4th January has arises somewhere on mother earth ! This is a tribute by Varsha Bhosle in a Marathi magazine, Chanderi, just after the death of Panchamda. Translation is done by me and please correct me if I am wrong or did not convey the feelings ( It is simply impossible to replicate the mellifluous style of Varsha-ji, a big fan that I am of her writings ). Just reading the article gives us so much insights into the man...so many thoughts to ponder upon !!
May his soul rest in peace !

पहिले घाव घातले होते _____ ______ ने ( direct name of a music director was printed, but deleted by kcp, only to prevent any bad feelings reading this "tribute" )

माझ्या मनात पटकन काही गाणी येतायत ती वडील एस डी बर्मन यांचा सहायक म्हणून काम करताना तयार झालेली ( purposefully avoided more details on this subject - to avoid any bad breath about this article ) - पंचम अंकलना "हा विषय" नेहमीच नापसंत होता.

The same archaic seven notes. Centuries have past and they are still relevant. Those very seven notes, one has to weave and build a novel tune. While creating, only the tune flowing in a top quality musician's emotionally packed and heartily delicate manner, brings out a "style" in itself. It surely has a "stamp" of the style. Just looking at her, she points out a finger towards her master/creator and proudly says 'my name is STYLE and I belong only to him'. It was with Madan Mohan. Its with Naushad. Roshan, Salil, Sajjad, Jaidev, all old stalwarts captured her and nurtured her. But since the decade of the 60's other music directors started to seize her, to disrobe her. Are they music directors ? They are vultures. Biting the flesh out of other people's imagination and then selling it in the market at reduced rates. The great duo Shankar Jaikishan's death from the art and life, was not merely a death. It was a murder. Of their crushed hearts. Today on 4th Jan 1994, my step father, R D Burman died in a similar fashion. First strikes were made by _____ _____ ( direct name of a music director was printed, but deleted by kcp, only to prevent any bad feelings reading this "tribute" )

They say that experiences of death wipes all bitterness in the mind. Maybe one day I would forgive _____ ( same music director 's name ) too, but today it is not possible for me. My wound is fresh and bleeding. Its so strange. The very same behavior of keeping certain negative notions in mind for years, made me not speak with Pancham Uncle, for the last 3 years of his life. In the end it was me who made up. But that was only to make his wife and my mother, Asha Bhosle, happy, on the occasion of her 60th birthday. In fact my mother and he, had already patched up their differences, long time back. It was me, who was fighting for an empty fort. I realize that now, after it is too late. That was a private matter between a husband and a wife. I had no right to poke my nose in it. Sometimes the certain scenes from films come into real life , similarly certain problems like (film) "Abhimaan" must have raised in their marriage. But again I had no right to be in between that. My reaction was more of an over-possessive and an over-protective daughter. I don't remember exactly when and for what reason, I broke relations with him. I would now repent for this, and carry it with me for whole of my life.

When I was five, I declared to everybody , "If at all I marry, I would marry Baal Uncle ( Pt Hridaynath Mangeshkar )". Obviously this madness came off my mind lateron. There-afterwards after about 7-8 years , the moment I heard the song "Maar daalega dard jigar" from (the film) "Pati Patni" , I already told myself that if I marry, I would marry this music director, R D Burman, only. If there was an Asha-RD recording, Varsha was always on tow. I forgot everything and heard their music. Later , with age, I gained a bit more maturity. Got to mingle with people of my age. But how can I forget that first madness of that tender age? Mother and Pancham Uncle were fully aware of my craze towards music. Both of them handled me with great care and right balance. Just like the strings entangled in the notes. There were no shrieks, tribulations or affliction. They took care not to wake up the competitive behavior within me, which had died down over a period of time. So much so that I must be the first and the only person to accept their marriage , years later. Their bond must have made in heaven. Tried and tested adjectives would be enough for defining this bond - He was the tune and she was its notes. The meeting between art and mind had no entry for others. Today at the funeral, one lady said "I thought that they were separated. Is Asha taai really so much sorrowful ?" I heard that. But I had already lost the moral right to answer her back. I would now repent for this, and have to bear its weight for whole of my life.

Wherever I am there, competition has to be in some form or the other, in some field or the other. I was quite confident that I was the one to discover R D Burman. I had bought his 78 (rpm) records of films like "Chhote Nawab", "Bhoot Bungla" and "Pati Patni". Played them till the groves worn out. This initial part of his musical career seemed ordinary, for some people. Even before people were awake to this music of his, I was already somersaulting with it. "Teesri Manzil" had not yet released, so how could he not be mine ! Pancham uncle knows, really did he know, that I was his biggest fan. If he did not remember some song from his super flop movie, he used to ask me, "Varshu, wah Aruna Irani jusmen thi, usmen vo Bindu ne kiya hua mujra kaunsa tha?" I used to immediately reply, "Raaja banaa mor chhaila" and beam a bit more with happiness. The time RD mixed a romantic Latin-beat like Bosanova in Hindi music, I was a blossoming into a young girl. For the entire generation of mine, RD's music meant youth, freedom and excitement. But I never let him know these feelings of mine. I would now repent for this, and carry the burden for whole of my life.

The quarrels that I had with mother, most of the time Pancham was related to them. On certain actions of mother, even though they were quite normal for a woman to perform, we used to laugh suddenly, or without speaking with each other and without any dime or reason, laugh boisterously. Mother would never understand why we were doing so. She always thought that we were making fun of her. But often it was so. The way an excellent cartoonist could draw a caricature out of a beautiful person's face, Pancham Uncle was gifted with a similar "sense of the absurd". In his own words, he had "this tuning" with all his friends. This tuning of mine and his was also great. I used to say, I have achieved that , then its enough - I am his real daughter. But blood relatives take a lot from us authoritatively. We too unwillingly compromise , with our old habits. But I did not make this adjustment ever, for Pancham Uncle. Its not a repenting, but this baggage I have to pull along all my life.

Nowadays there are lots of articles on him, accusing him of stealing western tunes. He too did not deny certain accusations. Even I do not want to push it away. Yes, he lifted certain tunes. But those few tunes are not the full R. D. People who have knowledge about music, RD is a different man for them. My Pancham Uncle is "O Mere Dil Ke Chain" (Mere Jeevan Sathi) and "Sharaabi, Mera Naam Ho Gaya" (Chandan Ka Palna), and "Ye Shaam Mastani" (Kati Patang) and "Teri Meri Yari Badi Purani" (Charitraheen) and "Dilbar Dil Se Pyare" (Caarvaan) abd "Pyaar Ke Moad Pe Chhodege Na Bahen" (Parinda) - songs like these that he composed. First and last praise that I uttered in front of him, was quite some time after "Bhoot Bungla". That time I used to consider "Aao Twist Karen" as an excellent composition and used to like a lot. I did not understand his looks in my eyes that time, but he said, "Varshu! you are a kid now". I felt discomposed. How much was I ? 14 or 15. But much later, when it dawned upon me, I never accepted my mistake of praising that song. I would now repent for this, and carry it with me for whole of my life.

When one is writing a book on the best songs of R.D, did you know that there would be so many songs that would not appear in that book? I remember quickly some songs that he made as an assistant to his father, S D Burman ( purposefully avoided more details on this subject by kcp - only to prevent any bad feelings reading this "tribute" ). Pancham Uncle always hated to bring out this subject. Whenever I wanted to irritate him, this subject was handy. Here I want to categorically mention that I do not want to put down S D Burman. But when people say that this great music director gave pure Indian music, then would not RD be automatically involved in this pure creation ? I know that to reveal this secret publicly is not morally right, but who is there to be irritated or angry, "now" ? O Critics...who know only to blame - first learn to love "music", from the bottom of your hearts. Then gather the style of a certain music director and let it percolate deep within, so that you can tell that so and so song is made by that music director, without need of any kind of proofs.

I met RD the first time, knowing him as Pancham Uncle and he remained the same for me right till the end. I remember one incident which happened during a show at Muscat. I was having a chat with Shailendra Singh and one man poked his nose in between the conversation and started asking me about my "daddy". He wanted to ask about my my father, my daddy, how he was. The manner in which he asked and his pronunciations, Shailu and me started laughing aloud. Pancham Uncle heard that. We told him what happened. His face suddenly fell and became sad. Immediately I realized that he was hurt when we laughed at somebody calling RD her daddy. I was feeling shy and so I did not clear that misunderstanding. "Bhosle" was his only family, and already knowing that , I would now repent for this, and carry the burden for whole of my life.

I am proud that I am a cold blooded person. I did not cry when I got the news of his death. I did not cry even when I entered that familiar music room, which was always drowned with laughter. I did not cry even after seeing his lifeless body. Everybody else's floodgates opened, but I was dry. The funeral procession started. While crying my mother said "He is going. Now who will sing "Monica...O my darling for me ?" That time I realized that I would not be able to listen to his voice ever after this moment. Not in shows or events. Not on phone. Now there would be no more waiting for his new song releases. And that time I started crying. One part of me died that very moment. The person I loved, with him I got angry, with whom I laughed, whom I chided with at times, whom I considered as my idol, whom I brushed off at times, whom I respected - and all these I did at the same time, with utmost passion - he was the only man for whom I did all this.

He was a prince of Tripura by birth, but a Czar of music by deeds. Now, after his death, colums would be spoken-written as to how great he was. Those who pushed him away with cruelty, those producers, directors and listeners too will sing praises of him. Ordinary people like me who broke him down, would also write a lot about him. But nobody will write how he was alone, sad and ostracized in his last few years of his life. They gave him the loneliness, nobody would want to write about that. "Anyways bygones are bygones. Now why publicly repeat the same things?" these would be standard sentences. I say that such people must be punished. When and who decided that R. D. is no more a genuine coin ? Why did we brush away this original composer and accepted his second class clones' music ? Today I am crying. You are also sad that the film industry has been deprived of a great talent. There is a big headline in the newspaper about his death. He was alive and he needed us, where were we then ? No work at hand, no hit for a long time ? What is the answer to this ? We have given so many shocks to his mind and that we are the ones who have brought him this heart attack. We all will have to repent this for the whole of our lives !
