Shailendra
Birth: 30th August 1923
Birthplace: Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Profession: Poet, Bollywood Film song Lyricists

Born in Rawalpindi on 30th August 1923 as Shankardas Kesrilal Shailendra, Shailendra was the eldest of the four sons of Parvati Devi and Sri Kesrilal. During his childhood days his family moved to Mathura for good but the accidental death of his mother after the shift caused a deep pain for Shailendra, which almost turned him an atheist.

Shailendra started his career with the orthodox method of joining the government organization and lead his secure life. His job in Indian Railways brought him to the city of Bombay in 1947, when the Indian freedom struggle was at its best. The stereotype and technical aspect of his job was totally out of line with is artistic nature. He spent more of his duty hours writing poetry than toiling in the workshop. His Incharge always used to complain about his working habits and was the cause of general resentment.

Raj Kapoor discovers Shailendra

Shailendra decided to take part in the Freedom struggle in his own style. He used to write verses and fiery poems, which would ignite the masses. His poem ‘Jalta hai Punjab’ was a highlight and when reading out aloud during a public meeting, Raj Kapoor caught eye of him. Raj Kapoor saw an emerging star for Indian history and expressed his desire to buy the poems Shailendra has written for his new production. Shailendra, the young patriot blood refused to do so. But due to some domestic reasons and responsibilities, Shailendra approached Raj Kapoor and agreed to his terms. His first project was ‘Barsaat’. ‘Barsaat’ is one of the musical hit of the last century.

Shailendra had best of his association with Shankar-Jaikishan, but shared a equally pleasant rappot with musical giants of those days, like Salil Chowdhary (Madhumati), S. N. Tripathi, (Sangeet Samrat Tanseen), S.D. Burman (Guide and Bandini) and Pt. Ravi Shankar (Anuradha).

He won the Filmfare award for Best Lyricist thrice. Out of the three two were won in consecutive years. The first came in 1958 for the song ‘Ye mera deewanapan hai’ from the film Yahudi, and the second in 1959 for the evergreen ‘Sab kuch seekha hamne’ from Anari. In 1968 Shailendra won it again for the third time for ‘Main gaaun tum so jaao’, from 'Brahmachari'.

Shailendra considered his life as his real poetry. He used to derive inspiration from his walks along Juhu beach every morning. He wrote songs for almost all occasions of life, let alone ordinary situations. Those lyrics were vibrantly alive, in the sense they went far beyond the context of the film situation for which they were intended, and lived on long after the film itself had passed from memory. There is a Shailendra song for any emotion, any situation, from birth to death, such was his versatility.

Shailendra's end days

It is quite ironical that for the man who loved life so much, the spectra of death always haunted him. He was obsessed by death. There was no fear involved, but a kind of helplessness drew him towards it. His producing Teesri Kasam caused him several heartaches and it was also the ultimate cause of his death. But what bothered him was not the film's failure at the box-office, but that his investment in friends he trusted and loved went wrong. Shailendra was admitted to the hospital on December 13 1966, but on his way he decided to stop at the famous cottage at the RK Studios to call on Raj Kapoor, where he promised R.K. that he would complete the lyrics for ‘Jeena yahan marna yahan’ for Mera Naam Joker. That was one promise he could never keep, for Shailendra died on the following day, which also happened to be R.K’s birthday. Reading the following lines from 'Anari' can see his obsession for death:

"Ke mar ke bhi kisi ko yaad aaenge
Kisi ke aansuon mein muskuraenge
Kahega phool har kali se baar baar
Jeena isi ka naam hai"

Lyricist Shailendra is most remembered for his outstanding achievements with Raj Kapoor and Shankar Jaikishan in almost all the R.K. films. His death on December 14, 1966 saw one of the leading lights of the film industry extinguished.

Nice article & informative too.

I'm not one bit well versed with poetry, lyrics, etc., but I feel that Shailendra has been the finest lyricist of the Hindi Film Industry. There may have been greater poets but Shailendra's lyrics seemed to fit the situation like a glove. Some more additions in the already imposing list:

Sajan re jhoot mat bolo - Teesri Kasam
Ab ke baras bhejo bhaiya ko baabul - Bandini
Koyi lauta de mere beete huye din - Door gagan ki chhaon mein
Haye re woh din kyun na aaye - Anuradha
Mere saajan hain us paar - Bandini
O jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aana - Bandini
Raat ne kya kya khwaab dikhaaye - Ek gaaon ki kahani
Zindagi khwab hain - Jaagte raho (astonishing!)
Jalte hain jiske liye - Sujata
Kaali ghata chhaye - Sujata
Sun mere bandhu re - Sujata
Suhana safar aur yeh mausam haseen - Madhumati
Zulmi sang aankh ladi - Madhumati
O sajna barkha bahaar aayi - Parakh
Kaise din beete kaise beete ratiyan - Anuradha
Suno chhoti si gudiya ki lambi kahani - Seema
Tu pyar ka saagar hain - Seema
Dharti kahe pukaar ke - Do bigha zameen
Machalti aarzoo - Usne kaha tha
Gori baabul ka gharwa - Char diwari
Kaise manaoon piyawa - Char diwari
Neend pari lori gaaye - Char diwari (my most favourite lori)
Jaanewaale sipahi se puchho - Usne kaha tha
Chhota sa ghar hoga - Naukri
Ik chhoti si naukri ka talabgaar hoon main - Naukri
Arzi hamari marzi tumhari - Naukri
Chhoti si yeh duniya - Rungoli
Din dhal jaaye - Guide.

There must be many more that I have missed out.

Linking Shailendra's success with Raj Kapoor or Shankar Jaikishan is a tad unfair. Bimal Roy & Salil Chowdhury (and SDB) have equally beautiful songs penned by this great lyricist. Of course the box office value of RK & SJ and their contribution to his fame cannot be disregarded for a moment. They created the pedestal on which Shailendra could show the world, his talent:-the film being a hit or a non-hit.

Looking forward to inputs from knowledgables.

Regards-Archie.

Archie bhai thnx for this list

best thing abt Shalaindra was that he was made to give his best within the limits of tune. And every time he gave excellent performance.

both SD and SJ had tunes made befor the lyrics ,giving little scope for the lyricist to show his talent.

of all SD-shailendra songs i like Guide songs alot
specially the song " aaj fir jeeni ki tamana hai".

only weak point with shailindra was his weak urdu(as comp to other urdu shayars) that s why many of the urdu backgorond films were not given to him.

with Shankar jaiksihan shalindra mostly worked with shankar.

Four more:

mukesh-ji in anari for sj & madhumati for salil-babu.
lata-bai in aah & raat aur din for sj

Most of the songs are quite common & I'm aware that the moderators may not like so much of server-space to be gobbled up. My advance apologies. However, these gems showcase the utter talent of this great lyricist. Whether he knew urdu well or not was immaterial as he was the finest ever when it came to movie-lyrics to suit a situation. Also, he was unparalleled in setting poetry to a pre-determined tune.

Many, many thanks for the Ab Ke Baras classic penned by Shailendra.
It is said that Asha-tai was moved to tears after singing this song, and one can see why.

Hasrat Jaipuri said once in an tv-interview that Shailendra was the best lyrcist of Bollywood, no doubt he said.

Yes. The story goes that Karta, in order to get Asha-tai in that emotional frame of mind told her to think about her family & the personal problems that she was going through at that time. Asha-tai, who had already taken a few takes of the song without her & Karta's satisfaction was so emotionally moved after Karta's suggestion sang this number with an emotional outpouring that has rarely been matched in HFM.

Shailendra's magical lyrics, Bimal Roy's bewitching picturisation along with Karta & Asha-tai's genius has really made this song immortal.

Not for nothing were those the golden days of HFM.

Yup, as Archie said, she did cry before the song, don't know about after. You know, the wily SDB deliberately made her cry, telling her specifically to think about the times when her hubby would not allow her to meet her brother.
Thanks, Archie, for reminding us once again that behind every great song, there's an element we almost always ignore... the lyrics, and their creator.

Dear Friends,

Power of simplicity is well defined by Shailendra Mahan.

Shailendra Mahan, emotional & simple hearted lyricist. Simplicity in thoughts , deeds & words made his creations immortal. All his songs, mutely pronounces his name.Even
‘Jogii Jabse Tu Aaya Mere Dwaare’ was written by Gulzar under his guidance , reflects his image.

One small example of his capability of writing a song (as told by Amit Kumar s/o Kishor Da in a TV interview)….

Kishor Da at his residence, was discussing with Shailendra about a scene of his film ‘Door Gagan Ki Chaaon Mein’, suddenly a tune came to his mind & he started it with -la la la laaa , using tea-table like ‘dholak’. Sahilendra heard it, set his mind & took his diary & pen, asked excuse of few minutes & sat down on the staircase of main door of the bunglow, with in 15 minutes he came back to the room where Kishore Da was still playing his tune on the table, He put down his diary in front of Kishore Da & asked … now please sing the song. After reading the song, Kishore Da ‘Hairaan’ , he stands up & embraced Shailendra.

Dosto, the song was….

Koi Lautaa De Mere, Biite Hue Din
Biite Hue Din Vo Hay, Pyaare Pal Chhin
Koi Lautaa De ...

Main Akelaa To Na Tha, The Mere Sathi Kai
Ek Aandhii Si Uthii, Jo Bhi Tha Leke Gai
Aaj Main Dhuundhun Kahaan, Kho Gaye Jaane Kidhar
Biite Hue Din Vo Haay, Pyaare Pal Chhin
Koi Lautaa De ...

Mere Khvaabon Ke Nagar, Mere Sapanon Ke Shahar
Pii Liyaa Jinake Liye, Mai.Nne Jivan Ka Zahar
Aise Bhi Din The Kabhi, Meri Duniya Thi Meri
Biite Hue Din Vo Haay, Pyaare Pal Chhin
Koi Lautaa De ...

Dil Shaad Tha Ke Phool Khilenge Bahaar Mein
Maaraa Gaya Garib Isee Aitbaar Mein

It is interesting to note that all the three Filmfare award-wining songs of Shailendra ji were composed by Shankar ji of the Shankar-Jaikishan fame !

Furthermore, it is a rare coincidence that Shalendra ji's first name contained the word `Shankar' and he enjoyed highest level of understanding with his music composer friend of the same name - `Shankar' of the legendry Shankar-Jaikishan duo !!
