Here are the lyrics of the song... could not catch some of the words though...

Kabhi Chand ki tarah tapki
Kabhi Raah Mein Padi paayi
Attanni Si Zindagi ye zindagi
Kabhi Cheenk Ki tarah Khanki
Kabhi Jeb Se Nikal Aayi
Attani Si Zindagi...

Kabhi Chehre Pe Jadi Dekhi
Kahin Mod Pe Khadi Dekhi
Sheeshe ke martbano(?) mein
Dukano Pe Padi Dekhi
Chaukanni Si Zindagi
Ye Zindagi...

(?) Laga Ke Milti Hai
Masoomiyat Se Khilti Hai
Kabhi (?) haath mein lekar
Shakhon Pe Baithi Hilti Hai
Nahni si Zindagi yeh zindagi

Madhavi,

Thanks for these songs. I am not familiar with this song; but happened to have the lyrics.

I have the questionable words as follows:
'Sheeshe ke martbaanon'
'tamage lagaake milte hai ...'
'kabhi phool haath mein lekar ...'

Thanks Anjvajay just corrected the info.

A shift from "modern" Gulzar to early Gulzar and one of his signature songs...

Song: Hamne dekhi hai in aankhon ki mehakti khushboo.
Film: Khamoshi (1969)
Singer: Lata
Music: Hemant Kumar
Lyrics: Gulzar

Hamne dekhi hai un aankhon ki mehekti khushboo
Haath se chooke ise rishton ka ilzaam na do
Sirf ehsaas hai ye rooh se mehsoos karo
Pyar ko pyar hi rehne do koi naam na do

Pyar koi bol nahin pyar awaaz nahin
Ek khamoshi hai sunti hai kaha karti hai
Na ye bujhti hai na rukti hai na thehri hai kahin
Noor ki boond hai sadiyon se baha karti hai
Sirf ehsaas hai ye rooh se mehsoos karo
Pyar ko pyar hi rehne do koi naam na do
Hamne dekhi hai...

Muskurahat si khili rehti hai aankhon mein kahin
Aur palkon pe ujale se chupe rehte hain
Hont kuch kehte nahi kaapte hoton pe magar
Kitne khamosh se afsane ruke rehte hain
Sirf ehsaas hai ...

Bimal Roy's assistant, Asit Sen remade his Bengali hit movie -Deep Jele Jaye (1959) - ten years later in Hindi as Khamoshi. Waheeda Rehman plays the central character of the nurse working in a hospital for the mentally disturbed. Hemant Kumar was the music director for both the Hindi and the Bengali versions. In this Lata solo, the scenes shifts between Waheeda travelling in a taxi and the actress in the radio station actually singing the song. This song not only talks of the 'fragrance of the eyes' but also talks of having seen it. How does one see fragrance? IMO the same way one smells the sounds of "silence".

Very well put BC. Gulzar's extreme romanticism, love as pure emotion, "haath se chuke use rishton ka ilzaam na do". Was in love with the song for ever. It is very difficult to distance oneself from such a song, love as "khamoshi", receptive, hesitant, passionate, on the verge of being spoken... The song conjures up such incredible images.

However, as you mention, in the movie the scene shifts between the actress singing the song and Waheeda Rehman which creates a distance between the extreme romanticism of the song and the consequences of love on the three main characters in the movie. The song may not have ironical overtones but the way it is used in the movie(it is the title song of the movie), it cannot but underline the tragic irony of the situation. Love has such disastrous consequences in the movie, it is so self-centered, destructive, pushing people into the the dark world of insanity...

Ek Hi Khwab Kai Baar Dekha Hai Maine
Kinara(1977)

Ek hi khwab kai baar dekha hai maine
Tune saari mein udas li hai meri chabhiyan...ghar ki
Aur chali aayi hai bas yunhi mera haath pakad kar
Ek hi khwab kai baar dekha hai maine....

Tikku...

Mej par phool sajate hue dekha hai kai baar(2)
Aur bistar se kai baar jagaya hai tujhko
Chalte phirte tere kadmon ki woh aahat bhi suni hai
Ek hi khwab kai baar dekha hai maine

Ye Chitthi hai ya kavita
Abhi tak to kavita hai

Gungunati hai nikli hai nahake jab bhi(2)
Apne bheege hue baalon se tapakta pani
Mere chehre pe chitak deti hai...tu tikku ki bachhi
Ek hi khwab kai baar..

Tash ke patton pe ladti hai kabhi kabhi khel mein mujhse (2)
Aur kabhi ladki bhi hai ke bas khel rahi hai mujhse
Aur aagosh mein nanhe ko liye...
Will you shut up...

Aur janti ho Tikku jab maine ye khwab dekha tha
Apne bistar pe mein us waqt pada jaag raha tha...

Here is the video link of the song on YouTube:

One of my favorite songs... the intimacy is so vividly captured in the lyrics, the score, the singers and the pair enacting the scene... Fits in beautifully in the movie... Dharmendra is Hema's fiance who is tragically killed in an accident by Jeetendra. Inspite of Jeetendra's love (and the movie is definitly the love story of Hema and Jeetendra)... Hema is trapped in the past and does not want to come out of it and the song is a revelation of the passion and harmony of that past relationship which is contrasted with the jarring sets of circumstances that the relationship between Jeetendra and Hema is built upon and Gulzar's genius is to show the beauty and passion in both ... What a gorgeous movie it was... supported by Pancham's incredible score. Each song in the album is a gem.

RD always grumbled affectionately about this song and the "Mera Kuch Samaan Song" as two of the most eccentric tracks that he had to compose for Gulzar...Note the guitar strumming in the song... by Bhupinder... wub.gif

Found a very informative interview in which Gulzar talks in detail about the song... am pasting that article here posted in Pancham yahoo groups by Vinayak...

Subject: Gulzar talks about Ek hi Khwaab - Filmfare April 2005
List-id: <pancham.yahoogroups.com>

http://www.filmfare.com/articleshow/107677...1&botlink=1

Lo, Chaabiyan aa gayeen
Pancham Always had the last word

I'd always wanted to write songs that could be part of the narrative,
or in the form of a scene that could be set to music. Generally
speaking, songs are treated like item numbers in Hindi movies. The
story pauses for the song and then continues till the next song
arrives. I wanted to do something different.

Ek hi khwab kayee baar dekha hai maine from Kinara was one such
experiment. Though it never set a trend, it was well appreciated. It's
not a song, it's a scene that has been shot musically. It has lines
like, 'Tiku ki bacchi, will you shut up?'

When I took Ek hi khwab to Pancham, his first reaction was, "Kya hai
yeh... gaana hai ya scene hai?" I told him, "Yeh scene hai, par isse
gaana hai." At which, he smacked his forehead in exas- peration and
exclaimed, "Koi kaam seedha nahin karta hai."

After much grumbling, he deigned to read the song. He'd just reached
the second line when his frown deepened. The line was Tune sari mein
uddas li hain meri chaabiyan ghar ki. He pushed away his harmonium and
started off again, "Is this a song? Chaabiyan koi poetry hoti hai?"
Every time he hummed the tune, he'd stop at chaabiyan, grumble some
more and request me to change the word. But I was adamant. He tried
his best to make me change my mind but I didn't budge.

(For a long time after that, he'd address me as Chaabiyan. Every time
I entered his music room, he'd go, "Lo, Chaabiyan aa gayeen." And
after that incident, he'd get after me whenever I used an unusual
word. Which was quite often.)

The song was recorded in Hema Malini's and Bhupinder's voices. Now
Hema is very surili; she really sings well. And every time she'd sing
her lines, Bhupi would get upset. When he couldn't hold back any
longer, he burst out, "She's too good, yaar!"

(I'd seen something similar happening between Manna De and Meena
Kumari in Pinjare Ke Panchi. He wouldn't say anything to her but he'd
come up to me and the sound recordist and complain, "Yaar, it's very
difficult to sing in front of her. Main unko dekhoon, ya unse baat
karoon, ya gaana gaoon?

After we recorded Ek hi khwab, Pancham decided he wanted to add to
the song. So he just handed Bhupi a pair of headphones and told him to
strum his guitar spontaneously. Would you believe it; Bhupi did it in
one take. He asked for another take but Pancham felt the first was
perfect. That's why I always say that Pancham always had the last
word. He knew his job and you couldn't question him.

Next came the picturisation. The song was supposed to be a flashback
in the film and we wanted a star for a guest appearance. I was a
little embarrassed to ask Hema Malini to put in a word with
Dharmendra. Though their romance was already in the air, they were
still hush-hush about it and were still in the we-are-just-friends
stage. But when we were discussing the names of actors we could
approach, she surprised me by asking shyly, "Why my friend cannot play
that role?"

She didn't have to name him; you could read his name written all over
her face. So I called up Dharmendra and he agreed to do the role right
then, on the phone. I remain grateful to him for that; it was such a
beautiful gesture. I think he liked working with me, because one day
he asked me, "Kya guest role hi karvaoge mujhse? "
I told him we'd work together and offered him the title role in
Devdas. It was the role of a lifetime. Unfortunately the movie was
shelved after two schedules. I still feel he was the best choice for
that role. I never worked with him ever again. My dream of working
with Dharmendra ended there. Bas ek hi khwab kayee baar dekha maine...

Bhupendar written all over the song. Thanks Madhavi for the article.
The chemistry between Garam-Dharam and Hema is joy to watch(specially in films like

Could sumone post lyrics of "Anki chali banki chali", please

Hmmm... Baanki Chali...mmm Jhaanki chali
Panta Bhate Tatka Begun Pora....
Aanki chali baanki chali
Chowringhee mein Jhanki Chali
Panta bhate tatka begun pora

Ek gali se jhumman nikle
Ek gali se jhuniya
Beech sadak pe ho gayi saari
Bhaad mein jaaye duniya
Jhoom jhoom ke jhoomke naache Jhuniya
Nache Jhuniya bai
Sau sau phere leve jhumman
Khoob baji shehnai...
Aanki chali...

Jhumman ke ghar beti janmi
Jhuniya jaise gaal
Mooch marod ke nikle Jhumman
Ja pahunche sasural(2)
Baat Baat Pe Khansi Bole
Paani Mange Aag(?)
Pyase mar gaye Jhumman miya
Par na chhodi taap
Aanki chali...

Jeem Se Jhumman Jheem Jalebi...
Jhumman Jhunniya Jeem
Har litti(?) ki patti padke
Jhumman hue hakeem
Phool phool ke phulka phule
Pichak pichak pichkari
Nimki lave katha chuna
Mithhu Paan Supari
Aanki chali...

Aaki chali baaki chali

BC you owe me for this one...had to play the song ten times at least to catch all the words... Your comments please...

Sorry Madhavi. Nazar der se padi.

Thanks for the lyrics. Song is a feather in his cap. He didn't write many
folk songs/songs based on folklores and tales earlier.

Master ji ki chitthi (Kitaab) is a song of different genre.

He gradually slipped into the mould of Versatile Lyricist. Good example.
He tried to remain a poet always, though.

(We are not including new songs in the discussion.)

Maya Memsaab (1992)

khud se baatein karte rehna
Baatein karte rehna
Aankhen moonde din mein meethi
Raatein bharte rehna

Khudse kehna jaati hoon main
Khudse kehna aayi main
Aisa bhi to hota hai na
Behki si tanhai mein
Tanhai mein tasveeron ke
Chehre bharte rehna...

Bheege bheege mausam mein kyun
Bharkha pyaasi lagti hai
Jee to khush hota hai lekin
Ek Udasi rehti hai
Ay we hi bas roothi khud se
Ay wein man se(?) rehna...

Ketan Mehta's uneven film based on Flaubert's Madame Bovary. As often happens with adaptations, comparisons are inevitable. The story is about a bored house-wife with an overly romantic sensibility (in the novel she is shown as reading "romances" and Ketan Mehta innovatively changes it to Deepa Sahi's obsession with Hindi films). However, the book which is a sympathetic yet unrelenting critique of the romantic sensibility as well as an exposure of the emptiness of provincial life is sort of lost in the film which indulges in romantic and lush picturizations of Maya's dreams... I am not sure that using Gulzar as the lyricist of the movie was a strength or not...

In the song Maya's loneliness is evident but the perceptions (barkha pyaasi, tanhai mein tasveeron ke chehre bharte rehna...etc etc) seem more Gulzarish than the character's. And the same goes for the other superb songs in the movie... they don't fit with the character IMO...

A request: There is a short song in the movie by HMangeshkar: "Maya Jaagi Chhaya jaagi" . Could someone upload it please? TIA
