Shankar Dasgupta sang a handful of filmi songs in the late-40’s early-50’s for top-notch composers like Khemchand Prakash and Anil Biswas before fading out of view. I attach some of his songs. Hearing his beautiful voice, its difficult to understand why he was not as successful as others like Mukesh, Talat, Rafi and Manna Dey.

A few of the songs originated from senior HF Members.

I haven’t been able to get any bio-data on him on the internet. If any member can provide some information about him, that would be great!

Faraaj ji

Many thanks for posting these lovely songs of S D Gupta.

AFAIK, Basant Prakash was the younger brother of the famous composer Khemchand Prakash ji. He composed the song "Aa jaane wafaa aa" from Anarkali sung by Geeta Dutt ji. Later the entire score of Anarkali was done by C Ramchandra ji, but this song was retained in the film.

There are a few more films of Basant Prakash, but as you can guess, not a single film which can be called a musical blockbuster.

Thanks again

Cheers
Parag

Parag Saab

Thanks for the info - I didn't know the family connection. Khemchand Prakash was probably the finest composer of the 1940s and I guess some of the Rajasthani magic rubbed off on his brother (at least as far as this song is concerned).

Mahesh Bhai

Thanks for the kind words and upload. Anil Biswas is always good to listen to. I liked the song - even with the storm effects! Milan had some good songs like Jis Ne Bana Di Bansuri and Gun Gun Bole Bhanwarwa. I'll be waiting for the day you upload the entire album on the Anil Biswas forum!

Waheed Bhai

I uploaded what I had of Shankar Dasgupta. Its rare to find his songs and I think some HF Member is your best bet because nothing else of his seems to be available anywhere on the internet. I'd be just as keen as you to hear the two songs you mention and to find out what happened to prevent him becoming a famous singer.

Kind Regards
Faraaj

Aaj iski hai to kal uski hua karti hai ... --- Shankar Dasgupta and Chorus.

Thanks for the uploads Waheed Bhai and Mahesh Bhai

Exon Ji

Thanks for the brief info - at least it tells us that he seems to have spent his lifetime in music without getting due recognition. Take the song Aaj Is Ki uploaded by Waheed Saab as an example - the singing is no less than that of any top singer of the 50s-60s.
