Jaidev, The S.D. Burman Traditionalist

Jaidev Verma, popularly known as Jaidev, started his film career as an actor. But he had strong musical training and wanted to compose music. S.D. Burman gave him the opportunity to work with him as his assistant in 1951. Chetan Anand recognized the talent of Jaidev and gave him his first major break by assigning him to be a music director for his movie “Joru Ka Bhai” in 1955. Music for this movie was a success. Encouraged, Chetan Anand gave Jaidevji another opportunity for his next movie “Anjali” in 1957. The songs for this movie also became popular. But not until Dev Anand signed him to provide music for his film “Hum Dono”, Jaidev’s name, inspite of some successful movies, remained obscure. But songs of “Hum Dono” became a rage and movie was a big hit for Dev Saab and for Jaidev ji as well.

Surprisingly, inspite of string of successes he enjoyed with his movies, Jaidevji never got into the so called “big league” music director brackets. This may be partly because his music had so much influence of SD. Whereas RD blazed himself new trails even though he was also a long time assistant to SD, Jaidev ji remained close to providing Burmanesque style music. In the life span of little over 30 years in the film industry as a music director, Jaidevji composed music for some 40+ movies. During that span he won four Sur Singar Samsad awards. He also was a recepient of Lata Mangeshkar award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh. He won three National awards as the best music director for “Reshma Aur Shera (1971)”, “Gaman (1979)”, and “Ankahee (1984)”. Such an honor nobody ever received until recently A.R. Rahman was able to accomplish it.

Inspite of all the accolades and some really beautiful music created, Jaidev remained aloof and distant from the luminous filmworld and died in very poor health.

In the next few weeks I will try to capture some of the music Jaidevji created through these columns. I have some of his original album CDs and will upload from these.

Alaap (1977)

This movie was produced and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It had the popular lead pair of Rekha and Amitabh. But like most of Hrishida's movies this was a pretty serious movie with some melodious music. Neither Rafi Saab nor Kishore da are here. It is Madhurani, Faiyyaz, Dilraj Kaur, Bhupinder, and Yesudas. It is so refreshing to listen to some unfamiliar voices. Of course Lataji is also here.

All songs are done in semiclassical mode. Harbans Rai Bachchan and Rahi Masoom Reza penned the lyrics. Here are the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Dooriyan (1979)

Here is another album where there are only four songs. There are couple of duets with Anuradha Paudwal and Bhupinderji that are just great. Anuradhaji's liltingly sweet voice complimented with sleepy voice of Bhupinderji these songs seem to be so different that one would like to listen to them over and over again. This movie paired beautiful and talented Sharmila Tagore with that great actor Uttam Kumar.

Here are the details of these four songs and the songs themselves ...

Ek Hans Ka Joda (1975)

Here is another album by Jaidevji that has only few songs. There are five songs in this movie but my album had only four of them. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below. The solo by Kishoreda is a famous one, "Saathi Milte Hain." Also, Ashaji's song "Mere Dil Mein" is a nice one.

Now for a description of the songs and songs themselves ...

Gaman (1978)

Here is another one of those "art" movies it seems like Jaidevji contracted to provide music for. Even the singers are different. Ever heard of Hira Devi Mishra? In 1978, probably not many people heard of Hariharan either. Suresh Wadkar, popular during 70's, has a great solo in "Seene Mein Jalan."

This movie starred that late great actress Smita Patil. She showed so much promise in the few movies she appeared in. It was so unfortunate that she died that young. By the way, Nana Patekar was introduced in this movie. This movie was directed by Muzaffar Ali who also directed the original "Umrao Jaan" starring Rekha.

There are six songs in this movie but I only have five of them. Some of them were contributed by the members of this Forum. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below. If anyone of you have, please share with us. Now details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Thanks for one more excellent album and the thread on Jaidev.
Your choices and quality are very good that I always eagerly look forward to your posts.

From what I recollect, the line 'Arre Pathik Girdhaari' is the mukhda of 'Aaja Sanwariyaa' song by Hiradevi Mishra.

The Genius Of Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan (1994)

'Madhushala' is a masterpiece in Hindi literature. Its beauty stems from the richness of its lyrics. Reading these verses is like having a fine glass of wine with someone you are in deeply love with. It clouds your thoughts and you can't help but completely overwhelmed by its sheer elegance and in the process lose control of yourself.

This poetry becomes even more intoxicating when it is recited by great singer like Manna Dey to the accompaniment of Jaidevji's music. Then there is resonating voice of Amitabh Bachchan echoing through the depths of these great poems.

Now for the details of these songs and songs themselves ...

Gharonda (1977)

Here is another so called "art" film. Gharonda boasted good story, fine acting, great music, and fetching lyrics, and tantalizingly new voice in Runa Laila. All these ingredients added up and made the movie a success. Apart from Runa Laila's voice there was Bhupinder singing some beautiful songs in his sleepy deep voice. They all fit together so nicely.

The movie was nominated for several Filmfare awards; best flm, best director, best actress, best supporting actor, best story, and best lyrics. It won Shreeram Lagoo best supporting actor award and Gulzar best lyricist for "Do Deewane Shehar Mein" song. Jaidev's excellent music even though became very popular went unnoticed during nominations.

The extended version of the song "Ek Akela Is Shehar Mein" has an injtroduction by Gulzarji. Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Hum Dono (1961)

Here is a beautiful album from the inimitable Jaidevji. Eventhough Jaidevji has provided music for nearly 40 films, everyone seem to remember him because of this album. It may be because of the richness if its lyrics, or sweetness of its music, or song rendering by the principals Ashaji, Lataji, and Rafi Saab.

This movie was directed by Amar Jeet, a regular with Nav Ketan, and Dev's friend and personal confidante. Its screenplay and dialogues were written by Vijay Anand.

Laila Majnu (1976)

This movie had the music by the great Madan Mohan. However before completing it he passed away. Jaidevji stepped in and finished it. I am not sure how many songs he composed for this movie but I haven't found breakdown of who provided what. If anyone of the members has this knowledge, please share with us. Irrespective of who provided what, I am including the whole album here.

Laila Majnu was made several times in Hindi and other languages. An earlier version starred Rishi Kapoor's uncle Shammi, then an up and coming star, as Majnu. There are some super songs here tuned to some heartwarming lyrics penned by Sahir Saab.

The extended version of "Likhkar Tera Naam" is courtesy of the members.

I am uploading those. Missing two songs are shown in the table below in red italics. If any of the members have them, please share.

It is interesting to note that Jaidevji utilized the talents of nine different singers for these 11 songs. The title song sung by Manna Dey is his typical superb rendition that only he can do with so much ease.

Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Here a longer version---Kinare Kinare (1963)- Teri Tasveer Bhi Tujh Jaisi (film version)
Lyrics: Bhart Vyas- Music: Jaidev
File format/bitrate/duration: MP3-VBR-192 kbps-4.11 minutes

Thanks for this upload. Is the lyricist Bharat Vyas or Nyaya Sharma?

Cheers,

Mujhe Jeene Do (1963)

This movie was made by Sunil Dutt who broke away from suave roles to play a rugged dacoit, similar to the one he played in "Mother India." It worked. His performance fetched him the best actor award from Filmfare. The movie was every bit a success. It has some of the beautiful lyrics penned by Sahir Saab and several sweet songs composed by Jaidevji. Even today, their freshness lingers.

All the songs are from CD. I am also including a brief version of "Tere Bachpan Ko" with Lataji's commentary from her CD.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Prem Parbat (1973)

Here is an album with only five songs. My CD had only four of them. I am uploading these. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below. If anyone of the mebers has it, please share with us.

What jumped out for me in this album was that Minu Purshottam singing a solo song. I don't believe I have heard her sing any solos before this. So many singers came and gone with so much talent to offer. It seems like we patronized only few of them and stuck with them forever. Minuji deseved better professionally as she has a very decent voice. Anyway, I am attaching a picture of hers below.

Reshma Aur Shera (1971)

Here is another beautiful album from Jaidevji. It is a real winner and boasts several great songs. Especially both songs by Lataji are absolutey beautiful. It has SD imprint all over them. Love 'em. The movie was made by Sunil Dutt in a magnificent scale. It is another "Romeo and Juliet" story and boasted great cast (including up and coming Amitabh Bachchan) and some very good performances, especially never failing Waheedaji.

Parinay (1974)

Here is another "small" film for which Jaidev the music composer's association by now we all should be familiar with. It seems like there are so many of these "small" (low budget and no big star cast) movies that Jaidevji gave music for. Most of the time, these have only few songs. Yet, it is so difficult to obtain these songs or their albums. I probably got about half of his songs. It is the other half I am having problems obtaining. So I am repeating my request here. If someone can point to a good and reliable source where I can find Jaidevji's work, I would highly appreciate it.

This movie has four songs. I am uploading three of them here. As in other albums, Jaidevji uses lesser known talents in some songs with beautiful results. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below.

Earthmusic lists the music director for Manna Da's duet as Manna Dey himself. I don't know whether this is correct or not because the Earthmusic database is helpful but is riddled with so many errors. I wish there was a reliable and better database one can refer to and depend on.

The songs came from various sources. Therefore, their quality is not uniform. Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Ek Thi Reeta (1971)

Here is another movie by Jaidevji where there are several beautiful songs. Sarla Kapoor appears as a singer in three of the songs in this album. In the duet with Manna Dey, her voice uncannily resembles that of Asha. I was completely fooled.

There are 11 songs in this album. I am uploading 9 of them. I do not have the other two. These are shown in red italics in the table below. A request to the Forum members: please share these if you have them.

The song "Hulle Hulla Re" has a male cosinger with Asha. I don't know who it is. Again, I am requesting the Forum members to identify the missing singer's name.

The lyrics for the song "Kahin Haath Hum Se" appears similar to the one written by Shivan Rizvi for O.P. Nayyar in "Dil Aur Mohabbat (1968)". That song was sung by Asha and Mahendra Kapoor: "Haath Aayaa Hai Jab Se".

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

But I do have songs from his other movies that are scattered in various CDs. (These include Aayi Teri Yaad, Aalingan, Anjali, Ankahee, Bhavna, Chand Grahan, Do Boond Pani.) I intened to upload songs from this collection in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, they will not be complete. Ankahee (1984)

Amol Palekar is one of a kind of a film personality. Nobody like him has been in Bombay film world, except may be perhaps Nana Patekar. Where Nana could be hyper, Palekar has always given restrained performances. But Nana is not even close to the versatality of Palekar. Amol Palekar has been a producer (“Ankahee (1984)” is one of them). He has been a story writer (“Paheli (2005)” is an example). He wrote screenplays (“Kairee (2000)” is an example). He directed some offbeat movies (“Ankahee (1984)” is an example). Of course he has given several fine performances in approximately 40 or so movies he acted in (“Ankahee (1984)” again is an example). He won several awards (as a best actor 3 Filmfare awards, six state film awards, special jury award at Frances’ Nantes festival for his Marathi film “Akrit (1981)”, National award for best picture for “Ankahee (1984)”, Grand Prix award for “Daayrah (1996)” at the Festival du Valenciennes in France, and the list goes on and on.

Palekarji also played in several Marathi plays before switching to Hindi movies. Early in his career he started as a painter. A great asset to the film world indeed!

“Ankhaee (1984)” was based on a Marathi play Khanolkar’s “Tasme Namha”. It was a huge hit in Maharashtra. Apart from the honors mentioned earlier, the movie also fetched Jaidevji the National best music award, and for Bhimsen Joshi, the National best singer award. If you hear the songs you will know why. Just beautiful music that lets you forget all the world worries for those moments.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves …

Do Boond Pani (1971)

This album has some beautiful songs. I had some of these from various CDs. Others a friend of mine gave it to me. This friend's source was tape and video. Therefore, I am not particularly proud of the quality. For those of you who would like to go ahead and upload, please use the following as a guideline:

1. "Bani Teri Bidiya" has some 15 to 20 seconds of dialogue in the end. Otherwise the quality is good. I wanted to eliminate thse dialogue but wasn't sure how to do it. May be some of the members can come forward and tell us a way to do this.

2. "Jaa Ri Pawaniya-1". Excellent. Source CD.

3. "Jaa Ri Pawaniya-3" is a juxtaposition of two songs intermixed with 1 min 48 secs of dialogue. The qauality is good. I separated these two songs and listed them separately. The first portion is the song "Jaa Ri Pawaniya-2". The second portion is the song "Peetal Ki Mori-2" by Asha Bhosle and Parveen Sultana. This song came from a CD. If you don't care for the dialogue, don't need to download this. The song portions are repeated in other songs as described here.

4. "Jaa Ri Pawaniya-2" is of very good quality.

5. "Peetal Ki Mori-1" is of excellent quality. Except the song ends abruptly leaving bad taste in your mouth.

If anyone of you have better quality songs for those I mentioned here, you may want to share them with the rest of us.

Earthmusic lists four additional songs also as part of this album. These I do not have. Details of these are given in red italics in the following table. Please share these songs if you happen to have them.

Swarapriya,

Thanks for this album and the thread in general. I didn't download the songs, since I already have this album. I consider Do Boond Pani as one of Jaidev's best compositions.

The missing song 'ek din aisa' is same as 'Peetal Ke Meri Gaagari' Part2. I am not familiar with the third missing song.
Here is one missing. Going by it's singer list, this song appears same as the one labeled 'Sai Naam'.

bhaj rahi jis samay shehanai ..., main geet preet ke gaaungaa - Ambar Kumar, Shrikant Moghe, chorus - Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi (1:51 \ 128)

Thanks for the information. However what I am looking for is a different kind of help. I don't want to clip a portion of the song. That I know how to do. But what I would like to do is keep the music but suppress only the vocals. No clipping here. Can Audacity do this? There are many Karaoke programs out there that apparently do this sort of thing routinely.

Thanks again.

Aalingan (1974)

This album has five songs. I got only three of them that I am uploading here. The missing songs are shown in red italics in the following table. Requesting the Forum members to share these if they have 'em.

Interestingly, the music for the song "Pyaas Thi Phir Bi Takaaza Na Kiya" by Manna Dey is credited to both Jaidevji as well as Sapan Jagmohan ji. I am not sure what is the story there.

Swarapriya,

The audio labeled 'Aayi Teri Yaad' appears to be 'Phir Teri Yaad' song.
I had a similar situation in my collection. In my collection also I used to have two audios labeled 'Aayi Teri Yaad' and 'Phir Teri Yaad'. They both turned out to be two different audios of the same song 'Phir Teri Yaad'.

'phir teri yaad naye deep jalaane aayi, meri duniyaa se andheronko mitaane aayi

Here is an album with only five songs. My CD had only four of them. I am uploading these. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below. If anyone of the mebers has it, please share with us.

What jumped out for me in this album was that Minu Purshottam singing a solo song. I don't believe I have heard her sing any solos before this. So many singers came and gone with so much talent to offer. It seems like we patronized only few of them and stuck with them forever. Minuji deseved better professionally as she has a very decent voice. Anyway, I am attaching a picture of hers below.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Thanks a lot for these songs. I especially love the Yeh Dil aur unki Nigahon ke saaye for its beautiful Jaltarang. The Jal Tarang is a rarely seen instrument in songs. The only other one I can remember is from Jaidev's movie Hum Dono = Main Zindagi Ka Saath nibhata chala gaya. Are there any other songs with the Jaltarang or only Jaidev seems to have used it? I think seniors can tell better on this.

Very good job Swarnapriyaji and others.

I have this song tagged as a duet between Hariharan and Anuradha Paudhwal. Can't remember it's origin.

Bala Main Bairagan Hungi (1993)

This is my last album for this thread unless I happen to get hold of other Jaidevji's albums. This thread was started at Erumji's suggestion and over last several weeks it enjoyed lot of sharing amongst the members of this great Forum of ours. Music always brings people together.

This album is a private one and not a movie. There are twelve songs in this album. All songs were sung by Ashaji. One curious thing about this album is that Jaidevji composed only four of its songs. For rest of the songs, the music was provided by Ashaji's two younger sisters, Usha and Meena Mangeshkar.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Thank you so much, Swarapriyaji for starting and keeping the thread for my sake! Though, I was having many a albums that are uploaded in the thread, but due to laziness, I didn't converted these albums and enjoyed your uploads. Now, as you're almost finished with Jaidev, I'll try to convert and upload the balance albums of Jaidev!! smile.gif

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

The name of the poet is spelled incorrectly. It is Dr. Harivansh Rai Bacchan ( the author of Madhushala amongst others & he was Amitabha's father)

Do Boond Paani (1971)

I am re-uploading these songs on request.

All these songs came from various sources including CD collections and Forum members. Here is a note on "Jaa Ri Pawaniya-3". It is a juxtaposition of two songs intermixed with 1 min 48 secs of dialogue. The song portions are repeated in other songs.

Also another note. Noor Jehan who is a cosinger of the song "Apne Watan" is not the famous Noor Jehan.

Now for a description of the songs and the songs themselves ...

All these songs came from various sources including CD collections and Forum members. Here is a note on "Jaa Ri Pawaniya-3". It is a juxtaposition of two songs intermixed with 1 min 48 secs of dialogue. The song portions are repeated in other songs.

Also another note. Noor Jehan who is a cosinger of the song "Apne Watan" is not the famous Noor Jehan.

Now for a description of the songs and the songs themselves ...

thakssssss a ton.... so very kind of u...

Swarapriya, et al:
Would it be possible for you to repost ALL the songs/albums from Jaidev in the respective sections? Thanks!!!

This thread took months and months of effort to develop and evolve. It is just about not possible to honor your request because it takes a lot of time and effort on an uploader's part. However, you can request for one album at a time giving a little gap between requests, then that can be easily catered for.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Yes, I realised that the songs are there for a month and then purged.... I was looking for
1. Sulag Uthi Dil ki lagi from Kinare Kinare and
2. Ye neer kahan se barase and ye dil aur unki from prem parbat
3. Songs from Chand Grahan
4. Madhur madhur mere deepak from Suranjali
to start off with
Request you to please upload these as a special request. Sorry for the trouble.

I am uploading two ghazals of Asha which had music by Jaidev - Caravan Guzra kiya and Kabhi neki bhi uske jee me gar...

Kinare Kinare (1963)

I am re-uploading this beautiful Jaidev album on request. Most of these songs came from a CD. Couple of them are by the courtesy of the Forum members. Because of the number of songs, I am uploading them in back-to-back posts. Also, I am missing a song shown in red italics in the table below. Please share this if you can.

Now for the first set of songs ...

I too have to agree!

Swarapriya's presentation is impeccable, the audio quality of u/l's consistently excellent - except where noted that the audio is poor and she comprehensively covers the subject she has started, which is always an interesting one.

Prakash,

The songs for Chand Grahan were recorded in the period 1969-71 but the film never got made and even the songs were not released. The soundtrack was finally released in 1997. It included all the Jaidev songs recorded earlier plus new song by Asha Bhosle composed by Santosh Nair.

thanks for clarification, Aditya - I was pretty sure the songs were recorded in the early 70s, going by Mukesh's voice,
