(Dev) Awwal Number (1990)

Dev wrote, produced, directed, and acted in this film with cricket and terrorism as background. The movie did not set anything on fire but managed to enjoy modest success.

In 2011 Dev called a press conference to claim that Aamir’s “Lagaan” released in 2001 borrowed idea from his film. Incidentally Aamir was the hero of both the films. Dev’s claim was that the theme of a cricketing underdog with a passion to do or die for his country was originally showcased in his movie. Dev told the press members that Aamir not even acknowledged the inspiration for his movie. Dev also was seriously thinking of reissuing “Awwal Number” in black and white as he felt that audience accepted him better when the movies were in black and white.

Incidentally cricketer turned politician from Pakistan Mr. Imran Khan was approached by Dev to play the role of an aging cricketer whose skills were on the decline. Khan Saab thanked Dev for the offer but politely declined to accept the role. Then Dev offered the role to Aditya Pancholi.

Actually, Dev Anand never called a press conference. That story got circulated because it was published on a website called "Faking news," which makes up (self-admittedly) funny stories about the Indian film industry. It was all a joke.

Somehow, that story went viral and got treated like it was real. But it never actually happened. Just thought I'd share this funny incident.

Having said that, Dev Anand did state in his book Romancing With Life, that Aamir may have gotten the idea for the climax of Lagaan from Awwal Number, though personally, I disagree.

(Dev) Sau Crore (1991)

The title refers to not the money but the population of India around 1991. This is another one from Dev which he wrote, produced, directed, and acted. He also introduced some new faces and assembled several character actors in support. Bappi Lahiri is back again with Dev for the third time in a row to compose music. Earlier he composed music for Dev's "Sachche ka Bol-Bala" in 1989 and "Awwal Number" in 1990. Most songs in the film are forgettable but one by Lata and Bappi, "Pyaar ke Liye Bani Main", is a beauty. (Dev) Pyar Ka Taraana (The Melody of Love) (1993)

This is yet another one of those films from Dev that he wrote, co-produced and directed. The movie also goes by the name “The Melody of Love”. Like in last several of his movies; he also introduced in this movie several new faces who were never to be heard again. The other producer of the film, Mangharam Harwani, was from Denmark, where the movie was shot extensively.

After the movie was released and proved to be a resounding flop, Harwani and Anand had a fall out. In the wake of this disaster Harwani sued Dev for non-payment of royalties. Civil as well as criminal suits were filed against Navketan and Dev by Harwani Group. The case dragged on and on for years and when eventually it was settled in 2002, Dev was required to pay to Harwani Group over one crore Rupees.

(Dev) Gangster (1994)

It is so painful to see Dev who once was glory to come down to a caricature of himself. He looked old and very fragile, as if he was sick. His acting was terrible. His dialogue delivery simply had no energy. On the top of it he once again wrote the story, produced and directed the film. Apart from a whole bunch of known actors he once again introduced lots of newcomers. For most of them this probably was their first and the last movie. Speaking of the last movie, the movie finds the veteran actor Ajit playing again a baddie. He passed away soon after the movie was released.

The movie ran into censor troubles because of several explicit scenes showing rapes and women anatomy. The movie simply was disgusting. The only thing worth mentioning is the music of the film. There are some good songs in the film, especially “Ek Ladki Mili” and a couple of others.

(Dev) Return of Jewel Thief (1996)

This is simply a very very bad film. The producers thought they had something good going here. Unfortunately, such great talent assembled here for this film, even they can’t save it from a disaster it is. The producers wanted to capitalize on Dev’s classic hit “Jewel Thief”. Instead this movie happens to be anything but. It is a series of misses. It is simply atrocious. The only thing worth mentioning is some of the songs. Not in any way they can be remembered, but a song here and a song there are okay.

(Dev) Main Solah Baras Ki (1998)

This is another movie that Dev wrote, produced, directed, and acted in. It has been customary with him as evidenced by the last several movies; this film also introduced several new people. Unfortunately for them, this was their only movie. The title character was played by the newcomer Sabrina. Her performance reminds one of Tina Munim, another one of Dev’s find who was very successful as an actor.

The movie’s music was composed by Rajesh Roshan. Roshan worked with Dev in three of his films, “Des Pardes (1978)”, “Man Pasand (1980)”, and “Lootmaar (1980)” all of which had hit music. This film also has several catchy songs. Songs like “Do Dilon Ki”, “Main Pukaaroon”, and “Sach Hua” are pleasing to hear. But the outstanding song of the album is the solo by Udit, “Zindagi Ke Sur”. I am uploading these and others from this film in two back-to-back posts.

With this film I conclude this thread on Dev. Dev did make few more films in 2000’s and was active making films until his death. This also concludes this thread on “Three of a Kind”. This thread started in November 2009. In nearly 50 months we covered over 270 films. It was a joy ride for me to share these songs and occasional anecdotes about them with you.
