Very much appreciated Praks Bhai for starting this thread.

Usha Khanna-Rafi Sahab combo give very nice and lovely songs indeed.

A lovely topic about a lovely Music Director - almost certainly the best female music director we have had and right up there with the best. She has excellent songs in the 70's also.

It is worth repeating what Rafi Saab said to her - when he noticed some qualm from her about the recording - she was around 20 I believe - something like 'Thumko mujhse nahin seekhna, Usha, mujhko tumse hai seekhna' - 'You don't learn from me, Usha. I (Rafi) have to learn from you'. It shows the respect that Rafi Saab had for no matter how young or new the Composer - and in the case of Usha Khanna, it was well deserved. If anyone watches Saregama, you will see how much respect the yesteryears Music Directors are given - Naushad, O P Nayyar, Anil Biswas etc. were given and Usha Khanna was given the same - although she is not that old - having been only a youngster in the 1950's.

Ushaji would again be classified as a Rafi loyalist, to the core, this again puts her amongst the great in my eyes. She has also to be credited with having the verve to get Rafi Saab to sing for her at such a tender age - on the other hand - she knew then what all Rafians know now - there was only one singer in Bombay, in India, in the Indian Subcontinent, in Asia, in the World who had the capacity to render her songs to perfection.

I also credit Ushaji with giving a wide range of alaaps, spoken words, whistling, emotion (for Rafi Saab) as well as deliightful musical interludes into her songs. All I can say Kaun yeh Mehfil men, Bijli si chamki dil men - Who has come in our midst, sparking electrics in our hearts and Aao pyar karen ka baath chor dijiye - ab to pyar ho gaya.

Dear amooly,

Thank you for this lovely little tribute to Usha. She was indeed not only the best female music director and also among the best within her male contemporaries. It's a shame that she has not been given her due place among the very greatest in Indian Cinema.

Here are some of her very exquisite compositions, all sung by the only one who could do her justice.

Film: Honeymoon
Year: 1973
Track: O Saathi O Saathi
Md: Usha Khanna
Duration: 5:06 min
Bitrate: 128 kps

Film: Hawas
Year: 1974
Track: Teri Galyon Mein
Md: Usha Khanna
Duration: 4:35 min
Bitrate: 128 kps

Great topic !!

Usha Khanna is indeed a very under-rated MD. She is hardy mentioned amongst the greats, but she is full of talent.

For all those years, she let her music do the talking, and she composed many wonderful tunes, very melodious, and as Amooly mentioned, her arrangements were excellent. She doesn't get a lot of credit for the beautiful music she provided in her songs and her violins were very classy.

Also, she had the ability to change with the times. She made her debut in 1959 amidst lethal competition from S-J, OPN, SDB, MM, Roshan etc. and managed to hold her own. She was sometimes influenced by her seniors such as OPN and SJ, however soon she formed a style of her own that was very unique. Once the mid sixties came she was on a roll, and then at the turn of the decade when things were changing, she was right there and added new aspects to her music to keep it fresh, and managed to compete with LP, RDB, KA etc. All through it the melody in her songs remained intact.

Right from 1959 until 1980 she gave Rafi saab many amazing songs. Here is a small tribute from Usha Khanna for those who haven't read it (Amooly mentioned part of it):

"His humility was amazing. I remember that at the recording of one of my Asha-Rafi duets in my first film Dil Deke Dekho, I was not fully satisfied with one part of the song, but was hesitant about telling him. He sensed that and told me, “Usha, tumne humse nahin seekha. Hamein tumse gaana seekhna hai.” He warmly embraced me after recording ‘Tu is tarah se…’ (my last song with him which was for Aap To Aise Na The) and said that I had made a lovely composition. And he sang “Hum aur tum aur yeh sama…”, again from Dil Deke Dekho, which was my first-ever recording."
