(Dilip) Insaniyat (1955)

Here is another one from Gemini Studios and the producer and director Vasan that was a huge hit. Even though it paired for the first time (and for the last time) Dilip and Dev in the same movie, it so happened that this pairing was not the real novelty of the film. Instead, there was a chimp in the movie that had a significant role and it stole the show from both of the thespians. Dilip was fine in his role but Dev was miscast in a swashbuckling role. He clearly was out of his element and the funny costumes he wore didn't do any good for his looks or demeanor. He looked almost like one of the stooges from the famous "Three Stooges" of Hollywood.

As usually is the case with most Gemini films, there are plenty of songs in this film. C. Ramchandra was at the helm of music.. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Ramchandraji who was flying high during this period gave a very disappointing and forgettable score.

As usually the case with most of Gemini movies, this movie was based on the Telugu super hit, "Palletoori Pilla (1951)". Interestingly, the Telugu movie didn't have any monkey as its star. It was purely created for the Hindi version. I will upload a couple of songs from the Telugu version right after I am done with the Hindi songs.

I am uploading all of the songs from the Hindi film in two back-to-back posts. All songs are by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you all. Now for a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...

Palletoori Pilla (1950) - A Telugu Film

Hindi hit "Insaniyat (1955)" was based on this Telugu hit film. This movie is a landmark in the Telugu film industry for several reasons. It was directed by the first time director B.A. Subba Rao who went on to make several great movies in Telugu like Bheeshma, Raju Peda, Chenchu Lakshmi, and others. But it was more significant because it introduced N.T. Rama Rao in the lead for the first time (Dev Anand played this role in Hindi). He appeared in a supporting negative role in L.V. Prasad's "Mana Desham" in 1949, but this was the first film in which he played the lead role. When he was selected to play the role, many expressed concerns about a newcomer playing the lead. Anjali Devi (Bina Rai in Hindi) and Nageshwara Rao (Dilip Kumar in Hindi), both established actors, were already signed to play the other lead roles in the movie. Taapi Chanakya was the assistant director. Chanakya later directed "Ram Aur Shyam (1967)" in Hindi. Adi Narayan Rao, a childhood friend of Subba Rao, composed the music. Narayana Rao composed the award winning music for "Suvarna Sundari (1958)" in Hindi. Rao also helped develop the story that was based on an English play called "Fijaro" by Richard Sherton.

Rama Rao's first take in the film was the scene in which he is slapped by the heroine. Later on in an interview Subba Rao recalls that for the first time hero it was a very difficult shot. They got the scene right after several takes. Apparently, NTR himself fought the bull in one of the action sequences. In spite of the several injuries suffered, he showed up the very next day for the shoot by covering his bandages. NTR became a legend in the Telugu film industry and later became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

I am not sure how many songs are in this film. I was able to secure only two of them that I am uploading here. Two missing ones I know are shown in red italics in the table below. I am requesting members to share if they have any of the missing songs. Thank you.

Now for the two songs I have ...

(Kishore) New Delhi (1956)

Here is one beautiful album from the great Shankar & Jaikishan. It also starred the hot pair of Vyjayanti Mala & Kishore who in several of their previous outings proved to be a winning combination. I have seen this movie recently again and it felt like it was kind of dated. Yet, there is no denying to the fact that it has an endearing story of living peacefully in spite of our differences between our habits and spoken languages, North or South, one caste compared to the other, all told in an entertaining style. The great Rajinder Singh Bedi was responsble for its touching humane story. The net result of all this was that this movie proved to be a crowd pleaser when it was originally released.

The album boasts one great song after another with all solos, six by Lata and three by Kishoreda. All songs were winners with Lata's "Tum Sang" a chartbuster and so were all three of Kishoreda's songs. My favorite from this album is Kishoreda's beauty, "Nakhrewaali". I don't think anyone else can sing such a song except for Kishoreda. Yodelling, inflections of sounds, modulation of the tone, such total control over the voice, Kishoreda was undoubtedly a master of it.

I am uploading all songs from an original soundtrack album in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...
