Shair Aur Sargam

In this new thread I would like to share songs from the films (through the year 1999) for which the following seven great poets wrote lyrics. The poets are:

Anand Bakshi (around 670 films)
Hasrat Jaipuri (around 280 films)
Javed Akhtar (around 90 films)
Majrooh Sultanpuri (around 320 films)
Rajinder Krishan (around 230 films)
Shailendra (around 175 films)
Shakeel Badayuni (around 95 films)

I am attaching their picture below. Top row on the left is Shailendra and on the right is Hasrat Jaipuri. The second row from left to right are Shakeel Badayuni, Anand Bakshi, and Majrooh Sultanpuri. On the third row to the left is Rajinder Krishan and to the right is Javed Akhtar.

Today's topic is Anand Bakshi. He was one of the most prolific and successful writers. Laxmikant & Pyarelal were major beneficiaries. He wrote songs for about 100 films for which R.D. Burman composed music.

(Anand Bakshi) Sher-E-Baghdad (1957)

Bakshi Saab recorded his first song for "Bhala Aadmi" in 1956. However its release was delayed until 1958. In 1957 he had two films released. This is one of them. Apparently he wrote only one song for this film. Unfortunately I don't have it to share with you. I am also missing few other songs from this film. These are shown in red italics in the table below. I am requesting members to share these if they can. Thank you.

Here are the songs I have from this film...

(Hasrat Jaipuri) Barsaat (1949)

Most of the following write up appeared in my earlier posting of songs from this film....

Raj Kapoor was just 25 year old when he made “Barsaat (1949)”. His first directorial venture, “Aag (1948)”, even though was not a financial success, established him as someone to whom people will be looking forward to in future movies for the style and showmanship that movie showed glimpses of. Raj didn’t disappoint his fans and critics.

“Barsaat” in more ways than one was trailblazing. It introduced a new actress to the Hindi screen, Nimmi. It was shot mostly outdoors in Kashmir and its surrounding places. It introduced a pair of music directors, Shankar & Jaikishan. It introduced a pair of lyricists, Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri. It catapulted Lata Mangeshkar, who sang 10 out of 11 songs (both solos and duets) in the movie that enabled her to compete for the number one female playback singer position with Geeta Roy who was the reigning singing nightingale at that time. It consolidated Nargis & Raj Kapoor as the hottest romantic pair of the Indian screen.

The music director Shankar had passion for tabla. Though he learnt fundamentals from known ustads of that time, it was through tireless practice and undeterred determination he was able to master fundamentals of good music. Jaikishan on the other hand loved playing harmonium. Shankar and Jaikishan met at a musical gathering and formed a strong bond of friendship even though Shankar was 10 years senior to Jaikishan. At that time Shankar was working for Prithvi Theater doing odd jobs including acting. He introduced Jaikishan to Prithviraj and was hired to work together with Shankar. They later worked as assistants to the music director duo Husnlal & Bhagatram. When Raj Kapoor was contemplating to make “Aag”, Prithviraj recommended to Raj to hire Shankar & Jaikishan for his picture. But Raj already signed Ram Ganguly to provide the music. Shankar & Jaikishan along with Dattaram assisted Ganguly in music for “Aag”. When the time came to film “Barsaat”, Raj decided to offer the music direction duties to Shankar & Jaikishan. With that the famous music team of Shankar & Jaikishan was born.

Hasrat Jaipuri was working as a bus conductor in Bombay while writing poetry in his spare time, as poetry was his passion. Prithviraj heard Hasrat recite some of his poems in a mushaira. Impressed, he introduced him to Raj who was launching “Barsaat”. His first recording was the song “Jiya Beqaraar Hai” the music for which was composed by Shankar. Jaikishan composed his second song, a duet, “Chhod Gaye Baalam”. Shailendra was a railway clerk in Bombay. Raj Kapoor first saw him in a public meeting where Shailendra was reciting his poems. Raj offered work for him on “Aag”. But Shailendra refused thinking he will not have creative freedom. But in a year things changed. Shailendra needed money and decided to approach Raj. Raj hired him to write songs for “Barsaat” along with Hasrat Jaipuri. He wrote two songs for the film; “Patli Kamar Hai” and the title song “Barsaat Mein”. This was the birth of the famous lyricist team of Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri.

The team of Shankar, Jaikishan, Hasrat Jaipuri, and Shailendra that came together to contribute their respective skills for “Barsaat” went on to make magnificent musical history by churning out one hit after another. The youthful exuberance and the effervescent blend of melody they brought to “Barsaat” continued to pervade their creations for nearly 30 years. A magnificent achievement by any standards!

Shailendra

The lyricist Shailendra was the other half of the team of Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri who wrote songs for most of the films of Shankar & Jaikishan through 1960's. Shailendra died at a tender age of 43 when he was still in prime because of failing health and heartbreak due to the financial losses he suffered producing the award winning film "Teesri Kasam (1966)". Seshadri,

I have Shakeel already included in the thread. As far as the other two, it is not possible to include them at this point. This was lot of work, many months, to put together movies of these seven great lyricists. Without that kind of effort I will not be able to do satisfying justice to the topic. May be yourself or someone else can forward and share songs of these other two lyricists you have mentioned.

Cheers,
S

It is true that Shakeel Sahaab may have contributed merely 600 to 700 songs but the quality, feelings & richness of litreture in each lyrics were 100%, making him super hit lyricist scoring atleast 70%. bow.gif

Shakeel Badayuni

For a person who was in the film industry for nearly 50 years, Shakeel Badayuni wrote lyrics for hardly 90 movies. In 70's, 80's, and 90's he wrote songs for only four films. Early in his career he contributed songs for films composed mainly by Naushad Saab.

It is true that Shakeel Sahaab may have contributed merely 600 to 700 songs but the quality, feelings & richness of litreture in each lyrics were 100%, making him super hit lyricist scoring atleast 70%. bow.gif

I feel the same way about Shakeel Saab. Otherwise he will not be part of this thread. Cheers. -S

(Hasrat Jaipuri) Awara (1951)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier posting of this film.

K.A. Abbas had a tremendous influence over the movies Raj Kapoor made early in his career. He was responsible for the proletarian ethos of the Raj’s early films. The culmination of coming together of Abbas ji and Raj was professionally strange, to speak the least. Raj was a deeply religious person. Abbas ji on the other hand was probably an agnostic but a definite rationalist. If Raj was progressive, that was veiled and became somewhat clearer only though his films. He didn’t adhere to any ideology and definitely was apolitical. In contrast Abbas ji was a hard core and avowed, die hard Marxist.

Abbas ji wrote stories, dialogues, or screenplays for some of Raj’s best movies. These include “Awara” (1951 - screenplay and dialogue), “Shree 420” (1955 - story, screenplay, and dialogue), “Jagte Raho” (1956 - screenplay), “Mera Naam Joker” (1970 - story and screenplay), “Bobby” (1973 - story and screenplay), and “Henna” (1991 - story). Almost all these movies were smashing successes except for “Jagte Raho” and “Mera Naam Joker”. Even these two became kind of cult classics many years after their releases.

Abbas ji in an interview fondly recalled his association with Raj Kapoor as follows: "While Raj Kapoor is no great ideologue, he is not allergic to ideas. Indeed, with his basic sympathy for the common man, he is more than amenable to socially progressive ideas and humanist ideals, so long as their presentation does not interfere with the popularity potential of his film".

What did Raj Kapoor thought of Abbas ji? Here is what Raj said in one interview: “Fortunately, I have from the very start been happy in my professional associations and it was quite early in my film career, when I was scarcely a film and a half old, that my association with K.A. Abbas began. That was ‘Awara’, an exciting intellectual adventure, which set off an exchange of ideas and a way of working between Abbas sahib and myself that continues to this day. ‘Awara’ embodies my earliest fashioning of the sort of universal humanity symbol which was to go on taking finer shape through a succession of films until ‘Mera Naam Joker’, where it emerged as the crystallization of my entire philosophy of life.”

Here are some interesting tidbits. Dewan Basheshwarnath Kapoor, father of Prithviraj and grandfather of Raj, appeared as a judge in the beginning of the fim. Shashi Kapoor, younger brother of Raj, played young Raj in the film. Prem Nath, Raj’s brother-in-law appeared as one of the singers on the boat in the song “Naiyya Teri”. Raja Navathe, the assistant director of this film, later directed Raj’s musical “Aah (1953)”.

I am uploading all the songs and some specials in five back-to-back posts. The first two posts contain the complete songs from the film. The second post also contains few music clips from the film. The third post contains several extended version songs. The fourth post contains some specials. The fifth and the final post contain some instrumentals of the songs from the film.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves in the first post…

(Javed Akhtar) Andaz (1971)

Javed Akhtar co-wrote the screenplay for this popular film. I am posting songs from this movie in two back-to-back posts. First post contains all of the songs from the film. The second post contains some instrumentals.

The movie signified, in a way, "the changing of guard". Here the baton was passed from the very popualr Shammi Kapoor to a new romantic hero on the horizon, Rajesh Khanna. In a brief appearance Rajesh was endearingly dominating compared to the role played by Shammi. Fans will never forget Rajesh's refreshingly heart warming performance.

Here are the songs in the first post...

(Majrooh) Shahjehan (1946)

Ragini, who played Mumtaz Mahal in this film, was known as “Aaho Chashm” (deer like eyes). Kanwar, who played the title role in this film, appeared as a leading man with Ragini in an earlier Punjabi film, “Dulla Bhatti (1940)”. Kanwar came from a rich background and was smitten by Ragini’s beauty. It was he who persuaded producer-director Kardar to cast himself as Shahjehan so that he could be close to Ragini who Kardar already cast to play Mumtaj Mahal. However, Ragini rejected all his advances. A dejected Kanwar became an alcoholic and eventually died of tuberculosis. Ragini who later migrated to Pakistan also had tough life. In her last days she was abandoned by her own daughter. Sadly she died forgotten, poor and lonely.

I am including here in the second post an interview with Naushadji where he fondly recalls his experience working with Saigal Saab. It is a very touching interview. This is a must for anyone interested in Saigal Saab.

Here are the songs in the first post...

(Javed Akhtar) Haathi Mere Saathi (1971)

The producer of this film, Devar from Tamilnadu, was famous for making films with animals in the central lead. He made many successful films almost all on similar story lines. When he approached Rajesh Khanna to star in his film, Khanna asked for huge fees. When Devar agreed, Khanna insisted that he would like to have a new team to write the screenplay. Devar also agreed to this request. Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar were pursuing separate careers until this film. They were brought together at Rajesh Khanna's request to team up and come up with a screenplay based on the Tamil story which already proved to be a popular film. This was the first for the team with many hits to follow in the course of time.

Here are the songs from this film...

(Hasrat Jaipuri) Hulchul (1951)

This movie was directed by K. Asif (who later produced and directed the magnum-opus “Mughal-E-Azam” in 1960). While the shooting was going on, Balraj Sahni, who had a pivotal role in the film, was arrested by the Government of India for his activities associated with IPTA (Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association). Sahniji was one of the founding members of the Association. Some of the other members of the Association included names like K.A. Abbas, Kaifi Azmi, Salil Chowdhury, Utpal Dutt, Ritwik Ghatak, Prithviraj Kapoor, Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, and others.

Asif Saab has to take special permission from the Government to have Sahniji released to continue the shooting of the film. Police used to escort him to the studio and stay on the set while he discharged his duties as an actor. They would later take him back to the jail each day. However, Balrajji was soon released from jail as the Government decided not to prosecute any of the members of the IPTA.

The song writer Hasrat Jaipuri Saab did not write any songs for the film. However, he wrote its screenplay. Songs for the film were composed by two music directors, Sajjad Hussain and Mohd. Shafi. I am uploading songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set…

(Javed Akhtar) Seeta Aur Geeta (1972)

Even though the story of the film is credited to Salim & Javed, the movie was a copy of "Ram Aur Shyam (1967)" with the role reversal where Hema played the dual role. But "Ram" itself was a remake of the Telugu hit "Ramudu Bheemudu (1964)".

Ramesh Sippy, who directed the movie, later of "Sholay" fame, in an interview observed the difficult time he had during shooting the movie with both male leads in the movie, Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar, in real life competing for Hema's affections. He also recalled how Hema was frightened to shoot the scene where she has to sit on the ceiling fan. Hema did win a Filmfare award for her performance as twin sisters.

There are several nice songs in this film. My favorite is the duet of Asha and Kishoreda, "Hawa ke Saath Saath". Here is this and other songs from this film from an original soundtrack album...

(Majrooh) Aag (1948)

The following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings...

Young Raj Kapoor’s burning desire was to make his own movies. Unsatisfied with the few movies he worked for, he launched his first production in early 1947, aptly titled “Aag”. He sold everything he owned to raise the money. He even borrowed some from his servant who used to work at his house. Besides acting in it he co-wrote the story, wrote its screenplay, and also directed it.

The story dealt with a complex emotional triangle and comprised of three leading ladies; Nargis, Kamini Kaushal, and Nigar Sultana. The movie was restrained by smallness of its scale. Sets were modest. But camera was used chiefly for high-contrast lighting that proved to be brilliant for the movie.

Raj also introduced his wife’s brother, Prem Nath in the movie in a pivotal role. His younger brother Shashi played younger Raj. His father recommended signing Shankar & Jaikishan (who were working for Prithvi Theatres) as music directors but Raj already signed Ram Ganguly. Both Shankar & Jaikishan (uncredited) as well as Dattaram were assistants to Ganguly in this movie.

During its production, India became independent from the British rule. Raj was able to complete the movie within a year, by early 1948. The movie was ready for screening, but Raj couldn’t find any distributors to release his film. Undeterred Raj went ahead and released the movie himself. The movie was a commercial failure. However, Raj’s charged story treatment, its fine shot compositions and deft handling of the camera movements, and the beautiful music had secured many rarified reviews.

The movie may not have worked but Raj has arrived. He recruited a youthful team. He established his own R.K. Films banner. The movie world took notice that the fiery Raj who had shown sparks of brilliance with his “Aag” is about to set the world on fire with several socially conscientious movies in years to come.

I am uploading the songs in two back-to-back posts. Incidentally, Majrooh Saab wrote only one song for the film. Here is the first set…

Kishore Sahu was looking for two new women to act in this film. In a widely held contest the winners were Asha Mathur and Bina Rai. Bina Rai was introduced as the heroine in the film with Mathur in a significant supporting role. Mathur couldn't do much as an actress. She acted in only 10 films. Bina Rai had better luck even though never soared to the heights of her contemporaries like Nargis or Madhubala.

Here are the songs from this fine album composed by Shankar & Jaikishan...

(Javed Akhtar) Yaadon ki Baaraat (1973)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings...

Here is a beautiful musical from RD. Kishoreda has some lovely numbers in it. But to me the standout song, one of my all-time favorite songs, is the duet by Asha & Rafi Saab, the beautiful "Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko". I was attending one of Ashaji's concerts where she told the audience how this song evolved. RD was thinking about it for some time and suddenly he knew what to do. He had Asha accompany him to bazaar to buy some wine glasses. They returned to the studio and RD created this tune using clinking of the wine glass with a spoon and had Asha and Rafiji sing the song to its accompaniment.

Nasir Hussain, who directed this movie, originally wanted Asha Parekh, his favorite star, to play the leading lady. But Asha was readying herself to go on a tour abroad with her dancing troupe and was not immediately available. Zeenat readily accepted when the role was offered to her.

One of the delightful music pieces is the long number performed by the trio Asha, Kishore and RD, "Aap Ke Kamre Mein Koi Rehta Hai". In spite of its length, the song entertains. The title song also was a hugely popular number.

Neetu Singh, who started as a child star, was promoted to adult roles the previous year in 1972. The film she starred that year, “Rikshawala”, flopped. Producers were shying away to offer her any more adult roles. When producer and director Nasir Hussain approached her to be in a dance number in this film, she readily accepted it. The hit song “Lekar Hum” was picturized on her. Her eye catching dress and eye popping dance moves got immediate attention. This dance number gave her career an immediate boost and revived her career for good.

That is Aamir Khan, current day’s hot star, playing the role of the youngest brother in the film when they were all children. This was his debut movie. Nearly 17 years later, he made the debut as an adult in his uncle Nasir Hussain’s “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1989)” which was a super hit and immediately established him as a star to look forward to in the future.

This movie was made into several other languages, notably in the South. All of them were hits.

I am uploading songs from this film in three back-to-back posts. The first post contains all songs from the film. The second post contains several specials. The third post contains some instrumentals.

Here are the songs in the first post...

(Javed Akhtar) Zanjeer (1973)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings of this movie...

This is the movie Amitabh was patiently waiting to happen. After his stunning award winning debut in 1969 with Abbas's "Saat Hindustani" and even after some good roles like Hrishida's masterpiece "Anand" in 1971, Amitabh was still down on his luck as a struggling actor and was desperately trying to find his niche. Then "Zanjeer" happened. The role originally offered to the debonair Dev Anand was offered to Amitabh when Dev turned down because there were no songs for the hero!

In a way "Zanjeer" is an out and out a great cop movie that redefined a Hindi film hero, the one who fights back for the justice, the one who is brooding and angry. In a nutshell an "Angry Young Man" was born. However, unfortunately the movie also brought on an abrupt end to good romantic films which were elevated to some what of a higher status with series of hits by the Superstar Rajesh Khanna. Now the films became solely action oriented. Movies in which women with good roles just about disappeared.

"Zanjeer" was a well conceived and well directed taut thriller with a superb performance by Amitabh and an equally endearing performance by Pran. The movie took away several Filmfare awards. The writing team of Salim & Javed were awarded for the Best Story and the Best Screenplay. Mahadik walked as the Best Editor for his crisp editing that kept the movie's suspense at a taut pace. Finally, Gulshan Bawra won for the Best Lyrics for that great Manna's song "Yaari Hai Imaan Mera". All well deserving awards.

Now for a description of the songs from an original soundtrack album and the songs themselves ...

(Majrooh) Andaz (1949)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings of this film...

Here is a classic that never gets dated. Probably that is why it is a classic. This was definitely one of the great movies of Mehboob Khan. If his other great classic “Mother India” dealt with rustic India, this movie dealt with urban India and the influence of western culture on it. Both movies starred one of our greatest actresses, Nargis. She probably owes to Mehboob more than anyone else for bringing out the best in her.

Nargis was hardly 19 years old when “Andaz” was made. She was already an established actress. As a matter of fact she had the top billing in this movie with Dilp Kumar and Raj Kapoor names to appear after hers when the titles of the movie rolled. This was the first movie in which her acting abilities were really challenged. The role had many shades of complexity and demanded consummate histrionics. She rose to the occasion magnificently. She brings out the carefree tomboyish nature of a growing woman with much glee and élan. She puts forth forcibly the role of a responsible business woman with ever so ease. She exemplifies as an adoring wife with romantic abandon. She gives intensity to her performance to show moral conflict of a person caught between the loves of two men which shows bleeding wounds of suffering. This is the movie Nargis announced to the world that she has arrived.

After casting Nargis, Mehboob Khan asked her whom does she want to play her husband in the movie, Dilip or Raj. She chose Raj. Each of the male leads did a great job in such contrasting roles. It was restraint in acting of Dilip versus the deliberate overplay of Raj. It was fun to watch these two great performers for the first and the last time together in the same movie.

The movie has some great music by Naushad ji. Like in most of his early movies, Naushadji was just brilliant. Every song was a super hit. Interestingly all songs by Mukesh were picturized on Dilip and Rafi for Raj. Incidentally, the previous year, in “Mela (1948)”, Naushad used the voice of Mukesh for Dilip. Those songs were also huge hits.

This was a banner year for Lata. Every song in this movie was a huge hit. But this didn’t come easy. While recording of these songs Naushadji felt that Lata lacked proper Urdu diction. Lataji’s mother tongue being Marathi, this was not unusual. Naushadji spent many hours coaching Lata how to speak Urdu and how to sing some of these songs. This becomes very evident when Lata sings the song “Uthaaye Jaa Unke Sitam” in this movie. Lata also had another magnificent movie this same year in Raj Kapoor’s memorable musical “Barsaat”. That solidified her position in the industry as a singer par excellence and in the coming years a promise of force to reckon with.

Because of the number of songs I will upload these in three back-to-back posts. I am also including some of the unreleased songs that became available few years back. The first btwo posts contain songs from the film and the third post contains some instrumentals.

Now for the first set of songs …

Hi SP,

There are two movies with same name. One Lachak was released in 1951 and the other one was released in 1958. In fact the name of the movie released in 1958 was "Aakashpari", but the records were released with the name Lachak & Dil Bahaar. Music for this 1958 movie was by Inayat Ali and songs were penned by Anjum Pilibitti & Gulshan Jalalabadi (HFGK credits it to Anjum Pilibhiti only but 2 out of 8 songs are by Gulshan Jalalabadi). You have mixed one song from 1958 movie in this list and there is duplication also. Here are the details-

Duplicate songs-
Tootte hi dil & Ban kar kisi gareeb.
O topiwale babu and lachak meri dekhte jana.
Pyar kiya ji maine and O maine pyar kiya.

This is from 1958 Lachak-

(Hasrat Jaipuri) Lachak (1951)

This is from 1958 Lachak-
Unhe haal apna

Viraj

Thank you very much Viraj for sharing this information. I went ahead and cleaned up the table based on your suggestions. Thanks a bunch again.

Cheers,
S

(Javed Akhtar) Deewaar (1975)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings of this fabulous film...

“Deewaar” is an example of an outstanding Indian cinema. Everything about this film, almost everything, is just marvelous craftsmanship. The gripping story was a cleverly juxtaposed urbanized version of Mehboob’s “Mother India (1957)” and Dilip’s “Gunga Jumna (1961)”. But the way it was presented with one of the greatest performances ever seen on an Indian screen, by Amitabh, the movie was just riveting. It was almost spellbinding in the way the director treats the subject matter. Powerful dialogues by the story and screenplay writers Salim and Javed also helped. I don’t believe that Yash Chopra, who directed this movie, was ever this good before this movie or after this.

The movie originally was to be made with a different producer with Shatrughan Sinha and Navin Nischol playing brothers. But the writing team developed differences with the producer and the story was sold to Gulshan Rai. Rai wanted to cast Waheeda in the mother’s role but Yash was already directing her and Amitabh in “Kabhi Kabhie” as wife and husband so decided against it. Vyjayanti Mala was offered the role, but she declined it. Finally Nirupa Roy was cast in the role.

Interestingly, 1975 was a banner year for Amitabh. His history making “Sholay” was also released the same year. But with this film Amitabh once for all solidified his position in the film industry as the “Angry Young Man” of the screen with his mesmerizingly powerful portrayal. The movie also introduced a new type of heroine in Parveen Babi to the screen. Babi was not new but the role she played was so atypical. She played a liberated woman. She drank alcohol, smoked cigarettes, and slept with her lover out of wedlock, almost everything against the established norms of Hindi film heroines.

Salim & Javed apparently developed the script so tight that originally the movie was not to have any songs in the film. But both the producer and director decided to add songs almost as an afterthought. This may be one reason, this movie that has everything going for it, I believe is a little let down with its music. The songs are actually not that bad. I like them more now than when I first heard them. Still, the song “Kehdoon Tumhen” was a chart-buster.

The movie was nominated for so many awards. It walked away with seven Filmfare awards. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Story, Best Screenplay, Best Dialogues, Best Sound, and Best Supporting Actor (Shashi). Amitabh was nominated in the Best Actor category but lost to Sanjeev Kumar for “Aandhi”. I think Sanjeev was great in “Aandhi” but his performance was not anything close to that of Amitabh’s. Amitabh breathed fire into his role and in some scenes you cringe in pain and empathize with his melancholy and unbearable suffering. All in all an unforgettable performance that should have been recognized.

The movie was remade in Tamil and Telugu and both versions were also huge hits.

Now for a description of the songs and the songs themselves…

(Shailendra) Daag (1952)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings of this album...

This is yet another beautiful album from the energetic music duo Shankar & Jaikishan, very early in their career. Talat Saab sings four songs, all just absolutely beautiful.

This movie was made by Amiya Chakraborty who was responsible for so many fine movies, like "Patita (1953)", "Kathputli (1957)", "Dekh Kabira Roya (1957)", and others. "Daag" dealt with the subject of an alcoholic who had difficult time kicking the addiction. Dilip Saab played the alcoholic. For his performance he won the first Filmfare Best Actor Award instituted that year. This was his first with many more to follow in the future. Award or not, when I saw the movie recently, I felt something was missing from Dilip Saab's performance. It didn't have the same depth or pathos he usually brings to his roles. I think it could have been better. Time and again Dilip Saab proved that he is capable of bringing this to his performances in so many other movies. May be it was because the whole movie had this mood of depression. Either way, I am convinced that this probably served as a precursor to that memorable winning performance from the thespian when he played a heart broken alcoholic lover later in Bimalda's classic film "Devdas (1955)".

I am uploading these songs from the original sound track album in back-to-back two posts. Here is the first set of songs...

(Javed Akhtar) Sholay (1975)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings of this epic fun film...

This movie became a phenomenon throughout India as it went on to establish record after record at the box office. It ran successfully for over five years. It grossed an astounding figure of nearly 800 crores of Rupees. It celebrated the golden jubilee in over 60 theatres. It ran over 25 weeks in more than 100 theatres. BBC declared it as the “Film of the Millennium”. Even though “Sholay” snubbed originally by the influential Filmfare magazine, it gave recently the award for it as the Best Film in 50 Years.

The movie was based on a simple idea. It was a story of revenge molded after several successful westerns. Yet it is surprising why this movie became such an unprecedented rage among filmgoers. The biggest answer lies in the character Gabbar Singh as played by the late great Amjad Khan. This person was molded after a real life dacoit of the same name. Khan Saab (son of the great actor, Jayant) debuted as a child artiste in Raj Kapoor’s “Ab Dilli Door Nahin” in 1957. His first adult role as an actor was in “Hindustan ki Kasam” released in 1973. But “Sholay” was the movie that brought him instant fame and recognition. A villain in an Indian film never looked meaner and his deeds scarier than Khan’s were from this movie. He gave an unforgettable performance that would be envious of any veteran actor. Simply put, his performance was phenomenal. Apparently he prepared for the role by reading Taroon Bhaduri’s book “Abhishapth Chambal” which chronicled the doings of dacoits of Chambal valley. Taroonji was the father of Jaya Bhaduri, who also starred in this film. Interestingly Khan Saab was not the original choice of the producers. They wanted Danny Denzongpa for the role. But Danny was away in Afghanistan shooting for Feroze Khan’s “Dharmatma (1975)” and was not immediately available. Later on after many years when a film journalist asked Danny whether he regrets missing out to play Gabbar Sing, he retorted more or less in this vein: “You can get many Danny’s every day. But how many times you will get an Amjad Khan the way he portrayed the role.”

I think the song “Mehbooba O Mehbooba” by RD was another chief contributor to the success this movie enjoyed. RD did such a splendid job with his vocals and the music he composed for the film fuses Indian sounds with elements of Afro-Cuban, Arabic, and Latin reflecting his musical genius. Especially the background score where Gabbar Singh is located in a desolate rocky terrain gives such an eerie feeling.

Both the romantic pairs got hitched while preparations to make this movie were going on. Few months before the movie was to be launched, Jaya and Amitabh were married. Soon after that Jaya got pregnant delaying the shooting of the movie. Also, besides being already married and with children, garam Dharam was after Hema’s affections. Originally Dharam wanted to play the role of Thakur (eventually played by Sanjeev Kumar). He was informed that then Sanjeev will get the role of Veeru. When he learned that Veeru will get the girl in the movie, as Sanjeev proposed to Hema only a few months back, Dharam changed his mind quickly and took Veeru’s role. Apparently Dharam used to bribe the light boys while shooting so that he can have several retakes with Hema. Incidentally, Hema does not appear with Sanjeev in any scenes in the movie. This was done at her request because she did not want to be near him.

Shatrughan Sinha was considered for the role of Jai, but Dharmendra persuaded the director to have Amitabh play the role. Amitabh also went to the director to convince him that he would be the right choice to play Jai.

The movie was shot near Bangalore. The rocky terrain, called Ramanagaram, where the movie was shot is now a tourist attraction. Parts of Ramanagaram were renamed as “Sippy Nagar”. The village that was built for the movie was left intact by the producers.

“Sholay” was the first Hindi movie to be shot in stereophonic sound. It was also presented in the 70mm widescreen format. The song “Chaand Sa Koi” is not in the movie. After the song was recorded, director Ramesh Sippy decided to not include it in the movie. So the song was never picturized. Anand Bakshi Saab, the lyricist, was one of the co-singers of the song.

I am uploading songs from this film in four back-to-back posts. These include all songs from the film, several music clips, some instrumentals, and few extended versions. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves …

(Javed Akhtar) Don (1978)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my previous postings of this film...

The producer of the movie was the ace photographer Norman Irani. Earlier he made a movie called “Zindagi Zindagi (1972)” that was a financial disaster. Irani was in extreme financial strain and couldn’t meet his loan payments. While he was working with Manoj Kumar on his “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1984)”, some of the cast members of that movie including Amitabh, Pran, and Zeenat and the assistant director Chandra Barot decided to help out Irani. They procured the script of “Don” from the writing team of Salim & Javed. The writing team shelved this project because they couldn’t find any takers for the storyline. Thus the team to make “Don” was formed.

Before the movie was finished, Irani died in an accident. Everyone involved decided to finish the movie by taking salary cuts. Zeenat Aman did not take any salary. At Manoj’s suggestion, the song “Khaike Paan Banaras Waala” was added as an after thought. The film was released without the usual ballyhoo. After a week the film was completely going unnoticed and was virtually written off. Then it suddenly took off as the song “Khaike” became a sensational rage and the movie also became a huge hit. With profits from the movie, Irani’s widow was able to settle all her debts.

Sometime back I was in a concert show; I believe it was Amit Kumar’s. During the show he recited the story of how the song “Khaike” came about. The music director duo was ready to record the song and Kishoreda arrived to sing. He tried a few times to sing the song and wasn’t too happy the way it was going, so he refused to go ahead with the recording. Anandji had an idea. He sent someone out to bring some of the best Benaras paans available. When the paans arrived, Kishoreda sprang to his feet, took a couple and started eating them. While still eating the paans, he told KA that he was ready to sing. The song was recorded without any further hitch. I guess behind every classic song there is a story to tell…

The movie won several Filmfare awards including the Best Actor for Amitabh, the Best Female Playback Singer for Asha for the song “Yeh Mera Dil”, and the Best Male Playback Singer for Kishoreda for “Khaike Paan Banaras Waala”.

In 2005, the singing group “Black Eyed Peas” used a sample of the song from this movie, “Yeh Mera Dil”, for one of their hit songs. That song fetched them a Grammy. Broadcast Music Incorporate (BMI) of USA rewarded KA with their award for being the source for the Grammy winner.

“Don” was made into several languages including many times in Hindi. The first Telugu version was called “Yugandhar”.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all songs from the film. The second post contains some specials and a few instrumentals of the songs from this album.

Now for the songs in the first post...

In this post I am uploading a couple of specials. The song "Khaike Paan" has a real brief introduction by Kishoreda himself. This was taken from the album "Legends: Kishore Kumar - The Versatile Genius (CD 5)". Another special song I am uploading is that of "Yeh Mera Dil". This has a real nice introduction by Kalyanji who talks fondly about Asha's singing abilities. This one is taken from the album "Legends: Asha Bhosle - The Enchantress (CD 5)".

I am also uploading some of the instrumentals of the songs from this popular album.

(Majrooh) Baaz (1953)

Guru Dutt wrote the story, screenplay, and directed this film about pirates and high sea adventure. He also was in the movie, his first appearance as an actor. Even though he was the hero of the film, it was all Geeta Bali. She in the title role had more heroics than anyone else in the film and was simply magnificent.

This was a third directorial venture for Guru. He made his debut as a director with his friend Dev Anand’s smashing “Baazi” in 1951. It was followed by another Dev starrer in 1952, “Jaal”. The other commonalities of these two films, besides Dev and Guru, they also had Geeta Bali in both of them. SD Burman was their music director. Sahir Ludhianvi wrote lyrics for both the films.

With the success he enjoyed with his first two films, Guru was trying to come up with a “different” film. Geeta Bali’s sister was in the marketplace to produce a movie. When Guru became available he was contracted to make the film. The movie finally ended up with three co-producers; Geeta Bali’s sister, her husband, and Guru himself. For its music, Guru decided to sign O.P. Nayyar as the music director. Majrooh wrote the lyrics. Guru had three assistant directors; Raj Khosla, Atma Ram, and Niranjan.

All said and done when the movie was finished and released it proved to be a financial disaster. Geeta Bali’s sister lost a fortune. So did Guru. The friendship between Bali and Dutt strained. The only outstanding thing that emerged from the film was its ever so fresh and lilting music. OP was simply magnificent.

The financial debacle of the film had some ramifications in Guru’s life. Looking for some stability before he can stand back on his own legs, he pressed on the playback singer Geeta Roy, who was more successful and financially secure than him, with whom he was in love with to marry him. In late May of 1953 Geetaji and Guru were married.

In this album, Geetaji dominates with six beautiful solos. One of the solos has three different parts to it. Here are these songs and others from this lovely album…

(Shailendra) Sanskar (1952)

This was Mumtaz's very first movie appearance. One of the stars of this movie was Shashi Kapoor, himself a relatively newcomer, as a boy actor. Many years later when Mumtaz was struggling as an actress and was getting parts only in B-grade movies, someone offered her a role to play heroine opposite Shashi Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor found this objectionable. He vehemently protested saying that he doesn't want to act with some B-grade movie actress. Eventually her perseverance paid off and Mumtaz hit it big. Shashi was now willing to act with her. They were together in "Prem Kahani" and "Chor Machaye Shor". Let's hand an F grade to Shashi for this crummy attitude towards his fellow professionals. Talking about hypocrisy...

(Javed Akhtar) Trishul (1978)

Salim & Javed have recycled this story many times where an abandoned child is raised by his mother to grow up to get even with his estranged father. Yash Chopra himself directed several movies based on the same story. Besides the familiar theme, most of these movies also had almost the same stars. This movie was a huge hit. Yet this was one of the inferior works of everyone involved.

The team of Khayyam & Sahir was back once again for this movie. Even though results were not as spectacular as before when they pooled their talents together for "Kabhi Kabhie (1976)", the songs and music of this film are actually not that bad. One of our great and talented singers Yesudasji joins Kishoreda and Lataji in various songs in this film. He has three songs.

Interestingly, Waheeda who played wife of Amitabh in their previous outing in "Kabhi Kabhie" only two years earlier stars here as Amitabh's mother who eventually incites and inspires her son to avenge the wrong doing done by his father.

I am uploading songs from this film from an original soundtrack album below...

(Majrooh) Daaera (1953)

The story of “Daaera” revolves around a very young woman (played by Meena Kumari who was barely 19 at that time) tending to an ailing husband (played by Kumar) who is old enough to be her grandfather. Kamaal Amrohi (see his attached picture below), of “Mahal (1949)” and “Pakeezah (1972)” fame, who directed the movie, was married to Meenaji during this time. He was already married but Meenaji fell in love him during one of her shootings and married him in 1952. He was at least14 years senior to her.

The movie from the outset is very gloomy. Meenaji’s character never leaves the place she is in. Either she is taking care of her husband in one room or she is sleeping in the attached terrace and gazing the sky’s enormous vacuum. There are only few characters in the film that come and go. There is a doctor who pays an occasional visit to the patient. Next to the terrace there is another woman (Roopkala) who is hiding away from her own sad story. Then there is the landlady (Pratima Devi) who rented the house to the “odd” couple. She has a son (Nasir Khan) who along with rest in the family mistakenly thinks that Meena is the daughter of the old man and falls in love with her.

Amidst this story of darkness filled with gloom and eventual doom, one thing that stands out as a bright spot is its music. The songs composed by Jamal Sen are simply outstanding. More on Jamal Senji below. Beautiful lyrics for these songs were written by Kaif Bhopali and Majrooh Sultanpuri. The standout singer of the album is Mubarak Begum. She has three beautiful solos and a duet with Rafi Saab. Begum Saab is simply superb in these songs. I wonder why she never got her proper due. There are also three beautiful songs by Talatji in his own inimitable style that deeply touches heart.

A word about Jamal Senji. Jamal Sen was a descendant of Tansen and a rich lineage of proficient musicians preceding him in his family. He himself was a singer, dancer, poet, and was a master of many musical instruments including dholak, pakhawaj, and tabla. He worked many years under Master Ghulam Haider until the latter migrated to Pakistan after the partition. He finally got a break in Kidar Sharma’s “Shokhiyan” in 1951 as a full-fledged music director. The music of the film was a roaring success. It was followed by “Daaera”. The movie flopped but its music stood out. Uncompromising and proud of his lineage, Sen never was co-operative. This slowly alienated him among the film folks. He slowly drifted away from memories. In the end he died in sheer poverty, isolated, unsung, unwanted, and uncared for.

More about the songs from this film. The song “Aa Bhi Jaa” appears many times in the movie as the first two stanzas are repeated several times. Also the lovely duet “Devta Tum Ho” appears four times, each time with different lines. I took most of the songs from a DVD whose soundtrack was simply awful and the audio quality was uneven. I tried to clean the songs the best I could and the final result is not as bad as it sounds. For example, the song “Aa Bhi Jaa” starts with a lot of noise, about 30 seconds of music. Then when the vocals come the sound becomes crispier. I have a CD version of this (about a minute shorter) available. I will be happy to upload this if anyone is interested. Another note. The song “Aansoo Toh Nahin” in the DVD is 4 min 27 secs long. This is exactly identical to the CD version I am uploading here but that is nearly shorter by 70 seconds. Repeated listening of both versions didn’t offer any clue where the differences lie. If anyone is interested in the DVD version, I will be happy to upload this as well.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs…

(Shakeel) Jan Pahchan (1950)

Most of the following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings...

Here is another Nargis-Raj starrer that had similar theme like Raj's maiden directorial venture "Aag (1948)". He repeated the same theme again with "Satyam Sivam Sundaram" made in 1978. Ramanand Sagar who made his debut with Raj's "Barsaat" in 1949 for which he wrote its story, screenplay, and dialogues is at the helm here writing the screenplay and dialogues for “Jan Pahchan”. But the real story here is neither about Nargis & Raj nor Sagar. It is about the music of this movie.

Khemchand Prakash (his picture attached), who made his debut when he was 21 as a music director in 1939 with "Ghazi Salahuddin" was just coming back from his greatest triumph "Mahal", made in 1949. The movie catapulted Lata Mangeshkar to fame and fortune. Unfortunately Prakashji passed away while composing music for "Jan Pahchan". He was barely 42. In his brief stint of 11 plus years of professional career he composed music for 34 films. Manna Dey took over after Prakashji's death to complete the music directorial duties of "Jan Pahchan".

Besides turning around Lataji's career, Prakashji was also responsible for giving Kishoreda his initial break in the movie "Ziddi" made in 1948 with the solo song "Marne Ki Duaayen".

Every song in this album is an absolute beauty. Here Geetaji is at her best singing five soul stirring solos and a beautiful romantic melody with Talat Saab. I haven't heard many of Dasgupta's songs, but both of his solos are also fine listening. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts.

Here are the songs in the first post…

(Javed Akhtar) Kaala Patthar (1979)

This movie came from Yash Chopra's house. Its story was written by Salim & Javed team. It was loosely based on Joseph Conrad's serial "Lord Jim" that was published starting in 1899 in Britain's Blackwood Magazine. Later it was published as a book with the same title. In 1965, Richard Brooks made it into a movie with the same name where Peter O'Toole played the title role of a tormented soul who was trying to come to terms with his past for the serious error of neglect he committed earlier in his life that resulted in the loss of several lives.

Interestingly, the great Salil Chowdhury provided the background music for the film. The songs were composed by Rajesh Roshan. It is interesting to know how this came about as the practice of splitting music duties like in this film was not as prevalent in 70's and 80's as it is today.

I am uploading songs from this film in two back-to-back posts. Here are the songs in the first post...

This was the first movie Raj produced but did not direct that was a commercial failure. At least his "Aag (1948)" was an artistic triumph even though it did not pan out financially. After garnering unprecedented successes he enjoyed with his earlier movies, "Barsaat (1949)" and "Awaara (1951)", the failure of "Aah" was a big downer for Raj. Bunny Reuben, who was a close friend of Raj, writes in Raj’s biography how Raj recalled his "Aah" experience. Raj went and saw the movie on the first day in the Opera House in Bombay and could tell from the way the audience reacted that this movie was going to be a flop. Based on this he decided to revise its ending from tragedy to a somewhat neutral ending where the hero's life is "spared" and is reunited with his sweetheart for eventuality they were to face together. The DVDs that are available out today have this revised version.

If one examines Raj's own home production movies until this point, one key trend stands out. In all these movies one of the key characters either dies or suffers a traumatic experience. In "Aag" this is shown as the disfigurement of the hero. In "Barsaat" there is a death (Nimmi's). In "Awaara" the hero is imprisoned for life. In the original version of "Aah" the hero dies. Later on this also manifests in several of his other movies.

The story of "Aah" was written by Inder Raj Anand. But nearly final 30 minutes of the movie of the original version was a direct lift from Barua's Devdas (with K.L. Saigal), made in 1935. Here we see the hero traveling in a train with his servant, then using a horse carriage to go to the bride’s place on her wedding night, and eventual death right in front of her bungalow as the wedding procession passes by unaware of his dead body. By the way the horse carriage driver was played by Mukesh singing that famous song “Chhoti Si Zindagani”.

I am uploading all of the songs from this movie in back-to-back two posts. All songs of the movie are from an original soundtrack album CD. I am uploading a special and also an extended version of the song "Jhanan Jhanan". Unfortunately, its quality is not that good. This song is by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you.

The songs of "Aah", like most of Shankar-Jaikishan's earlier movies, made history. Each of the song was a major hit. Even though they all are marvelous, one song is a standout. Lataji's "Yeh Shaam Ki Tanhayian" is one of my all-time favorites. I probably heard this zillion times yet I never get tired of it. The sweetness, the melancholy, and the longing were superbly executed in an unforgettable way by Lataji to Shailendra's rich lyrics. This song stays in your heart forever. This is truly an ageless classic masterpiece.

Now for details of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves...

(Shakeel) Pardes (1950)

This movie was directed by M. Sadiq who later directed Guru Dutt’s famous movie on friendship and love “Chaudhvin ka Chand” in 1960. Guru surprised everyone when he elected Sadiq, who of late hasn’t done much good commercially, to direct his movie. This was soon after the debacle Guru suffered with his classic “Kaagaz ke Phool” in 1959, his last directorial effort. But after seeing this movie, “Pardes”, I can see why Guru went for Sadiq. “Pardes” also at its heart was based on the theme of friendship and love. This may have given another reason to Guru to have Sadiq handle the directorial duties of his film “Chaudhvin ka Chand”.

Incidentally, Madhubala’s younger sister Chanchal was introduced in this movie in a small and insignificant role.

Here are the songs from this film…

(Anand Bakshi) Mehlon Ke Khwab (1960)

Madhubala produced this film that starred herself, her sister Chanchal in a major role, and her husband Kishore Kumar. Interestingly Kishoreda was paired with Chanchal in the film whereas Madhubala’s love interest was Pradeep Kumar. But Kumar only had a very limited role. Even Madhubala’s role was also somewhat limited. She gave her sister Chanchal most of the screen time.

In this film, one can easily detect that something was wrong with Madhubala’s health. She looked very pale. The health might have been a compelling reason why Chanchal garnered so much of screen time. Madhubala’s health became so bad that things took turn for worse for her. While shooting the film Madhubala collapsed and fainted. With her congenital heart problem playing havoc with her health, she was flown to England for treatment. The movie was finished with Chanchal stepping in for her sister.

Most of the songs in this film are good. Their quality is variable ranging from fair to decent. Please note that the song “Gar Tum” has some skips between 2:20 and 3:00. Also, the song “Yeh Hai” between 2:10 and 2:45.

Here are the songs from this album…

(Javed Akhtar) Shaan (1980)

Ramesh Sippy of "Sholay (1975)" fame directed this multi-starrer based on James Bond films. The problem here is that whereas Bond films generally have only one super hero this film had too many of them. Character actor Kharbanda's interpretation of the villain was also a big let down. However, the movie boasted several good songs. I will upload them in two back-to-back posts.

Here is the first set...
