I think Naushad sahab relies heavily on the classical raags, he is very adept in this field, his songs are appealing as they come from our soil, our music heritage. I have also heard some of his songs of late 70's or so, they are just ordinary. I don't see very big genius in him.
Music directors which I feel are genius are those, who most often present very remarkable tunes which are no part of our classical music ( infact some tunes are so melodious that I suspect them come from the blues). Standing most tall among these are I think is Madan Mohan, just outstanding stuff he produced. I also personally very much like Ravi and Shankar jaikishan as well. Shankar Jaiskishan ofcourse not as original as Ravi or Madan Mohan, but they also has added quite remarkable tunes to the Indain film music. This is what I think, it might be wrong, but this is what I see? What do you think? ============================== For me, listening to Mohammad Rafi is an addiction! |

Yes, according to me those who can adapt to changing times are real geniouses. Ofcourse this means... giving melodious music that can stay times.

True, Madan mohan and ravi are two MDs one would readily associate with melody. Personally I regard Roshan as good as any one else. Rafi-Roshan combination has produced some of the most unforgettable scores. I dont know if I sound right, but I have always felt that Ravi's music has some sort of "signature" that stands out and nine out of ten times I could hear a tune and tell that this one was done by ravi. A great MD who has not recieved the recognition he deserved. He has done a lot of great work in Malayalam movies in that last ten years. I remember reading some time back Ravi stating that Rafi was his favorite and the only one who could do full justice to his tunes. Any comments.

A very interesting point came to my mind and I am sharing it with you. The songs based on classical raags have longer life ( rather immortal) thats why I think that Naushad's songs have a property that they look fresh every time you listen to them. But thats not exactly the case with others. I think here Naushad stands out.
Secondly don't you think that Naushad's songs for Lata ji are better in terms of melody than his songs for Rafi sahab? ============================== For me, listening to Mohammad Rafi is an addiction! |

You know I really get caught on to Ravi's music real fast. So many tunes have been so catchy to me - choo lene do naazuk, raaz-e-dil unse chhupaya na gaya, yeh parda hata do, yeh khamoshiyaan yeh tanhaaiyaan, jaan-e-bahaar husn
man there are tons of them sweet sounding melodies same with madan mohan, i really love those 2 composers's tunes and of course naushad's creations are up there too. I remember when i got my 1st naushad cassette (it ws ONLY 2 years ago) such great songs in it, lata and rafi's only. I made a list of Mohd. Rafi songs based on different Ragas. Sharad |

I believe someone else posted a few sites which mentioned ragas used in different yesteryear HFM songs. This was probably last month. But a complete list only of Mohammad Rafi songs would be just excellent.
Bring it on Sharad. zindagi ne kar diya, jab bhi udaas aa gaye ghabra ke hum, manzil ke paas sar jhukaaya, sar jhuka kar ro diye |

Now something about O.P.Nayyer and Shankar Jaikishan. O.P.Nayyer was a Punjabi guy so we feel Punjabi touch in his songs, especially check out 'Naya Daur', most of the songs in this film are based upon Punjabi folk tunes.
Shankar Jaikishan introduced us the one unexplored aspect of Rafi sahab, the 'lively yahoo'. Infact they are the second generation of music directors in Indian film music, they worked hard and brought about very melodious tunes. ============================== For me, listening to Mohammad Rafi is an addiction! |
