songs composed by Salil.
Much before Maya, he recorded his first hindi song for Salilda in Madhumati("tan jale man jaltaa rahe"), Honeymoon ("duniya na dekhe"), Sapan Suhane ("naam mera nimmu" and "nazar se mil gayee nazar") etc.

Many thanks for these wonderful songs. If I remember it correctly there were 9 songs in Maya in total. It seems like your album somehow missed :

1. Shanam tu chal diyaa rastaa - Rafi
2. Jaadu daale hai machal machal - Asha & chorus

Rishi Bhai

I've seen Madhumati a dozen times and its probably my favourite indian film. I picked up a VCD about 10 years ago and was surprised to see it include a sequence I had never seen in my video version. The sequence had Johnny Walker sing Jungle Mein Mor Naache. Now you mention another song which again was in neither of the two Madhumati versions I've seen....can you please upload and give some background on this song.

Thanks
Faraaj

Faraaj Bhai,

I must confess that I had never seen this VCD which contained "jaungle mein mor nachaa". However, I do have an LP of "Madhumati" and surprisingly it has all the songs including "tan jale" and "jungle mein".
I will record that song tomorrow and upload it.

Thanks for the upload. Nice song. Dwijen's voice is quite good - a mix between two better known bengali singers: Hemant and Manna Dey.

Madhumati is quite tightly paced and its surprising to find other songs in the original album. I can only wonder at whether all of them were filmed and which points in the movie they were expected to be inserted.

Having checked Earthmusic, I find four songs I was unaware of in the video version I saw growing up:

1- Kaanchle Kaanchi Laayi Laajo - Asha, GM Durrani, Sabita, Shailendra
2- Naye Naye Raja Ki Nayi Taksaal - Asha, Ghulam Mohd?, Sabita
3- Tun Jale Mun Jale - Dwijen + Chorus
4- Jungle Mein Mor Naacha - Rafi

#1 & 2 could possibly be the same song. Never heard it. #3 you've uploaded - has any member seen it on video? #4 was picturised on a drunk Johnny Walker in the third quarter of the film...

Kind Regards
Faraaj
