Sri Lanka v/s Bermuda

The 4th ODI in the ICC world cup set another benchmark in the world cup history with Sri Lanka winning over Bermuda for 243 runs. They scored a devastating 321 from 6 wickets. Bermuda could not resist the mighty bowling from the experienced Sri Lankan team, and had to give up in the 25th over scoring just 78, one of the lowest scores in a world cup tournament.

Sri Lanka's Jayawardene was selected as the Man of the Match. The batting skills of Sri Lankan captain was a significant contribution towards the perfect win of the Sri Lankans in their first match of the 2007 world cup. Jayawardene scored the highest in the match, 85 runs off 90 balls, with six 4's and two 6's.

It was the tri-geared performance of the three batsmen of the Sri Lankan team that brought the run shower in the fields of Queen's Park Oval at Trinidad. The three half centuries that surged from the bats of the trio, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, and Silva gave the full momentum to the Sri Lankan innings; together they contributed 216 runs off 218 balls. Silva was in full form, he managed to remain not out, and maintained a strategic batting performance, owing to which he scored an amazing 55 runs off 45 balls.

Bermuda 's Mukuddem got the credit for the fall of the first wicket of Sri Lanka , an important wicket of Jayasuriya in the 9th over when Pitcher had a wonderful catch of his ball. It was a celebration time for Bermuda. Though the second wicket of Tharanga fell at the 12th over, the Sri Lankan team did not give up their spirit. Bermuda's Hurdle and Mukuddem proved that they could face the greatest challenges in the field by grabbing two wickets each of the Sri Lankans.

The innings of Bermuda started with the batting of Smith and Pitcher. Having to achieve a difficult target of 322, the Bermuda team was found nervous in their debut world cup match. The wickets started falling in the beginning of the first over itself. Smith and Mukuddem got out without contributing anything towards the team, and when the third wicket of Hemp was caught by Jayawardhene after the bowling from Malinga, the Bermudan had scored just 20 runs. It was a pitiful performance by the team captain Romaine when he got out by lbw at the very beginning of his batting, contributing nil runs in his historical match.

The highest score from the Bermuda was from LOB Cann. He had scored 28 runs by the time he was caught by Sangakkara at the 24th over, after a strong bowling from Maharoof. The match ended with the last wicket of Leverock in the 25 th over.

It was a day for the Sri Lankan bowler Maharoof too. With his powerful bowling he got on the nerves of the Bermudan, by grabbing four important wickets. Mallinga and Muralitharan showed their bowling skills by contributing for the fall of three and two wickets respectively.

Sri Lanka is looking forward towards their next match against Bangladesh on 21st March.

Ireland v/s Zimbabwe

The 5th ODI in the ICC world cup 2007 witnessed the neck-and-neck performance by the two teams, Ireland and Zimbabwe, resulting in a tie. An extraordinary match with super performance by both the teams resulted in a run score of 221 for each team at the end of 50 overs. In the world cup history, this is the third such match that ended in a tie. The last two world cups witnessed such ties, one in 1999 when Australia played the semi final match against South Africa and another in 2003 when Africa played the pool match against Sri Lanka in Durban .

The Player of the 5th match of the world cup 2007 was Ireland's Jeremy Bray who scored 115 runs, the highest in this world cup series so far. He managed to stay till the end of the match. The amazing ten 4's and two 6's that poured from his bats gave the audience an enchanting cricket experience of a complete innings from a single batsman. The other eight wickets including that of captain Johnston did not contribute significantly towards the score. Johnston had scored only 20 runs by the time he got run out in the 44 th over.

It was a wonder that Ireland managed to end the match in a tie. The exhilarating match performance by the Zimbabweans was sufficient enough to beat the 222 mark very easily. They were managing a reasonable score till the 44 th over, till the fall of the wicket of Taylor. It was then the Zimbabweans lost their pace, and lost the important wickets one by one. The team had scored 203 scores at the fall of Taylor . After that they could add only 18 runs from the last six overs. The match ended exactly at the 50th over with all out for 221.

Zimbabwe team presented a composed batting in their first ODI in the ICC world cup 2007. There were decent deliveries from the six batsmen that contributed towards their score. However, captain Utseya had an appalling return when he was bowled out by O'Brien at the 49 th over. He could score just one run in his debut world cup match as captain.

It was difficult for the Zimbabwe to maintain their composure when the bowlers struck one after another. Ireland's McCallan and O'Brien contributed significantly in their bowling against Zimbabwe. Sibanda's important wicket was bowled by White, which resulted him hit the wicket and get out of the match.

Utseya was found a bit depressed over the team's bowling performance too. After the match he poured out his feelings saying that the team had better improved their bowling especially in front of Bray, who got a lot of opportunities from the Zimbabwean bowlers. Mpofu, Chigumbura, and Brent got two wickets each, Rainsford and Williams managed one wicket each.

Both teams gained one point each. The next match for Zimbabwe is against the host West Indies on 19th March and while Ireland will meet Pakistan on 17th March.
