(Zeenat) Dhund (1973)

Here is a beautiful album. Over the years, Sahir and Ravi combined their talents to give us many unforgettable songs. This movie has only few songs, but most of them are unforgettable. I am also including an extended version of "Jo Yahan". Its quality is not up to par. It was ripped from a DVD that had poor quality audio.

Now for the songs of this nice album ...

One of my favorite films and although there are no Rafisaab songs in this film , i like the title song by the shagird of Rafisaab, Mahendra Kapoor ji.

PLAYBACK SINGING STARTS AND ENDS WITH RAFISAAB. IN TERMS OF QUALITY, CONSISTENCY & VERSATILITY, RAFISAAB IS INFINITE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ALL SINGERS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER HIM.

Guru dutt was a genius, so was Sahir and SD Burman. This is probably the best hindi film made. The best Geeta duet and solo is in this film and my favorite Hemant Kumat song is in the film and my favorite comedian Johny is in this film but all this would be of less signifiance if Rafisaab wold have not sang the majority of songs of this film. As an avid listener, i can say without any hesitation that Guru dutts payasa would not be the same without the monumental singing and vocals of the undisputed king of singing, the one and only Rafisaab. Rafisaab has not only sung like Guru dutt but also spoken like him, this is simply unbelievabe and un achievable.

Salute to these legends.

Hello Suhana Safar ji, you've just about summed up my sentiments about this film. Cheers.

Dear SPji,

You have excelled yourself.
I have always considered Pyaasa to be a milestone among Indian films.
You have packed your write-up, with amazing details.
This is perhaps one of the most informative write-ups about the film, that I have read.
The song compilation, as usual, is top class.
Every song is to be treasured.

Posting this film's songs close to Geetaji's death anniversary is also a very good coincidence.

Looking forward to more.

With best wishes,
suresh

Suresh,

Since you called me "Dear", I took the liberty to address you as "Suresh". I am requesting you to do the same thing next time when you have to address me.

Suresh, this is one of my all time favorite films. It is very close to my heart. I just don't get enough of it. The more you see it the more subtleties are revealed. It is like a fine book of poems, every time you read you realize some new meaning hidden between those flowery words.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Though Mahendra is not in the same league as Rafi Saab, I will admit that chela bhi Chupa Rustom nikla.

SP,

Point taken.

Yes, Pyaasa is truly as multilayered a film as you can ever get.
Every viewing reveals a new nuance or subtlety.
Watching that film on video is a sort of pilgrimage that I undertake once in a few months.
Seeing your post revived those memories once again.

With best regards,
suresh

Swarapriya,
Thanks for this album.
I had looking for the solo of Suman Kalyanpur for a long time.
Overall a fairly competent score.
But Suman K's solo stands out with excellent lyrics.
Thanks once again.

Best regards,
suresh

Thanks Suresh. Also, Mukesh's song stands out as well. But very popular song from this movie was the one Kishore sang, "Guni Jano", a song that was tailor made for showcasing the versatality of talent of Kishoreda.

(Mala Sinha) Ek Shola (1956)

Here is a fine album from Madan Mohan ji. Interestingly, this early film songs sound more like O.P. Nayyarish, at least that was the impression I had. Another interesting thing about this album is that this Madan Mohan musical has no Lata songs in it. Of course the very first film Madan Mohan composed music for, "Aankhen (1950)", didn't have any Lata songs either.

All these songs are by the courtesy of the Forum members. I am still missing one song shown in red italics in the table below.

Now for the songs...

Swarapriya

The song "Chanda se bhi pyara hai" is a duet of Asha ji and Geeta ji. One can see the video here:

Most welcome SP. I downloaded and listened to the song "Jaadugar tune kaisa jaadu" credited to Geeta ji. I believe that this is sung by Asha ji herself. The voice is not of Geeta ji. Request opinions from experts.

The other duet of Geeta ji and Rafi sahab "Hum kala tum white" is a delightful comic number filmed on Uma devi (Tun Tun) and Dhumal. The video is here:

SP,

This film is from 1958. Post 1957 Madan Mohan did compose for a few films O P Nayyar style (at the insistence of the producers, it's said).

In the same year as Ek Shola there were 2-3 other Madan Mohan films that did not feature Lata at all. In all I think there should be at least 25 Madan Mohan films with no Lata at all.

Here's the missing song. I believe that no disc was released for this song. To me it seems like a medley of 2 songs (maybe picturised as a stage show or something)

Mujhe Pyar Ki Lagan - Ek Shola 1958 - Asha Bhosel, Mahendra Kapoor - Madan Mohan - 128 kbps - 08:20

SP,

It must be the most weirdest of coincidences.
Today I came to your thread after hearing the songs of Bank Manager (1959) posted bySukeshji.
After hearing the song of Bank Manager I did get this sneaky feeling that the style is more like OPN.
I saw your post echoing that impression.

I am a die-hard collector of duets & the Rafi - Asha combo was divine, in classic OPN mould.
The Rafi - Geeta duet is another great rib-tickler.

Thanks for a very good album.

Regards,
Suresh
