Memsahib (1956) Here is another Shammi's movie for which there is some great music. This time it is that peerless master, Madan Mohanji. This album by Madan Saab is unusual in the sense that all female songs were sung by Ashaji. Not even a single song by Lataji, his favorite. I am also uploading a second version of the song "Kehta Hai Dil". In this second version, this duet by Ashaji and Talat Saab, Shammi reminisces those days when this song was recorded. But the song is the same as the regular one. Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ... this songs is 128 kbps & mp3 format Kahta_Hey_Dil Rahul Patel

Swarapriya, Thanks a lot for the Chor Bazaar songs. One song, 'Dar-dar ki tokre hain' is often associated with Hoor-e-Arab movie. http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?s=&a...st&p=476581 I don't know the details. It's possible, it was recorded for Chor Bazaar and used in Hoor-e-Arab. Senior members may please clarify. Exon Thanks for the info. Cheers. -S There are many such instances in the past where the same song featured in two movies (sometimes the same tune, lyrics but not the song); obviously the MD was same in either cases. But it is baffling that whenever I heard the song dar dar ki... from 'Hoor-e-Arab' the MD name was announced Ghulam Md. but otherwise it was given as Sardar Mallick. Someone who has seen 78 discs of both films can clarify. --Balaji This post has been edited by balajigade: Sep 1 2008, 10:37 PM |

Rangeen Raatein (1956)
The most notable thing about this movie is that Shammi fell in love with Geeta Bali during its filming that eventually led to their marriage. Geetaji had a cameo role in the movie. She decided to appear because Kidar Sharma was directing it. Sharmaji was the one who introduced Geeta Bali to the movies. Shammi, in the brief span of his professional career by this time already acted with Geeta Bali in two movies; "Miss Coca Cola" and "Coffee House". Geetaji was on a high note of her career at this juncture. Shammi wooed her for several months and secretly married her before announcing it to his parents. Besides Geeta Bali there are two other leading ladies in this movie; Chand Usmani and Mala Sinha. Shammi acted with Chand Usmani earlier in "Jeevan Jyoti" for the same director. Bengali speaking Mala Sinha was new to Hindi movies and could hardly speak Hindi. Geeta Bali took her into her wings and groomed her for her role in this movie. There are eight songs in this movie. All these songs were uploaded recently by Faizel ji. My heartfelt thanks to him for sharing these songs with us. Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ... Swarapriya, Thanks a lot for the Rangeen Raaten album. I was missing several songs from this nice album. I think, in the song 'Main ek shola' one of the singer is Geeta Bali instead of Geeta Dutt. Exon Can any one please verify if this is the case? Parag (Sankla) should be able to tell us about this. Thanks, Swarapriya |

Exon is an expert on identifying the voices of the singers (esp late 40s till 60s as much as I have known him from his posts). Yes, he is right, its Geeta Bali who has sang along with Shamshad ji and Uma Devi. The other song does indeed feature Geeta Dutt, the singer, my idol. Best Regards Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

And if I remember correctly, Geeta Bali played a male role in the film. Its not a role where a woman pretends to be a man and finally reveals her identity, she actually perfromed a male role.
As commented by the veteran Hindi Fim, HFM music (and cricket) expert Shirish Kanekar, this could possibly the only such instance ! Cheers Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

Way back in late 40's, much before 1956 Rangeen Raatein, actress G. Varalakshmi played the character of Prahlada in the Telugu movie "Bhakta Prahlada". She was a grown up woman and couldn't hide her feminine features inspite of the make up worn. It looked so bad that it was almost embarrassing to watch it. It was one of those famous miscasts in Telugu movie history. Cheers, Swarapriya |
