SF

Tracy-Hepburn will always remain the greatest screen pairing ever. No female actor has won or been nominated for as many Oscars as Hepburn and Tracy was the first male to win 2 Best Actor Oscars. Only Jack Nicholson has bested him.

Their off-screen chemistry was the subject of a superb biography by a former friend and collaborator, Garson Kanin (he wrote several screenplays including Adam's Rib and Woman of the Year). Their off-screen romance is actually a great tragedy. Spencer Tracy had a deaf son and that was the only reason he never got divorced to marry Hepburn.

What's next???

Kind Regards

Umm....only 80% sure...but he looks a lot like Howard Keel - one of the finest musical stars of the golden era. I loved his performance in Kiss Me Kate and the Cole Porter songs from that film were beautiful. He had a wonderful deep voice and tongue in cheek humour (in the roles he portrayed).....

They call me Mr.Tibbs!!!

When Denzel Washington received his Best Actor oscar for Training Day, he gave a beautiful speech. Poitier won a Lifetime Achievement award the same year. Denzel paid tribute to Poitier by saying that I spend my whole life trying to achieve his record and what do you go and do, you give him another oscar! There's nothing I want more than to follow in his footsteps. Poitier stood up and blew Denzel a kiss for this gesture....

Gene Wilder. His breakthrough film would be The Producers (1969) with him and Zero Mostel (the original Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof). Mostel delivers one of the classic insults of cinema history to Wilder - "You fish-faced enemy of the people".

We seem to have reached a stalemate so let me introduce him.

The top photo was indeed a Shakespearan portrayal (of Hamlet from 1922). The actor - John Barrymore - was arguably the finest actor and certainly the greatest romantic lead of the 1920s and early 30s. He was also extraordinarily handsome and was labelled "The Profile". In any case, I'm tremendously impressed by him based on the handful of films I've seen.

Acting was actually in his blood and both his brother and sister Lionel and Ethel were famous character actors. I'm sure you've seen films in which they appeared.

Unfortunately Barrymore's downfall came about due to his love of drink. This genetic curse was inherited by both his son and daughter, as described in the daughter's book Too Much, Too Soon. His granddaughter, Drew Barrymore, too suffered drug and alcoholism problems at a young age.

Too Much, Too Soon was made into quite a good film with Barrymore portrayed by close real-life friend and admirer Errol Flynn. When Barrymore died, all his friends including Flynn attended the funeral. After the mourners dispersed, some common Barrymore-Flynn drinking buddies pulled a stunt that is part of Hollywood legend. One of them delayed Flynn going home while the others dug up Barrymore's body and took his corpse to Flynn's place. When Flynn came home, he turned on the lights of his living room and saw his recently departed friend sitting on the sofa with a drink in his hand. He nearly suffered a heart attack!

Posted by: simplefable May 23 2009, 11:32 AM

Faraaj...it is a pleasure to read your comments / remarks. smile.gif
I did hear about John Barrymore..but havent seen any of his films..am afraid. I never know that Drew is his grand daughter..yes, as you said, many of the stars went out like shooting stars..due to addictions. btw..the episode of Erol Flynn is absolutely terrifying.. laugh.gif

Laughton directed only one film, The Night of the Hunter(1955), starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and the great Lillian Gish. It is considered a masterpiece.

Edward Fox is a recognisable character actor from the 70s-80s. Most indians would recognise him from Gandhi and perhaps as M in the best Bond film - Never Say Never Again.

May I recommend an extraordinary film he had a small role in: The Duellists (1977). This is director Ridley Scott's first feature-length film, made on a shoe-string budget and far better than the mega-budget films he now makes. A fascinating period piece, beautifully shot in crumbling castles all over Europe, this is as atmospheric as Scott's more acclaimed Blade Runner and Alien (both classics by the way). The effort of tracking down this lost classic is well worth it!

Posted by: Faraaj73 May 24 2009, 04:43 AM

This actress - one of my favourites - is not going to be easy to identify! So, a few hints are probably necessary:

1- She has worked in english language and european language films.
2- Married to a very famous director (her 2nd marriage).
3- Star of perhaps the finest film on the subject of religion - she played the title character.

She's one of my 4-5 favourite actresses so good to see someone else recognise her. Her performance in Babette's Feast was brilliant. She was also great in her husband's film Le Boucher. Definitely watch it if you can.....I don't like Bunuel (except Los Olvidados)...

SF

If you come to Australia, I can show The Duellists to you in an excellent print! And cook you a nice meal too laugh.gif

To be honest, I didn't like Day of the Jackal because I felt it fell too far short of the book. There are some films and directors e.g. Lubitsch, that are widely admired but I just never warmed to them....but Day of the Jackal is considered a classic as obviously are Lubitsch films.

I love Hollywood musicals, and of course Gene Kelly (this pic must be circa 45-47) was one of the greats with classics like Anchors Aweigh, An American in Paris and Singin in the Rain (Good mornin' was a classic song!). But I liked one of his few non-singing performances - Inherit the Wind. He had to rub elbows with double oscar winners Spencer Tracy and Frederic March in a court-room classic about the Scopes trial (aka monkey trial). Tracy and March played real life legendary lawyers Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryant, while Gene was an ultra-cynical journalist. Another really special film....there are so many!!!!!!!!

Ah! Mine too! But then I have so many favorites biggrin.gif Fred Mac Murray, who was habitually cast as the "good guy" gave a great performance as the morally ambiguous Walter Neff, the insurance agent, who is talked into an insurance fraud scheme that involves a murder, in this all time great noir, Double Indemnity. Wilder gave him another great role in The Apartment, sixteen years later, again a negative one, and Mac Murray once again shone in that role. Pity he did not often get meaty roles such as these.

p.s. Don't miss B Stanwyck in that blonde wig tongue1.gif

tongue1.gif I love your clues too...despite the fact that I am terrible at remembering faces...these wonderful details trigger off instant recognition. The fat man... Sydney Greenstreet, in the classic The Maltese Falcon A pretty sensational debut at the age of 61. Despite acting in very few movies (Warner Brothers) he is well recognized for his villanous roles and his pairing with Peter Lorre in nine films. He gave another memorable villainous performance as the club owner in Casablanca where he teamed up again with Lorre and Bogart. It was Huston's debut film too and some call it the first noir... indeed the stuff dreams are made of. What a film!

Faraaj,
I am sorry about the mist and the raindrops...I thought I was providing a visual clue to the film... tongue1.gif Indeed it is Umbrellas of Cherbourg featuring a young and ethereal Catherine Deneuve. She decided to take up acting seriously after this film.

SF, yes that is a much more mature Deneuve, what a marvelous career she has had! She was excellent in Repulsion when she was pretty young, and then it was marvelous to see her later in Belle de Jour where the tension is much more internalized and expressed in a very different mode. It was a fascinating performance.

after the fat man, the beautiful man... biggrin.gif Sterling Hayden as Johnny Clay in The Killing. Paramount dubbed him the most Beautiful man in the movies. He featured in a number of noirs. He did not particularly like acting but it paid for his bread and butter. He served in the marines and loved sailing. He was one of the actors forced to confess the names of "comrades" during the red scare. SF I read your commentary on the Killing and have been planning to comment on that (for ages tongue1.gif ), loved it too. A first rate noir/heist, a sparse film, made with such precision.

Apart from the Killing and an excellent Western with Joan Crawford called Johnny Guitar, Hayden also appeared in two great supporting roles in the 70s - The Godfather as a corrupt cop who is shot by Pacino in the restaurant, and as a drunk writer in The Long Good-Bye (an Altman classic).

2- She had a brief affair with Brando as she admitted later in life. They remained friends afterwards...
3- She has played the role of the most evil woman in Islamic history.

Irene Papas...with the help of google biggrin.gif. In my defense: I have not seen Zorba the Greek or Anne of the Thousand Days or Z or Electra. But I have seen Guns of Navarone. ph34r.gif a long time ago.

And rather late in the day, Aditya and SF, you are right, it is Thora Birch. Has anyone here seen Ghost World? If you have not, I would recommend it.

Yes its Irene Papas. If you haven't seen The Message (she played the cruel Hinda) or Zorba the Greek, its understandable your not recognising her. Zorba is an excellent Anthony Quinn film by the way. I liked it so much, I bought the book, but have yet to read it.

Checking IMDB, Ghost World looks really good. Surprisingly I hadn't seen or heard of it before...

Not an easily recognisable face I confess, she was a prominent star of the 30s-40s working with many top leading men. She was the strongest contender for the Scarlett O'Hara role until Vivien Leigh came on the scene. Married 4 times, husband #2 is an iconic name and #4 was a great anti-war writer.

O a very recognisable face for Chaplin fans. That's Paulette Godard, the waif in Modern Times...and she also acted in The Great Dictator. She was quite stunning in Modern Times... the way the camera dwelt on her in the movie, you could feel Chaplin's fascination with her...

Apart from the dedication and impeccable comic timing, he was also a very natural actor. Many much more successful stars from that era were quite wooden.

This face just doesn't ring a single bell. I'd venture a few guesses though...he's a Brit; active in the 60s; and has been in some war film....

This actor is one of the finest alive. More acclaimed and attuned to the theatre, he has appeared in varying supporting roles in many films of moderate to indifferent quality. However, he enjoyed prominent roles in two classics - one from the 70s and the other recent - and he has carved his name in history with those two performances. His two brilliant movies and performances will NOT be forgotten. One is a highly controversial (and realistic) biopic. The other is a superb adaptation of a famous crime novel. He is the heart of both films.

Who is he?

In 1942 Czechoslovakia, SS-General Reinhard Heydrich is appointed to become the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. The terror and oppression that follow cause Allied authorities in London to authorize a secret mission to kill the man who has come to be known as "The Butcher of Prague". The film explores shows the operation leading up to Heydrich's death as well as the massive German reprisals that followed it. ( IMDB)

During World War 2 a squad of Czech expatriates are parachuted into Czechoslovakia in order to assassinate the German governor Reinhard Heydrich. Operation Daybreak, based on a true story, details the preparations, execution, and aftermath of this operation. (IMDB)

Dear Faraaj...the film Operation daybreak is one of my very special movies. In my adolescence it enchanted me..and in my youth, i just loved it for the Deja vu situations...Please try to watch it when you have leisure..and enjoy the film to the very end...actually based on real life happening..I often wonder why today's big budget movies dont impart that kind of impact !
TIMOTHY BOTTOMS was the hero..if he can be called that..for that film. but otherwise not a great figure.. smile.gif

SF

I feel very foolish for not recognising him! Timothy Bottoms actually starred in one of my probably top-50 favourite films - The Last Picture Show. This was just one of four classics Peter Bogdanovich made, the others being Targets, Paper Moon and What's Up Doc? before he lost his golden touch. Timothy Bottoms also starred in The Paper Chase. Looking at the reviews for Daybreak on IMDB, they are really very good and I really get the feeling this is another "lost" classic.....I've seen several unknown but great films......and I don't use the word great lightly!

Here's a hint: The stalwart appeared in the best adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel. And decades later in a biopic as a truly evil person portrayed in a "relatively" sympathetic light.....you have to guess now!!! biggrin.gif

I think the pic you posted is Joan Fontaine (one of Hitchcock's earlier icy blondes). But which film did she play second fiddle to the femme fatale in? I could be wrong...

By the way, there are three actors famous for the roles they said refused and the meteoric heights their replacements attained. Those three are of course George Raft (replaced by Bogie on Maltese Falcon, Casablance and others), William Holden (Gregory Peck finally said yes to Guns of Navarone, The Omen and a few others) and Tom Selleck (he was the original Indiana Jones!!!).....

Bruno Ganz is correct. May I suggest watching Der Untergang followed by The American Friend back to back. At the end of it, he'll be a great actor in your esteem....

I really prefer watching similar movies together. If you plan Sunset Boulevard, why not do it with Double Indemnity or Ace in the Hole. American Beauty is a completely different style of film.....perhaps it might go better with a newer film like Crash.......or in fact, Michael Douglas's Falling Down....yes, American Beauty + Falling Down....at least thats how I watch films....watch 2-5 films of a feather together....

I've think I've seen this actor on TV but I'm always 2-3 years slow on watching newer films so can't honestly say I recognise the face....

Ignore all the other films I may have recommended. Start with Caligari. You will know while watching it how the sets, camera angles and lighting influenced noir and all those great films of the 40s-50s....the starting point for all that wonderful cinematography was Caligari....and its a haunting little story as well....the visuals are so atmospheric.....something special....

Who is this lady? I attach two pics and lots of hints.

1- She only acted in three movies - all directed by her husband - in her late-30s/40s.
2- The language of those films was not her native tongue.
3- Two of those films often (and justifiably) feature in all-time great or top 100 lists. In fact, both have disastrous Hollywood remakes to their (dis)credit as well.
4- Hitchcock was an admirer of her films.

5- The Hollywood remake of one of her films was directed by the director of the most successful and acclaimed horror movie of all time. That remake sank him!!!

Vera Clouzot smile1.gif

Faraaj, enjoy going through your clues and connecting those dots.... have not seen any of her movies. A Brazilian actress, she acted only in three of her husband, George Clouzot's movies. Les Diaboliques (1957) is a horror classic. The Wages of Fear(1953) was remade by Friedkin as The Sorcerer(1977). The film, made on the heels of The French Connection and The Exorcist, was quite a sensational disaster. Vera died from an apparently mysterious heart attack, which was made much of, as an uncanny repeat of her famous last scene in Les Diaboliques.

SF, I have told you before, I need clues to galvanize my memory for faces. Any old vague/confusing clue will do. tongue1.gif I am pretty sure I have seen his movies.

Posted by: simplefable Jun 22 2009, 12:20 AM

here is a little clue.. smile.gif

He has two roles in common with both David Collings and David Warner.

Posted by: mmuk2004 Jun 22 2009, 12:40 AM

Ah...for me, the Robert Altman connection...

Richard Grant.

This one should not be that difficult, he has acted in some very famous movies... I am sure you have seen them...
He was nominated four times for the Oscars but never won any.

Finally!!! tongue1.gif

Hitchcock tried to purchase the rights to Les Diabolique but Clouzot was quicker and as Hitchcock graciously accepted, made a better film than he could have. Its a real nail-biter and beautifully photographed.

The Wages of Fear is - I believe correctly - called the first thriller. There are no special effects, but the thrills when they come, are extraordinary. The film opens in a dusty oil town in S.America, full of laid off workers and lowlifes. The first 30 minutes are deliberately slow to induce a feeling of lethargy and boredom in which a handful of workers are given an offer of going on a very dangerous mission transporting nitroglycerine in trucks on pot-holed roads. And a rollercoaster ride ensues! There is a "bridge sequence" which has to rank as one of the most tense and well directed scenes in cinema history.

Madhavi

I'm going to let SF guess this one....just a few hints....

1- He was a great stage actor and in fact taught Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir John Gielgud.
2- I have quoted from one of his films with others commenting about his character in http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showtopic=77575&pid=606860&st=0&#entry606860
3- He was married 6 times!!! (found this out from IMDB just now - crazy actors!)

Thanks Faraaj..for the clues. laugh.gif As for marriages, i always feel funny about Rex Harrison..who had six of them to his credit...even after his brilliant portrayal in My fair lady..crooning.. " i will never let a woman in my life ! " so much for fillumwallahs..

SF

If you say GB Shaw's greatest musical you obviously refer to Pygmalion/My Fair Lady.

The star of My Fair Lady, Professor Henry Higgins, was most famously portrayed by one-eyed Rex Harrison. Another famous Higgins was Richard Chamberlain who also appeared in the TV serial Thornbirds.

You know something, I saw a Richard Chamberlain movie last night - The Last Wave. Its an Australian movie and nowhere near as great as the other Peter Weir film Picnic at Hanging Rock.

But, I don't think your guy is Richard Chamberlain. So who is he??? Another hint if Madhavi does not have anything to say.....

Next time you see Coop (great pic by the way) in a movie, just picture him wearing 3 layers of clothing under the shirt and trouser he's wearing, because its true. He was THAT skinny!

Is this pic of a very young Sir Richard Attenborough - perhaps the war film being The Great Escape and the oscar being for Gandhi.....the facial cut is the same but I would not have seen him this young in any role.

I haven't seen too many Rita Hayworth films and the only one I remember is Gilda (1946). Not 100%, but I'm guessing Rita aka Princess Aly Khan as well as Mrs. Orson Welles. Gilda was her finest moment, and of course the finest moment of Gilda was when she dances and sings the lovely song "Put the Blame on Mame Boys...". I would u/l the song because its not in the public domain, but here's a Youtube link to see and hear it....lemme know if the pic was not of Rita!!! Meanwhile, enjoy this excellent song....

On second thought, I change my guess to Gina Lollobrigida....she came in an amazing (the best) circus movie Trapeze opposite Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Even better than Loren's Sunflower. Come September was also good fun....

I meant the original 12 Angry Men - Fonda version. Lee is the main protagonist and last angry man.

Brando's performance in On the Waterfront won him his first oscar. According to some film critics, it is still the single greatest performance recorded on film. Lee J Cobb, Karl Malden and Eva Marie-Saint (later in North by Northwest) are great in that too.

Shall we dance?
On a bright cloud of music shall we fly?
Shall we dance?
Shall we then say "Goodnight and mean "Goodbye"?
Or perchance,
When the last little star has left the sky,
Shall we still be together
With our arms around each other
And shall you be my new romance?
On the clear understanding
That this kind of thing can happen,
Shall we dance?
Shall we dance?

Sutherland was not wasted in the same sense as Yul. Certainly the fact that he was Canadian played against him. But he deliberately chose to portray a wide range of roles instead of being stereotyped. He came in many great films, but none greater than Don't Look Now. This is a very artistic horror movie, directed by Nicholas Roeg - David Lean's photographer on Lawrence of Arabia etc. The colors and camerawork are among the best ever. And its an lovely, enigmatic film. Beg, borrow or steal, but do watch Don't Look Now. In fact, I think I'll watch it for the umpteenth time this weekend.

SF this film won a number of oscars though. The film is loosely biographical and not really historically accurate. It is an adaptation of a hit play by Peter Schaffer. That is why there is such a strong theatrical element to it. Here's a trailer of the movie to tempt those who have not seen it.

Joel McCrea! Its unfortunate that he is such an unknown despite having been in some wonderful movies e.g. with Veronica Lake and others, several of the Preston Sturges classic comedies and many, many westerns. Katharine Hepburn remarked that he was one of the best actors she had worked with and she always wondered why he wasn't as big a star as Spencer Tracy or Bogart, because he had all the requisite ingredients to be a top-notch star. Do check out his movies if you can. You'll be impressed with him....

Oops...crossed lines....haven't seen Wilby Conspiracy or heard of it. In more recent roles, like Prestige etc., he has maintained his consistently high standards but those roles have tended to be cameos or supporting roles. Take the recent Batman films as an example.

Rutger Hauer indeed....a Dutch actor - he appeared in two Dutch classics in the 70s Soldaat Van Oranje and Turks Fruit. Turks Fruit, which is quite explicit, should be available. In the US, he made two genre greats. The first was Blade Runner, a magnificent sci-fi. Do watch the directors cut. This is a neo-noir sci-fi with brilliant visuals and great direction by Ridley Scott. The second was The Hitcher. He is actually most famous for his role as the sick, twisted hitcher who hitchhikes rides on the freeway and tortures/murders his victims for no apparent motive. Its an edge of your seat thriller and he is truly menacing in it.....since then, his output has been pretty ordinary....

Reading David Niven's two books - The Moon's a Balloon and Bring On the Empty Horses was a joy. I was never a fan of Niven the actor. But after reading those two books, I really began to like him. He had an amazing sense of humour and was a born writer and raconteur. I've literally read hundreds of bio's and books on cinema. His two books are the best there are on cinema and among the very best bio's I've read. Highly recommended to anyone lucky enough not to have read them yet! You'll be holding your sides with laughter yet learning a great deal about a fascinating era.

There are only three films in 80+ years of Academy Awards to win all 4 top Oscars - Best Pic, Director, Lead Actor and Leading Actress. Those three undoubted classics were It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Silence of the Lambs (1992).

Colbert starred in It Happened One Night, a film that started the genre of screwball comedy. It Happened has been remade probably a dozen times but none of the versions could touch it with a ten-foot pole. Two indian versions most HF'ers would be familiar with are Raj Kapoor's Chori Chori and Amir Khan's Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin. With It Happened... Clark Gable, who was given the film as a punishment, became the King of Hollywood. There is a scene in the film where he took off his shirt and lo and behold he wasn't wearing a vest underneath. The impact of that scene was felt by the undergarment industry for years with sales of vests falling over 60% in America!!! Those were real stars.....

That is correct. But arguably an original screenplay is a notch above adapted screenplay. Quentin Tarantino has frequently made disparaging remarks about screenplay adapters!

Elvis was a lousy actor appearing in lousy films in which his singing was the only plus. This is all because of his stupid manager - an ex Fauji!!! His manager Colonel Tom Parker insisted that Elvis not appear opposite any star or capable female because he would come out looking bad. Did you know the Defiant Ones was written for him and Sammy Davis. The good Colonel said no and the roles went to Tony Curtis and Poitier.

The only film where a halfway decent actress slipped through and starred opposite Elvis was Viva Las Vegas. The lady was Ann-Margret and the film is definitely Elvis's best. The mere fact that he was starring opposite a talented performer made him perform much better. I would suggest searching this film out. It has a lovely duet The Lady Loves Me and It Shows....beautiful song.

By the way, there was a wonderful ballad in It Happened... called The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze. These are rare songs and I have them both. Would love to upload them but don't think they are in the public domain so there could be issues with HF Admin. sad.gif

Here is one contemporary director..whom i respect a lot.
here are a few tips to identify him...

He employs non-linear storytelling techniques, often flipping around the three acts of a movie to tell the story in an interesting fashion....
His films usually revolve around characters that are afflicted with some kind of psychological disorder...
He hates CGI and never employed them in his films...

Would love to hear from you guys.. smile.gif

I would never have recognised the face. But the clues you gave immediately made me look up the classic neo-noir Memento (2000) and click on its director - who also made the brilliant top of genre Dark Knight (2008). He is undoubtedly a great auteur....

Posted by: simplefable Jul 10 2009, 01:09 PM

Faraaj...that is fast. smile.gif
I strongly recommend you to see if you can get..."the following" which was directed by Nolan on a shoe string budget...it is a black and white film.. Am sure it will keep you rivetted.. I am no great fan of the batman..so never saw that film.

I'm no great super-hero fan. And of the superhero's Batman, to me, always looked the least interesting. But Nolan has created something really special in Dark Knight. Leave aside the hype and evaluate the film on its own merits and you have a work of art. I intend to see Nolan's pre Memento work as I do believe him to be one of a handful of genuine auteurs around.

Alan Arkin has appeared in two great films of the 90s. Glengarry Glenross is one of the top 10 films of the decade. Containing one of the greatest ensemble casts - Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Arkin, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Jonathan Pryce - it is a dizzling drama with dialogue that crackles. The film inhabits a truly mean and cruel world. The other great film of his that I saw was Gattaca, one of the most intelligent sci-fi films ever made.

I have, but have yet to see Wait Until Dark. I'm aware its a classic. I also have the book The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and its in my list of books to read sometime in the 21st century!!!

I could never find that disk again..it hid among my colllection. sad.gif Needless to say, am the worst manager. Never learnt the art of keeping my collection in a tidy way. laugh.gif

Hint time:

1- Starred in a famous Broadway musical but when the film was made, he was controversially not cast.
2- Appeared in an iconic comedy. One of his classic insults to the lead character was to refer to him as "You fish faced enemy of the people".
3- He is of jewish persuasion.

Posted by: simplefable Jul 11 2009, 04:02 PM

Faraaj...thanks for the hints...smile.gif
Zero Mostel...is the answer. Producers is the film where he starred..iconic comedy of Mel brooks...I havent seen him in any film..so was lost.

He starred in a epic disaster film of 1974 which had star studded cast. He further in later stages revealed that he is gay...and how difficult it was for him to hide that and be the perfect american teenage idol.
smile.gif
He denounced the glamor world of hollywood and turned to the stage...

Pic looks to be a silent era actress and there is something about the face which is slightly familar. But it doesn't look like Pickford to me. Even the Gish sisters directed a film each in the silent era.

Madhavi, need a hint...

Posted by: mmuk2004 Jul 17 2009, 01:54 AM

It is not Pickford SF. Faraaj, you almost got it, no need for a hint. smile.gif It is Lilian Gish. Have any of you seen the Griffith silents?

Hi Madhavi

It initially looked like Lillian Gish to me but when I compared the face to her IMDB pics, I thought not.

I have a few of the Griffith silents. I'm just put off by the fact that he was a racist and his depiction of the KKK in Birth of a Nation.....in silents, I really lean towards German cinema.....the bits and pieces I've seen apart from German were not so interesting....

Posted by: simplefable Jul 17 2009, 09:40 AM

Oh..i totally goofed out. laugh.gif
No, never saw any silent films other than.....the silent movie of Mel brooks. smile.gif and ofcourse Chaplin.
