You wont believe this Anu. I was going to provide a link to the above mentioned thread and in between got distracted by something happening around. That is why I missed it.

Thanks so much.

As I was chatting with Venkat (SF) earlier, I am myself a person who LOVES the words. And it is sad that the lyricist is the person who gets the least fame out of the success of a great musical.

Nice to see that at least some one is making an effort to bring these great personalities into the limelight.

Cheers
Parag

Thanks Parag!
I'm basically a lyrics person too. I probably won't hear the song often if the lyrics don't appeal me, unless the singing (like that of Rafi sahab) or music is outta this world.

Anupama..Thanks a lot for the link. Amazing..to know that you hailed from the same Alma mater. bow.gif
Though a bit irrelevant, I would like to mention about a Lyricist from my native language..Aathreya ( pen name, just like Sahir ) who has written some of the finest songs about love, languish and longing. He too had an unfulfilled love affair and could never recover from it. Incidentally he is also known to enjoy drink..and often used to write his songs in inebriated condition. What is surprising is in some songs, what Sahir wrote used to reflect in Aathreya's lyrics !! smile.gif
My altime favourites should be from the film ' Shagun '

Tum chale jaaoge parchhaiyan reh jayegi..
Kuch na kuch husn ki..raanayiyaan reh jayegi..

None could it more justice than Rafi Sahab ...Every word of Sahir reaches us through His magnificent voice...Heaven...Heaven.. smile.gif

A link for the documentary on Sahir...on youtube.

Venkat, I've never heard of this poet Aathreya. Please post his one or two poems if possible and available with you.
Talking about similarities or reflection, we can see that Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sahir are very similar in their approach to writing. People say that there is a reflection of Faiz in Sahir's poetry. They both were from the same era. I haven't read too much about Faiz because I find his Urdu difficult. I even bought a book (Urdu-to-English translation by Khwaja Tariq Mahmood) to have a better understanding of his poems. Sahir and Faiz both have written a lot on social realism. Take for instance these two songs. You can find similarities between Faiz & Sahir's poetry.

Zindagi Sirf Mohabbat Nahin Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai
Zulf-o-Rukhsaar Ki Jannat Nahin, Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai
Bhookh Aur Pyaas Ki Maari Hui Iss Duniya Mein
Ishq Hi Ek Haqeeqat Nahin, Kuchh Aur Bhi Hai

Tum Agar Aankh Churaao Toh Yeh Haq Hai Tumko
Maine Tumse Hi Nahin, Sabse Mohabbat Ki Hai!

(Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jaao - Didi 1959, N.Dutta)__________Sahir Ludhianvi
_________________________________________________________________

Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang
Maine Samjha Tha Ke Tu Hai Toh Darkhshan Hai Hyaat
Tera Gham Hai Toh Gham-e-Dehar Ka Jhagdha Kya Hai
Teri Surat Se Hai Aalam Mein Bhaaron Ko Sabaat
Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa Duniya Mein Rakha Kya Hai

Tu Jo Mil Jaaye Toh Taqdeer Nighoohn Ho Jaaye
Yoon Na Tha Maine Faqat Chaha Tha Ke Yoon Ho Jaaye
Aur Bhi Dukh Hain Zamaane Mein Mohabbat Ke Siwa
Rahatein Aur Bhi Hain Vasl Ki Raahat Ke Siwa

Anginat Sadiyon Ke Tareek Bahimana Tilisam
Resham-o-Atlas-o-Kamkhwaab Mein Bunwaaye Hue
Jaan-Ba-Jaan Bikte Hue Koocha-o-Bazaar Mein Jism
Khaak Mein Lithde Hue Khoon Mein Nehlaaye Hue

Laut Jaati Hai Idhar Ko Bhi Nazar Magar Kya Kijiye
Ab Bhi Dilkash Hai Tera Husn Magar Kya Kijiye
Aur Bhi Dukh Hain Zamaane Mein Mohabbat Ke Siwa
Rahatein Aur Bhi Hain Vasl Ki Rahat Ke Siwa_________Faiz Ahmed Faiz

Ask me not, O my beloved, the likes of first love
I meditated and predicted my existence with you
Tied with your lot, I thought, trails of subsistence to be few
Your countenance gives permanence to the world of efflorescence
In the world, not to accept, expect your lotus and hue

If you were around, the fate itself I could surround
It wasn't so, I willed it so, my wish was to confound
There are woes in the world, other than the world of wooing
There are joys in the world, other than love's pursuing

Countless eons span and spawn myriad malevolent superstitions
Clothes in brocade raiment, fibre and silken apparel
In labyrinthine bazaar and alleys, bodies traded and paraded
Soiled in dirt, bathed in blood, to dispel and repel

The eyes get diverted to them, one cannot help eyeing
Though still your beauty is eyeful, in vain it is viewing
There are woes in the world, other than the world of wooing
There are joys in the world, other than love's pursuing
Ask me not, O my beloved, the likes of first love
!____________Translated by Khwaja Tariq Mahmood

Gopal Das Neeraj has written same kind of song too - Aaj Ki Raat Badi Shokh (duet) - how a romantic song turns into a bitter reality of life when Rafi sahab takes over. A lovely duet!

Many thanks for the link of Sahir's documentary film. I watched it a few months ago on youtube. I would like to point out one small mistake - the song (Ek Jhooth Hai Jiska from Jaadu) playing in the background is of Shakeel Badayuni, not Sahir Ludhianvi!

The song that you've mentioned (Tum Chali Jaaogi, Parchhaiyan Reh Jaayengi) is one of my favorites too. There is another song that I like from the same flick - Yeh Raat Bahut Rangeen Sahi! Together Rafi sahab & Sahir Sahab created magic!

Anupama..started out a thread on Aathreya, thanks to you. Ofcourse, couldnt get any lyrics on net...so the translation is wholly mine and to be blamed if ambiguous. smile.gif
Am truly an ignoramus...Doesnt have that gift of vocabulary. It is heartwarming to note that you had the passion to pour over the dictionary. Amazing..
Enjoying every bit of lyrics posted out here.. Thanks again.

And see the greatness, richness and variety in the lyrics of Sahir sahab. For the same film 'Phir Subah Hogi' where he wrote the serious lyrics of 'Chinu arab hamara' he has written this chhed-chhad song between two friends (Rehman : Rafi sahab and Raj Kapoor : Mukesh ji)

Rafi : Jis pyaar mein yeh haal ho
us pyaar se tauba tauba

It is totally absorbing with some rich poetry and great pictures and memorabilia. Thank you Anupama ji for giving us such a refreshing treat. Also my many thanks to all those who have kept this thread buzzing with some informative and thoughtful exchanges.

Thanks parag and SP.
Actually every true music lover will reach a stage where he gets to know the lyrics and appreciates it. But there wont be many places where he can speak out his feelings. Am glad that I found this, thanks to Anupama. And needless to say, your audience / participation makes it all the more lively ! smile.gif

Bazm-e-shaahi mein , garibon ki guzar kya maani ? (bazm-e-shaahi = royal congregation)
sabt jis raah pe ho, satwat-e-shaahi ke nishaan (satwat-e-shaahi = fear of the king )
us pe ulfat bhari roohon ka safar kya maani ?

meri mehboob, pas-e-parda-e-tashâhir-e-wafaa tune
satwat ke nishaanon ko to dekha hota
murda shaahon ke maqaabir_se behalne waali
apne taarik makaanon ko to dekha hota

lekin unke liye tashâhir ka saamaan nahin kyun ki, (tashâhir = advertisement )
woh log bhi, apni tarah muflis the (muflis = poor)

Yeh imaarat-o-maqaabir, yeh faslen, yeh hisaar
mutaaq-ulâhukm shahenshahon ki azmat ke satun
daaman-e-dahar pe, us rang ki gulkaari hain
jisme shaamil hai, tere aur mere ajaad ka khoon

meri mehboob ! unhe bhi to mohabbat hogi
jinki sannaaâi ne bakhshi hai, ise shaql-e-jameel ( sannaaâi = art of a sculptor )

unke pyaaron ke maqaabir rahe, be-naam-o-numood (muqaabir = tombs)
(be-naam-o-numood = unnamed and unmentioned)
aaj tak, un pe, jalaai na kisi ne kindeel (kindeel - lamp )

yeh chamanzaar, yeh Jamuna ka kinara, yeh mahal,
yeh munaqqash dar-o-deewaar, yeh maheraab, yeh taaq
ik shahenshaah ne daulat ka sahaara lekar,
ham garibon ki mohabbat ka udaayaa hai mazaaq !!

Sahir's genius is - for me - summed up in two beautiful Lata songs, one tuned by Madan Mohan and the other by Roshan. The songs are completely different in theme, style, and feel: one slow, romantic, and wistful, the other sharp, poignant, and scalding. The former song is 'chaand maddham hai asamaa.N chup hai' from "Railway Platform"; the latter is "Khudaa-e-baratar terii zamii.n par" from 'Taj Mahal'.

The two songs also share a 'missing link' mystery: the 'Taj Mahal' song is in the film but is not found on any of the audio releases of the film; the 'Railway Platform' song appears in MM-LM compilations but was inexplicably - and cruelly! - left out of the film.

I am first posting the lyrics of "Khudaa-e-baratar". I have the song on tape and had uploaded it on HF long ago. I can upload it again if any members don't have it and want it.

The song is one of the most moving anti-war anthems I have come across in any language (I know - and read poetry in - English, Marathi, Urdu, and Hindi). A lot of the questions he asks are very relevant in today's world. Especially when looking at the world's political overlords, the lament about "unhii.n kaa dil itanaa ta.ng kyu.N hai" hits right home! The play on "zamii.n" in the first line - used first to mean earth and then to mean land - is remarkable. My favourite bits of the song are enclosed within **.

Here is the song, along with a (very) rough translation and the definitions of some of the unusual words.

Khudaa-e-baratar terii zamii.n par zamii.n kii Khaatir ye ja.ng kyo.N hai
har ek fatah-o-zafar ke daaman pe Khuun-e-insaa.N kaa ra.ng kyo.N hai

zamii.n bhii terii hai ham bhii tere, ye milkiyat kaa sawaal kyaa hai
ye qatl-o-Khuu.N kaa rivaaj kyo.N hai, ye rasm-e-ja.ng-o-jadaal kyaa hai
**jinhe.n talab hai jahaan bhar kii unhii.n ka dil itanaa ta.ng kyo.N hai**

Gariib maa.N_o.n shariif bahano.n ko amn-o-izzat kii zi.ndagii de
**jinhe.n ataa kii hai tuune taaqat unhe.n hidaayat kii roshanii de**
saro.n me.n kibr-o-Guruur kyo.N hai, dilo.n ke shiishe pe za.ng kyo.N hai

qazaa ke raste pe jaanewaalo.n ko bach aane kii raah denaa
dilo.n ke gulashan uja.D na jaa_e.n muhabbato.n ko panaah denaa
jahaa.N me.n jashn-e-wafaa ke badale ye jashn-e-tiir-o-tufa.ng kyo.N hai

A rough translation:

Why on your earth, O God, do you allow this warring for the sake of land?
Why does each victory have to be stained by the blood of humans?

This land is yours, and so are we, so whence does the question of property come in?
Why this tradition of killing, of murder, why this custom of battles and wars?
Why do they who wish to own the world have such narrow hearts?

Give the poor mothers and innocent sisters a life of peace and dignity
Those to whom you have given strength, grant them the light of your guidance too
Why are their heads filled with pride and arrogance, why is the mirror of the heart rusted over?

Please allow a path of escape for those who march now to their deaths
Grant your shelter to love, stop the gardens of the heart from being laid waste
Why, instead of celebrating love, do we have this festival of arrows and muskets?

Khudaa-e-baratar: Almighty God
fatah, zafar: Both words mean victory
milkiyat: property, possession;
jadaal: battle
hidaayat: guidance, leading onto the right path
kibr, Guroor: Both words means pride
zang: rust
tafang: musket

Warm regards,
Abhay

Here is the other song I was referring to above. Quite apart from Sahir's fantastic poetry, the song is beautifully tuned and sung: one of the softest songs ever recorded for Hindi films. The hushed music and rendition do perfect justice to Sahir's magical words.

The last words of the poem are especially moving: "aa tere Gam me.n jagatii aa.Nkhe.n *kam se kam ek raat* so jaa_e.N" - kyaa kahane! Hats off, Sahir-saab - what a beautiful way of portraying the intense pain of waiting for the beloved in the gentlest of terms!

chaa.Nd maddham hai asamaa.N chup hai
niind kii god me.n jahaa.N chup hai

duur vaadii me.n duudhiyaa baadal
jhuk ke parbat ko pyaar karate hai.n
dil me.n naakaam hasarate.n lekar
ham teraa intazaar karate hai.n

in bahaaro.n ke saaye me.n aajaa
phir muhabbat jawaa.N rahe na rahe
zindagii tere naamuraado.n par
kal talak meharabaa.n rahe na rahe

roz kii tarah aaj bhii taare
subah kii gard me.n na kho jaa_e.N
aa tere Gam me.n jaagatii aa.Nkhe.n
kam se kam ek raat so jaa_e.N

Great observation, Parag!
This reminds me of the songs from Pyaasa. On one end, Sahir writes the serious and contemplative lyrics of Jinhein Naaz Hai Hind Par Woh Kahan Hai (original poem - Chakley) & Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye Toh Kya Hai, whereas, on the other end he lightens up our mood with a fun and lively song like Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye. And hats off to Rafi Sahab for singing two entirely different moods with great justice. It seems as if two different singers are singing each mood! smile.gif

Venkat, many thanks for this eternal poem - Taj Mahal. Sarcasm was Sahir's forte. You can observe his use of satire in many of his songs.
Sahir wrote Taj Mahal in 1943, without ever seeing the Taj Mahal, and it was published in his first book "Talkhiyaan" in 1945. It was not until almost twenty years after that his poem was used in the movie Ghazal 1964. It is said that this was Sahir's response to his contemporary rival Shakeel Badayuni's Ek Shehanshah Ne Banwa Ke Haseen Taj Mahal from the film Leader 1964 or vice-versa.

Check out these two poems where we get a glimpse of their on going rivalry.

Ae Mohabbat Tere Anjaam Pe Rona Aaya
Jaane Kyon Aaj Tere Naam Pe Rona Aaya

Yoon Toh Har Shaam Ummeedon Mein Guzar Jaati Thi
Aaj Kuchh Baat Hai Jo Shaam Se Rona Aaya

Kabhi Taqdeer Ka Maatam, Kabhi Duniya Ka Gila
Manzil-e-Ishq Mein Har Gaam Pe Rona Aaya

Jab Hua Zikr Zamaane Mein Mohabbat Ka "Shakeel"
Mujhko Apne Dil-e-Nakaam Pe Rona Aaya
_____________Shakeel Badayuni

Kabhi Khud Pe, Kabhi Halaat Pe Rona Aaya
Baat Nikali Toh Har Ek Baat Pe Rona Aaya

Hum Toh Samjhe The Ke Hum Bhool Gaye Hain Unko
Kya Hua Aaj Yeh Kis Baat Pe Rona Aaya

Kis Liye Jeete Hain Hum, Kiske Liye Jeete Hain
Ba-rah Aise Sawalaat Pe Rona Aaya

Kaun Rota Hai Kisi Aur Ki Khatir Ae Dost
Sabko Apni Hi Kisi Baat Pe Rona Aaya

This is a good one Anu. Never noticed this kind of "Artistic rivalry" between Shakil sahab and Sahir sahab.
