This is a great news, a fitting tribute to the living legend Shamshad ji. Long Live the melody Queen!

Any one knows the details about this book? Publisher, ISBN, price etc?

Thanks
Parag

Forgotten Notes Of A Nightingale
Posted On Thursday, September 25, 2008
Retired professor and businessman Chandrakant Mohanlal brings to you an informative book introducing on the life of the legendary playback singer Shamshad Begum and her contribution to world of music, finds out Irene Fernandes
Irene Fernandes

Chandrakant Mohanlal with his book Khanakti Awaaz- Shamshad Begum

Seated within the comforts of his quiet abode, Chandrakant Mohanlal, who has written a book on Shamshad Begum, is a satisfied man. exclaims. “Shamshad Begum was the Lata of the 1940s musical era. She deserves more than just remixes.” The 77-year-old retired professor and businessman is an example for those who dare to follow their dreams, come what may. Seven years ago, Mohanlal decided to dedicate a book to the nightingale of yesteryears and give her the due respect and recognition through his work. And rightly so in early August this year, ‘Khanakti Aawaaz-Shamshad Begum’ was published.

The 350-page book consists of a comprehensive database of over 1,600 songs in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and regional languages sung by Shamshad Begum. A brief biography of the singer has also been compiled from various sources and interviews with Shamshad Begum and her relatives. “Shamshad Begum is reserved as a person. She has always stayed away from media attention. Though I have met her personally four to five times, she still prefers to keep her life private. So I had to speak to most of her relatives to know more about this talented singer,” adds Mohanlal.

Priced at Rs 850, the book is bilingual in Hindi and English and this, too, is done for a purpose. “Shamshad’s songs are known today by their remixes. Born and brought up in Pakistan, a lot of her life needs to be deciphered along those lines. Hence, this was done to accommodate the not-so versatile Hindi music lover to fully understand the real Shamshad.”

A recent picture of the 90-year-old Shamshad Begum
This is just a tip of the iceberg of effort that was put by Mohanlal for his book. He travelled all the way to Pakistan to research on the minute details of her life, as well as gathered rare pictures of her and the various artistes of the film industry who are related to her. He has made several rounds of Chor Bazaar where he managed to gather most of his book material.

Known to stay in obscurity and away from publicity, Shamshad was famous for her melodious nasal voice, which soon found its place in the hearts of musical directors like Naushad Ali and O P Nayyar. Inspite of her celebrating her 90th birthday earlier this year, her aversion to media has given rise to a few misunderstanding reports about her death. To this Mohanlal responds, “I want the government to honour her with the Bharat Ratna or the Padma Vibhushan for her contribution to the music industry. It’s been long due and I hope through this book, my efforts will convey this message.”

Posting interview which she gave after getting the award:-

One of Bollywood's oldest playback singers, who's delivered countless hits through the years has finally been honoured.

We're talking of the Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon singer Shamshad Begum and the award she's received is the Padma Bhushan.

According to the 90-years-old singer, "I am really grateful that I have got this award. It is by God's grace that I have received this honour at this age."

Whether it was the innocent teasing in Kahin Pe Nigahein in the 1956 film CID or the hilarious Kajra Mohabbat Wala in the 1968 movie Kismat, Shamshad begum's voice became inseperable from the heroines in the 50s.

It was Shamshad Begum's sharp voice that made maestros like OP Nayyar and Naushad Ali recognise her talent. Her distinctive voice kept her in the limelight despite other biggies like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

"When people work hard and sing there's a lot of competition. But I wasn't scared of competition," says Shamshad.

On being asked as to what the veteran artist think of modern-day music, Shamshad Begum says, "Youngsters today are singing very well. I enjoy listening to them."
