Pankaj Mullick was born on 20th April 1904 at Calcutta, India. Pankaj Mullick was son of Manimohan Mullick who had a great interest in traditional music, and would invite eminent singers and instrumentalists to perform during religious festivals.

Born in a middle class Bengali family, it was here that Pankaj Mullick drew inspiration from classical Hindustani music. From a very early age, he decided that his vocation would be music, and though enrolled in college, he did not pursue higher education. After completing his college studies he became a student of Durgadas Banerjee. Later, he joined Dinendra Nath Tagore for learning music. His first record was released by the Videophone Company in the year 1926.

Pankaj Mullick was lucky to be introduced to the Tagore family, which was to have an everlasting influence upon him. Rabindra Sangeet became his forte, and he is the only man who has tuned a Rabindranath poem to music, 'Diner Seshey, Ghoomer Deshey' with the great poet's total approval. The approval of the great poet came to Pankaj after endless numbers of hours of waiting on him, and the story has it that..

.. it was for a college function that Pankaj had approached the great poet to have his permission to perform one of his poetries, to which Rabindranath Tagore asked him to sing out the composition that he had in mind. It was after hearing his composition that Rabindranath was so very overcome with the tune that he granted him a total approval for all his poetries. bow.gif

Thus was through Pankaj Mullick's songs that Rabindra Sangeet became popular in every Bengali household, even raising great interest among Western music connoisseurs.

He received Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1972, by President Hon.Sri V.V.Giri

Friends,
Pankaj Mullick regarded the balance and equanimity of the mind as his best asset, providing him with status as a human being and an artiste. Pankaj Mullick enjoyed a very close relationship with AIR (All India Radio) since its very inception in 1928, then a private broadcasting organization. For very many years, his Sunday music lessons had thousands of listeners, specially among young girls. It was at his initiative that the use of the tabla was introduced to keep rhythm for Rabindra Sangeet, which the poet had not previously adopted.

Pankaj Mullick's music composition held a unique position right from the early thirties to the present day, maintaining an unfailing popularity for both young and old. Mullick also brought the concept of the 'tonga song' to the Indian screen for the first time with the immortal ‘Piya Milan Ko Jaana’.

Mullick first joined Calcutta's famous New Theatre's where he trained and conducted rehearsals for artists like K C Dey and Saigal. His first break was Yahudi Ki Ladki (1933). Here, he shared the credits with R C Boral. Later he worked with R. C. Boral for P C Barua's legendary tragedy, Devdas (1935), where Saigal rendered ‘Dukh Ke Din Ab Beetat Nahin’. Their other joint hits included Barua's Maya and Grihadah (both 1936), Hem Chunder's Karodpati (1936) and Nitin Bose's President (1937).

Here's another, rarely heard, 'Kapala Kundala' number of Pankaj Mullick:

[attachmentid=88495]

Pankaj Mullick, along with K.C.Dey, Surendra and K.L.Saigal - and, to some extent, Arun Kumar - were the singing greats of the '30s and '40s. Yet, barring K.L.Saigal, who hears of the others today?

Good to know our singing ancients are being rescuscitated.

Though Pankaj Mullick Sahab was not really an actor, even though appearing in some six or seven films, his first experience was in a small role in Chashar Meye. It is interesting to note that when this silent film was being exhibited at Calcutta, Pankaj Mullick would conduct his orchestra to provide background music. Pankaj Mullick and R. C. Boral supplemented each other on many occasions whilst composing music for New Theatres' films. One of the Pankaj Mullick's most notable scores was for Mukti in which director P.C. Barua had assigned him a role.

Dear USR

Sincere thanks for reviving the thread of the immortal Pankaj Mullick. Along with R.C.Boral and Timir Baran, the two other stalwarts of New Theatres, Pankaj Babu raised film music, both Bengali and Hindi, to lofty heights that it has never achieved since. Pankaj Babu brought out Rabindra Sangeet from the confines of Shantiniketan and introduced it to rest of the nation, for which the nation shall remain eternally grateful to him. Without the efforts of Raichand Boral and Pankaj Babu, the nation would have perhaps remained oblivious to the golden voice of Kundanlal Saigal.

Apart from the musical master-pieces listed by you, Pankaj Da also created several outstanding non film songs. Who can ever forget Terey Mandir Ka Hoon Deepak Jal Raha, Yeh Raatein Yeh Mausam, Pran Chahen Nain Na Chahen, Maine Aaj Piya Hothhon Ka Pyala, Merey Hathhile Shyam, Main Rota Hoon Mut Manaa Karo, Ho Gaya Dil Aur Aankh Mein Jhagda, Na Kar Itna Pyar Panchhi, Prem Bel Mein Phool Na Patte, Jisey Meri Yaad Na Aaye, Yaad Aaye Ki Na Aaye Tumhari, and many others.

A singer and composer par excellence, Pankaj Da inspired a generation of music composers, Kamal Dasgupta, Hemant Kumar and Sachin Dev Burman, among others who followed in his footsteps.

Truly a titan among music composers.

Thanks USR once again for bringing back the memory of those forgotten melodies.

Prabhakar Sahab

Your appreciation is very valuable for me, thankyou.

Friends,

Living Legend Lata Ji has told number of times that she couldn't sing like Sehgal Sahab. 'Bhav' in song was itroduced by Sehgal Sahab before that songs were just'still' songs.

Pankaj Mullick Sahab was also responsible for bringing down the pitch of Saigal's voice and toning its attractive sonorous quality.

When Saigal came to Pankaj Mullick's music room to sing the classical number Karoon Kya Aas Niraas Bhaye, he was totally drunk. Saigal tried singing but just couldn't get it right even after 15 takes. Pankaj Mullic was so furious that he slapped Saigal, who started crying like a child repeating, "You hit me, you hit me". To which Pankaj Mullick replied "Of course, I did. You call yourself a singer and can't sing even one line straight." Saigal felt so humiliated that he sang the song with such a vengeance that it was immediately okayed.

Friends, we are so lucky that we have immortal 'Yaaden' in our memory of such high class People bow.gif bow.gif .
