Hamara Forums _ Talat Mahmood _ The Magic of the Velvet Voice

The Quiver: Anil Biswas on Talat Mahmood
- the time of discovery
I have always kept an eye open for fresh talents and fresh voices, and it was during one of those try outs that a tall lanky man from Calcutta said he was desirous of acting in films and as he had already sung in Calcutta as Tapan Kumar, he could break through. I sized him up and asked him to sing a song, and as he started off, I was mesmerized. His voice didnt have any classical base, but his voice was such that you just felt like closing your eyes and listening. I asked him to come the next day saying I would give him a song- and he better forget his acting for the time. The next day, as he sang, I was bemused. That beautiful quiver in his voice which had attracted me was missing. I stopped him and when asked about it, Talat replied "Dada, everyone says my voice shivers - I was trying to correct it". I was furious and asked him to get out and get the voice I had chosen - the Talat Mahmood I had chosen. He immediately obliged - and at the end of the rehearsal, I told him, "Thats how you will sing from now" - and he did. From then on he never did look back - at least not as long as I was there.

That song was "Ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal" in "Arzoo" on Dilip Kumar. He became The voice of the Tragedy King and the pathos in Talat's voice so ideally suited the tragic image that Dilip Kumar developed for himself.

Naushad:
from Doordarshan's "Shraddhanjali" programme
"You can fathom how unique Talat sahab's voice is by the fact that there are a thousand copies of Mohd. Rafi, Kishore, Mukesh and others. But Talat sahab's is the only voice in our Film Industry that has never been copied or duplicated ever ! His is a voice that stands apart and is truely inimitable !"

Kishore Kumar:
Illustrated Weekly of India- Dec '87
Such was Talat Mahmood's aura, that Kishore Kumar on hearing Talat once at Anil Biswas's house had remarked, "I think I had better give up singing. How can I dare open my mouth so long as such a perennially romantic voice is around !"

Mehdi Hassan:
From The Hindu- 27th. Sept. '91
"It was through the vocals of Talat Saab that I discovered the goldmine in my throat. His songs like 'Ek main hoon ek meri bekasi ki shaam hai' and 'Husn walon ko na dil do ye mita dete hain' had left a lasting impression on me. It was whilst singing these two Talat numbers on stage in the early years of my singing career, that I held an audience of 10,000 in Pindi spellbound ! Believe it or not, the moment I completed singing these two Talat hits, the Pindi audience showered me with money and in a trice I had collected almost about Rs.14,000 ! All this, was of course, courtesy Talat Saab ! "

Pankaj Udhas:
Voice clip in "Legends - Talat Mahmood" released by HMV
"Whenever there is a discussion on ghazals only one name comes to your lips - that of Shahenshah e Ghazal Janab Talat Mahmood ! I am very much influenced by him and his music. His singing style, his soft velvety voice, his sweet, emotion filled, tuneful film songs, geets and ghazals..... a voice so sweet that you can listen to it for hours on end..... and you get that feeling of sweet nectar being poured into your ears ! "

Ameen Sayani:
Reliving The "GeetMala" lore in 'SCREEN' - Sept 22, 2000
"The Geetmala which was aired from 1952-53 didn’t rank the songs. It only played seven hit songs, without rating them. It was only in 1954 that Geetmala became a countdown show.
I remember vividly that in 1954, the topper of the first countdown show was
Talat Mahmood’s "http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showtopic=40" from film 'Taxi Driver'."

http://www.rediff.com/entertai/2002/jul/03dil1.jpg:
"... There was a uniqueness in his voice which has never been seen in any other singer. His songs touched peoples hearts. When I would act to his playbacked songs I would put in that much more extra effort to match his singing prowess".

Whether it be songs like ai mere dil kahii.n aur chal, koi nahin mera iss dunya mein from Daag or shaam-e-Gam kii qasam, aaj Gamagii.n hai.n ham from Footpath or even Kis ko Khabar Thi from Devdas, the Legend with the Golden Voice proved his mettle time and again while singing for Dilip Kumar and other legends of the movie industry.

Good work Imran. A great effort putin to gather all this scattered information.

Personally I like Jalte Hein Jiske Liye from Sujatha, both interms of song and the picturization. A very simple and innovative way of portrating deepest feelings within one's heart for his sweethrt.

A few hit numbers by the Ghazal King that made a fan out of me.

And yes Pradeep, your personal favourite is also in there.
You can feel the nuance and intonation added in each line with the most subtle touch.

Attaching the lyrics for this amazing number penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri...

Great work, extenok! Thanks for posting this.

I adore some of the songs Talat sahab has sung. Of course Jahan Ara tops the list. Then comes Chhaya, specially "aansoo samajh ke kyon mujhe" and then "zindagi denewale sun". Last but not least "main paagal mera manva paagal"... there's no voice like his. Gotta agree with Naushad on this one.

Thanks again.

Best wishes,
Chitralekha

KCP ji,

Isnt it possible the magazine printed it later? After all it says "...Kishore Kumar on hearing Talat once at Anil Biswas's house had remarked...". Just something that caught my eye.

kcp:

That comment is directly taken from Khalid Talat Mahmood's maintained site http://www.talatmahmood.com/
I probably cannot vouch for the statements veracity. But, I do tend to lean towards the explanation that Chitralekha has presented.

Chitralekha:

I agree with you on "Jahan Ara" topping the list. My favourite from that one would have to be 'Teri aankh ke aansu pee jaun'. Definitely a heart-wrenching track. Not to mention this was probably one of the last movies that had his endearing ghazals.
Madan Mohan, the MD for Jahan Ara and also for Aashiana ('mai.n pAgal meraa manavA pAgal') was a close friend of Talat Mahmood. Adding a brief passage about this taken from www.talatmahmood.com:

".......... Talat first met music director Madan Mohan when Madan came to live in Lucknow for a while. Their love for ghazals made them good friends. In a friendly gesture, Madan promised Talat that once he went back to Bombay and signed on films as a music director he would definitely use Talat's voice. Madan was true to his promise and Talat and Madan teamed up for many hits in many films including Jahan Ara, Madhosh, Ashiana, Haqeeqat and others. They enjoyed a close bond of friendship throughout their lives. "

Another thing to be noted here is the lyrics being penned by Rajinder Krishan, and other wordsmiths like him for the ghazal king, for Madan Mohan's compositions and other MDs as well. It seemed as if in those days either singers/MDs were very particular about the lyrics or it was just a much more civilized world compared to today's standards.

Yes yes...I understand....Kishore sitting at Anil Biswas's place and hearing Talat sahab !!! it must be in the Mid 50's...and it appears in IW after 30 years !!!

anyways ...does anyone has that copy or more details about this particular article, I mean who wrote it/addressed to whom/in what context ??

Posted by: kcp Oct 27 2003, 03:48 PM

Speaking about Talat -AnilBiswas...I just love his duet with Lata from the film Taraana - Seene Mein Sulagte Hain Armaan !!! Kya gaana hai !!! Also the Anil Biswas music, film Do Raaha had a lovely Talat song - Mohabbat Tark Ki Maine....I remember those good old days of Radio when I was glued to it the whole day !!!!

Extenok,

For me the top song from Jahan Ara would be "phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhaayi hai". What a voice and Talat sahab has sung it so beautifully. I have to agree with you about the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan. Truely awesome stuff. "main paagal mera manva paagal, paagal meri preet re, pagle pan ki peed woh jaane bichhade jiss ka meet re" is also gem of a song. Talat sahab ke shabdo mein kitna dard hai jaise aisa hi lagta hai yeh bhaav we khud anubhav kar rahe hai. And he could only sing it when Rajinder Krishan penned such songs. I didnt know he has also written so many of my fav songs until today when I went thru some of his songs list. They dont write songs like those now.. even singers and MDs are not as good as they used to be. Every word had a meaning and the voice of singers would just touch the hearts of listeners. *sigh*

Thanks for the info about Madan Mohan and Talat Mahmood.

Best regards,
Chitralekha

Adding a Few More...

Naushad
-Talat lived in Lucknow and brought the culture of that place with him. He always smiled, never speaking loudly. I never heard him say anything bad about other. Talatsaab?s voice never suited loud song that demanded a high-pitched voice. Shouting or screaming didn?t suit him. So he avoided those kinds of songs. He was a decent man and his voice reflected that decency and sense of calm. When you listen to him. You easily get the feeling that he was a soft-hearted man.

Khalid Mahmood, Talat Mahmood?s son :

-Talat mahmood would listen a lot to Dean Martin and Elvis Presley. The reason was probably that they were also soft singers like him, more into romantic numbers. They shared the same style: their love for good poetry and music

-Shaamein gham ki kasam by Talat Mahmood for ?Footpath? required 54 takes!? in those days one had to give complete retakes, so you can well imagine the level of involvement and commitment he had in his work........

2,dil mein sama gaye sajan-sangdil
3,Tumhari yaad hi dil se bhuja jaye-yasmeen
4,gaya andhera huwa ujala-subah ka thara
some duets as beautiful together with asha,
1,Baharon ki duniya pukare tu aaja-Laila majnu
2,hame haale dil tumse kehena hai-24 ghante
3,do dil dadak rahe ke aur awaz ek hai-insaaf
4,teri nigahomein terehi bahomein-bahana
5,pyas kuch aur bhi badkhadi-lalarukh

What I wanted to hear on this CD I was able to get: to hear Talat-sahab speaking! At the beginning of the concert he has an light-hearted exchange with members of the audience. And between songs he introduces the next song.

The quality of the CD is just fine. I would imagine that any audience that Talat-sahab attracted would have been a sophisticated one, and this one seemed to be no different. Of course, after each of his famous numbers, the audience responded with loud cheers.

I would not suggest that you rush to order the CD. Because in terms of the renditions of the songs themselves, let's remember this concert was held well after Talat-sahab at his prime. Also, Talat-sahab was not an artiste to extemporize or vary/deviate from the original. So, there is no "novelty" in the songs.

Since this CD is being currently marketed, that too by his son, I believe there is an ethics issue to contend with. Let some time pass, and we shall see.

Yes, it is a joy to hear him speak. I recall him speaking in the cd collection titled 'The Silken Voice'. But, I assume, you, of course have already had the pleasure of hearing those recordings.

I understand your comments regarding the sophisticated audience. Even so, the loud cheers implies that at least the sophisticated crowd wasn't snobby. I myself have been ambivalent about categorizing cheering or other such acts as unsophisticated specially under such conditions.

Of course, I'm not assuming or thinking of even comparing Talat sahab's LIVE performance with say, something by Mohammad Rafi. I do agree that the 'novelty' of these being LIVE recordings, as such, is more or less lost, when the listeners don't feel any excitement during the actual concert. Yet, somehow, I seem to think that this concert must've been important and fulfilling for those who attended it. And saw the legend in its entirety, with all the splendour & charm.

As for the ethics issue, I whole-heartedly concur.

I sincerely thank you for taking time out & putting your observations down.

Friends:

Some years ago, when I first came I came across Mr. Khalid Mahmood's internet site about his father Talat Mahmood, I was so impressed that I sent an e-mail to Khalid-sahab. Very kindly he quoted an extract among the messages he had featured at the site.

What is special about the site is that it has been created by a son in honour of a famous father who is admired and loved by innumerable fans of all ages, spread all over the world.

The site has the distinct advantage of access to a vast collection of rare photographs and articles. At no other site dedicated to an artiste, Indian or Western, do we come across so many photographs of such high quality. Talat-sahab must have been photographed even by those who did not care for HFM but surely knew a handsome face!

Talat-sahab was not one of the artistes at the hugely-attended open-air concert I attended in Madras in the late 60's, which featured several of the top singers from Bombay. And perhaps fortunately so. IMHO, to imbibe the flavour of his songs, his singing style, one must be in the midst of a limited audience in the intimate atmosphere of a small auditorium. Fortunately, I later had the opportunity to listen to Talat-sahab in exactly that kind of setting.

On rare occasions, as demanded by our English-language lecturer, I had fulfilled compulsory-attendance requirements and suffered through some amateur performances of Shakespeare plays at the Museum Theatre. But this time it was different. Not only was I there willingly, but infact eagerly looking forward to the event!

Two distinct recollections remain from that evening, so many years ago:

I remember one moment when I felt a tinge of regret and sadness. Talat-sahab announced that he would sing a song from his latest film. His voice then picked up the opening lines, "Phir wohi shaam, wohi gham, wohi tanhaayi hai". To us, "JAHAN ARA" (1964) by then was already an old film! It was evident that in terms of opportunities for film-song recordings, this great artiste's best days were behind him.

After rendering several songs, Talat-sahab left the stage, and his small accompanying music crew played some instrumental pieces of the then current hits of other singers --- totally out of sync with the nostalic tunes that had preceded. The audience became restive. The murmur turned into a chorus of shouts demanding Talat-sahab. We were concerned that his performance was over. The curtain was lowered.

When the curtain lifted again, Talat-sahab was back on stage. And almost as if in answer to the audience was heard the melodious question, "Jaayen to jaayen kahaan?" -- and time stood still for us. An exquisite moment from an unforgettable evening.

Did somebody say, "They don't make singers like that any more"?

Finally, something that I had also been hoping to write about. I would have to agree here with Unni, indeed, Khalid Mahmood's website is a sincere effort and one that has to admired for exactly that. The design and style might not be special in the stylized and fashionable world of internet web designing, but in the sheer amount of information and paraphernalia that it brings to the viewers senses is amazingly overwhelming. I haven't seen any other website of legends giving out such detailed information and that too with such generosity. If Khalid Mahmood's efforts in trying to put as much information about the Velvet Voiced Legend are being appreciated, I will not for a second forget the magnanimous gestures of his in fulfilling song requests put up by every Talat Mahmood fan.

The Velvet Voice of Talat Mahmood is exquisite and like all other things exquisite, requires a certain taste, setting and mood. I might not have been fortunate enough to have seen Talat Sahab in concert. Yet, I know that it is frivolous to expect the same form of immense pleasure and intense delight at hearing the Velvet Voice in the setting of a huge gathering, as I get listening to him in solitude. It is simply impossible.

Unni's experiences make me envious and sometimes I wonder why I couldn't have been born a few decades earlier, to have experienced such endearing treats as he has been blessed with. I feel it is a great loss on my part.
Sir, I thank you from the depths of my heart for relating this experience of an intimate music gathering that you were a part of. Living vicariously, I find it as some form of compensation for me. To think about the experience, something to feel, the Velvet Voice intoxicating my senses with the most subtlest of touches.

They sure broke the mould, if there was one.

A day of tributes to my favourite artistes would be incomplete without the voice of Talat-sahab. Here are three duets with three illustrious female singers. The third one, with Lata-ji, is well-known and might have been u/l'd earlier, but it is not in the Library:

The tracks of the 1962 Bimal Roy film "PREMPATRA" are relatively rare. At least till recently I hadn't come across the full album.

Here are two Talat/Lata duets from the movie. The first one begins with the spoken voice of Talat-sahab reciting the lyrics.

Actually now that the old attachments are bring removed, it is alright if the songs are uploaded again. Older uploads might not be available for download any more. If members request those songs again, it is alright to upload them again. All attachments will be available for only 30 days. After that, they will be removed. Moreover, in a few days/weeks time the Song Library will also go away.

Yes, there are Rules, and from the above you will note they are being implemented.

With the gradual cleaning up of song attachments, eventually there will be no Song Library for members to access previous uploads. Hence, there will be requests for songs previous uploaded, thereby leading to repeat uploads. Further, many of the repeat uploads are of better sound quality.

Unni, thank you for reminding me of another good song. Unfortunately, my version which though appears in the 4th CD of 'The Silken Voice' Collection is also the 'fade-out' version.
Track length is 3min, 17secs. The track fades on the following words:
ishq kee raah mein saahil bhi haen, tufaan bhi haen
iss mein izzat bhi hae, ruswayee ke saamaan bhi haen
meri jaan dunya ke darr se na badal jaana tum
kyunke ab mil ke na milnay ...

If your captured version was from a streaming audio then maybe you would like the one I have. Let me know if you want me to upload. I would suggest we request it from Khalid sahab, better to have the original & complete version, if it truly is available.

My current favourite is 'Aaj Kisine Baaton Baaton Mein', exquisite.

Aaj Kisi Ne Baaton Baaton Mein Jab Unnka Naam Liya
Dil Ne Jaisay Thokar Khayee, Dard Ne Barh Kar Thaam Liya

Raah-e-talab mein chaltay chaltay thak kar jab hum chuur hue
Zulf kee thandi chaon mein baethay, pal do pal aaraaam liya

Deewaron ke saaye saaye umr bitayee deewane
Muft mein tann-asaani-e-gham ka apnay sar ilzaam liya

Ghar se daaman jhaarh ke nikle, wehshet ka saamaan na puuch
Yaani ke gard-e-raah se hum ne rakht-e-safar ka kaam liya

Talat sahab's son indeed takes requests sent to him through his email address. And yes, the songs are posted on his father's website. I'm surprised you weren't aware of this.
The bulk of my collection comes from the uploads at his website (and of course some generous HF members)!

You can find uploads changed almost weekly. Sometimes they stay up for longer, probably due to lack of requests coming through for new songs.

Thanks for the update Mohd. The page hadn't been updated for few weeks now. Good to see some new uploads. I have requested the original version for the Karwaan song with Khalid Sahab. Now anxiously waiting for the upload to show up in a week or two.

The fast version of 'Aa Teri Tasveer Bana Loon' from 'Nadaan' is approximately 3mins 29secs, while the other one is 2min 47secs. I'm guessing there might be an extra verse or just a change in structure of lyrics, will have to give it another listen & put it down on paper.

I hardly ever listen to Talat Mehmood. But, as you are aware, I am in the process of uploading my tapes to MP3. I have found 2 old Talat Mehmood (or I think its him) tapes lying around. Here is one of the tracks. Is it rare or common ? and shall I upload more from these tapes.

Yeh Kya Hai Dhang

Any info would be appreciated.

Posted by: unni Nov 30 2004, 12:30 AM

Just a stray thought.

Strangely, it stems from a topic in another thread, about whether one became a fan of Mohd. Rafi before or after his demise.

I had put in my 2-cents that it is natural that someone like me should be a fan of the singer, for after all, we grew up listening to that voice. Whereas "new" fans are more authentic in their appreciation of the music and the song-rendering, and not carried away by the aura of the star on whom it was picturised, or by the success of the movie. That they would be "put off" by the quality of the old black-and-white picturizations, yet should appreciate the singing.

In a similar vein, I did enjoy the recent colour mega-production "DEVDAS". I was impressed with the colour and the costumes and the dances and the sets. Just by the sheer grandeur of it all!

Did it have any degree of "authenticity"? Did it bear any semblance to the original novel? Hardly.

But then, whereas my daughters loved the new "DEVDAS", they would have no patience with the earlier black & white Bimal Roy version.

I made it a point to revisit the earlier version.

The new version should more aptly been titled "Devi aur Devdasi" --- in my opinion, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit dominated the movie. Shah Rukh playing the role of Devdas, I thought, was virtually incidental.

Whereas, in the old version, two things stand out for me:

Dilip Kumar's portrayal of the role, with the memorable lines, "Kaun kambakht peene ke liye peeta hai?" and the transcendental rendering by Talat-sahab of "Mitua" with hardly any accompanying background music.

Even long ago, the song was special to me. Without even identifying the movie or the star.

Musical milestones and memories are made of such great renditions.

Film: Daak Babu
M. D: Dhani Ram
Year: 1954
Duration: 3:12

This song also appears on the Legends series, Talat Mahmood The Silken Voice collection, CD 2.

Akhtar, you're free to upload, either here or in the Files Section, under Shuklas' Talat Mahmood thread. If you would ever 'surprisingly' feel drawn towards some mesmerizingly beautiful renditions of Talat sahab and would like some recommendations, do let us know.

Extenok-ji,

Usually I would upload, but I reckon most of them are common songs.

Here are some of thier names

-Sunaoon Kisko Afsana
-Bechain Nazar
-Sach Bata Tu Mujhe Pe Fida
-Kah Rahi Hai Dhadkanen
-Tim Tim Tim

Is this the 'Legends' Series ?

Yes, the attached image is the Legend series.
Unni, Mohd or Cinemaniac2 would be the experts to call Talat Mahmood songs rare or common. I am just a greedy collector. Let's just wait for their verdict on these.

By the way, I probably haven't exposed this earlier, but my favourite romantic song by Talat Mahmood has to be 'Bechain Nazar'. If not for the voice then definitely for the simple yet alluring old melody of C. Ramchander. And the words, how can one even hope to weave such beautiful words into such a song.

Madam C, that other song is one fine example of Talat sahab's underrated ability to infuse warmth & romance into a song.

Now to the rescuing part ...

Song: Keh Rahi Hain Dhadkane Pukaar
Singer: Talat, Geeta
Film: Laal Pari
M.D: Hansraj Behl
Lyrics: Asad Bhopali
Duration: 3:17

Aur tere raeshmi aanchal ka kinaara na milay

Imran:

Instead of sending a PM, I am posting this since I also want to run this by Mohd.-ji and other Talat fans.

Madam C., I have to appreciate your collection. You are in possession of some amazing songs. Not to mention, you have some that I don't. Bewafaa - Tu Aaye Na Aaye
Devdas - Mitwa Lagi Re Yeh Kaisi +
Nagma - Milte Hi Nazar Unse
Shikast - Toofan Mein Ghiri

+ I don't seem to have this song. Wehshee says it is a must-have number. So, I'm anxious to see whats the fuss all about.

Sorry for being off the scene & not being able to experience the pleasure of seeing another Talat fan being born in this corner of the woods.

Madam C, you are forgiven, conditions apply, will write soon. wink2.gif

Posted by: extenok Dec 10 2004, 06:12 PM

YM, please find lyrics for this song here. http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showtopic=6383&pid=49325&st=0&#entry49325

For me, the haunting melody of 'Meri Yaad Mein Tum Na Aansuu Bahaana' from Madhosh, created by the young musical genius Madan Mohan from 1951, has to be the first from the tragic songs genre attributed to Talat sahab, which leaves one yearning for more of this velvet voice. If 'Meri Yaad Mein' was the milestone marking the advent of a new age for the Indian Film Music in the name of Madan Mohan. Then 'Teri Aankh Ke Aansuu Pee Jaun' from Jahan Ara in 1964 would have to be the culmination of two geniuses growing individually & collectively, having enthused life & magic onto the silverscreen.

To discover a song of such proportions, serendipitously, is indeed uncanny. Yet you have somehow stumbled onto something of gargantuan proportions, even by a Rafi fan's standards. So, I would warmly welcome you with a warm embrace into that very select group of Talat lovers that this corner of HF provides us with.
Experiencing Talat & his magic for the very first time is undescribable. You have to make a few more discoveries in your own time. We can only recommend, if you would like us to. Enjoying it & appreciating is what you'll have to achieve on your own.

On the topic of Talat Mehmood and Madan Mohan...............

The best part of the Veer-Zaara double CD is CD no. 2 which actually takes us through the process of how the music was evovled. It demonstrates very effectively how the raw tunes of Madan Mohan have been developed to give us some memorable music. Listening to Madan Mohan actually singing those tunes I got the feeling as if many of these were most suitable for the voice of Talat Mehmood and would have created history in Talat's voice just like the "meri yaad mein" and " teri aakh ke aansu" mentioned in the previous post.

Although Udit and Nigam have rendered " mein Yahaan" and " Do pal ruka khwabon ka karava" Talat would have taken them to a different level. Both these songs have the potential of becoming all time classics!

Aakarsh, thanks for refreshing our memory with a great number, the requested song-Ada se jhoomte huwe dilon ko choomtey huwe... from the film- Sindbad the Sailor (1952). However this song was not sung by Talat Saheb. This is in fact an excellent duet by Rafi Saab and Shamshad Begum composed by Chitragupt. I had it in an audio cassette which I lost it . I am also looking for this one and it can be requested in Rafi Saab's forum.

Aakarsh, thanks for refreshing a great number, the requested song-Ada se jhoomte huwe dilon ko choomtey huwe... from the film- Sindbad the Sailor (1952). However this song was not sung by Talat Saheb.  This is in fact an excellent duet by Rafi Saab and Shamshad Begum composed by Chitragupt. I had it in an audio cassette which I lost it .  I am also looking for this one and it can be requested in Rafi Saab's forum.

Mohd bhai, would you have the few lines Talatsaab hummed in Devdas, which went like "Kisko Pata Thha, Kisko Khaba Thhi, Aise Bhi Din Aayenge... Jeena Bhi Mushkil Hoga, Marne Bhi Na Payenge..."
Would be grateful if somebody could upload this...

Posted by: extenok Jan 17 2005, 06:19 PM

I think I've those lines. They were uploaded at his official website. Let me rummage through my unorganized CD collection and get back to you with that, along with the cries of 'Roko, Gaarhi Waalay, Gaarhi Roko ... ... Devdaas ... Devdaas ... "

Posted by: extenok Jan 17 2005, 06:41 PM

From the film soundtrack, yet not too clear.
Would anyone agree with me that this puts to shame all those stupor-filled songs sung by many a singers of today ... trying to imitate Rafi sahab's style ... and in their craze over-looking such a magnificent rendition by Talat sahab.
Amazing little gem from 1955, tucked away for us.

And something interesting on Devdas that I found while searching for the year of release.

QUOTE
When Bimal Roy (the photographer of 'Devdas' later turned director) decided to do the remake of the film his obvious choice fell on the tragedian Dilip Kumar. Dilip Kumar, hesitant to risk comparison with Saigal, was eventually prevailed upon to act. Bimal Roy's 'Devdas' (1955) was technically superior and Dilip Kumar's heart felt portrayal of the tragic lover was highly praised. But his histrionics were in total contrast to Saigal's down-to-earth performance. He could not match the poignancy in Saigal's simplicity. Music director S.D.Burman being conscious of the lasting impact of Saigal songs did not pretend to match them. The songs 'Mitva mitva' and 'Kisko khabar thi' though melodious in the voice of Talat Mahmood did not, unlike Saigal songs, outlive the passage of time.

Unni & other Talat enthusiasts, can you please comment?

Finally, the song.
Song: Kisko Khabar Thi, Kisko Yaqeen Tha, Aise Bhi Din Aayeinge

Imran:

I've had no interest in watching the 1935 version, although I've read and heard good things about it. It would now seem very dated and the cinematic qualities 'primitive'. So, I am in no position to compare the acting performances. Recently, I did watch the 1955 version, to contrast it with the recent "DEVDAS", and I was struck by its authenticity.

Also, I am not a fan of Saigal-sahab or the singing style of those days. I can more easily relate to S. D. Burman's compositions and Talat-sahab's singing.

But, having said that, I would concede the writer's point about "outliving the passage of time".

Saigal-sahab sang only some 175 - 250 songs in his career. But he has acquired a legendary status that is unrivalled. Two of his songs from "DEVDAS" feature among the greatest classics of HFM, "Baalam Aaye Baso" and "Dukh Ke Din". Whereas Talat-sahab's songs from "DEVDAS" are perhaps regarded as just some other good ones from a bigger khazana (700+ ?).

Mitua" is a personal favourite of mine among Talat-sahab's renditions, but fans of Talat-sahab are more likely to cite other songs as his greatest numbers. Whereas Saigal-fans would invariably include 'Balam Aaye Baso".

Posted by: rom Jan 18 2005, 04:36 PM

Thanks, Extenok, for so promptly fulfilling my request!
These few lines, I think, capture grief and longing perfectly. Comparing these to the efforts of current singers is unfair to Talatsaab and, perhaps to a greater extent, to them as well.
I think today's singers are not exposed to the nuances of poetry and song of masters like Talatsaab...
As for trying to ape Talatsaab, it's just as well they don't... the result could only be disastrous, because if one singer from the past was most inimitable, it was Talatsaab.

Now, though I haven't seen any of the versions of Devdas, I'd agree with Unni-ji that the 1955 one would be most compelling... And also with his views that Talat's songs from Devdas are not likely to be ranked among his greatest by his fans.

Disagree on the point of old movies. I like to watch really old movies, and love several of Saigal's songs, like Mein Kya Jaanoon Kya Jaadoo Hei, Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye, Gham Diye Mustaqil Kitna Nazuk Hei Dil, Karoon Kya Aas Niraas Bhayi, Diya Jalao, Madhukar Shaam Hamare Chor, Kaahe Ghumaan Kare, Ik Raje Ka Beta Lekar, Tadapat Beetat Din Nahin, and more.

Unni miyaan, kya kartay ho? Such an awesome piece & you didn't even put down the lines for it. The composer is Naseer Kadri while the words are by Ghulam Rabbani. I'm putting them down here, with a hope that some wanderer who hasn't sampled Talat sahab's rich voice might download the song & enjoy it as much as we do, or maybe even more, who knows.

Aaj Kisi Ne Baaton Baaton Mein Jab Unnka Naam Liya
Dil Ne Jaisay Thokar Khayee, Dard Ne Barh Kar Thaam Liya
Aaj Kisi Ne Baaton Baaton Mein Jab Unnka Naam Liya

Raah-e-talab mein chaltay chaltay thak kar jab hum chuur hue
Raah-e-talab mein chaltay chaltay thak kar jab hum chuur hue
Zulf kee thandi chaon mein baethay, pal do pal aaraaam liya
Zulf kee thandi chaon mein baethay, pal do pal aaraaam liya

Deewaron ke saaye saaye umr bitayee deewane
Deewaron ke saaye saaye umr bitayee deewane
Muft mein tann-asaani-e-gham ka apnay sar ilzaam liya
Aaj Kisi Ne Baaton Baaton Mein Jab Unnka Naam Liya

Pyar Par Bas To Nahin
And here's the last one, another jewel out of the crown of every Talat Mahmood fan's treasure chest, Pyar Par Bas To Nahin. Talat keeps this fine balance of sweet anguish & soul-stirring romance prevalent in this song. Asha plays the treacherous and enticing seductress with her interspersed 'Aahaas', putting so much into a song without even uttering an actual word.

Sahir creating magic here? Is it the rustic charm of Nayyar's music? Is it Talat voicing the lyrics perfectly that does the trick? Or just team-effort that makes this song so marvellous?

Mere Khwaabon Ke Jharonkon Ko Sajaanay Waali
Tere Khwaabon Mein Kahiin Mera Guzar Hae Ke Nahin
Puuch Kar Apni Nigaahon Se Batade Mujhko
Meri Raaton Ke Muqaddar Mein Sehr Hae Ke Nahi

Kahin Aisa Na Ho Paaun Mere Tharra Jaayein
Aur Teri Marmari Baahon Ka Sahaara Na Milay
Ashq Behtay Rahain Khamosh Siyaah Raaton Mein
Aur Tere Reshmi Aanchal Ka Kinaara Na Milay

jab madhumati film ban rahi thi tab talat apne acting career mein vyasta they. salilda ki woh pahli pasand the so unhone is film ke gaanon (esp suhana safar..) ke liye talat ko bulaye. talat could not give him time but he knew that another great mukesh is out of work for sometime. so he recommended his name to salilda. that's how mukesh's career was relaunched (such great's also had tough times ... isiliye unki aawaz mein itna dard tha). mukesh never looked back (thankfully for us).

compare this with kumar sanu and udit narayan spat.

aprakash Ji,

It is said that singers sing from their throat but good singers sing from their heart. I have always believed that when you hear a great singer, you are listening to the voice of their soul. Therefore, just like the soul, they live forever.

It is also said that even if you remove the largest lake from an ocean, it makes no difference to the ocean. In this case, of course, what the world thought was a lake was actually an ocean.

As for the last line in your post, there are a lot of things that happen in this world that I am (blissfully) unaware of.

Here is a nice duet of Sudha Malhotra with Talat Mehmood in the fim
"Sim sim marjina" (this was a sequel to a film called "Khul ja sim sim"
which had music by Hansraj Behl).
This film was scored by A R Qureshi (or the tabla mastro Allah Rakha)
in the year 1958.
THis is a request from Dharamvir-ji.

The Perfect Song: A Myth?

Kisko Khabar Thi - Devdas
Sahir - S. D. Burman

What makes a song perfect? How does a song attain that state of perfection? What amount of time is spent in making a song sound perfect? I can't answer those questions nor can I explain the exact nature of perfection for a song. There is one thing I can do, which is to try and explain what makes a song perfect for me.
Four things: melodic music in keeping with the song's mood & feel, appeal of the tune, lyrics that mean something without sounding contrived and lastly, the singer's rendition.

In keeping with this thread's subject matter, I chose Talat Mahmood's song from Devdas, titled 'Kisko Khabar Thi'.

The mood & feel of the song are in line with the storyline, which requires the sound to be tragic, leaning towards mellowness. The flute use here is remarkable in between the lines. The background music is subtle, proving that less is more!

The lyrics speak of defeat and failure, not in words that you would need a dictionary to understand, but in simple plain urdu, unadulterated by the poetic injustice meted out by some verbose & erudite poets. The language is simple, conveying one thing only - the character's despair.

The onus rests on the vocal chords of the singer, in the end, to bring together the music & the words. A song is alive when the words are written & the music is scored. But it's the singer's rendition that gives it a soul.

Here, Talat shines, delivering a controlled performance where others might have seemed hysteric. Talat instills an unexplainable poise & grace into the song. The pauses are timed to the millisecond, making this seem more like a controlled experiment than a song. But such are the tribulations of achieving perfection in creation!

Talat starts with 'hum jaisay', leaves it hanging in the air, short & suspended. Starts again, afresh, this time stretching 'jaisay' and doing the same at the end of 'barbaad dilon ka'. The thing to note here is that there is variation, but not too much - just enough. The pause between two words in the last line, again, adds effect & weight to the words being said. This is the culmination of the song, 'aaj teri ... mehfil se uthay ... kal, dunya se uthh jayeinge'.

It's magic when a simple musical instrument's use combines with the appropriate words and the singer's voice so effortlessly, gelling together to give you a masterpiece.

Behold, perfection!

You have selected a very apt song for developing the theme, "A perfect song"

Although I must confess that if I would have done a similar exercise, this song may not have been on top of my list. Here I may add that one could perhaps look for a perfect song under various moods and shades. I can think of the following moods / shades to describe the song selected by you. "pathos", "Melancholy" or plain "sadness". The two songs that readily come to my mind (I am certain, there are many more), which have the four qualities described by you, are "Dil Jalta Hai Toh Jalne De" the Mukesh Pathos from Pehli Nazar and the Geeta Dutt melancholy "Waqt Ne Kiya, Kya Haseen Sitam". Perhaps the only additional quality that I could add to Geeta's song is Guru Dutt's superb picturisation, which gives a totally different dimension to this ageless classic.

Your choices of songs are indeed exquisite, no denying that. But this song is being used as an example here, to start a discussion on it & other such songs by Talat Mahmood. If other members decide to add their own perfect songs by Talat Mahmood, it would serve the purpose.

To me this one is perfect song from Talat Mahamood. We shall be uploading all three parts.....

Dwelling upon this theme further and restricting it to Talat Mahmood only, the songs that would be at the top my list, are the three Doraha classics, Tera Khayal Dil Se Mitaya Nahi Abhi, Dil Mein Basake Meet Banake and Mohabbat Tarq Ki Maine. I may also add that two of his popular numbers, Sham - e - Gham Ki Kasam and Jayen Toh Jayen Kahan too fit the bill going by the qualities described by you. The picturisation of the latter is simply breathtaking, Dev Anand at Juhu beach in the backdrop of sun setting over the sea and waves constantly touching his feet; and above all Talat/Sahir/SDB combining to create this immortal melody. Well actually how can one also forget to mention Zindagi Denewale Sun and Shukriya Aye Pyar Tera Shukriya. Even the picturisation of 'Shukriya Aye Pyar' is unforgetable with Rajinder Krishan's lyrics aptly describing the state of mind of Premnath when he discovers that his lady love, Madhubala, is in fact in love with Dev Anand. And I am sure there are many more songs of Talat which can fall in this category.

Rashmiji many thanks for your offer to upload 'Gavaiya' songs. Each of them is a masterpiece.

Interesting to note here that the perfect songs cited by you mostly fall into the moods category of '"pathos", "Melancholy" or plain "sadness"'. I'm sure that wasn't deliberate, unless you were following my lead. Once others start putting up their choices for 'the perfect song', we might see songs from a different shade/mood. Do you think Talat sahab has songs that can be categorized as perfect and yet aren't sad or melancholic?

I admit that I'm unfortunate enough not to have the complete picture when talking about these songs. For me, these songs are simply about the aural experience. The visual representation that you're fortunate enough to narrate is quite an interesting read. Please do add more. Also, what can you tell us about the picturization of 'Kisko Khabar Thi'?

Hoping to read more from your keyboard.

Imran,
I don't understand the technicalities involved in songs recording , but as for as the perfection in rendering is concerned, I find the following songs as the perfect songs among Talat Saab's songs:
1.DIL MATWAALA LAAKH SAMBHAALA PHIR BHI KISI PAR AA HI GAYAA--BEWAFAA

2.TUM KO FURSAT HO MERI JAAN! TO IDHAR DEKH TO LO-----------------BEWAFAA

Sorry, I have seen Bimal Roy's Devdas long time back and can not remember how 'Kisko Khabar Thi' was picturised. But I can recall another of Talat's songs, which in terms of his velvety singing, exquisite lyrics - again by Rajinder Krishan - and enthralling tune composed by that prince among composers - Sajjad Hussain. I am of course referring to 'Yeh Hawa Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni. This song too, in my view ranks at the very top among Talat's perfect songs but should never be seen on screen as director R.C.Talwar makes a complete hash of its picturisation. I am convinved that when this song was created, it was meant for Dilip to appreciate the beauty of Madhubala. Instead the director picturises it in a very unconvinving manner with Dilip and Shammi involved in the sequence. I am sure even till today Sajjad must be turning in his grave how his beautiful composition was wasted by the director.

Imran if u r restricting ur elucidation of "Perfect song" within the premises of visuals , then i am unable to express my views as none of the songs sung by Talat have been a visual experience for me.. sad1.gif

but if considering only the aural representation then i will choose songs most of which fall ,as mentioned earlier, into the moods category of '"pathos", "Melancholy" or plain "sadness"'.
i stongly believe that expressing sadness, pathos in ones voice is a hard task to bring to perception of others ears, and Talat's voice seem to be very-perfect in this.

hope to read more abt this Perfect song idea from u and other diligent ppl, whose eyes and ears are more experienced in Talat's voice, than mine. smile1.gif

Well I would certainly support this move. As a matter of fact I do believe that HF should not only be about uploading or downloading songs. The kind of debate which revovled around this topic in July this year, really stimulates interest in the melodies of yesteryears. Moving this thread under Talat Mahmood may revive interest in this topic again.

There are many such topics which can generate a fair amount of interest. For example if we start recalling the number of songs in the latter period (and by this I mean, not later than 1960s) whose tunes are similar to earlier popular songs; it can be a topic which can generate a fair amount of interest. This phenomenon started way back in 1936 when in the movie Deccan Queen, Surendra was made to sing the song, "Birha Ki Aag Lagi Morey Mun Mein" whose tune was a carbon copy of Saigal's "Balam Aaye Baso Morey Mun Mein". May be we could start a separate thread for such songs, though I am not sure where it should be fitted.

Good work Imran. A great effort putin to gather all this scattered information.

Personally I like Jalte Hein Jiske Liye from Sujatha, both interms of song and the picturization. A very simple and innovative way of portrating deepest feelings within one's heart for his sweethrt.

A few of my favourites are:

Aye Mere Dil Kahi Aur Chal - Daag (Just hear the accordian in this song, simply superb)
Koi Nahi Mera Is Duniya Mein - Daag
Hai Sabse Madhur Woh Geet - Patita
Jab Jab Phool Khile - Shikast
Aansoo Samajh Ke Kyun Mujhe - Chhaya
Raat Ne Kya Kya Khwaab Dikhaye - Ek Gaon Ki Kahani
Sab Kuchh Lutake Hosh Mein Aaye - Ek Saal
Sham-e-Gham Ki Kasam - Footpath
Phir Mujhe Deed-e-tar Yaad Aaya - Mirza Ghalib

And the list goes on.....
