I have the feeling that Rajendra Krishan, an icon among lyricists, if perhaps the most underrated, People discuss Sahir , Shailendra, even Gulzar and Javed, but not this guy whose work spans mpre than 3 decades.

If Mohammed Rafi was the most versatile among all singers, C.Ramchandra was most versatile among all MDs, then Rajinder Krishan (RK) was the most versatile (and prolific too) among all lyric writers. The two other lyric writers who could come close to him were Qamar Jalalabadi and Majrooh Sultanpuri. From late 40s (when his Suno Suno Aye Duniya Waalo brought him instant fame) to late 70s, this genius wrote some of the most simple yet most poignant and philosophical songs, some of the best patriotic songs, some of the best ghazals, some of the best bhajans as well as some of the best ligh romantic and comic songs in Hindi movies. Just to prove this point, let me quote the following examples of some of his memorable movies / songs:

Chaley Jana Nahin Nain Milake and Kitna Haseen Hai Mausam(Light Romantic)
Yeh Zindagi Usi Ki Hai (Intense Romance in part I and poignant, wistful lyrics in part II))
Zameen Chal Rahi and Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi (Philosophy)
Yeh Hawa Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni, Unko Yeh Shikayat Hai and Yun Hasraton Ke Daag (Ghazals)
Jahan Daal Daal Par Sone Ki Chidiya(Are there any better lyrics in praise of Matrubhoomi?)
Brindaban Ka Krishan Kanahiya and Badi Der Bhayi Nandlala (Beautiful bhajans)

RK was the only lyric writer who did not need to form a combo with one or two MDs to become successful. From Anil Biswas, Husnlal Bhagatram and C.Ramchandra to Sajjad Hussain, Hansraj Behl, Roshan and Madan Mohan; From Ravi and Chitragupt to Kalyanji Anandji, Lakshmikant Pyarelal and R.D.Burman; he wrote beautiful lyrics for all the legendary MDs. Even Naushad and Shankar Jaikishin too teamed up with RK in later years.

Truly a versatile genius.

Would like to add S.D.Burman and Salil Chowdhry, O.P.Nayyar and Usha Khanna; to the list of MDs with whom RK teamed up.

About Rajendra Krishna ji, whatever comments (above) have been made by my friends, much much much much more can be added.
I would raise one finger to show only one spot (I think it will shut the mouth of those who says RK was not upto the mark)...

and the one is Film - Jahan-Aara.

Listen to any (damn) song of the film & either the listner will start biting his/her nails or hand will move to pick-up the jam.

cheers!!

And talking of comedy songs also bring us to Padosan. Mere bhole balam, ek chatur naar, etc. are funny but never deviates from the the great usage of the language.

Regards-Archie.

Suffice it to say that without the services of Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Rajendra Krishan, there would not have been a Madan Mohan.. Rajendra Krishan was more than a lyricist. He was also a script and dialogue writer par excellance.

Definitely the best after Shailendra (discounting Sahir)

Rajendra Krishna has always been my most favourite lyricist, may be because I also deeply fancy the music of Chitragupta, Madan Mohan and C. Ramchandra. The fact remains he has penned far more popular and lyrical songs for the Hindi movies spanning a period of almost four decades.

However, very little is known about his personal life. I have never read about his background or even about to which place he belonged. Can Pradeep Israni Ji or someone else throw light on his personal life?

the famous duo Lata - Madan mohan rarely worked without Rajendra Krishna.
and large share of thier popularity goes to him for penning those beautiful songs.

Rajinder Krishan is a genius. IMO he along with Majrooh, Anand Bakshi, Hasrat and Shailendra is the most gifted and versatile lyricist.

Posted by: august Jun 26 2006, 12:34 AM

i suppose rajendra ji kept very low profile in industry.

to my knowledge, his literary works have not been published anywhere.

hasrat saab and majrooh saab were better known among urdu lovers as 'shairs.'

rajendra ji wasnt associated with political movements either like akhtars and aazmi.

1st film where lata-madan-rajendra came together.

Subhash G Deo

He was a punjabi born in Simla in 1919. During my childhood I saw him appearing in Tabassum's programme "Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan". This was a time when he was considered as the most rich writer in the hindi cinema. The reason was that he had won the jackpot worth Rs.46 lakhs in horse racing. The sum was considered as a huge amount during the late seventies. A full article about him has been posted by me here:

Purely from point of view of literay merit, the following songs are among the top songs written by late Rajinder Krishan

1. Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi
2. Beraham Aasman Meri manzil Bata Hai Kahan
3. Zameen Chal Rehi Aasman Chal Raha Hai
4. Yeh Zindagi Usi Ki Hai
5. Aye Jaan-e-Jigar Dil Mein Samaane Aa Ja
6. Yun Hasraton Ke Daag
7. Hum Pyar Mein Jalne Waalon Ko
8. Jahan Daal Daal Par Sone Ki Chidiya
9. Yeh Hawa Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni
10. Sapne Mein Sajan Se Do Baatein

Well actually it is very difficult to limit the choice to 10 songs. how can one ignore Main Peeke Nahi Aaya, Apna Pata Bata De, Mera Qarar Le Ja, Khush Raho Ahl-e-watan, Tera Kaam hai jalna, many others.

Rajinder Krishan was among the most versatile lyric writers in HFM. I am glad that this thread has been revived. I do hope other lyric writers too would be discussed more frequently.

this is lata's 1st solo song with RK's lyrics.

2) baharein phir bhi aayengi magar hum tum juda honge- lahore 1949- shyamsundar

deep lyrical meaning with slow yet heart-capturing rendition.

4) mera dil yeh pukare aaja -- nagin 1954 hemant kumar

5) mera qarar le ja - ashiyana- 1952- madan mohan

1st film where lata-madan-rajendra came together.

6) yun hasratonke daag - adaalat-1958- madan mohan

7) hum pyar mein jalanewalonko-jailor- 1958 madan mohan

8) kadar jane na, mora balam bedardi ji- bhai bhai- 1956- madan mohan

9)gham ki wadi mein khushi ka karavan- saki- 1952 c ramchandra

Irrespective of his status as a lyricist, which I think is very very high in Bollywood, I can vouchsafe that he was one of the most luckiest financially. Now don't ask me how.

Pyala mere hoton par aakar bhi nahin aaya... amazing that there are such few articles on Rajinder Krishan on the web. Love this Talat/CR/RK combo...

Main peeke nahin aaye
Are masti bhari aankhon se
do jaam chura laya

masti meri aankhon mein botal se nahin li hai
saki se nahin maangi chullu si nahin pee hai
behosh nahin phir bhi main host gawan aaya
Main peeke nahin aaya

jeena kise kehte jeekar bhi nahin samjha
Peene ka mazaa kya hai peekar bhi nahin samjha
Pyala mere hoton par aakar bhi nahin aaya...
Main peeke nahin aaya

Apne hi khayalon ko maikhana banaya hai
Toote hue ik dil se paymana banaya hai
Sawan ki ghataon ko aankhon mein chupa laya
Main pee ke nahin aaya...

smile.gif Right.. The Jackpot story is correct. This I remember because I would have been the next winner if he didn't win. Now you can imagine my heartbreak. It's like this:

As you know, there are five races in a Jackpot event and in each race your bet must be the winner in 1st place. Now, there was no winners in two successive Jackpot events. The moneys of two Sundays were carried forward to the third Sunday. It was also declared that the Jackpot amout would not be carried forward further and that the amount would be given irrespective of the fact whether all the five horses come 1st place. That is, even if one were to have four wins he would be eligible.
If my memory is right, Rajinder Krishan bought tickets for Rs. 9000/-, which enabled him to have many choices as the winners. I never used to spend over 20 rupees in an event because Ladyluck can smile on a single ticket. This time too, the winning horse was a fluke. So just a single man won.
The amount was Rs. 70,000/- which was really a huge amount those days. The amount you mentioned is after deduction of income tax.
Well thats my tearful story. How can I forget. This is without prejudice to the parties concerned.

NASIR.
p.s. It was after this event, that they started the Consolation Prizes for the winners of four events out of five. This was 30 per cent.

A forgotten melody, which is a masterpiece
in both aspects, lyrics and composition
-------------------------------------------------------
Lyrics for you:
Film:Payal ki Jhankar

Too aaye na aaye magar jaane vaale teri yaad a a kar rulaaya karegi
jo dekhega rota hai koi akela -2 to khud bhi aansu bahaaya karegi
tu aaye na aaye ...

Jidhar se gaya tu ye raahen hamesha tarasti rahengi teri vaapasi ko
udhar se hava bhi jo aaya karegi -2 tera naam lekar sataaya karegi
too aaye na aaye ...

Jo raaton ko taare ye poochhenge mujhase bata tu bhi kyon raat bhar jaagati hai
kahoongi meri neend bas mein nahi hai -2 ye birahan bahaane banaaya karegi
too aaye na aaye ...

Jahaan meri aankhon ka paani girega teri yaad ke phool khilate rahenge
savere-savere jo aayegi shabanam -2 to dil thaam kar laut jaaya karegi
Too aaye na aaye ...

I'm sorry. On going through my own info above, I found that Rs.70,000/- has been mentioned. By the way, it was Rs. 7,000,000 (Seventy Lakhs) out of which Income tax was deducted and Forty Lakhs (white money) were given to the winner. Believe me, that amount in the late sixties was a huge amount. A First Class Government Servant in India, say, a Sessions Judge at that time was paid only Rs.3,500-/- a month. The salary of the President of India at that time used to be just Rs.10,000/- a month
