Next from my list is

Hayo Rabba Kaisi Ye Yaara Di Yaari

Song is not a popular one, neither it is much liked by old music fans.
Number of reasons for it, singer's voice, preferences and choices of particular voices,
MD etc etc.

Somehow, I started liking it. Kab aur kaise nahin pata. Few incidents of one's life play
role in such preferences.

Singer: Kanchan
Film: Hadsa
MD: Kalyanji Anandji

Specs: 128/44.1 4.58 Min

3. Too rootha(sad)

Singer: Kishore Kumar
Film: Yarana
MD: Rajesh Roshan

Specs: 128/44.1 3.07 Min

A song much liked by most of Kishore Fans. rolleyes.gif
Picturisation is beautiful. Few of moments of celluloid where
Amitabh made all dry eyes watery.

Such incidents are indeed one big reason for liking some relatively lesser known songs

You are right Sonu. It was an incident of 80s.

Next:

From Rajesh Roshan Stable. Mehmood emoted exceptionally well on the screen.

Aa ji ri nindiya too aa

Singer: Kishore and Lata
Film: Kunwara Baap
MD: Rajesh Roshan

Specs: 128/44.1 6.44 Min

Next

Aaj socha to ansoo bhar aaye

Film: Hanste Zakhm
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
MD: Madan Mohan

Specs: 160 Kbps/44.1 6.13 Min

[attachmentid=275596]
[attachmentid=195515]

As per info available, singer started crying during the recording.
Any sensitive person would faint after listening to it three times in a row.
A deep melancoly melody by Madan Mohan.

Next song in the series is

Film: Jaan Hazir Hai
Singer: Dilraj Kaur
MD: Jai K Parte/Porte

Song courtsey-yob

Specs: 128 Kbps/ 3.21 Min

Adding to the list a great rendition By Manna Dey.

Sur na saje kya gaoon main
Film: Basant Bahar.
MD: Shankar Jaikishan
Specs: 128 Kbps/4.00 Min

Probably MD selected him for he was the best choice available to
sing pure classical songs in films. Song starts with a high scale alaap
which can't be imagined in any other singer's voice, IMO. A little bit element
of strain on vocal chords of Manna is evident, which would have sounded
horrible in any other's voice. He glided through variations of the song with
ease which shows how skilled singer he was. Unlike common compositions
most of the lines of the song start at high scale and end at lower notes which
make it unique.

Listen to the lines of antara -"Sangeet man ko pankh lagaye" and check for the
variations in it.

Khayym has enriched treausre of HFM with some soulful
and stirring compositions like Ae dil e nadaan-Razia Sultan,
Sham-e-gham ki kasam-Talat Mehmood, Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein
khayal aata hai-Mukesh, Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon.

A 5 star rated sad song from Khayyam is here:

Jo hum pe gujarti hai

Singer: Suman Kalyanpur
Film: Shagoon/ShagunMohabbat isko kehte hain
Specs: 160Kbps/4.17 Min

Another sad song from Shagoon. Most of the fans prefer
this one over the previous one. Video of the song under is
definitely better.

Bujha diye hain khud apne hathon

Singer: Suman kalyanpur
MD: Khayyam

Interesting topic BCji. Will contribute too soon.

Posted by: parag_sankla Apr 6 2009, 11:17 PM

Just now happened to see this thread and some interesting conversations on the first page.

IMHO, no talk on sad songs can be complete without songs of Talat Mahmood sahab. In fact the song mentioned in the very first post ("Hain sab se madhur woh geet jinhen hum dard ke sur mein gaate hain") is sung by Talat sahab.

Be it Anilda (Talat's favorite composer), or Burmanda (who rarely used him) or SJ sahab (again lesser songs) or an occassional OPN, Talat sahab invariably gave new life to melodious sad songs.

What's that BTM confused.gif . Never saw anyone doing yum yum slurp slurp

Thanks for adding a few by Asha Bhosle. I remember another Asha solo

Nice choice.

Here is one by KK, arguably one of the best hit songs.
Lyrics aren't sad as much as the composition. Case of a
philosophical song changing flavor. Feel, how pieces of flute and
pathos laden voice can make a mellowy tune sad.
Enjoy 4.34 minutes of pure gold. smile.gif

Interesting thread. I assume this perheps a thread of sad songs by
singers other than Mukesh. He was the king of tragedy songs although
he sang his share of romantic and comedy songs.

Just an observation no offence to other singers.

This one has always pulled a string on my heart whenever I have heard it.. a desh bhakti geet.. but nevertheless a real sad song..

Aye mere vatan ke logo zara.. by Lata.

I agree with Parag. Admittedly the "tremor" in Talat's voice became a liability later in his career, but it was remarkably effective for sad songs. Consider the following examples:

1950 Arzoo - Aye Dil Mujhe Aisi Jagah Lai Chal Jahan Koi Na Ho - Anil Biswas
1950 Babul - Mera Jeevan Saathi Bichhad Gaya Lo Khatm Kahani Ho Gayi - Naushad Ali
1951 Madhosh - Meri Yaad Mein Tum Na Aansoo Bahana - Madan Mohan
1951 Tarana - Ek Main Hoon Ek Meri Beqasi - Anil Biswas
1952 Daag - Aye Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal - Shanker Jaikishen
1953 Foot Path - Sham e Gham Ki Kasam Aaj Ghumgeen Hain Hum - Khaiyyam
1954 Gawaiya - Teri Yaad Ka Deepak Jalta Hai - Ram Ganguly
1954 Taxidriver - Jayen To Jayen Kahan - Sachin Dev Burman
1963 Kinare Kinare - Dekh Li Teri Khudai - Jaidev

Thanks Faraaj for noticing my little post.

My most personal favorite sad song of Talat sahab, composed by Anilda for the film Do Raha :

Muhabbat tark ki maine garenba see liya maine
zamane ab toh khush ho yeh zahar bhi pee liya maine..

Human emotions are wonderful & strange. Wonderful because without emotions we can not think of any world & strange because these are individually 'unique', 'mera gham sabse badaa' OR
'mein sabse khushnaseeb huun' etc etc . Also, criteria of emotions always keeps on changing, 'what I like today may like it tomorrow but with different percentage'....

...likewise, my list of happy/sad-songs keeps on changing unsure.gif

BC Ji, after taking a deep-breath, swinging here & there, I also cought few fishes...

Today's dish...

Talat

Phir…
…Wohi Sham,
…Wohi Gham,
…Wohi Tanhaayee Hai
Dil Ko Samjhaane…
…Teri Yaaaad Chali Aayee Hai.

Teri Aankh Ke Aansoo Pee Jaauun
Aisi Meri Taqdeer Kahaaan
Tere Gham Mein Tujhko Behelaauun
Aisi Meri Taqdeer Kahaan

Shehar Ki Raat Aur Mein, Nashaad-O-Nakaara Phiruun
Jagmagaati Jaagti Sadkon Pe Awaaa Phiruun

Aye Gham-E-Dil Kya Karuun, Aye,Vehest-E-Dil Kya Karuun ,
Kya Karuun ! Kya Karuun !! Aye Gham-E-Dil Kyaaa Karuun.

Hemant

Jaane Who Kaise Log Theiy Jinko Pyar-Ko-Pyar Mila
Humne To Jab Kaliyaan Mangi Kanton Ka Haar Mila

Ya Dil Ki Suno Duniya Walo, Ya Mujhko Abhi Chup Rehene Do
Main Gham Ko Khushi Kaise Keh Duun Jo Kehete Hain Unko Kehene Do

I give 100% to followings (so far, percentage never changed)

Yesudas
[No one can only Yesudas can sing like this, I rate it with top most Rafian Sad song ' O duniya Ke Rakhwale' ]
Ka Karuun Sajni Aaye Na Baalam
Khoj Rahi Hain Piya Pardeshi Akhiyaan,
Aaye Na Balammmmm

Lata

Chand Phir Nikla, Magar Tum Na Aaye,
Jalaa Phir Mera Dil, Karuun Kya Mein Haaye.

Love this song, even though this is not early Lata, I remember Sani once discussing Lata with me had said, her voice offers different things in different decades... This is a post from another thread, but I just wanted to share this song here... Preet ko dekhen nagri wale/peed na dekhen log re, don't know why but I just loved the movie, a confused hotch-potch of a philosophical ghost story that it was. Gulzar manages to create an ambiance with his poetic sensibility, and Dimple is one of the saddest ghosts that you might have ever come across, trapped in time...and... Vinod Khanna falls in love with her.

Lekin(1991)

Kesariya baalma, o ri
Bawri bole log
Na main jiuti na mariyo main
Birha mharo rog re
Bawri bole log, log re...

Chadte din ki aanch batorun
Til til, til til sab jal jaun
Dhalte sanjh ki rakh kuredun
Ret mein sab ral jaye, sab ral jay
Na mil payi na bichadi main
Kaiso ye sanjog re
Bawri bole log re...

Maaru thal ki laambi chhaiyyan
Nis din, nis din kuch likh jaun
Mero sandeso koi suna jo
Jis ko wo, jis ko wo, dikh jaye
Preet ko dekhen nagri wale
Peed na dekhen log re
Bawri bole log re...

The song (based on 'rag' maand) plays with the opening credits of the film and sets its tone. A soul trapped between life and death, unable to escape.... "Na main jevti na mariyo main/birha mharo rog re/bawri bole log." And the last stanza captures the poetry of the entire movie...in the long shadows of the desert, I write something everyday... if someone could hear my message they would see it... "Preet ko dekhen nagri wale/peed na dekhen log re," they do not see the pain behind the romance... the entire movie is about this, a soul trapped in pain, and the man who relives that experience entrapped by it in his turn...

Sensational performance by Dimple Kapadia.
Film is different from the routine bollywood masala.
Backed by good story line and timeless music, film won
many accolades and awards. Rare occasion for an
MD, lyricist and singer winning national awards for a film.

Gulzar left his stamp in second antara of the song.

Chadhte din ki anch bataroon...

Devdas: 1955 (SDB/Talat/Sahir)

Mitwa laagi re ye kaisi anbujh aag
Mitwa, mitwa mitwa nahin aaye
Laagi re ye kaisi

Vyakul jiyara vyakul naina
Ik ik chup mein sau sau bainaa
Reh gaye aansu lut gaye raag
Mitwa mitwa mitwa mitwa

The ultimate mood song...undiluted sadness. Spare music, spare words, there is a quietness about the song, a heavy despair, that deliberatedly contrasts with the phrases... "vyakul jiyara vyakul naina" ..."lagi ye kaise unbujh aag." It is probably in the way Talat sang the song and the way Dilip emoted it on the screen. The sense of loss is so dominant in the song..."Reh gaye aansu lut gaye raag...Mitwa mitwa mitwa mitwa"

Even though Dilip Kumar thought Rafi's voice suited him the best, I have always felt that the Talat-Dilip combination fitted his Tragedy King image more.

Chalo jahan kismat le jaye

Duniya parayi log paraye

I would like to thank Bhupen Hazarika for creating a soulful melody
in "Duniya parayi log yahan begane" for Darmiyan. It always reminds me of
the beautiful sad song written by Shailendra for film Ek gaon ki kahani.

Songs like these are lost in the whirlwinds of artistic
poetry by few in Bollywood. OP Nayyar straightaway rejected all
gimmicks of a literary great discussed most on the net,
by declaring it as jugaadbazi. Film lyrics are mostly jugaadbazi of
words. One has to take care of Meters & Kilometers. Pure poetry and
Film Lyrics are like "Sauteli Behne" for puritans. Common listener in
jhamelon mein nahin padta ki "Chaudvin ka chand ki matra kya thi"

Underrated sounds irrelevant since the song I am going to chipkao
under, is written by a lyricist not rated by music fans so far.

Underrated sounds irrelevant since the song I am going to chipkao
under, is written by a lyricist not rated by music fans so far.

Waqt karta jo wafa.

Is gaane se juda hua ek kissa hai. Mera ek mitra tha.
Kisi samay wo bahut jyada depression ke daur se guzra.
Mujhe wo samay achchhi tarah se yaad hai. Mamla koi
mubbat isq wala nahin tha. Paristhithiyon ne use aisa jakda
ki wo nirasha ke bhanwar mein doobta chala gaya. Us samay
jo gaane wo suna karta tha usme se ye ek hai. Wo to khair
doston ka saath chhod gaya kuchh saal baad, uski yaadein reh gayi.

Maine pehle kabhi is gaane ki lyrics pe itna dhyan nahin diya tha.
Us wakiye ke baad is gaane ke bol aise yaad ho gaye
jaise 17 ka pahada ho.

Vasant Desai created some outstanding melodies.
Apart from the sad song from Do phool he created
few more sad songs which became very popular. These are:

1) Mere ae dil bata-Jhanak jhanak payal baje(1955),
2) Dil ka khilona haye toot gaya-Goonj uthi shehnai(1959)

Saigal's songs ... yes, one has to cultivate a taste for Saigal's singing...at least I had to and the results are tremendously rewarding. Here's another one I find beautiful from Shahjehan, incredible, the way he pauses on "maloom" and "hamen" ...

Chah barbaad karegi hamen maloom na tha
Rote rote hi kategi hamen maloom na tha

Maut bhi hampe hasegi hamen maloom na tha
Zindagi rog banegi hamen maloom na tha
Chah barbaad karegi hamen maloom na tha

Chayi ghanghor ghata, chand sitare na rahe
Ek (?) na rahen ab wo sahare na rahe
Gair to gair hi the wo bhi hamare na rahe
Hampe aisi bhi padegi hamen maloom na tha...

Beautiful lyrics... "hampe aisi bhi padegi hamen maloom na tha... "

I must be dense as I did not get the idea of discussion. I think the words of this song are quite sad. In my circles it was considered to be quite a sad song. The last stanza finishes with Mukesh only yodeling in a very sad tune.

Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere : 1960

Mujhko is raat ki tanhai mein awaaz na do
Jiski aawaaz rula de mujhe wo saaz na do...

Roshni ho na saki dil bhi jalaya maine
Tumko bhula hi nahin laakh bhulaya maine
Main pareshan hoon mujhe aur pareshan na karo...
Awaaz na do...

Kalyanji Anandji gave Mukesh some beautiful songs under their baton. In 1960, while still struggling to establish their identity, they delivered two hits, the SJ inspired Chhalia album, that had Mukesh as the lead singer. Balancing the mischievous "Dum Dum Diga Diga" was the sadly sonorous "Mere toote hue dil se koi to aaj ye pooche..." The other popular album released in the same year was Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, that had a very young Dharmendra singing this track...the tandem song that is sung quite beautifully by Lata, simply does not create the same magic for me... The lyrics of the song are by Shamim Jaipuri who composed the lyrics for only a handful of albums in hindi cinema. There is a directness about the lyrics that is very appealing... "Jiski awaaz rula de mujhe wo saaz na do" and "Main pareshan hoon mujhe aur pareshan na karo."

here are three songs from my list of favourite sad songs in HF -

One hears this beautiful song played in the background as the title rolls
and Raju guide emerges from the jail. This song beautifully brings out the
dilemma of the protagonist who is not sure of what life holds
for him outside the four walls of the prison.

Song : Wahan kaun hai tera
Movie : Guide
Year : 1965
Music & Singer : SD Burman
Lyric : Shailendra
specs : 128 / 4.31 mb / 4.42 mins

The next one is a rarely heard gem of Rafisaab

Song : Phir teri yaad naye geet
Movie : Beqasoor
Year : 1963
Music : S Mohinder
Lyric : Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
specs : 128 / 4.45 mb / 3.13 mins

This song is a less popular but an equally good one
among the many Mukesh-Shankar Jaikishan-Raj Kapoor gems

Song : Woh zindagi
Movie : Sapno ka saudagar
Year : 1968
Music : Shankar Jaikishan
Lyric : Shailendra
specs : 128 / 6.42 mb / 6.14 mins

An all time classic from Rafisaab. The song tests his vocal chords as there is minimal music and his voice has to generate all the pathos & melody together. Ultimately, his singing triumphs.

Song : Na kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon
