She was the only topmost in the years 1947-49, then she was top among two (I think she was the top still then!!) and then reduced to a stage singer. People who saw her then told me that she used to be quite drunk doing functions in calcutta along with Hemant Kumar etc. etc. Only if she had the time and opportunity like her peers!!! Bappa |

Bappa hi bappa, geeta ruled till her first priority was singing.from 47-49 she was the top singer along with shamshad begum.from 50-53 also she was a close second to lataji;but after marriage her priority shifted from music to family and the decline started.asha who started a year after geetaji became the second choice after lataji from 1953 onwards for most music directors because of geetaji's non-availability and by 1957 with the sucess of naya daur she had replaced geetaji in most camps. even geetaji was contemplating retirement after her marriage as an article on net suggests. it is to the credit of lataji and ashaji that music always remained the first priority for them . regards, mahesh |

hi mahesh ji
i also completely agree with you.MD'S like sd burman shifted to asha due to non availability of geeta ji.SD Burman needed recording after good no pf rehersels and geeta ji was not availble to attend them also it is mentioned also that guru dutt restrained her from doing works out of her productions.that was reason for thier dispute too regards ashish MERI NEENDON MEIN TUM

Hi In an old interview of Playback singer Kavita Krishnamurty she answers Q: Which was the first jingle you sang? Can you remember? It was for Amul Spray. Yes, I remember that day very well. Because the Bengali version was being sung by Geeta Dutt. I was so thrilled to meet her that It down and touched her feet. It was Guru Dutts youngest brother who was producing the jingles. CAN ANYONE GUESS WHICH YEAR SHE IS TALKING ? the whole interview can be accessed at http://www.studio-systems.com/Playback&Fas...r/15DEC1987.htm Warm regards Ashish MERI NEENDON MEIN TUM

thanks ashishji for the link.
geetaji sang the hindi and bengali versions and kavita sang the tamil version for the amulspray ad. the producer must be devi dutt -guru dutt's youngest brother. i am shocked by kavita's statement that rafi sahab wasn't classically trained like lata and ashaji.although even i prefer songs sung by female singers,i disagree with her that lata's and asha's output is better than rafisahab's and kishoreda's. regards, mahesh |

Thanks Maheshji for the info
Yes It is wrong to say that kishoreda and rafi saab does not have classical training.I think from free lance style she guessed this.Rafi's classical from baiju bawra was much more popular and good than his contempariries. regarding ad jingle It was recorded in 1971. what a tragic moment for geetaji, one amateur singer was trying to establish her career and one great renowned singer was at the verge of end of her career. destiny is never fruitful for everyone this aptly suits for geetadutt and rajkumari warm regards ashish MERI NEENDON MEIN TUM

I have never read till now that Geeta ji was thinking of taking retirement from singing after the marriage. Could you please provided a link to this article you were referring to ? I know its a very old post, but thought of checking with you on this. Thanks Parag This post has been edited by parag_sankla: Oct 17 2008, 10:47 PM Please visit www.geetadutt.com

parag,
it was somewhere in 1957;when geetaji chose her ten favourite songs.the article seemed to suggest that she has almost retired and was happy looking after kids. regards, mahesh |
