TDS: Tell us about your background in music.

Shan: I was born in a culturally weathered family. I started my career in Mumbai with my father Manas Mukherjee, a popular music composer. Before starting my career, I worked in jingles with my sister Sagorika Mukharjee. Then, we finally got an album which was a remix named Rup Inka Mastana, a remixed version of R D Burman's hits of 1996. In the same year we got our maiden duet album called Nawjawan and the following year I had my first solo album called Loveology.

I saw at that time that young people buy albums and share it with 12/15 people. It happened with the album Loveology: the sale of the album was not in tally with the huge popularity the album had achieved. Then I thought that if the lyrics could express or touch more serious issues of life, the audience might enjoy it more. Then came my Tanha Dil in 2000, containing serious lyrics from the glimpses of life. Before that, I had an opportunity to playback in the film Pyar Me Kabhi Kabhi in 1999, and Mushu Mushu Hasi became popular.

TDS: What about your latest album Aksar?

Shaan: It is my 3rd solo album; the lyrics and music are mine.

TDS: Is that your first composition?

Shaan: No, I wrote all the lyrics of Tanha Dil and also tuned four songs for that album. In this album I've directed music for the first time.

TDS: Give us the background of Tanha Dil.

Shaan: At the time of Tanha Dil, I was 24-25 years old. I found that all my friends are scattered here and there, busy with their profession. At the end of the day all are alone and grieve for the golden past.

TDS: As a music composer do you have plans to direct music for cinema?

Shaan: Not within the next 2 years.

TDS: Considering your good looks, do you want to act in films like some of your co-artists?

Shaan: Offers do come often and I am yet to decide.

TDS: How did the TV show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa help your career?

Shaan: Of course it helped me a lot: I started in 2003 as an anchor and 200 episodes have already been aired.

TDS: Wasn't that a challenge especially after that huge popularity of Sonu Nigam?

Shaan: It was really tough to win Sonu Nigam's place. The 6 years of Sonu had reached such heights of popularity that Sa Re Ga Ma and Sonu Nigam almost stood for each other. There was, however, a gap of eight months that helped me; otherwise it would have been tough for me if I were to enter immediately after Sonu Nigam had left.

TDS: Who are your idols in music ?

Shaan: Kishore Kumar, RD Burman, and of course my father. I also like George Michael, Sting and many others from the western world.

TDS: How are you feeling in Bangladesh?

Shaan: This is my third visit here, I'm feeling great; in fact, I always feel so. I haven't travelled much though. I have plans to visit Chittagong this time. The audience is too cool here. I also have some friends in Bangladesh.

TDS: Will you do music in Bangladesh if you are offered?

Shaan: I don't want to make any album in a hurry. I want quality stuff. I need time for preparation too. Now I'm doing Bangla songs composed by my father with Sagorika.

TDS: Are these remix?

Shaan: No, these are all original tracks that haven't been sung before.

TDS: What differences do you find between Kolkata, Dhaka and Mumbai?

Shaan: Every city has its own characteristics. You know, Mumbai is a fast city, a city which doesn't sleep. And Kolkata has a good space, relaxed and literary mood everywhere. Dhaka is a hospitable city.

Not Rafi, isn’t is strange Shaan is mostly singing Rafisaab’s songs in Sare ga ma, and also in the show he used to present before Saragama.

Well he can answer that question better dont you think so Iqbal.

May be he idolises one and sings the songs of the other singers. No harm in that..

I idolize KK too but that does not stop me singing Rafi sahab songs, Mahendra Kapoor, Mannadey, Mukesh, Asha or Lata Mangeshkar songs ! Ofcourse I aint hosting any programme that is a diff matter smile.gif
