If one were to inform that today is the birthday of Sudha Malhotra, most of us would be confounded to even hear this name, as they may not have been aware about her at all. Surviving as she was in the era in which Lata Mangeshkar and Aasha Bhonsle were the queens and were giving play back to most of the female voices, she was able to carve a niche for herself, though the oeuvre of her work is very small as compared to her peers. Even then, she was a singer who has a phenomenal rate of success for the compositions to which she rendered the voice over. In interesting parallel to Lata Mangeshkar, she was also into the business of singing from a tender age of 5 years. There is an anecdote that the legendary music director, Ghulam Haider, discovered her in Lahore. There she was performing in front of a crowd of 16,000 people who were spell bound by her singing, and this performance paved the way for her singing career in the movies. In another striking similarity, she also made her debut at a tender age of eleven years, like Lata Mangeshkar, under the baton of Anil Biswas in AARZOO and sang the song, 'Mil Gaye Nain', which was a super hit composition. As she could get a limited opportunity to sing for the films she has lesser number of songs to her credit and among the films she has sung include Dhool Ka Phool, Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Barsaat Ki Raat, Kala Paani etc. An interesting anecdote is that during the recording of the song, "Tum Mujhe Bhul Bhi Jao To Yeh Haq Hai Tumko", the music director suddenly fell sick, and then Sudha Malhotra stepped into her shoes and facilitated in recording of the song, which went on to become a super hit song. She also has been one of the voices in the epochal quawali of Indian Cinema, "Na To Karwaan Ki Talsh Hai' from the film BARSAAT KI RAAT, but as she was not the voice for Madhubala but of Shyama, she could not derive the due mileage, inspite of the fact that she had sung for 29 hours to record this quawali. Or for that matter the song in KAALA PAANI, 'Na Main Tan Chahoon Na Rattan Chahoon', though it was picturised on Nalini Jayawant, as it was not sung by her, but was being rendered from the background she could not get another song to her credit sung by a heroine on the screen and also in the same category fall the song, 'Salaame Hasrat Kabool Kar Lo…' So a voice which had the range and the meter to become a voice over for many a heroines could not get her due recognition, as the time in which she was singing was difficult for her. Resultedly she shifted to songs that had a motherly touch or started singing songs for children, but as there numbers were very less, she could not get the requisite number of songs to register herself as a singer. Perforce she had to become a ghazal singer to survive and survive she did. The recognition for achievement was provided when she was bestowed an award by Giani Zail Singh, the President of India. May be in the times, when the awards and ceremonies dominate some of the organizers during there presentations for the year 2006 pay a tribute to her and honour her for the years that she has sort of lived a life of exile forced on her by the circumstances. thanks to http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/06/d...ha_malhotra.asp "Never explain - your friends don't need it, and your enemies won't believe you anyhow." - Elbert Hubbard |
