When chosen to play the title role in Ang Lee’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s Life Of Pi, Delhi-based teenager Suraj Sharma was thrilled.

But soon after his name was announced, Suraj was whisked away overnight to a secluded part of Taiwan. He will undergo intense training there before he faces the camera in late 2011.

He will spend the next two years shuttling between Taiwan, the US and finally Pondicherry, where Life Of Pi will be shot.

So what happens to the teenager’s education? Apparently Suraj can’t attend school in the interim period. He will be provided private tutors for whichever part of the world he is taken to.

Says a source close to the project, “It’s all very well for Ang Lee to talk about Pi’s natural talent and the aura that he carries. Those are just the starting points.

Now begins Suraj’s real training as an actor. Ang Lee has taken complete charge of the boy. For the next two years Suraj will be preparing for his part as Pi, while being completely cut off from his family and friends in Delhi.”

As per the role requirement for Pi’s character, Suraj will be taught to acclimatise himself to long hours of isolation. How that would affect the youngster is something only time will tell.

Sharmila

When I saw the title of your post Life of Pi under the Hollywood section, I thought here we go again. Hollywood is going to massacre another great novel and one that I particularly enjoyed. So, its great to see that the director is the brilliant Ang Lee, who has actually made a better version of Sense and Sensibility and Brokeback Mountain than the original written novel and short story.

I think Yann Martel is fortunate to have his novel interpreted by someone as intelligent as Lee. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Post our report on newcomer Suraj Singh playing the protagonist in Ang Lee’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestseller Life Of Pi there is better news.

The latest buzz is that while the Academy Award winning director is auditioning actors like Sushant Singh and Sonu Sood to cast Pi’s father, he has apparently signed Tabu to play the role of Pi’s mother in the film. The makers of the film will start shooting in Pondicherry in January 2011.

Our source said, “Ang Lee was in Mumbai some days ago and stayed in a five star hotel in Bandra. His casting director and he had shortlisted some actors who were called for auditions.”

Confirming this, Sushant Singh said, “Yes, I met Ang Lee and his casting director. I had sent them a tape and they called me to meet them. They have shortlisted a couple of people and I am one of the contenders. I am hoping for the best.”

Meanwhile, Lee apparently also met Tabu and signed her on for the role of Pi’s mother. Tabu has been very selective with her choice of films of late. She was last seen in Toh Baat Pakki earlier this year and in Cheeni Kum in 2007.

Though the actress has worked in a couple of films down South, she has not signed on any new Bollywood films in the meantime.

Another source close to the film said, “Ang Lee had been watching Tabu’s work and was very impressed by her acting abilities.” Though Tabu did not revert to any of our messages, we wish her luck for her new venture.
