Attempting to start a thread on raaga-based songs from hindi films.
I have chosen the Raag-rang forum for two reasons - (1) raaga based songs would be most appropriate here. (2) Songs of various singers can be posted in one thread, without starting similar threads on different forums. The basic premise for uploading a song here is simple. Firstly, whoever uploads a song must mention the raag on which the song is based. And secondly, there must be a sufficient amount of 'pakad' of the raag identifiable in the song. I am starting with a Kishore Kumar classic. Payalwali dekhna... raag - Marubihag Film - Ek Raaz Year - 1963 Lyrics - Majrooh Music - Chitragupt bitrate - 320 kbps duration - 3:20 Self - belief is the most potent force.

The immortal 'kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya' by Lata and Rafi.
Film - Suvarna Sundari Year - 1955 lyrics - Bharat Vyas Music - Adi Narayan Rao bitrate - 128 duration - 6:26 This was a lovely exercise of using 4 different raagas in one song. The mukhda and the first antara are in raag sohni. The second antara in in Miya Malhar. The third is in raag Asavari and the last is in Yaman. Self - belief is the most potent force.

Just a small correction: Meri Saanson ko... I think is in Raag Puriya Dhanashree and not Puriya Kalyan. A science that does not deliver us to the portals of metaphysics is a failed science and a religion that does not embrace physics is not grounded in reality.

'Albela saajan aayo re' is a traditional bandish - I thought I would attach another version for whatever it is worth. Here is a small five minute portion of young Ustad Rashid Khan's considerably longer rendition of Ahir Bhairav where he ends with this bandish in drut teental. Another immortal melody 'Ketaki gulab joohi champak ban phoole' from Basant-Bahar. This is based on 2 different raagas that give the movie its name.
The first antara is in raag Basant, and the second antara is in raag Bahar. Singers - Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Manna Dey Film - Basant - Bahar Year - 1956 lyrics - Shailendra Music - Shankar - Jaikishan bitrate - 128 duration - 5:38 An interesting debate had begun after this song caught the people's fancy after it was released. In the movie, the first antara is sung by the court singer (or someone who wasn't the hero) and is rendered by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. After he sings his part, Bharat Bhushan comes and sings the second antara (rendered by Manna Dey) and wins (I think it is a contest - I do not recall the details). Fans debated hotly how Manna Dey could win over Panditji, who is rated as an all time great in Indian classical music. Self - belief is the most potent force.
