He sings for 93 hoursat a stretch, target Bharat Ratna for Rafi

Vivek Deshpande Tags : Sunil Waghmare, Mohammad Rafi’s legend, Bharat Ratna Posted: Sat Jan 08 2011, 01:10 hrs Nagpur:
Mohammad Rafi’s legend is hard to emulate, and what 46-year-old Sunil Waghmare achieved on Friday in memory of his favourite singer is a Guinness record that his challengers could find hard to erase.
Waghmare sang select Rafi songs for more than 93 hours at a stretch here, becoming a claimant to the Guinness Book record of longest rendition by any individual singer. And all these for a cause: Waghmare says he is doing it more to press his demand for Bharat Ratna for Rafi than the Guinness record itself.
When the Guinness Book managers will certify Waghmare as the new record-holder after scrutinising the recordings done at the auditorium of the local Tilak Patrakar Bhavan, he would have erased the name of the current record holder Swaradhika Dhari of Ahmedabad who had sung for 82 hours and 15 minutes in October 2010.
Dhari had broken the record of another Nagpurian Rajesh Burbure who had sung for 80 hours at a stretch a few months before his (Dhari’s) marathon.
Waghmare, who had earlier set a 101-hour goal, had begun singing at 11 pm on Monday and stopped around 8 am on Friday when he started feeling disoriented. Those attending him at the auditorium realised that he had run out of steam and decided to call off the marathon.
“We took him to a hospital where he has gone asleep,” said Anil Bajaj, the doctor who monitored Waghmare’s health round-the-clock. “We had regulated his diet by giving him juicy fruits in the morning, dry fruits in the afternoon and plain dal with chapatti mashed into it in the evening, avoiding sugar and milk to ensure he didn’t get acidity. He drank only lukewarm water and continuously did gargling in the breaks that are allowed to keep his vocal chords in proper shape.”
In the initial stage, Waghmare, a professional singer in his own small musical group, preferred singing for four hours at a stretch to take a 20-minute break that is allowed under the Guinness rules. Later, he started taking five-minute breaks after an hour each to keep himself going. “During the breaks, we made him lie down in shavasana and on sides for half-a-minute each,” Bajaj said. “He was also given a headbath during some breaks.”
Bajaj added, “We have done all tests on him after admitting him to the hospital; he is fine.”
