It is one BIG MESS from Start to finish ninja.gif
nothing's right except Rajnikant....he can carry off anything even the most ridiculous roles and believe me this is one......apparently it is one of the biggest hits having been released in 34 countries.... may be more i am not sure....
To Date it is supposed to be the most expensive movie ever made in India and what a waste sad.gif

Cheeni Kum - 6.5/10

Only good for the comedy moments. AB is matchless, his egotistical moments too good. Paresh Rawal was superb as the girl's father. A flawed Gandhian, he played his part to the T. The conversation relating to the cricket matches was very good. Tabu was poised, as always. IMO the little girl was wasted (The only sore point in the film). She was made to mouth inane dialogues, absolutely inappropriate for her age). The plot was also far-fetched, considering Indian sensibilities. I'd say its a one-time watch (only for the one-liners).

HT Bhai...it is a DVD at home. Fifteen minutes is what i could tolerate and you know how easily we can slip away from the room.. laugh.gif What puts me off is the sleazy way it was portrayed...Subtlety has indeed died in films these days..sad.

10vidaniya was a wonderful movie. Truly enjoyed (and kept wiping the tears off).. a very heart warming and touching film. Vinay Pathak (actor and co-producer) deserves a big round of applause for coming up with such a path-breaking film. So what if the concept is derived from some Hollywood film.

Pal bhar ke liye koi hamein pyar kar le..
jhootha hi sahi...

Posted by: simplefable Jan 6 2009, 08:13 AM

Couldnt agree more Parag. smile.gif
It is so refreshing to see a film which can go beyond the usual boy chase girl...stories. Vinay did a fine job. I have no qualms about adoption from any language...as long as the work is good.
Saw Ghazini...with kids. It was kind of hyped movie..but Aamir did a fine job. You know? it is also an adaptation of "memento". some moments are poignant though.. smile.gif

Slumdog millionaire

Tried hard to like it...too dramatically violent. I prefer low key movies with details that catch your attention...or grand ones that are held together with some central idea... this one is for audiences who are not too familiar with hindi movies or on second thoughts...maybe with people who are too familiar with hindi movies.

Spoilers...
Come to think of it, it did some daringly obvious things with the train main bechadna and rescuing the distressed heroine from the kotha/don and got away with it... there was even a sacrificing brother angle... wow... biggrin.gif But it has some very disturbing childhood scenes... Boyle is the director of the cult hit, Trainspotting...

I am half way through watching "Sicko"

Posted by: mmuk2004 Feb 9 2009, 10:52 AM

Arre batao to kaisa laga?

Posted by: mmuk2004 Feb 9 2009, 11:15 AM

"No Country for old Men" ... a brilliantly gripping stark film. The action is taut and the characters and scenes very carefully etched with great detail as is typical of the Coen brothers. And in the middle of it all, is Tommy Lee Jones with his tired voice commenting on the action and reacting to it... he is quite brilliant in the movie. Though the movie is based on Mc Carthy's novel, the voice of Tommy Lee Jones reminded me of the Yeatsian lines "That is no country for old men/the young in one another's arms, birds in the trees..." Yeats as the old man feels distanced from the young and their celebration of life. In the movie Tommy Lee Jones, an old WWII vet, finds himself a misfit in the sheer annihilation of life erupting around him. The Coen brothers like these elaborate labyrinthine references in their movies, I would not be surprised if they intended the title to have the dual resonance. Don't know how the book has used it, makes me want to read the book.

Dil Kabaddi,

Heavens! Did not know it was a straight lift from Husbands and Wives... thought I had made one heck of a drastic discovery, only to find out that it a fairly well known fact... maybe they acknowledged it in the beginning or something and I missed it. Good actors, new kind of a film but Rahul Bose as Woody Allen? Come on! Irfan Khan was pretty good. Wasted effort though, a Woody Allen film, is just that, a Woody Allen film.

Posted by: behenji.turned.mod Feb 15 2009, 02:39 PM

dev d......loved it

billu barber.....liked it a lot...loved irrfan khanz characterization

Posted by: mmuk2004 Feb 16 2009, 10:35 PM

Saw Billu Barber. Another interesting comedy about a north Indian village after Sajjanpur. Sajjanpur was darker and had vignettes of the entire village, whereas this one is more focused on Billu and his family. Absolutely loved Irfan Khan in it. Some lovely scenes involving Billu and his family that you almost don't notice and yet not quite. I think this is the second movie of Lara Dutta that I have seen and for some reason her face sticks in my memory. Om Puri was good too as the local dada, did not ham it too much. He has been working in a lot of comedies lately, and not particularly good ones.

Buddha Mar Gaya: So bad that I sat and watched it right through. Quite raunchy, and vulgar, it declares itself as a black comedy, and literally lives up to it. If you have to see Om Puri hamming it, this is the one. Anupam Kher is pretty good as a dead corpse with the same smile on his face throughout the movie. Yet there is something in the movie that I cannot quite put my finger on, that holds you horrified to your seat. A cynicism about human nature pervades the movie without any redeeming features. While watching the film, found it quite bad, but the humor in the film(even the bawdy ones) strike you even more strongly when you think back upon them. Don't know if I can recommend it to people...I watch Rahul Rawail's films because he has made films like Love Story, Betaab, Arjun and Dacait. I have lost count of the number of bad films he has made ofc (Anjaam, heading the list) rolleyes.gif

A Wednesday : slick and interesting. Naseer adds quality to most films.

zooby dooby is fairly hummable. others could have been removed. its entertaining no doubt but its not great cinema. A masala movie at its core with some pravachan to share. But something artificial about it which was not so with the munna bhai series.

yes, the dialogues were a mix of well known jokes and some really witty one liners.

Posted by: hildebrand Feb 3 2010, 11:46 PM

Hottie and the Nottie -> 2.0/5.0

A time pass movie with an oft-repeated bollywood love theme - boy pursues girl (the beautiful hottie) and finally falls for her best friend (the ugly Nottie)!
Paris Hilton was supposed to be the main attraction of the movie but didn't do well due to various reasons.

Posted by: hildebrand Feb 5 2010, 11:24 PM

I just watched Paa. From the story point of view, it has a razor thin plot - what i call a theme based movie. The theme mixes progeria with modern relationships. Abhishek and Vidya's characters fall in love in college and Vidya gets pregnant. Abhishek is not ready wanting to become a politician like his father and Vidya gets out of the way. The kid born to them has progeria - a disease in which the person gets old extremely fast. The Kid Auro (played by Amitabh) grows up to be a 12 year old (whose body is 70+ due to the degenerative disease). And one day his paths cross with his father's. The rest of the story is as predictable as it gets. His parents get back together and he of course has to die because, well, he has this disease.
What goes for the movie is the witty dialogues and the scenes + presentation of it. A time pass movie which can be watched once.

The Bigamist (1953)

The tale of a how the main character became a bigamist!
A childless couple (Harry and Eve) applies for adoption of a child. The adoption agent is suspicious about the husband Harry. The investigation leads him to the truth of Harry's bigamy and thus begins a tale of discovery on how he became a bigamist.

Rating; 3.0/5.0

Not bad. Is a quick watch. Manages to keep engrossed inspite of the seemingly semi-cliched theme. Perhaps due to the lady director Ida Lupino (who also acts as the Other Woman Phyllis) managing to show her women's perspective of the goings on.
Also, inspite of being so old, it shows themes like working women giving preference to career among other things. A must watch for a cool weekend.

It is interesting to note that the screenwriter Collier Young was married to the actress Joan Fontaine (who plays Eve) at the time and his ex-wife was the "other woman" Phyllis (Ida Lupino herself). tongue1.gif

Ninotchka (1939)

Love story of a Russian Spy and a French Lawyer

Greta Garbo rocks in the movie. No wonder she got an oscar nomination for it. Pity it was her second last movie.

Would give it 3.0/5 just for her and 1930s Paris

Thanks Sharmila. Have got the movie. will watch sometime and get back.

I watched Quicksand(1950) today and found it engrossing.
It stars Mickey Rooney, Jeanne Cagney and Barbara Bates.

IPB Image

A very interesting story of how the hero becomes wanted starting from the need to have twenty bucks for a date. One things leads to another till one day he is running from the law ostensibly for muder. Nice watch.
