Hi friends......

Frankly, I'm not sure about this...... But seems, yesterday was Geeta Dutt's birthday........... Radio City Mumbai featured a special programme on her yesterday night, and played most of her popular, lovely songs..... I did enjoy the programme, but the birthday part was news to me..... Maybe someone would know more about it????

Geeta Dutt was born on 23rd Nov? Oh My God! I didnt know that! Thats when my eldest sister was born who is coming today, and I am going to see her after 10 years! I am so excited. Happy Birthday - both to Geeta Dutt and my sister

In 2 weeks from now (on 23rd November to be precise) , we have birth anniversary of our beloved singer. I accidentally came to know about this when searching on net.

you seem to be having many of her rare and popular songs.
why don't you organize a radio show?
i don't think you have ever hosted a radio show before.
if not, this will be great occasion to do so.

( if you feel one particular song should be included and you don't have it, then you could request other members before the show to send it to you. it has worked this way before. )

november 23 falls on thursday.

you can check if there is any slot free on that day. or if its not possible on working day, then weekend next to it.

also you could compose a quiz with questions about her songs, music directors, lyricists etc.

what do you say?

Hi August, many thanks for your feedback. Yes, you are right, I have never played DJ/RJ here on HF radio.
I tried to go through the technicalities today morning. Lets see how it goes !

BTW, I have booked an event on that day.

Here is what I think we can plan (with help from every one)

1) Radio program (as rightly suggested)
2) Quiz ( I think one for fans and one for fanatics)
3) I thread dedicated to duets : Badalate Saathi ( A duet each with all possible combinations)
4) May be some more pictures of her (Zippoo ji has some pics of her, but he hasnt visited teh GD sub-forum in a while)


I will start working on the quiz and duets thing.

Please come forward with your suggestions and lets make it an eventful day !

How about a theme for the radio program - say 1 song from each year of her 25 year singing career from 1946 to 1971 (Do Bhai to Anubhav).
For those who cannot receive radio due to technical reasons, this could be accompanied by a thread with the songs played in the radio program.

how about putting the notice about her marathi songs in legendary singer's forum?

that way many non-marathi fans would notice it.

geetaji's anniversary is the right time to have geetaji back on the front page.somewhere in march -april 2005,it was decided by the administrators to have geetaji on the front page after repeated requests from some of us.she was there for about a week ,then the legendary singers sub-forum was started and geetaji's name was included amongst them.
i think her 76th birth anniversary would be the right time[and tribute] to have her back on front page.

for kind consideration of pradeeepji.

Me also in favour of putting this Geeta Dutt forum in the main one....as far as I remember that was indeed for fews days ..but after some time our admin had shifted it in sub forum...May be due to less no. of responses in the forum..but now as this one also seems a quite busy forum...it should be promoted in the main forum.

That was great clue Nimii. I found "Ankh jo dekhe woh dhoka khaye hain" which is a trio of Geetaji, Mukesh saab and Rajkumari ji (with some dialogues of Raj Kapoor and Madhubala)

So now need help on songs with S D Batish saab, A R Oza and Pankaj Malik (if there is any song of Geetaji with this legendary artiste)

My search on google has not yielded any promising results Nimii. It seems that even though she did sing a few songs (One I know is from Zalzala) under the baton of legendary Pankaj Malik, she probably did not sing a duet/trio song with him...

I don't think that any duet of Geeta Ji & Pt.S.D.Batish exist.
BTW Geeta Ji has sung a song under his composition :-

Small information on songs of Geetaji :

According to Mr. Hamraaz of Geet Kosh, Geeta ji sang approximately 1200 songs in Hindi films.

The decadewise breakup is
340(approx.) in the 40's,
755(approx.) in the 50's,
85(approx.) in the 60's
and
a few songs in the 70's.

Ex: 1950 is counted in 40's and like wise.

How about a theme for the radio program - say 1 song from each year of her 25 year singing career from 1946 to 1971 (Do Bhai to Anubhav).
For those who cannot receive radio due to technical reasons, this could be accompanied by a thread with the songs played in the radio program.

CM2 ji, I have got this song now. Thanks so much.. I think even in this year, this is the only song of hers. Probably after Guru Dutt's death in 1964, assignments coming to her almost stopped.

As far as 1968 and 1969 are concerned, it is more or less confirmed that there are no songs of hers in these 2 years.

May be its too late to think for this year, but does any one have any contact details of Geeta ji's 2 children, namely Arun Dutt and Nina Menon ?

I have read some where that Arun ji is settled in Pune. (August ji, can we trouble you please ???)



No idea on whereabouts of Nina.

We can probably invite both of them to see the celebration in the memory of their mother next year.

Hi Niki(ta),

Yes it was changed about 2 months back on my request. Well, it does look kinda pale and has a yellowish tinge compared to the other pics.

I think the admin team is going to do some thing about it.

Hi All

Taking this opportunity to thank every one who helped in completing the special program on Geetaji's birth anniversary.

The banners were simply superb. Almost everyone helped me with the "Badalate Hue Saathi" thread and the 2 quizes.

Looking forward to make some more specials on our beloved singer !

While searching on the net, I found this article. It suggests that the day we launched our site www.geetadutt.com on the birth anniversary of Geeta ji, a program was done in Bangalore in her memory.

I was told by Indoo ji that there was some coverage of this program in the print media. Also I see a banner of a local radio station "Radio One".

It will be nice if any one can share any information related to this program.

I just now spoke with Indoo ji. She was very happy to know that there are some fans of Geeta Dutt ji who still remember her. She said that the program in memory of Geeta ji was successful. She is going to email me the photos of the event and some reviews/news about the program which came in the newspaper. I have told her about HF and also about www.geetadutt.com.

May be we can organize a similar program on this year 20th July some place. Ideas most welcome!

Haimanti ji (Author of the book on Geeta ji) told me that a similar program was held in Pune on the same day (23rd November 2008) as well. The venue was Yashawantrao Chavan Natya Gruh (Auditorium) and it is said that the program was house full. The only down side was that it had too much emphasis on her songs from Guru Dutt films.

"मेरा नाम चिन चिन चू...' सारखे नटखट गाणे असो; "आज सजन मोहे अंग लगा लो...'मधील आर्तता असो, की "वक्त ने किया...'मधील सर्वस्व गमावून बसल्याची भावना असो... गीता दत्तच्या आवाजाने श्रोत्यांच्या काळजाची तार छेडली नाही, असे कधी झालेच नाही. खास स्वतःचा, वेगळ्या बाजाचा आवाज घेऊन आलेल्या या गायिकेने ३७ वर्षांपूर्वी २० जुलैला या जगाचा निरोप घेतला... हिंदी चित्रपटसृष्टीतील या अविस्मरणीय "गीता'च्या आठवणी....

त्या दिवशी... रात्री... संगीतकार ओ. पी. नय्यरच्या घरचा फोन खणखणला.. नय्यरने रिसीव्हर उचलला, कानाला लावला... पलीकडे त्याच्या ओळखीचा आवाज होता... मदिरेच्या अमलाखाली असलेल्या त्या स्त्री-स्वरातून सातत्याने, पण अडखळत एक वाक्‍य ओ. पी.च्या कानावर पडत होते... "नय्यरसाब! आप तो हमें भूलही गये...' कशीबशी समजूत काढून ओ. पी.ने फोन ठेवला, पण त्याच्या मनात विचारांचे वादळ थैमान घालत होते. कारण?... कारण तो फोन "गीता दत्त'चा होता... हो! तीच पूर्वाश्रमीची गीता रॉय... सावळी; पण सतेज टवटवीत चेहऱ्याची... गोड, खळखळून हसणारी... बंगाली युवती!

भजन असो, वेस्टर्न कॅबेरे असो, छेडखानीवालं खट्याळ गाणं असो, भावगीत असो वा विरहगीत असो... उत्कटता, आर्त-व्याकुळता, मादकता, नशीलं आव्हान, विरह, खट्याळपणा, नखरा, हुरहूर... गाण्यातले हे सगळे "भाव' आपल्या आवाजातून यथार्थपणे "व्यक्त' करणारी... हिंदी चित्रपटसृष्टीतील पहिली "हरहुन्नरी' किंवा "अष्टपैलू' पार्श्‍वगायिका "गीता दत्त'!

सचिनदेव बर्मन

"शिकारी', "आठ दिन'सारख्या चित्रपटांना संगीत देऊनही अडखळत चालणारी दादा बर्मनची संगीत कारकीर्द आणि १९४६ च्या "सर्कसकिंग'च्या "प्रीत किसीको न छोडे' या गाण्याद्वारे पदार्पण करणाऱ्या गीताची संगीतसफर खऱ्या अर्थाने बहरली ती म्हणजे "दो भाई' या चित्रपटापासून.. दादा आणि गीता या दोघांनाही व्यावसायिक स्थैर्य आणि लोकप्रियता मिळवून देणारे ते गाणे होते... "मेरा सुंदर सपना बीत गया...' त्यापाठोपाठ आला १९५० सालचा "नवकेतन'चा "बाजी'! गुरुदत्त, देव आनंद, बर्मनदा, गीता, साहिर... अशी एक ताज्या दमाची "टीम' अस्तित्वात येत होती. देव आनंदला रुपेरी पडद्यावर "रोमॅंटिक क्रिमिनल' हिरोची इमेज बहाल करणाऱ्या "ट्रेंड सेटर' "बाजी'ने गीतालासुद्धा एक नवे व्यक्तिमत्त्व देऊ केले. दादा बर्मनला सूर गवसला आणि मग "याद करोगे याद करोगे...'सारखी रडकी गाणी गाणारी गीता दत्त "तदबीर से बिगडी हुई तकदीर बना ले...', "सुनो गजर क्‍या गाये...', "ये कौन आया...', "आज की रात पिया दिल ना तोडो...' (सर्व ः बाजी) अशी भन्नाट गाणी गायला लागली.

सचिनदांनी गीताच्या आवाजाचा सर्वांगसुंदर वापर आपल्या गाण्यांमध्ये केला. तिच्या आवाजाला कारुण्याची किनार होती ज्याचा प्रभावी वापर दादांनी "आज सजन मोहे अंग लगाओ...' (प्यासा), "कान्हा आन मिलो...' (देवदास), "वक्त ने किया क्‍या हॅंसी सितम...' (कागज के फूल)... यासारख्या गाण्यांमध्ये केला. "जाने क्‍या मैंने कही...' (प्यासा), "दिल का तराना गा ले...' (सोसायटी), "चुपकेसे मिले प्यासे प्यासे...' (मंजील), "सोच समझकर दिल को लगाना...' (जाल), "नन्ही कली सोने चली...' (सुजाता) ही दादा-गीता कॉंबिनेशनची गाणी गीताचे पार्श्‍वगायनातले वैविध्य सांगण्यास पुरेशी आहेत.

पार्श्‍वगायनाच्या क्षेत्रामध्ये "अष्टपैलू' गायिका म्हणून स्वतःचे अढळ स्थान निर्माण करणाऱ्या "आशा'ला कारकिर्दीच्या सुरवातीला "गीता'चा आदर्श गिरवावा लागला, यातच सगळे काही आले. सचिनदांनी या दोन्ही गायिकांना "बचपन के दिन भी क्‍या दिन थे...' (सुजाता) आणि "जानू जानू रे काहे खनके है तोरा कंगना...' (इन्सान जाग उठा) या गाण्यांत एकत्र आणून "कानसेनांना' मेजवानीच दिली.

ओ. पी. नय्यर

"आसमान' या चित्रपटासाठी ओ.पी.कडे गीता प्रथम गायली. "देखो जादूभरे मोरे नैन...' व "दिल है दिवाना...' ही सुंदर गाणी त्यात होती; पण चित्रपट आपटला. त्यापाठोपाठ आलेले "बाझ' व "छम छमा छम'देखील कोसळले; तरीही "संगीत चांगलं होतं' या शिफारशीवर गीताने "आरपार' मिळवून दिला; पण गुरुदत्त कोणतीही "रिस्क' घ्यायला तयार नव्हता. त्यानं "बिंग क्रॉस्बी'च्या रेकॉर्डसचा गठ्ठा ओ.पी. पुढे ठेवला व "संगीत हे असं असायला हवं' असं फर्मान सोडलं... झालं... त्या चालींवर ओ.पी.चं नशीलं कलम चढलं आणि मुंबईतले हमरस्ते आणि तमाम गल्लीबोळ रुपेरी पडद्यावर दाखवत गीताच्या आवाजातील "बाबूजी धीरे चलना...', "ये लो मैं हारी पिया...', "हूँ अभी मैं जवॉं ऐ दिल...' अशा धुंद गीतांची बरसात करत १९५४ मध्ये "आरपार' रुपेरी पडद्यावर झळकला.

गीताच्या नशील्या आवाजानं या चालीचं सोनं केलं. ओ.पी.ला त्याची "स्टाइल' सापडली. गीता मग ओ.पी.च्या संगीतातील "प्राण' झाली. "सच सच बोल नहीं बतिया बना...' (मिस कोकाकोला), "ठंडी हवा काली घटा...' (मि. अँड मिसेस ५५), "रात नशीली रंगरंगीली...', "गोरी गोरी रात है...' (भागम्‌भाग), "कैसा जादू बलम तूने डाला...' (१२'े उश्रेलज्ञ), "चंदा चांदनी में जब चमके...' (मुजरिम), "मेरा नाम चिन चिन चू...' (हावडा ब्रीज) आणि जे गाणं कधीच पाहायला मिळालं नाही... ते "जाता कहॉं है दिवाने...' (सी.आय.डी.).

दादा बर्मनकडे "रिमझिम के तराने लेके आयी बरसात...' (कालाबाजार) सारखं "नॉस्टॅल्जिक' गाणं रफीबरोबर गाणाऱ्या गीतानं ओ.पी.कडे मात्र रफीबरोबर अक्षरशः धमाल केलीये. "सुन सुन सुन जालिमा...', "मुहब्बत करलो...', "अरे ना ना तौबा...' (आरपार), "जाने कहॉं मेरा जिगर...', "चल दिये बंदा नवाज...', "उधर तुम हॅंसी हो...' (मि. अँड मिसेस ५५), "गरीब जान के...' (छूमंतर), "आँखोंही आँखोंमे...', "ऐ दिल है मुश्‍कील...' (सीआयडी), "तुम जो हुअे मेरे हमसफर....' (१२'े उश्रेलज्ञ), यअच्छा जी माफ कर दो...' (मुसाफिरखाना).. अशा अनेक गीतांमध्ये तिने रफीबरोबर "छेडखानी' केलीये.

इतर संगीतकार

सचिनदा आणि ओ.पी. यांचं संगीत आपल्या आवाजानं समृद्ध करत असताना इतर अनेक संगीतकारांकडे वैविध्यपूर्ण गाणी गीताने गायली. "न जाओ सैंया छुडाके बैंया...', "पिया ऐसो जिया में...' (साहिब बीवी और गुलाम) - हेमंतकुमार, "ऐ दिल मुझे बता दे...' (भाईभाई) - मदनमोहन, "आ जाने वफा...' (अनारकली) - बसंत प्रकाश, "जाते हो तो जाओ पर...' (मिलाप) - एन. दत्ता, "है ये दुनिया कौनसी...' (सैलाब) - मुकुल रॉय, "ठहरो जरासी रात तो...' (सवेरा) - शैलेश मुखर्जी, "मेरी जा मुझे जा न कहो...' (अनुभव) - कनू रॉय (घोष?). संगीतकार बुलो सी. रानीनं संगीत दिलेल्या "जोगन' मध्ये तर "सबकुछ गीता' आहे. मीराबाईंची सुंदर भजनं असलेल्या या चित्रपटामध्ये भक्तिरसानं ओथंबलेली जी गाणी तिनं गायलीत त्याला तोड नाही. "घुंघट के पट खोल तोहे पिया मिलेंगे...', "मैं तो गिरिधर के घर जाऊँ...', "हिरी मैं तो प्रेमदिवानी...', "द्वार खुले मनमंदिरके...' आणि "अप्रतिम' असं "जोगी मत जा...' त्या काळच्या सर्व मान्यवर संगीतकारांकडे तिने गाणी गायली.

गुरुदत्तशी विवाह

एक अष्टपैलू पार्श्‍वगायिका म्हणून आपली कारकीर्द बहरलेली असतानाच गीताची गाठ गुरुदत्तसारख्या हळुवार, संवेदनशील दिग्दर्शकाशी पडली. सूर जुळले.. मैत्र जडले आणि परिणती प्रेमात झाली. २६ मे १९५३ रोजी गीता रॉय सौ. गीता दत्त झाली. विवाहानंतर मात्र तिने आपल्या संसाराकडे लक्ष देता यावे म्हणून फक्त गुरुदत्तच्याच चित्रपटामध्ये गाण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. अर्थातच त्यामुळे दादा बर्मन, ओ. पी. व हेमंतकुमार वगळता इतर संगीतकारांकडे तिचा आवाज ऐकू येईनासा झाला.

पण तरीही तिच्या विश्‍वात ती सुखी होती; पण जेव्हा वहिदा रेहमानच्या कथित प्रकरणाचा समावेश तिच्या आयुष्यात झाला, तेव्हा मात्र संसारातला समतोल ढासळला. "कागज के फूल'च्या जबरदस्त अपयशामुळे गुरुदत्त आपला आत्मविश्‍वास गमावून बसला. गीतासाठी त्याने "गौरी' चित्रपटाचे काम सुरू केले होते; पण नंतर त्याने ते अर्धवट सोडून दिले. हळूहळू गीता आतून खचत होती आणि तिकडे गुरुदत्तही...! "साहिब बीवी और गुलाम' आणि "चौदहवी का चॉंद'नंतर वहिदाने गुरुदत्तच्या मर्जीविरुद्ध बाहेरच्या चित्रपटांमध्ये काम करायला सुरवात केली. हा धक्का गुरुदत्तला सहन झाला नाही. आत्मविश्‍वास गमावलेल्या, वैफल्यग्रस्त हळव्या गुरुदत्तने झोपेच्या गोळ्या घेऊन स्वतःला संपविले आणि गीतावर आभाळ कोसळले. व्यक्तिगत आणि व्यावसायिक दोन्ही ठिकाणी आता ती अपयशी होती. सचिनदा गाण्याच्या तालमीच्या बाबतीत अतिशय व्यावसायिक होते. १९५७ ला "सितारोंसे आगे'च्या वेळेस लताबरोबर न जमल्याने त्यांनी खचलेल्या गीताऐवजी "आशा'ला पसंती दिली आणि १९५७ च्याच "नया दौर'च्या अभूतपूर्व यशानंतर आशा ओ.पी.च्या संगीताचा "अविभाज्य घटक' कधी बनली ते ओ.पी.लाही समजले नाही.

"साहिब बीवी और गुलाम'मधली "बहू'ची व्यक्तिरेखा साकारण्यापूर्वी मीनाकुमारीनं कधीही मद्याला स्पर्श केला नव्हता. "न जाओ सैंया छुडाके बैंया...' म्हणत गणिकेसारखं नवऱ्याला रिझवू पाहणारी, त्याचं प्रेम मिळवू पाहणारी भूमिका समरसून करणारी मीनाकुमारी त्यानंतर मदिरेपासून अलिप्त होऊ शकली नाही. गीताचे तसेच झाले... "न जाओ सैंया' म्हणताना मद्याच्या नशेत धुंद झाल्याचा भाव आवाजात आणणारी गीता नंतर त्याच्याच नशेत स्वतःला हरवून बसली.

त्या रात्री तिने ओ.पी.ला फोन केला.. "नय्यरसाब... आप तो हमें भूल ही गये.' अडखळत गीता बोलत होती. "तुझ्यासाठी मी काही गाणी केलीयेत'.. पलीकडून ओ.पी. म्हणत होता... तिने फोन ठेवला... पण ओ.पी.साठी गीता परत कधीच गाणार नव्हती.

"मेरा सुंदर सपना बीत गया...' ते "वक्तने किया क्‍या हॅंसी सितम...'पर्यंत एक वर्तुळ पूर्ण झालं होतं. "कैसे कोई जिये जहर है जिंदगी...' म्हणत २० जुलै १९७२ ला गीतानं कायमचा निरोप घेतला... "आपण गीताला विसरलो...' अशी खंत ओ.पी.च्या मनात कायमची ठेवून!

Any ways, a few comments about the article.
1) Just like many (or I would say most) of the articles on the internet, this article gives focus on the OP, SD and Guru Dutt connection more
2) The article has too many resemblances to the article written by Shirish Kanekar in his book "Yaadon ki baraat"
3) On the positive side, nice to see that Sakal has remembered Geeta ji
