Chandni (1989), Yash Chopra Musical - Shiv Hari Genius Options

Shiv-Hari is the music director duo of Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia working in the Bollywood film industry of India. Their career is noted for five major movie scores: Silsila (1981), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), Parampara (1993) and Darr (1993).

Silsila, Shiv-Hari's first major hit, starred Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha and had lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Three songs stand out from the rest of the score: the lilting romantic duet Dekha Ek Khwab (sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, and chorus), the poetic Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum (rendered by Lata Mangeshkar, interspersed with dialogue recited by Amitabh Bachchan), and the riotous Holi song Rang Barse (sung by Amitabh Bachchan).

The two other major musical scores done by Shiv-Hari, Chandni and Darr, were really only noted for one song each. Chandni featured Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Chudiyan Hai by Lata Mangeshkar and Darr (which starred Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla, and Shahrukh Khan, was directed by Yash Chopra, and had lyrics by Anand Bakshi) had the upbeat Jadu Teri Nazar by Udit Narayan

Shiv Kumar Sharma, the only artiste in India to wield the Santoor with consummate artistry, comes from the Kashmir Valley. He was groomed by his father, Pt. Uma Dutt Sharma. Shiv first mastered the intricacies of Tabla before he switched over to santoor - a 100 string folk instrument of Kashmir, He introduced several changes, including 16 added strings to make this folk instrument suitable for classicl music.
Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, the most popular and top ranked flutist, hails from Allahabad. Strange but true, he has not learnt music in the conventional manner. Nor does he have the professional lineage. But the environment at the home. At 13 he started learning the elements of classical singing from Pt. Raja Ram. Later he switched to flute under Pt, Bholanath. Later he received training from Annapurna Devi, daughter of Ustad Allauddin Khan of Maiher. Churasia is extremely comfortable in light melodies, folk tunes and light classical music.

Shiv-Hari worked together to compose music for several Indian films. Their first and the most notable work was with Yash Raj films 'Silsila'.

That completes the album.
Yash Chopra had a splendid run from 1975 onwards when he roped Khayyaim for Kabhi Kabhi, Then onwards it was either Khayyaim or Shiv-Hari with Lataji's ubiquitous presence to ensure that all his albums would be gold mines

Lataji had bailed out so many musicians. She has been the Rahul Dravi for Hridaynath, Bappi Lahiri, Ram Laxman, Shiv Hari, Khaiyyaim & to a certain extent Rakesh Roshan & the everlasting LaxmiPyare. A fact which is validated from this : whenever these very musicians experimented a non-lata album, they fell flat.
