Frangipani..welcome. Actually there is a commentary of Suresh Oberoi explaining how the song was recorded at Goel studios for a film which never saw the light of the day...and how it came to be realeased..as a prelude to the main song. If you are interested, i can post it on Rapidshare.. smile.gif

Yes, please, if it not too much of a trouble to post it, I would love to hear any stories related to it. smile.gif From his voice, it sounds like a pretty late recording in his career, isn't it?

Thanks a lot, I'll download it right away. smile.gif

And I agree about the listening experience, at times, just the simple joy of hearing the voice compensates for everything else. I remember a friend of mine who once told me that he would have listened happily if HM would have picked up the phone and shouted at him or even sung a phone book. smile.gif

Frangipani...Couldnt agree more with your friend. For me His voice sounds like all my dreams and hopes...Wouldnt care if He sings Bengali or Hindi...! smile.gif

I am adding two private songs by Hemant Kumar. The lyrics are by Gulzar. The two songs seem to form a continuum but I have the first one labelled as a 1966 song while the second one is labelled as a 1973 song. I am not sure which is the correct date. 1966 seems likely because this is the date given on the Gulzar CD compilation from which I acquired this song; HK's voice, however - especially in the second song - sounds more like the 1970s. (The second song, sent to me by a friend, came encoded at 96 kbps; I have left it as is as any editing will only damage the quality.) Lovely songs both! AFAIK, the music for both is by HK himself.

[The first song appears in the film "Shaque" as a background song, but I remember Pavan Jha telling me - I think it was on an RMIM thread - that the film version was sung not by Hemant Kumar but by one J K Bannerjee.]

Thanks for these...I didn't realise that Hemant Kumar sang till the 70s - of course the voice is no longer the same as the 50s or the songs that SF provided.....nevertheless, I'm hearing Abhi Na Parda Girao and its a nice song....

Yes SF, I agree. Music is a great gift to share. smile.gif

'Gaaon ki rani' is inspired by the Salil Chowdhury masterpiece 'gnaayer bodhu', originally sung by Hemanta and the song which catapulted Salil C to instant fame. I am unfortunately not very fond of the Hindi version, I am still not very sure if it is the lyrics, or the melody or both. sad1.gif

Hi frangipani

Hearing Gaoon Ki Rani and I like it on first hearing. I'd be interested in hearing the Bengali masterpiece you refer to. I don't understand Bengali but am aware of the great reputation of Bengali music. After all, Bengal produced Anil Biswas, Punkaj Mullick, Hemant Kumar, Indubala, Kanan Devi and various other giants....SD Burman, Manna Dey....the list goes on....

Frangipani...Normally what happens is that when a beautiful song comes out in native language...What ever might be the improvement in the next version in any language..we can never get the original flavour. I can totally understand your feelings.
Infact, i wrote something about this..in telugu lyrics page..the song in telugu was brilliant where as the hindi version of Mukesh lacked so much ..which cant be explained.. that was from Milan. But for those who hear Mukesh version for the first time will think that is very good. smile.gif
Hope am clear. Thanks a lot for this wonderful conversation.
Now, will search for that original beauty.."Gnaayer Bodhu". smile.gif

Now, will search for that original beauty.."Gnaayer Bodhu". smile.gif

I'm sorry, Faraaj and SF, I should have uploaded 'gnayer bodhu'. I hope you didn't have too much troble finding it.

Yes, that might be part of the reason. I listened to the songs one after the other after a long time and realised that Salil C's poetry is definitely lost in translation. The Hindi one, while trying to capture the same feeling as the Bangla, does not probably have the right words. On top of that Salil C.s music is missing in the Hindi version, so this one is not even an exact version song. Probably that is why I find the Hindi one not as good as the Bangla.

I just checked the Telegu lyrics thread for the song that you mentioned. I have been discovering Ghantasala's beautiful and graceful voice in the past one year and it is great to get a peek into the lyrics for a change. I try to listen to his songs on Youtube and guess the general feel of the songs from the picturisation, but that doesn't tell me any of the finer details of the song. I loved this one and your interpretaion of it. Thanks for bringing this up. smile.gif

Posted by: simplefable Nov 21 2008, 10:32 PM

Faraaj ...it is okay as long as you have it. smile.gif

Frangipani..Thanks for searching around for the telugu thread..i should have left a link out here. smile.gif
Yes, Ghantasala is the numero uno of telugu films. .His chaste way of pronunciation..along with his depth in classical music are unmatched. Truly a Genius..
As for a layman's interpretation...for one who doesnt understand Bangla, I find the Bengali version of Hemant very endearing...as it has a rawness which was missing from Hindi version...which sounds rather tame.. Just my two pence.. smile.gif

Ohh, SF, I just checked the one that you have uploaded. The thing is though, HM rerecorded some of his early songs at a later date in the seventies or eighties. The one you heard is similarly a later recording. Let me upload the original one that he recorded, you can immediately tell that his voice is much younger sounding and the background arrangement is different. This old one is definitely among one of his best. See what you think. smile.gif

SFji thank you for sharing some rare songs of Hemantda.
Meri awaaz kisi shor mein...... absolutely superb!!!!
Hemantda used to visit his brother-in-law's house very often
in the complex where I used to live on S.V. Road. (Hemantda's wife's sister)
His brother in law was a film director too. Very very warm people.
Though I never got the nerve to speak to Hemantda as a teenager, I used to
see him almost everday and you could help but notice his towering 6 ft. frame
very imposing. Very handsome and very warm - he used to smile always.
And his voice is so unique!!! What a treat to listen to his songs.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Posted by: simplefable Nov 22 2008, 09:03 PM

Jairaj Ji...I adore Hemant. so much so, i do collect his songs in every language because his voice has that special feel in it, as if it is meant for our feelings..I visited Kolkata only one time, to receive my diploma certificate, and i had this idea to visit him..just to see him once. I couldnt as my schedule went haywire..and i had to leave. Just a couple of months after that..Hemant passed away. I keep thinking that i should have courage on that day to go visit him..which was not to be.
Your notes are the nicest ones i have read around...as they are so true and simple..and steal our imagination. Thanks a million for sharing these nice thoughts with us.. bow.gif
