It is also a most fav song of Lata Ji tongue.gif well. I think it is a tedious and arduous task to select only a single song from a lot of her enchanting melodies.

Do accept my congratulations for starting this beautiful thread.

I too am one of those, who are completely mesmerised by Diya Jalakar Aap Bujhaya and consider this one to be among the few very very best of Noorjenhan's songs. I know it would be a herculean effort but perhaps one way to extend this thread and effort could be list all the songs in a particular year and then invite a discussion on the nomination for five best of the year, followed by the choice of best of the year, a la Oscar style.

Believe me even then, it would be difficult to nominate 5 and then to finally select one, from 1944 onwards in particular. She was such a magnificient singer.

Pradeep!
I think it’s a wonderful idea and when I was starting the thread I wanted to do this, but there is only one problem, I do not have the complete record of her songs. sad.gif I have been compiled the complete list of her songs from 1939 to 1959. From 1960 to 19969, I have the record of 70% songs and from 1970 to 1999, I have the record of only 50% songs.

Lets wait for the comments of other members, If they agree with your idea, I will do that. tongue.gif

Dear Inaam

A friend from Mumbai has requested me to send a completete filmography of Noorjehan's Pakistani movies, as an actress - singer and then as a playback singer. I happen to go through this thread today and noted the above exchange of emails. It is a pity that our professional life leaves little time to pursue our passion and my desire to partcipate in a contest to select best of Noorjehan year-wise remained unfulfilled. The above exchange also brought back memories of Priya, who was so passionate about Noorjehan songs. In recent times a number of friends have joined HF who seem to be passionate about the music of 1940s and 1950s. Perhaps some of us could get together to revive this thread.

Meanwhile I wonder, if you can provide me a year-wise filmography of Noorjehan's Pakistani movies as an actress - singer and as a playback singer. Am I right in assuming that Ghunghat (1962) was her last movie as a leading lady (or was it Chingari in 1964) and thereafter she pursued her career as playback singer? Please enlighten me.

Thanks

Pradeep

Yes Aditya is right, Noor Jehan last film as a leading lady was Ghalib (1961). Although she did make a guest appearance (along with other Pakistani stars of that era including Sabiha, Tarana etc) on the request of the film director/producer S. Suleman in Baji (1963). That song is available on youtube and you can see Noor Jehan sitting in a wedding scene and enjoying her own song (a duet by her and Farida Khanum)

Thanks

Pradeep

Pradeep, to the best of my knowledge NJ's last film as a leading lady was Ghalib (1961). She did not act in Ghunghat or Chingari.

Aditya

Yes Aditya is right, Noor Jehan last film as a leading lady was Ghalib (1961). Although she did make a guest appearance (along with other Pakistani stars of that era including Sabiha, Tarana etc) on the request of the film director/producer S. Suleman in Baji (1963). That song is available on youtube and you can see Noor Jehan sitting in a wedding scene and enjoying her own song (a duet by her and Farida Khanum)

Dhall, your list is not correct. There were other "Noor Jehan's" working at that time and that muddles Noor Jehan filmography. Noor Jehan didn't act in Red Signal, Umeed, Susral, Chandni, Dheeraj, Faryad, Maharana Pratab, Jadoogar, Sofia, Mirabai, and Abida.

Ok Dhall,

Now read my post carefully. I will never claim like you that I am 100% correct and even if I make such claims and proven wrong, I will admit my mistake.

Now let us start with the movies you "claim" singer actress Noor Jehan appeared in.

Abida (1947) - was produced by Hind Pictures by husband-wife team of SwaranLata-Nazir. It was directed by Nazir and cast included Swaranlata, Kumar, Majid, Noorjahan, and Nazima. Swaranlata was the leading lady of this film. Noor Jehan in this film was some character actress. Abida and Wamaq Azra (1946) were one of the last films by Nazir-Swaranlata team before they migrated to Pakistan. The music of both films was provided by A.R. Qureshi and in Wamaq Azra, Uma Devi (Tun Tun) sang the songs.

Meera Bai (1947) - was produced by Shalimar Pictures established by W.Z. Ahmed. W.Z. Ahmed's wife Neena (also known as 'mysterious Neena') was the heroine of this film. W.Z. Ahmed and his wife Neena also migrated to Pakistan, and produced/directed only 2 films there ... Wadaah and Roohi. Detailed Sketch of Neena is provided by Saadat Hasan Manto in his book 'Stars from Another Sky'. The cast of this film includes Nirmal Kumar, Neena, Shyama, M. Parvez, Noorjahan, Neelam Kothari, Bazid Khan, Tiwari. The Noor Jehan in this film is character actress "Noor Jehan".

Chandni (1942) was produced by Ranjit Film Company. In most of their films they used to cast Khursheed Begum as the leading lady. The cast of this film includes Khurshid, Dixit, Kamla, Noorjahan, Kantilal, Rajkumari, Tarabai, Ishwarlal, Rama Shukal. The Noor Jehan in this film is the character actress "Noor Jehan".

Actually if you have hindi film directory, the name "Noor Jehan" appears as early as 1931 in silent film Hind Ke Tare with cast including Noor Jehan and Malti Devi and continues all the way upto 1969's Anjaan Hai Koi starring :- Aroona Irani, Helen, Tiwari, Feroz Khan, Nalini, Mohan Choti, Jayshree T., Noorjahan.

Even a casual Noor Jehan fan knows that Noor Jehan - the singer actress started her career in 1935 in Punjabi Film Pind Ki Kuri made in Calcutta. And after she migrated to Pakistan... the name "Noor Jehan" appearing in credits after 1947 in hindi films must be some other Noor Jehan. There were quite a few "Noor Jehan's" working in hindi films as the name is very common.

There is another singer Noor Jehan too who sang for Madan Mohan in Heer Ranjha (1970). By 1947, Noor Jehan was a BIG STAR, do you really think she will play character roles in films like Abidah and Meera Bai etc opposite leading ladies like Neena and Swaranlata?

Therefore, I rest my case.

I am back!
Ummer, you are correct. I agree with your statement and appreciate your hard work. I hope Dhal Sahib ki ghalat fehmi door ho gai hogi.

Hello Dhall Sahib,

I know you since the days of SKS yahoo groups. It is almost 8 years now. As far as I remember or have known you, you haven't made any contribution to any forums from your OWN collection. All you do is either cut and paste from different websites and/or what other members upload, you download that stuff and then upload it in some other thread.

I remember many incidents like this. On RMIM groups you posted an article on Swaranlata which was written by me and copied it from website. Also there was another incident on RMIM, where you copied something from my website and kept on saying you have newspaper cutting of it and some esteemed member of RMIM proved it that you were lying. Also, Mahesh posted some Shamshad songs and you downloaded them and posted it in some other thread the SAME day without giving credit to the original contributor. I don't know why you do this but it makes you less trustworthy in other people eyes and people don't trust you anymore.

Anyways, coming back to the original topic. If your Mamu is that old, it might be possible that memories are playing hide and seek with him. Your only proof that Noor Jehan starred in those movies is that your Mamu said so... right?

I am willing to bet $100 infront of all members if you prove it to me that Noor Jehan (the actress-singer) starred in Abidah and Meera Bai. Long time ago, a rare interview was published in some newspaper in which W.Z. Ahmed discussed his films in detail and he said, the favorite film of his career was Meera Bai. There was NO Noor Jehan in that film.

If you think Noor Jehan starred in those films, show me a reasonable proof? Film Print, Picture or some article?

Thanks,

Ummer.

This further proves my point that you go to unknown/personal sites like geocities and cut and paste information from there. People like you + the people who create sites like those (without doing proper research) further complicates these matters. Anyone can write anything on the internet or on wikipedia, that is not a proof that Noor Jehan indeed acted in those films. As I said before, the name Noor Jehan appears as early as silent films and continues till 1968 in Hindi Films, thats is why it complicates her filmography.

If Noor Jehan indeed acted in Meera Bai and Abidah as you and your Mama claims... she must have sung songs in those films too.. Can you post the details of her songs from these films or upload songs? I need convincing proof that Noor Jehan indeed acted in those films. It will be a great news for all Noor Jehan fans... and there exists many more Noor Jehan songs.. Your only proof uptil now is your Mama and some personal websites... Then u bring in M.M. Billo Mehra... I have corresponded with his son, all he said was that his father might have directed some Pakistani films before migrating to India and he doesnt remember which ones, so he needed help with his father filmography in Pakistan. There was no dicussion of Abidah and Meera Bai...

I think it is against this board policy to search and dig previous posts for fighting purposes. But if you want I can go to RMIM and dig those posts.

We don't need a proof for something which is a well known fact. Meera Bai Abidah etc came in 1946, 1947 period and Noor Jehan didnt act in those movies.

Anywayz, to each its own. You stick to your own opinion and I will stick to mine. I dont want to argue with you anymore.
