I have been meaning to make this thread for a long time and will try to complete it by and by.
I will take up his MD career first.
Not many maybe knowing that He was deputy MD in Khurshid Anwar sahab's first movie Kudmaai (1941-Punjabi)

Recently I came to know from someone who knew him that in his struggle period in late 50s when he wasn't getting much songs he tried to give music to films. Due to the film industry environment against him he decided to give music under a pseudonym Gunjan. This information was given to him by G.M. Durrani himself. The movies were small films and weren't too successful sadly.

He is known to have given music in two stunt films in 1961 under that name:-
1. Kismat Palat Ke Dekh(1961) (Original Name: Zara Palat Ke Dekh)
2. State Express(1961)

List of movies as Assistant MD
1. Kudmaai (1941) (Punjabi) (Assistant to: Khursheed Anwar)
2. Nai Duniya (1942) (Assistant to: Naushad)

List of Movies as MD
1. Kismat Palat Ke Dekh (1961) (Credited As Gunjan)
2. State Express (1961) (Credited As Gunjan)
3. Angoori (1943)
4. Vijay Lakshmi (1943)
5. Bhagya Lakshmi (1944)
6. Dhadkan (1946)

Unfortunate that so little information and songs are available of this great Artist, GM Durrani Sahib. It is on record that Mohd Rafi himself has stated that his idol was GMD... time for some music company to come out with a tribute....

Unfortunate that so little information and songs are available of this great Artist, GM Durrani Sahib. It is on record that Mohd Rafi himself has stated that his idol was GMD... time for some music company to come out with a tribute....
HB..keep up the good work.. smile.gif

Yes, His songs and information is very difficult to get. It looks like Rafi sahab isn't the only singer fan of G.M. Durrani Sahab.

This is what Manna Dey says about his co-singers on page 190-191 in Memories Come Alive, An
Autobiography.

"The male singers I had to initially compete against included Mohammed
Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh and G. M. Durrani. Rafi's renditions were
like an early spring morning with its varied hues and shades and
appealed to me immensely. I had the opportunity of singing quite a few
duets with him and enjoyed the sessions. Talat Mehmood was something
of an aberration in the sense that he seemd to lack perseverance and
abandoned his singing career prematurely for reasons that remain a
mystery. Mukesh was tranquility incarnate. One could not have asked
for a better human being, but it was rumoured that when training him
to sing a number, music directors were hard put to conceal their
impatience. Once he had mastered the song, however, none could find
fault with his rendition. Durrani-ji had a mellifluous voice, but
lacked staying power and failed to survive as a singer. To reach the
heights of success, it is neccessary to be practical as well and this
is where Durrani-ji fell short. I learnt a great deal from his
failure. I realized that when a producer spends a fortune on his film,
he expects everyone in his team to put in his best effort to make it a
success. And putting in one's best meant being ingenious and
innovative, qualities without which an artiste is likely to get lost
in the wilderness. That, precisely, is what happened to Durrani-ji and
I cannot help feeling sorry for the way his career turned out.
"

Looks like we aren't the only ones who's sorry about how G.M. Durrani sahab's career turned out.

Best Regards
Hildebrand
