Hello all
I am new member in this forum..I want to get some information about Geeta Dutt whom I like most after Lataji among female singers..I think her voice is very melodious..though I heared only very few songs of her.Let me know more about this queen of magic voice.
Hello Ashraf,
Welcome,as u say Geetha is indeed a great singer and she had an unusual husky voice, and it suited Meena kumari and especially Geetha bali.
There are so many songs of hers that are very very good, either solo or in duet with all the singers of her day.
some of my own favourite geeta dutt songs;
1,Mera sundar sapna beeth gaya-do bhai i think
2,hoon abhi mein jawaan ai dil-aar paar
3,do chamakthi aanko mein kal kwaab sunehra tha itna-detective
4,Mujhko tum jab mile-with hemant-detective

Ushaji
Thanks a lot for the information....I think Geeta Dutt is very under rated singer..because I never heared abt her in media...I came to knew abt when i heared a song and wondered who this beautifull singer is..and got he information searching in net...But no body seems to be interested abt her...I heared only few songs in ur list and 'hum abhi mein jawan a dil' is my fav among them...hope other members wll respond to this topic.
Amongst all female vocalist, my favourite is Geeta Dutt. I rank her before Asha Bhonsle, who follows her. My personal favourites are her duets with Mohd Rafi. And deep down I feel, its only Geeta that can keep up with Rafi in all the songs that they have sung together.
Geetha dutt was Guru dutt's wife and sang in all his movies, under the direction of S.D.Burman and O.P nayyar. She was one of the top singers of her days. Those days all the singers had their own distinctive voices,Latha,Asha, and Geetha were the 3 great female singers of the 50's and 60's and even 70's i feel.I think Geeth paased away in the mid-70's.She was an alchoholic, but that never came in the way of her singing,She has sung some lovely songs for the film Anubhav, probably some of her last songs, and she sounds so gooooood.
some more of her numbers;
tere kasam tujpe sanam pyar to aaya-film??
nanhi kali sone chali hawa dheere aana-sujatha
tum jiyo hazaro saal saal ke din ho-sujatha-with asha
de bhi chke hum dil nazraana dil ka-jaal-with kishore
aaj ki raath piya dil na thodo-baazi
armaan bare dil ki lagan tere liye hai-with talath-film??
aankhonhi aanko mein ishara ho gaya-with rafi-CID
the list is endless
Hi Friends,
Is Geetha so boring that no one seems to be interested in her discussion???????

How about "Yeh Lo Main Haari Piya..."
Cheers,
Geeta Dutt has wonderful numbers in Mr. Sampat. And I love all of them.

The first thing that strikes one when you hear Geeta Dutt sing was that she never sang. She just glided through a tune. Of all her contemporaries her musical training was perhaps the sketchiest but what she lacked in training and technique, she more than made up with her ability to breathe life and emotion into any song she was singing. To quote Raju Bharathan, Music Critic...
" Geeta Dutt was thandi hawa and kaali ghata rolled into one. The moment she came, you got the refreshing feeling of aa hi gayi jhoom ke. There was a rare swing in her voice. She hit you like a thunderclap..........This made Geeta Dutt the one singer that Lata Mangeshkar really feared. In training and technique Lata was way ahead but neither training nor technique was of much use when pitted against Geeta in the recording room........This put Lata on the defensive and I think she avoided singing with Geeta as far as possible. I vaguely remember Lata acknowledging this fact when Geeta died on July 20, 1972."
Geeta Roy was born in Faridpur District in East Bengal in 1930. In 1942 when she was just twelve her parents shifted to Mumbai. Over there in their modest flat at Dadar music director Hanuman Prasad heard her singing casually. He gave her two lines to sing in the film Bhakt Prahlad (1946). But her rendering of those two lines stood out and astonished everybody in the recording studio. A minor incident became the genesis of a great musical career.
Her major assignment came the following year, 1947, with Do Bhai. The music of that film clicked in a big way particularly Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya and Geeta became a top playback singer. 1947-1949 saw Geeta Roy rule as the number one playback singer in the Mumbai film industry as she moved from strength to strength.
However three films released in 1949. Barsaat, Andaaz and Mahal. All three smashing hits. The music of each film better than the other. In all three films the heroine's songs were sung by a young lady who had also made her debut in playback singing in 1946 but till then had not made any significant headway in her career. The success of these films changed all that. The song 'Aayega aanewala' from Mahal soared to heights of till then unseen popularity. ( It remains an all time favourite even today ) The singer was ... Lata Mangeshkar. Lata went on to become the greatest playback singer the Indian screen has ever seen. Only two singers managed to survive the Lata onslaught in the 1950s. Shamshad Begam and Geeta Roy. Though relegated to the second spot, Geeta managed to hold her own against Lata for more than a decade and she and Lata were the premier two female playback singers of the 1950s.
Initially Geeta was a singer well known for bhajans and weepy, weepy sad songs. But 1951 saw the release of a film, Baazi. The jazzy musical score of the film by S.D. Burman revealed a new facet to Geeta's singing. The sex appeal in her voice and the ease with which she went western was marvelous to behold. While every song in the film was a raging hit, one stood out for special appeal - Tadbir se Bigdi hui Taqdeer. From then on in the 1950s for a club dance or a seductive song, the first choice was Geeta.
During the recording of the song she met the young and upcoming director of the film, Guru Dutt. Thus blossomed a romance, which culminated in marriage on 26 May, 1953. Geeta went on to sing some of her best songs in his films while continuing singing in various outside assignments as well.
S.D. Burman was among the earliest to discover the magic in her voice with Do Bhai. He effectively used the Bengali lilt in her voice memorably in films like Devdas (1955) and Pyaasa (1957). The song Aaj sajan mohe ang lagalo from the latter is one of the finest examples of the Bengali kirtan put over on the Hindi screen. In fact, no female singer has better articulated the spirit of Burmanda's music in its early years.
O.P. Nayyar developed the side of Geeta which had emerged with Baazi. Under his freewheeling baton Geeta developed into a really hep singer who could belt out any number - soft, sultry, happy, snappy, romantic, teasing or tragic. It was Geeta Dutt's rare gift that she could effervescently sing for both the doll and the moll. And it was O.P. who got Geeta to stop being overtly emotional in sad songs. O.P.'s comments on Geeta :
" ..........Who will deny there is a unique quality to her singing. Give her a blatantly westernized tune this momentand a complex classical composition the next, and she will do equal justice to both with an ease of expression which a singer can only be born with. She is particularly good for songs accompanying boisterous jamborees. With that tantalizing lilt and fascinating curves she puts into her singing, she is the ideal choice if it is seductive allure you want in a song........Geeta Dutt is an asset to any music director."
However by 1957 her marriage had run into rough weather and was on the rocks. Guru Dutt had got romantically involved with his new leading lady Waheeda Rehman. The breaking up of her marriage also began having repercussions on her career. To quieten things down Guru Dutt launched a film Gauri (1957) with her in the lead. She was to be launched as a singing star and it was to be India's first film in cinemascope but the film was shelved after just a few days shooting. This was the time when one heard complaints from music directors about her not being easily available for either rehearsals or recordings.
In fact in 1957, when he fell out with Lata Mangeshkar, Burmanda was looking to make Geeta his main singer rather than the upcoming Asha Bhosle. After all by then Geeta was a mature singer while Asha was still raw. But due to her troubled marriage Geeta was not free to practice in the style required by S.D. Burman who was a hard taskmaster regarding rehearsals. He joined O.P. Nayyar in shaping Asha rather than wait for Geeta. Consequently Asha not only took her place but also went beyond her. And to make things worse, Geeta began finding solace in drinks.
On October 10, 1964 Guru Dutt passed away. Geeta was a broken woman, shattered by his death. She suffered a nervous breakdown. When she recovered she found herself in a financial mess. She did try to resume singing again, cutting discs at Durga Puja and giving stage shows and even doing a Bengali film, Badhu Bharan (1967) as heroine! But her health kept failing as she drank herself to a point of no return. She died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1972. But not before she showed she still had it in her were she given a mike to sing. The songs of Basu Bhattacharya's Anubhav (1971), Meri Jaan Mujhe Jaan na Kaho Meri Jaan, Koi Chupke se Aake and Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota represent some of the finest work that Geeta Dutt ever did.
Indeed sad that she almost killed herself by over drinking. She was only 42!!!!!!
Hi Vivek,
The information on Geetha was complete and made wonderful reading.
Sad that she had such a tragic life..............
u know one finds that most of these very talented artiste's have very stressful lives and they breakdown very easily as is the case with guru dutt ,meena kumari etc;

Is this topic / thread still active ? Hope it is As when it comes to Geeta Dutt nothing should stop niether her songs nor topics about her songs...
I have some clippings and pictures of beautiful Geeta Dutt which if you all interested will post here. This clippings where saved from a very craziest fan of Geeta Dutt I must have come across ever. (thank god I saved it as the site no longer works now ) Let me know if anyone interested and I will post it here.
In the meantime a handy facts - facets on some of her songs with different MDs which is also posted on IndianMelody, unfortunately the website from where this was taken is broken , otherwise they had real good details on Geeta Dutt.
Geeta Dutt scored heavily as a singer particularly when she sang under the baton of two music directors, S.D. Burman and O.P.Nayyar.
The S.D. Factor:
S.D. Burman was among the earliest to discover the magic in Geeta Dutt's voice. In 1947 with Filmistan's DoBhai. He persuaded the producer to give her a break. The producer being unsure of Geeta made a deal with S.D. Burman. She would record a song but it would be retained only after hearing the result. The song 'Humein chod piyakis desh gaye' was recorded and played back. The rest as they say is history. Even as it lead to Geeta becoming the foremost singer of the industry by 1951 she had found herself in a position where she was regarded good only for bhajans and sad songs. It took S.D.Burman's jazzy and westernized score for Baazi which showcased Geeta's versatility, her breezy voice. S.D. Burman effectively used the Bengali lilt in her voice memorably in films like Devdas and Pyaasa. Thesong 'Aaj sajan mohe ang lagalo' from the latter is one of the finest examples of the Bengali kirtan put over on the Hindi screen. No female singer has better articulated the spirit of Burmanda's music in its early years. In fact in 1957, when he fell out with Lata, Burmanda was looking to make Geeta his main singer rather than the upcoming Asha Bhonsle. After all by then Geeta was a mature singer while Asha was still raw. But due to her troubled marriage Geeta was not free to practice in the style required by S.D.Burman who was a hard taskmaster in matter of rehearsals. He joined O.P. Nayyar in shaping Asha rather than wait for Geeta. Some memorable songs sung by Geeta under S.D. Burman's baton are:
'Mera sundar sapna beet gaya' (Do Bhai - 1947 )
'Woh sapnewaali raat' (Pyaar - 1950 )
'Tadbir se bigdi hui taqdeer' (Baazi - 1951 )
'Aan milo aan milo' (Devdas - 1955 ) with Manna Dey
'Aaj sajan mohe ang lagalo' (Pyaasa - 1957 )
'Hawa dhire aana' (Sujata - 1959 )
'Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam ' (Kaagaz ke Phool - 1959 )
Geeta sang 72 songs for Dada Burman of which 43 were solos. The last song she recorded for him was from the film Ziddi(1964), 'Main tere pyaar mein kya kya na bana dilbar.'
The O.P. Nayyar wave:
Geeta suited O.P. Nayyar's ebullient themes to a T. He developed the side of Geeta which had emerged with Baazi.
' ..........Who will deny there is a unique quality to her singing. Give her a blatantly westernized tune this momentand a complex classical composition the next, and she will do equal justice to both with an ease of expression which a singer can only be born with. She is particularly good for songs accompanying boisterous jamborees. With that tantalizing lilt and fascinating curves she puts into her singing, she is the ideal choice if it is seductive allure you want in a song........Geeta Dutt is an asset to any music director. '
Some immortal gems sung by Geeta Dutt underO.P. Nayyar's baton:
'Zara saamne aa'( Baaz - 1953 )
'Babuji dhire chalna' (Aar Paar - 1954 )
'Thandi hawa kali ghata' (Mr. & Mrs 55 - 1955 )
'Jab badal lehraya' (Chchoomantar - 1956 )
'Mere zindagi ke humsafar' (Shrimati 420 - 1956 )
'Chor, lutere, daku'( Ustad - 1957 )
'Mera naan chin chin choo' (Howrah Bridge - 1958 )
'Kaisa jadoo balam tune dara' (12 o'clock - 1958 )
This is not to say that Geeta was any less effective with other music directors. The songs she has sung for Hemant Kumar in Anandmath ( 1952 ), Bahu ( 1954 ),Ek Jhalak ( 1957 ), Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam ( 1962 ) bear testimony to this. It's just that for the sheer volume and the scaleof popularity that the songs of S.D. Burman and O.P. Nayyar reached make them special in Geeta's oeuvre.
The Best of Geeta Dutt
In early 1957 while selecting the ten best songs that she has sung, Geeta Dutt mentioned
' People have a complex that successful film songs are not necessary the best. I beg to differ. If a song catches public fancy it could only be because of all round perfection in all departments - in its music, in its writing, in its singing. Should I then list my ten best songs or my ten most popular songs? The dividing line, I feel is very thin. The songs that have stood the test of public approval and the songs that have personally appealed to me are the same. '
The ten songs she selected then represented definite landmarks in her singing career. They are:
'Mat ja mat ja jogi' (Jogan - 1950 ) This was her own personal favourite.
'Mera sundar sapna beet gaya' (Do Bhai - 1947 )
'Na yeh chand hoga' (Shart - 1954 )
'Tadbir se bigdi hui taqdeer' (Baazi - 1951 )
'Yeh lo main hari piya' (Aar Paar - 1954 )
'Khayalon mein kisike' (Baawre Nain - 1950 ) with Mukesh
'Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo' (Pyaasa - 1957 )
'Jaane kya tunhe kahi' (Pyaasa - 1957 )
'Ae dil mujhe bata de' (Bhai Bhai - 1956 )
'Hai yeh duniya kaunsi' (Sailaab - 1956 )
This as mentioned was in early 1957. Citing the reason for her selections Geeta mentioned:
' I feel that a song must express human emotions in simple language and in a tune that affords the singer sufficient scope to do full justice to the thought underlying the lyric. I feel that the songs I have listed are simple enough to be appreciated by people of all ages at all times.'
Some of Geeta's best work for e.g. 'Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam' from Kaagaz ke Phool(1959), 'Chale aao, chale aao' from Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam (1962) and the songs of Anubhav (1971) were to come later and naturally they do not find a place in that list.
Thus if I were to select a list today, it might read something like this:
'Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam' ( Kaagaz ke Phool - 1959)
'Aaj ki kaali ghata' (Uski Kahani - 1966 )
'Meri jaan mujhe jaan na kaho meri jaan'( Anubhav - 1971 )
'Na jaao saiyaan chudha ke baiyaan'( Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam - 1962 )
'Yeh lo main hari piya' (Aar Paar - 1954 )
'Tadbir se bigdi hui taqdeer' (Baazi - 1951 )
'Na yeh chand hoga' (Shart - 1954 )
'Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo' (Pyaasa - 1957 )
'Mera sundar sapna beet gaya'( Do Bhai - 1947 )
'Ghungat ke pat khol' (Jogan - 1950 )
This is of course but a personal choice. And a most difficult one to make. For many of Geeta Dutt's songs endure in appeal even today. The discerning would ask but what about 'Hawa dhire aana' from Sujata ( 1959 ) or'Thandi hawa kali ghata' from Mr. and Mrs 55 ( 1955) or for that matter even ' Mera naam chinchin choo' from Howrah Bridge ( 1958 ) or 'Jaata kahaan hai diwaane' from C.I.D. ( 1956 ) Well try making your own list! See if you can manage to include 'Tehro zara si der' from Savera ( 1958 ) or 'Ja ja ja ja bewafaa' from Aar Paar ( 1954 ) or 'Preetam aan milo' from Mr. and Mrs 55. ( 1955 ) or even 'Aayi birha ki raat' from Navdurga( 1953 ).

Ok for all Geeta ji's fan , let me get by backups , I have an excellent article which I had clipped some 8 to 10 years back during her anniversary.
Will be posting that article soon ....
Bawra J(i),
Waiting for the article. I am a "pankha" too, but gosh there's so much going on at HF, it's difficult to keep up. I love her voice, considering her life was tragic, her voice has so much verve. Most of her songs make me smile, they are so lively!!!
T
Ok folks, here is the article , named "Geeta Dutt Tribute from Hemant Parikh (Must Read 20th July, 1994)"
She was the blithe spirit of our popular music. All the more so under
the baton of O.P . Nayyar who owed his "Aar Paar" breakthrough to her.
Here is a peep into GEETA DUTT’s solo repertoire for this composer. On
the occasion of her 22nd death anniversary falling on July 20,1994 a
study by RAJU BHARATAN. Complied by Hemant Parikh.
Who recommended O.P. Nayyar as a music director
to Guru Dutt for "Baaz"? Inimitable Geeta Roy of course, when she was
all set to become Geeta Dutt Which number arguably rates as the hottest
tune composed by O.P. Nayyar- yesterday, today or tomorrow? Mera naam
Chin-Chin-Choo, the Helen foot-tapper from "Howrah Bridge".
What a grim irony that Mera naam Chin-Chin-Choo
turned out to be Geeta’s swan song for Opee. I turn the spotlight here on
Geeta Dutt’s solos for O.P Nayyar, since it is not my style to halve the
anniversary credit by bringing in the singer’s duets too. At twelve
o’clock on July 20, we were into 22 years without Geeta Dutt. Yet this
blithe spirit of our popular music has been in the public ear all these
22 years Geeta’s vocal mystique, it is unique.
Especially under the seductive baton of O.P.
Nayyar. The story of their ear-riveting association be-gins with Dalsukh
Pancholi’s "Asmaan" in 1952, flopping like nobody’s show business in the
face of Geeta Roy’s vocals in it; for O.P.Nayyar, being vibrant as
vibrant could be. Vibrant in the shape of Pom pom pom baaja bole dholak
dhin dhin dhin (the GE28021 record I had to beg, borrow or steal for
Ameen Sayani to play during Binaca for birth play during anniversary),
Arre kya hoon main na bahaar hoon, Dekho jaadoo bhare more naina and that
stunner: Dil hai diwana jawaan hai zamana. "Asmaan" bombed so explosively
that O.P. Nayyar switched wholesale to Asha Bhonsle for all the 12 songs
of his next film, P.L. Santoshi’s "Chham Chhama Chham".
Characteristically, Geeta never held this against
Opee, commending his name to Guru Dutt to score the music for the 1953
Geeta Bali - Guru Dutt starrer, "Baaz". And Guru Dutt shot the movie
almost entirely on a ship. What memorable solos Opee composed for Geeta
to articulate while working for the first time with a creative director
like Guru Dutt and a super heroine like Geeta Bali. Remembar Geeta Roy’s
Zara saamne aa zara aankh mila on Geeta Bali?
And Geeta Roy rendering the very opposite style
of tune in the very opposite style of scene that Geeta Bali, alone could
take in her acting stride; Ai dil ai diwane aag laga li kyun daaman mein.
There were, in the same "Baaz", other numbers that the listener of taste
recalls to this day as Geeta-Opee at their brightest; Maanjhi albele
chalo re haule haule, Ai watan ke nauja waan jaag aur jaga ke chal, Taare
chaandni afsaane samaan bahaar hai suhane and Jaage panchchi savera hua.
What composing by Opee, what vocalising by Geeta!
Yet "Baaz" failed. But not the vocals of Geeta or
the tunes of Opee. In fact, the solo numbers scored by O.P. Nayyar for
Geeta Roy in "Asmaan" and "Baaz" have become collectors items in the 22
years Geeta has been off but never away. As for Geeta-Opee’s "Aar
Paar", its impact is still fresh in our ears. For "Aar Paar" (1954) was
the breakthrough film for Guru Dutt and O.P.Nayyar alike.
It is well to remember that Geeta Roy, in posing
an early threat to Lata, had broken through long before Guru Dutt and
O.P. Nayyar found public acceptance. Yes, if the Mangeshkar was already
number one by 1953, she was "first only among three equals". Lata, Geeta
and Shamshad Be-gum. Asha Bhonsle came into the reckoning only after
these three and was still struggling in 1953.
But Our theme song here is Geeta going solo in
the sultry custody of Opee. And the Geeta solos for Opee in "Aar Paar"
may, each, be pinpointed as an ever green; Yeh lo main haari piya, Babuji
dhire chalna pyaar mein, Hoon abhi main jawaan and that heart stopper on
the obverse of the N50848 Sun sun sun sun zaalima record: Jaa jaa jaa jaa
bewafaa. The Sun sun sun sun zaalima duet was a straight lift, but Jaa
jaa jaa jaa bewafaa was a mood creation by Opee - epitomised by Geeta in
that antithetic idiom that so set off her vim and vitality as a
joie-de-vivre performer.
We had a fresh insight into this "other" mood of
Geeta as, in "Mr & Mrs 55", without the slightest sense of inhibition,
she took on C.H. Atma, under the same Opee, and invested Preetam aan milo
with her own vocal persona. Saroj Mohini Nayyar, as the one who wrote the
Atma original, was shaky about this Geeta edition.
But Saroj Mohini could feel shaky only until Geeta’s voice came over
after that she knew she was listening to a live enactor, not a mere
singer. May be Madhubala’s visage was half the battle won. But can you
imagine Madhubala without Geeta in such "Mr & Mrs 55" solo as Thandi hawa
kaali ghata? Geeta had this gift of putting her vocal stamp even on
Madhubala! On Madhubala as on Cuckoo - Neele aasmaane.
O P. Nayyar’s composing, at this make-or-break
stage in this career, had a swinging rhythm that was best captured by
mood specialist Geeta Dutt. Look at the way Geeta put over for Opee, in
"Musafirkhana" that charming romantic solo on Shyama; Dil dee daala
nazrana. It was a simple tune equally simply put across, that is why it
was so lucidly picked up by the simple ear and the simple mind.
What was "Choomantar" but a Johny Walker - Shyama
- Karan
Dewan extension of "Musafirkhana". Before you could say "Chhoomantar",
Geeta had established her Opee sway on your heart with Jab baddal
lehraaya jiya jhoom jhoom
ke gaaya, Gori gori raat hai taaron ki baaraat hai and Raat nashili rang
rangili mast hawa. What a shame these carefree re-minders of our youth
are numbers so little heard today.
Oh, but I have missed out on a film that is
current soft-drink coin: "Miss Coca Cola". The Pepsi people could never
have found a vocal match for Geeta, had she been living to vivify the
fizz in Coca-Cola. Geeta Bali had yet to wed Shammi Kapoor when she was
his "Miss Coca Cola" in the film of that name! And how can we forget from
"Miss Coca Cola" such Geeta-Opee ear-catchers as Sach sach bol nahin
batiyaan bana, Teri kaafir nigah kar gayi dil ko tabaah and Ban dhadkan
kajra naina dole re. We rarely get to hear these numbers, will Vividh
Bharati and Doodarshan oblige, now that the Coca-Colonisation of India by
the USA is in full swing?
"C.I.D", of course, was the Raj Khosla directed
Guru Dutt film that brought O.P. Nayyar zooming on as a live challenger
to Shanker-Jaikishan in the year (1956) in which that swiftly advancing
duo bagged their maiden Filmfare Best music award for "Chori Chori". All
the film award entries, I remember, were counted in my editorial charge
in the Times Of India building and Lata-Manna Dey, at their best in
"Chori Chori", just about managed to edge out Geeta-Rafi at their best in
"C.I.D". Shanker-Jaikishan, too, needed to be at their most innovative to
snatch that 1956 filmfare award from O.P. Nayyar, who was to beat this
duo to it the following year with "Naya Daur" - without Geeta Dutt!
With Geeta Dutt, in "C.I.D", Opee had but one
solo - but what a solo! The spell of Jaata kahaan hai diwane abides. Its
Kuchch tere dil mein fifi kuchch mere dil mein fifi punchline by Geeta
represented O.P. Nayyar’s trendy counter to S.D. Burman’s
Tip-tip-tip-tip-tip--tip-tip effect given by the same Geeta Roy on Geeta
Bali in the Dekh ke akeli mohe beguiler of "Baazi". There was a raging in
controversy in the letters’ section of Screen about why Geeta’s Jaata
kahaan hai diwane was deleted from "C.I.D." Which is the Geeta number you
would choose from between Opee’s Jaata kahaan hai diwane and S.D.'s Dekh
ke akeli mohe? The choice lies between Geeta Roy and Geeta Dutt!
When he bagged "Mr. Lambu", for O.P. Nayyar it
was a dream come true, for the film gave him his first opportunity to
compose for Suraiya. At the time, I remember expressing my disappointment
to Opee for the way he had scored Suraiya’s two solos in "Mr..Lambu" as
Yaad karun tori batiyaan and Soyi hai kahaan jaakar taqdeer mohabbat ki.
But today these Suraiya numbers sound pleasant enough. As pleasant as
Geeta’s lone solo in "Mr. Lambu", Aaj jo hum tum mil gaye pyaar mein?
Well, for Geeta, Suraiya was no competition. Even Lata was not, for the
word "competition" did not exist in Geeta’s vocal lexicon.
That is why Geeta could pack her all even into a
below-grade crimusical like "Shrimati 420". There were no fewer than
three Geeta-Opee solos in "Shrimati 420" and each was part of a Nayyar
wave that then swept our cinema:
Meri zindagi ke humsafar phenkna yahaan bhi ek nazar, Hum ko chhod ke
kahaan jaaoge saiyyan and Badi rangili zindagi hai ha seen hai dillagi
hai. What a great idea it would be if HMV issued a Cassette made up
exclusively of Geeta’s OP solos in the 1952-60 phase. For come 1961 and
Geeta sadly, is out of O.P. Nayyar’s recording room.
Which then is the timeless number with which
Geeta Dutt came closest to matching her own Mera naam Chin-Chin-Choo? We
are talking of O.P. Nayyar. so I say it is Chor lootere daaku in "Ustad".
I know Asha successfully grappled with every sironise twist and turn in
an Opee tune in later years, but Chor lootere daaku came at a time when
Geeta alone could do that for O.P. Nayyar. And whether the number be Chor
lootere daaku or Mera naam Chin-Chin-Choo, Geeta had the God given gift
of sounding sensuous without sounding salacious. Geeta alone had this
knack of never making even an Opee tune sound voluptuous. I concede Asha
took over from Geeta in style, yet the fact remains that there is not one
Opee tune you can recall that Geeta coarsened .
"It is sad therefore that a sizzler like Chor
lootere daaku represents the phase (1957) in which O.P. Nayyar began the
business of banishing Geeta by having ears only for Asha. The solos and
duets alike of Geeta, I find, are severely rationed by Opee, starting
with "Ustad". In Opee chartbusters like "Tumsa Nahin Dekha" and "Naya
Daur", even in Nayyar quickies of this period like "Hum Sub Chor Hain"
and "Qaidi", it is Asha almost all the way, barring that almost mandatory
interpolation by Shamshad Begum.
With "Phagun", the Madhubala-Bharat Bhooshan
all-Pilu musical coming at the fag-end of 1957, Opee’s obsession with
Asha is complete - all 11 songs in the film carry her vocals. This I
emphasise not as a criticism of Asha, who came up the hard way, but
merely as OP not being any longer pre-pared to entertain the idea of
resummoning his one time chief artiste, Geeta Dutt. This was when Geeta
made that famous phone call to Opee to ask: "What have I done to you that
you now don’t send for me at all?" How does Opee feel about such Asha
concentration and Geeta inattention today? "Very guilty" says Opee. "But
love knows no reason, only a season!"
Even in such a season, in "Duniya Rang Rangeeli"
in which there were six songs by Asha tuned by Opee, Geeta Dutt left a
vocal mark, all her own in the sole solo she got in the film: Kya yeh tu
ne kiya ishara. From such an occasional Geeta crumb, I conclude that
Opee at times suffered from pricks of conscience. It was the call of such
a conscience that presumably made Opee offer Geeta such solo sops in 1958
as Bach bach bach kahun sach sach sach in "Farishta" and Channda chaandni
mein jab chamke kya ho aa mile jo koyi chham se in "Mujrim".
Yet there was one film in 1958 in which O.P.
Nayyar had to settle for Geeta Dutt as his main singer afresh. This,
traumatically for Geeta, was the Waheeda Rehnnan Guru Dutt starrer:
"Twelve O’Clock". We had here, hoon the still super-supple throat of
Geeta three such Opee lilters as Kaisa jaadu balam tum ne daara, Aji o
suno to nahin tum ne humen pehchana and Arre tauba taurba yeh teri ada.
Thus was the "Clock" chimingly turned back to "Twelve" before Geeta Dutt
disappeared from O.P. Nayyar’s recording room.
Asha Bhonsle went on to sing for O.P. Nayyar as
many as 81 solo plus chorus-backed numbers, but the digits get reversed
in the solo case of Geeta to 18. Yet what a watershed these 18 Geeta
solos mark in Opee’s career: O. P.Nayyar might have created some sort of
a recording by getting Asha to figure in all songs of "Phagun", all 14
songs of "Basant", all 9 songs of "Hongkong", all 7 songs of "Mitti
Mein Sona", all 6 songs in the case of each of three films: "C.I.D.
909", "The Killers" and "Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye".
The Chain se hum ko kabhi aap ane jeene na diya
collaboration of Asha-Opee may have a pang and a tang all its own. Yet
Asha Bhonsle, as a human being first and a imputative being after, will
be the first, I know, to spare a Thandi thandi hawa poochche unka pata
thought for a Geeta who hid her light under a bushel so that her
husband’s might shine the brighter . A husband who, when he went back to
O.P. Nayyar for "Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi", knew it had to be Asha it
could not be his wife even for a tune right up Geeta’s, alley like Koyi
keh de keh de kehde zamane se jaa ke ki hum ghabra ke mohabbat kar
baithe....
An Asha shraddhanjali to Geeta, is it not
overdue, now that Ms. Bhonsle has sung like a champion for 22 years
without any competition from Ms.Dutt?
From the Record GEETA DUTT IN MEMORIAM
This marvel of a musical montage will bring you
bitter-sweet memories of bygone years. Bitter, because the voice that
presents it is the voice of Geeta Dutt who is no more with us. And sweet,
because sweetness was the keynote of her music.
Geeta’s was the voice that lent a rare
sensitivity and poise, an uncanny grace and dignity, to every song she
warbled, It had also in it a subtle blend of talent and imagination of
originality and virtuosity - the kind of blend we find so beautifully
reflected in the rich legacy of recorded repertoire she has left behind
Indeed, her sudden death at 41 has left a void in the melody world that
is hard to fill, . Born in a well-known family of Zamindars from East
Bengal, now Bangla Desh, Geeta Dutt migrated to Bombay soon after
partition in 1947, Timbre and tone were in her blood and before long did
she blaze a new trail as a singer par excellence,
Maestros of the eminence of S, D, Burman and O,
P, Nayyar found her silken voice ideally suited for films and harnessed
it to best advantage, From then on, for almost two decades, Geeta had her
sway over millions of her fans, singing as many as 5,000 songs in a
variety of languages-from Bengali and Hindi to Punjabi, Marathi and even
Gujarati Songs like Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya and Tadbeer se bigdi hui,
with their perennial appeal, are the finest examples of her eloquent
musical expression Geeta Dutt s marriage in 1 953 with Guru Dutt, the
versatile producer - director - -actor, was an event to remember in the
world of film music. She lent her voice to almost all the films produced
by her husband - like "Pyaasa", "Mr. and Mrs. 55", "Baazi", "Aar Paar",
"C.I.D" , "Kagaz- ke- Phool" and "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam".
And it is sheer delight to hear these songs even
today, This disc offers you the very epitome of her emotional world in
all its varied facets of the little joys and sorrows that shaped her
musical being.

Extracts from "My son, Guru Dutt", a biography of the film-maker/director/producer/actor by his mother, can be read in the online publications of SCREEN commencing with the issue of Sep. 17.
Please click on "ARCHIVE" (in small lettering on top right-hand side of the screen) and type in the date of the issue, then look up the subject "GOLDEN JUBILEE".
The later extracts have references to Geeta Dutt's fame and the tempestuous relationship of the couple (coloured by a mother's perception).
Thank you all so much that finally people are starting to talk and discuss about the most wonderful and talented singer Geeta Dutt. I am an ardent fan of Geeta Dutt and I cannot find anyone else in the category of her. It is shameful that such a talent had to end like the way she did.
I read what Guru Dutt's mother wrote about Geeta. It does not surprise me at all. The mentality here is: Because she was a lady, she was supposed to sacrifice her career and take care of the homefront while Guru Dutt could pursue affairs as well as his talent!!!! Wa Wa!!
Moreover one should understand Bengalis always had a different culture than rest of India during that time, where the lady rules the household (in fact it is sometimes better), moreover Bengalis treat men and women on equal footings when it comes to external matters and Geeta was a true product of a cultured Bengali family.
It was unfair on Guru Dutt's mother to even utter such filth about Geeta, who could be so much more successful than her son had her son not messed the marriage up.
Also, I am desperately looking for the Bengali movie "BADHU BARAN". Rakhee Gulzar's first film. Geeta acted in it. Also is Gouri still available?

Hello All,
I am very delighted to find this thread as I am looking for "Meri Jaan" from Anubhav by Geeta Dutt. If anybody has it, could you please upload it?
Thanks,

A lesser known Geeta Dutt film is Milaap(1954) and it had wonderful songs. I have only one song from the film- 'Hum se bhii karlo kabhi kabhi to mithi mithi do baatein.' Does anyone have other numbers from the film especially the lovely 'jaate ho to jaao par jaooge kahaan babuji phir aisa dil paaoge kahaan.' If yes, then please upload.
Thanks Unni! I am totally enjoying listening to it

"I hope mom's fans will give me a chance. I know comparisons are inevitable."
A singer named Nina Memon is about to cut her first album. So what's new in this age of Indipop? Nothing, except that Nina is the daughter of legendary playback singer Geeta Dutt, who immortalised songs like Mera naam chin chin choo and Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo with her sensuous renditions and golden voice.
Nina was ten when she lost her mother Geeta Dutt. An early marriage to Mehmood's nephew Naushad and subsequent motherhood propelled Nina to put her singing ambitions on the backburner. Now, Nina is ready to make her foray into the music world with her first album Kaisa hai ye pyaar.
College friend Tutun Roy, a talented guitarist and a music programmer, has composed eight numbers, which include a hardcore rock and roll and a rap duet with Lucky Ali's younger brother Mansoor Ali. Tutun Roy describes Nina's voice as "unique, and very deep". indya.com met Nina on her recent visit to Mumbai. Excerpts from an interview.
What motivated you to think of singing as a career today?
My main inspiration is my husband. In fact, since my marriage to Naushad 13 years ago, he has been urging me to take up music professionally. Though I love music, I didn't do it as I wanted to give enough time to my kids. Today my daughter Nafisa is twelve and my son Aman is eight. Now I feel I have the time and the space to do something for myself. Music has naturally been my first choice.
Was your mother Geeta Dutt your first teacher of music?
No. My mother passed away when I was just ten. She was tied up with a lot of work. So I couldn't learn from her. She did arrange a music teacher for me at one point, but I really picked up music only in my teens.
What are your strongest memories of your mother?
There was a lot of mischief in my mother. She was fun loving. She loved to have friends around her. I do not remember ever seeing my mother alone. She was an in-doors person and liked to be at home. She'd be cooking and then ever so often she would pull out the harmonium and sing both Hindi and Bengali songs. A tabalchi named Debu would accompany her.
What are our memories of your father, Guru Dutt?
My father died when I was just two. I know him just as the world knows him, as a great filmmaker. I have no personal memories.
One can see, you have eyes like your mother's and some of her other features. Would you say your style of singing is like hers?
No. My voice is huskier than my mother's. Probably an expression here and there may remind one of her style, but I don't attempt to sound like her. I hope mom's fans will give me a chance. I know comparisons are inevitable.
What kind of music appeals to you?
I am all for melody. My top favourites among my mother's songs are Waqt ne kiya and Chale aao. I don't care much for the likes of Punjabi pop. Tutun and I have ensured that my first album has a lot of melody.
What are your future plans?
I am open to doing any kind of music, even playback singing, provided I feel I have the space to do it well. I would like to do a tribute to both my father and mother. In fact, I am working on a collection of my mother's songs. But I would like to release that later. First, I want people to hear my voice and accept me. I guess, they would then be easier on me.

The one female singer who was not intimidated by her friend and confidante, Lata-ji. And perhaps Asha-ji took some tips from Geeta Dutt's singing. For Geeta-ji could sing a catchy or sad or romantic song for the heroine, yet sound coquettish for the vamp.
Here's one that the music publishers don't usually include in their compilations:

music is by O P Nayyar and the year is 1955. Nice song, with

thanks for the song unni ji...the another one is a rafi duet for sure..

O my God!! Thanks Unni Ji sooooo much! I wonder how you have all these songs. Please upload more of these uncommon songs. I am just crazy about Geeta Dutt (from the age of 13). Also if you find any writings etc. or articles , pictures , please share it with us.
Lets really keep Geeta Dutt alive. She deserves it after all.... Whenever I read about her life I just feel how much UNFAIR life has been to her. No one seems to care about the wealth of songs she has left behind.
Also if anyone can get the Bengali movie Badhu Baran (1967, Rakhi Gulzar is also in it). i would like to see a motion pic in which Geeta Dutt appears. The only glance that I had of Geeta Dutt was in Kala Bazaar when she is walking with guru Dutt towards the auditorium.
Lets keep sharing about the most unsung personality in Indian playback domain...

'I miss my father terribly'
Syed Firdaus Ashraf | October 15, 2004 15:01 IST
When I was eight, I was at school watching a cartoon film [as a treat] on my principal's birthday. We were enjoying the film when suddenly one of my uncles came and took me away. I was very angry with him. I just didn't want to leave. I told him that I would complain about him to my father.
When we reached home there was silence in [the house]. My father was lying down. I thought, at first, that he was sleeping. I never thought he was dead. I had never seen a dead person so I guessed he was asleep.
I was too young to realise or understand the loss. But as time passed, I realised he would not come back. Forty years after his death, I realise the importance of October 10, 1964. He passed away early in the morning, around 1 am. But the news came post-sunrise after the door was broken down to find his dead body.
A lot of theories have been put forth on why he committed suicide. But I think it was an accident. He had scheduled appointments the next day with [actress] Mala Sinha for Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi and Rajsaab [Raj Kapoor] to discuss making colour films.
Guru Dutt on rediff.com!
'Guru Dutt attempted suicide thrice'
'Nobody really knows what happened on October 10'
'He didn't make films. He made poetry'
Guru Dutt: The man who couldn't digest failure
'Guru Dutt Lives On'
He was to meet them and chalk out some plans. So I don't think there was any reason for him to commit suicide. My father had sleeping disorders and popped sleeping pills like any other person. That day he was drunk and had taken an overdose of pills, which culminated in his death. It was a lethal combination of excessive liquor and sleeping pills.
Some people say the breakdown of his affair with Waheeda Rehman led him to commit suicide. I don't believe is so. Their affair was over long before. Yes, he was having problems with my mother [singer Geeta Dutt] but nor do I think that was the reason.
He was depressed that day while he was sitting with Abrar Uncle [Abrar Alvi, his dialogue writer and director of Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam] in the evening. We were supposed to meet him the next day after school. Let people say what they want, but my personal view is that it was an accident.
Others say a financial crisis after Kagaz Ke Phool flopped led him to commit suicide. But he had made good money before that. Chaudhvin Ka Chand was one of the biggest revenue grossers in its time. He had made the film for Rs 1,800,000 and had earned Rs 4,800,000 from just the Bombay territory.
He had only two failures in life -- his first film Baaz, which he made in partnership with Haridarshan Kaur [Geeta Bali's sister], was a failure and the other was Kagaz Ke Phool. Kagaz Ke Phool was a masterpiece in the way it was executed. Every aspect of the film is out of this world. People did not understand the subject in its time. They understand the importance of it now. It was way ahead of its time.
My father never wanted any of us to join the film industry because he knew about its insecurities. He showed his insecurity after he made Kagaz Ke Phool. He had started getting recognition but he was pessimistic. He was introverted and could not talk about his feelings to others. He was a very sensitive person and spoke very little.
If you see his initial films -- Mr And Mrs 55 or Aar Paar -- you will notice he played very enthusiastic [exuberant] roles. By the time he did Pyaasa he had developed maturity. He changed completely with different films. He then carried that forward. Pyaasa was originally called Kashmakash. He wrote the script during the struggle of his early days. The idea was always with him. He wanted to first establish himself before going the artistic way.
I don't have many memories of him as a child. He was very fond of hunting. I went with him once to Kashmir and then again to Khandwa [Madhya Pradesh] with Johnny Uncle [Johnny Walker]. I fell into the Dal Lake in Srinagar twice and he jumped in to rescue me. He was a very reserved father, not an overly hugging type.
On our visit to the jungles of Khandwa our jeep broke down. We had to walk 15 kilometers to reach civilisation. I had a good time with him then. The biggest irony is he never won any awards. He never canvassed for awards. He never cared about them. Awards had lot of a politics behind them. He never wanted to be in that kind of politics. It is sad and unfortunate that he never got the recognition he deserved. Neither the media nor the industry gave him recognition then. Many reviews of his
films were nasty too.
The new generation has a lot to learn from him -- his dedication to work, the manner in which he worked on a subject, the way he used the trolley and camera. Though he aspired to make films without music he is still known for the best song picturisations in Indian cinema.
He was a reluctant actor. He never wanted to act but somehow he could not find the right kind of actors for his films and therefore he had to act in them. Shammi Kapoor, for instance, was supposed to do Aar Paar; Dilip Kumar was to play the poet in Pyaasa. He was a shy in front of the camera though he was always comfortable behind the camera.
If you see his films you will realise that they have not become irrelevant. All the problems of society he tackled are still relevant today. That's why his themes seem fresh though 40 years have passed. People can still identify with his films. They enjoy seeing them again and again.
I miss my father terribly. I wish I could have learnt a lot of things from him. More than the loss of a father I miss a good director under whom I could have learnt things. I think of him every day. I run his company and see his films every day. You always learn something when you see his films each time.

Can anyone give me a source or upload Gujarati songs of Geeta Dutt?
Hi BC
Thanx for the tremendous effort that it must have been to upload
all the 22 Geeta songs. THere were some excellent gems in that
list. Totally made my day.
Bappaditya da,
Bahut Bahut Shukriya.
FACTS I KNOW ABOUT GEETA DUTT:
(I have read/heard; I will keep adding if I find something)
1.)Born: 26th November, 1930 Father: Debendranath Roy Choudhury.
Brothers: Mukul Roy, Kanu Roy (both music directors)and someone (cannot remember his name, the youngest one, an (chemical or civil?) engineer) I spoke to in 1998, who lives in Arkansas, US.
There are more siblings---I don't know the names.
2.) She was the eldest daughter and was called "Ranga di" (Ranga is a better word for Red).
3.) She passed away on 7th July, 1972.
4.) Tarun Dutt wrote in an article in "Cine Blitz" titled "Was Guru Dutt Murdered?" that he thought his father's death was not a suicide. Infact he claims that people high up in Bombay Film industry were involved. Boxes of equipments simply vanished from the Guru Dutt Pvt. Ltd. studio overnight. Geeta Dutt had to sell all her jewellery and try to get out of debt. In the same article he says that his grandmother (Guru Dutt's mother) never really liked her and wanted Guru Dutt to pursue Waheeda Rehman. But in his mind Guru Dutt could not think of a second affair/marriage.In fact it is true he says, that Geeta Dutt and Mala Sinha were the only two people that Guru Dutt spoke to over the telephone the previous night of his demise. They (The Dutts) were thinking of giving their marriage a second try for the sake of the kids; the other person who he spoke to was Mala Sinha (who was then starring in Bahren Phir Bhi Aayegi about next days plans). Tarun Dutt thus raises the question "How can a person who was looking forward to all this commit suicide?"
(Can anyone find the article: It was in the 1980s (maybe late 80s)**
Tarun Dutt (eldest son) committed suicide later in 1980s, there was an article also in one of the well known magazines. The room where he was found contained all scattered pictures of Guru and Geeta Dutt and family pics.
5.) Someone who lived in the Santa Cruz mansion area, were Geeta Dutt spent her last days told me that she used to have a lot of wrangling with the servants as they complained that they got paid irregularly. At the same time a person who is close to Geeta Dutt's younger brother (referred to above) told me that her side of the family did not know anything or have any idea of Geeta was going through!!
6.) Another lady who was an audience in one of Geeta Dutt's stage shows (could be Delhi or Calcutta---I did not ask her) recalls how she could not continue singing and passed out and fell over the harmonium as she was intoxicated. Tarun Dutt writes in the abovementioned article that Geeta Dutt was reduced to performing stage shows to support them as her offers were greatly marginalized.
7.) Hemant Kumar mentioned in a Bengali article that Geeta was not available for rehearsals etc. due to her personal life problems.
8.) Geeta did call O.P. Nayyar and asked him, "Why don't you call me anymore?" (for recording). O.P. gave all the solos of Howrah Bridge to Asha and only one "Meraa Naam Chin Chin Choo" to Geeta.
9.) Another person, my next door neighbour in Calcutta , Late Asit Roy Choudhury (distantly related to the Geeta's family side) recalls that once when Geeta and Lata were staying at Hemanta Mukherjee's house in Bhawanipore area, after luch laid beside each other embracing each other like sisters. Hemanta called the teenagers and showed them what they were upto.
10.) V.K. Murthy (Guru Dutt's cameraman) says "One day, his wife and children left him and went to her place. He sold his house and shifted in a rented house at Peddar Road. But one cannot blame Geeta Dutt for walking out.

(I am trying to remember and write all the things that I heard about Geeta Dutt that I consider to be quite reliable. My memory of these facts go back to 1986).
In an article on the web: it is mentioned that Arun Dutt plans to have a memorial of Geeta Dutt as he had of Guru Dutt in 2004. Does anyone know about it?
Sorry, Urzung-bhai, that was the only Geeta-ji song I had from 'SAVERA".
Urzung-bhai:
Thanks a ton for that gem of a song. It is so familiar that I wondered, "Don't I have it"?.
In this sound-edited version, I've tried to reduce the disturbances on the track without compromising the voice-recording:

It is a delight to see this thread developing after a very slow start and progressing to this 13th 'page'!
In a recent post, one of our members Priya (a fanatical fan of Asha-ji who claims to be a wise and erudite music lover) made an apt observation: "As for Geeta she is one singer who almost 99% of music lovers like--U rarely see anyone who does not like Geeta".
By my teenage years (when I became a devoted listener of HFM), Geeta-ji was already passe'. Her most productive years were during the preceding decade. Geeta-ji managed to hold her own against Lata, and the two were the premier female playback singers of the 1950s. Reportedly, there was no rivalry between them. On the contrary they were not only friends, but Lata-ji was also a confidante in whom Geeta-ji reposed her personal problems.
In my personal recollection, Geeta-ji's last 'major' songs through the 60's were:
"Rimjhim ke tarane leke aai barsaat" (duet with Rafi-sahab in "KALA BAZAAR"), which to date, remains one of the best rain songs.
"Koi door aawaaz de, chaley aao" from "SAHIB, BIWI AUR GHULAM" -- a song on par with "Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam" from "KAGHAZ KE PHOOL" for its haunting quality.
To some of us, it was a 'sacrilege' to make singers of the stature of Manna Dey and Geeta Dutt sing "Main Tere Pyar Mein Kya Kya Na Bana" for the comedian/comedienne in "ZIDDI".
But a year before her death, she came back with 3 fabulous numbers in Basu Bhattacharya's 'ANUBHAV":
Meri Jaan Mujhe Jaan na Kaho Meri Jaan
Koi Chupke se Aake
Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota
These are considered some of the finest work that Geeta Dutt ever did. What a fitting swan-song!
In retrospect, Geeta-ji comes across as a tragic figure in Indian Film Music History. A truly beautiful woman, and gifted with an equally beautiful voice, plus talent to match, who rose to fame and fortune --- before sad circumstances took her spiralling down.
But she has left behind her voice, her songs --- for us to enjoy, to treasure, to seek and discover.

Also if you read the Screenindia.com article on My Son Gurudutt by Vasanthi Padukone, there is not a single good word that Guru Dutt's mother has about Geeta. (excepting that she was a talented artiste: that's the obvious!!). That is really upsetting.
I mean if her son fell in love with Geeta Roy, she must have had very special human qualities etc. Moreover V.K. Murthy says that one cannot blame Geeta for walking out on the marriage!!
Just some thoughts...

I have a suggestion. since this is a Forum for Geeta Dutt, it should have a list (exhaustive) of songs of her's. For this I will create a common account in the forum with a common password. Anyone can go in and add to the list (which will be alphabetical order, probably with film name, music director and lyricist).
Hindi, Bengali and Gujarati may be the categories.
This will help us to know what songs we have not heard and try to acquire them!!
Let me know what you all think: Unni ji, Priya ji, Mahesh ji, Vikram ji etc. etc.
Regards-
Bappa
Here are the account details.
USERNAME: geetaduttfans
PASSWORD: geeta1234
1.) Use the EDIT button on the righthand lower corner to add to the list.
2.) Remember alphabetically (starting with the alphabet of the first word of the song, please try not to double post to avoid confusion.)
3.) For Non-filmi songs (e.g. as adhunik bengali songs etc.) put NF after the song.
Hope this will be a success!!

(This is a song where parvati (daughter of himalaya) is going to her in-laws place and her mother is giving her advice on how to behave and not to forget the land and river which gave her food and water.
This song is a picturization of the bride's mother's state of mind and emotions when her daughter is leaving for her husband's abode.)

In this song Radha is looking for Sri krishna as the evening is now going into late night. she is worried and she says it was because of Krishna that her reputation was bad.
MUSIC: Mukul Roy. (Geeta Dutt's brother).
LYRICS: Vasudev
This is again one of the classics of Geeta Dutt. In this song Vishnupriya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's wife is telling her story to her mother-in-law. She says that in all the four ages when she and Narayan came as human beings to this earth, she only had sorrows in her life.
In Satyayuga; she was Satyanarayani, but Rishi Durwasa cursed her to take human birth.
In Tretayuga she was Lord Rama's wife Sita and she was abandoned in a forest.
In Dapuryuga she was Radha who was given a bad reputation by her in-laws of the Ayan family as she was Krishnakamini (Krishnakolonkini).
In Kaliyuga her husband leaves her to become Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from Gourango.
So in four ages she was always "Janamdukhini".

Hi All
Is there any update on the release of this biographical book on Geetaji ?
Coming soon, the life story of the chin, chin choo lady
Geeta Dutt, who would have turned 75 today, will now be immortalised in a first-ever biography

Hi All
Geetaji's photo on this Legendary Singers page was changed recently on my request by the Admin.
http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showforum=114
Please give your comments/feedback on the same.
TIA
Parag
yes paragji only this one was available coloured. its strange that even BBC London used b/w camera at the times when this coloured snap was taken by her fan
Hi Ushaji, CM2 ji, Ashish
Many thanks for your inputs. I honestly felt that Geetaji did look quite beautiful in this photo and that too it was a colour photo. So I thought of requesting the admin to replace her old pic (which looked more like a pencil sketch) with this one.
Please suggest if you have a better pic in that place !
Thanks and warmest regards
Parag
Hi All
Please let me know how you feel about this pic to be posted on the legendary singers page. The admin can resize the pic if necessary.
TIA
Parag
