Shreya Ghoshal

Atlanta music lovers were treated to a stellar concert on 3rd October at Earthlink Live. Hosted by Pratham USA it starred the young singer that has taken the music industry by storm. She is the two-time Filmfare award and National award winner, 20 year old Shreya Ghoshal. She was ably accompanied by master pianist Brian Silas who has mesmerized audiences for years with his magical touch on the piano and accepted only two shows in the tour. Atlanta was fortunate enough to be the second venue. They were joined by Parthiv Gohil, a singer who has all the attributes of becoming the legend of tomorrow with his tremendous range and velvety voice.

The trio was ably supported by a young singer Ayub Patel and emcee Shakeel Ansari who reminded one a lot of the comedic star the late I.S Johar in terms of wit, mannerisms and facial resemblance. Ansari has traveled all over the world emceeing events and regaling audiences with on the spot hamming, funny quips and limericks. He set the ball rolling by inviting young singer Ayub Patel who chose to sing Rafi’s ever green number Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh kar from the hit film Sangam and received a round of warm applause. After that Ansari welcomed Shreya Ghoshalp who started learning music initially from her mother and was later discovered by Kalyanji Anand ji. The duo was so impressed they asked her father to move to Bombay to fulfill his daughter’s potential as a singer of great promise. The rest as they say is history. Shreya started the evening with Silsila Yeh Chahat Ka, her hit from the magnum opus Devdas, and then greeted the audience very warmly adding that from their enthusiastic applause she knew the night would be full of fun and excitement. Shreya also talked about Pratham a community based grass root organization that is trying to eradicate illiteracy in India by educating children of slum dwellers. From helping 2,000 children in 1994 in Mumbai, Pratham now helps over 220,000 children across India.

Shreya said every one can participate and contribute in different ways and she is doing her bit through music and entertainment. She then went on to sing some lilting numbers from new films like Munna Bhai MBBS and Garv, and then switched to golden oldies like Bahon Mein Chale Aao from the film Anamika before singing Bairi Piya from Devdas that netted her the national award. She said this was the first song she recorded and based on her rendition she got to sing some of the other songs in the film.

Parthiv Gohil

Shakil Ansari then introduced the amazing singer Parthiv Gohil. Gohil comes from a small town in Gujarat called Bhavnagar which has now churned out so many artists and musicians that it is being referred to as Kala Nagri. Gohil hit the limelight when he won the mega finals of Saregama, singing very difficult classical numbers originally sung by Ghulam Ali Khan and Amir Khan the classical music legends of yesteryears, and so effortlessly that he floored Pandit Jasraj who was one of the judges. Parthiv hasn’t looked back since then. The first Pratham concert had featured Parthiv and was a huge success, and while he wasn’t the featured artist, the long Bandish he performed to western orchestration in rag Ahir Bhairav, stunned the crowd. His voice soared to amazing heights and every note was crystal clear - a very difficult thing to do through such a prolonged period of time. It got him a spontaneous standing ovation lasting several minutes.

Brian Silas

After that it was the turn of legendary Pianist Brian Silas who had enchanted people all over the world with the beauty of his music. Silas is self taught and came on stage quietly and his fingers recreated the magic of vintage songs like Thandi Hawa Yeh Chandni Suhani, Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh, Piya tose Naina Lage re, Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho, Zindagi Bhar nahin bhoolegi.

Shreya Ghoshal then joined him on stage. She confessed that she had been a great fan of Brian Silas for many years and was very honored to share the stage with him. Shreya sang the evergreen Lata numbers Tum na Jane Kis Jahan Mein Kho Gaye, Yun Hasraton ke Dagh, followed by the lilting Geeta Dutt songs, Ai dil Mujhe Bata de, Taqdir se Bigadi Hui, Ankhon Hi Ankhon mein Ishara, and then the vintage Asha Bhonsle numbers Mang Ke Saath Tumhara, Piya Piya Piya mora jiya pukare, Zara Haule Haule Chalo More Sajna.

Shreya has a well trained musical voice and sung all the numbers with great ease. She also has a very pleasing stage presence that doesn’t seem tarnished by the fake tinsel town world of Bollywood yet. Brian Silas was very appreciative of the audience and also of Shreya, saying he felt as if he was performing with a nightingale.

At this point Pratham USA’s President Yogi Patel who is based in Houston, came forward and highlighted his own journey. He was born to an illiterate father who understood the significance of education and encouraged his children to study, came to USA with the help of well wishers with very little money and became a successful engineer and entrepreneur. Patel said his own life story gave him the inspiration to get involved with Pratham and he asked people to donate generously to help eradicate illiteracy in the slums of India. His touching speech and comments from local Chapter representative Mangal Swaminathan and encouragement from local hotel magnate Harish Pattni who not only hosted the singers but also signed a check for 5000 dollars, helped raised a decent amount from a not very large audience. Patel said its their dream to eradicate illiteracy from India by 2010.

After a brief interval Ayub Patel came and sang the title song from the hit film Kal Ho Na Ho, and the very underutilized Parthiv Gohil came on stage and sang a wonderful medley of songs from Babul Mora to Laga Chunari Mein Daag, Chupa Lo Yun Dil Mein Pyaar Mera, Pritam Aan Milo, Seene Mein Sulgate Hain Armaan, to Chandan ka Badan, Lakhon Hain Nigahon Mein, Yeh Chand Sa Roshan Chehra.

Shreya Ghoshal then came back on stage and sang some numbers including duets from Main Hoon Na as well as her hit number Jadoo hai nasha hai from Jism. As the grand finale, Shreya sang the rather tough song Dola re which she originally sang with Kavita Krishnamurthy as a duet. The song had netted her the filmfare award for best female singer jointly with Kavita. The program was well appreciated though one wishes one had heard more of Parthiv Gohil and that there had been more people that night to support Pratham’s efforts.

kuch bhi nahin hai tera mol, boli na badi bol, khilona tu maati ka...
