Hi
The lyricist with two last names 'Verma' and 'Malik' for so many decades was 'the lyricist' for Punjabi movies. With the decline of Punjabi movie production in the 1950's he wrote lyrics for some Hindi feature films too. In the eyes of Punjabi movie fans he will be remembered as the person whose songs 'mere pyar di duniya nu' 'Dupatta patla gandhe di chhil warga' and too many others , far too many to mention, were a mainstay of Punjabi Films. sangeet ka safar very sad news, 1996 I meet at New Delhi. he was God gift geetkaar

here is Noted Bollywood Lyricist Verma Malik passes away

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VARMA MALIK

Bollywood loses lyricist Verma Malik of popular songs of the 1970s & 1980s. He passed away peacefully on Sunday evening at his residence in Juhu.

Siddharth Tiwari, a close family friend said that lyricist Verma Malikji had written the lyrics for many popular songs in the 1970s and the 1980s, was born on April 13, 1925 in Ferozepur, Pakistan.

He had penned Aaj meri Yaar ki Shaadi Hai, which is still popular and a marriage anthem today, besides Yashoda Na Nandla. He has also penned Hai hai yeh majboori from ROTI KAPDA AUR MAKAAN (1974), Do bechaare from VICTORIA NO. 203 (1972), Tere sang pyaar mein from NAGIN (1976), Ek taara bole from YAADAGAR (1970), Kaan mein jhumka chaal mein thumka from SAAWAN BHADON (1970) that were classics & immensely likable and popular.

He had also received two Filmfare awards for PEHCHAN and BE-IMAAN

He adds that Malikji first began writing by penning bhajans. He was also an active freedom fighter and wrote many patriotic songs. After partition, Malikji moved to India and began writing songs for Punjabi films. Actor Director Manoj Kumar gave him the first break when he wrote Ek Tara Bole for YAADGAR, which was a great hit and had Bollywood noticing him. And since then there was no looking back as he went on creating some of the most memorable classics that fans even hum today.

His close friend music director Pyarelal of the Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo reminisces that he was sorry to hear about Malikji passing away. He was a simple man, a calm person, happy and proud of his work he had done. He was unique in a way that he could blend shayari and folk songs very well. Bollywood is very grateful for his contribution to Indian cinema.

A blunder made by The Hindu carried on here:
....... was born on April 13, 1925 in Ferozepur, Pakistan.

There was no Pakistan in 1925 and Ferozepur was never
part of it.

Verma Malik began writing songs for films in the ‘40s but had to wait for 1969 and Kalyanji-Anandji’s Yadgaar to break through commercially, followed by Sawan Bhadon and Pehchan in 1970. For the next decade and more, Malik was one of the busiest lyricists and also wrote songs in the 1990s for the occasional film. He has been indisposed for years.
Peak form:
Beimaan and Victoria No. 203 (1972), Dharma (1973), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Nagin (1976), Jaani Dushmun (1979)
Claim to immortality:
Ek tara bole/Yadgaar
Do bechare/Victoria No. 203
Raaz ki baat/Dharma
Haaye haaye yeh
majboori/Roti Kapada Aur Makaan/
Hum bolega to bologe/Kasauti
Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai/

He wrote innumerable punjabi hit songs. First prominent work was in Koday Shah.

Aaye Bhi Akela Jaiye Bhi Akela
Do Din Ki Zindagi Hai, Do Din Ka Mela
Do Din Ka Mela -- (2)

Teri Zindagi Modh Hein Do Ghadi Ki
Ye Baatein Nadan Hai Sab Jeete Jee Ki
Sab Jeete Jee Ki
Ye Duniya Huwi Hai Na Hogi Kisi Ki
Wahi Ek Manzil Hai Har Aadmi Ki
Har Aadmi Ki
Jahan Sab Ko Jana Padega Akela,
Do Din Ki Zindagi Hai Do Din Ka Mela
Do Din Ka Mela

Aaye Bhi Akela Jaiye Bhi Akela
Do Din Ki Zindagi Hai, Do Din Ka Mela
Do Din Ka Mela

Ek Baar Saath Deke Saath Na Todhna
Jaan Jaiye To Jaiye Dosti Na Todhna
Dosti Na Todhna
Nazren Na Pherne Na Munn Ko Na Modna
Duniya Ko Chhod Dena, Yaar Ko Na Chhod Na
Yaar Ko Na Chhod Na
Dekho Mansoor Kaise Jaan Se Khela
Do Din Ki Zindagi Hai, Do Din Ka Mela
Do Din Ka Mela

Aaye Bhi Akela Jaiye Bhi Akela
Do Din Ki Zindagi Hai, Do Din Ka Mela
Do Din Ka Mela

One of his song lyric contains the word "Sex" and Tax".
Probably the only song in HFM to contain those words.

Thanks for info Mahesh. His name is mostly identified
with MD pair Sonik Omi. he had to wait too long after he got
a tune from Hansraj Behl for aaye bhi akela-dost.

I had once heard a program on radio ( Ameen sayani?) where it was told that Malik was not his real surname. Its verma. He added Malik for his muslim friend whom he lost due to partition! so you have Verma malik ! ( though I had heard it long ago.......not sure 100%)

Very sad to note that Varma Malik passed away.

The above song for the movie DOST(1954) is a clear testimony that he was a good lyricisist but sad to note that he did not have goodluck in HFM to get an ealry success until late 60's and 70's.

Please not that punjabi version of this song is from Luchhi (1949) and is
written by Nazim Panipati. But it doesn't take anything away from Verma Malik.
