(Nargis) Pardesi (1957)

K.A. Abbas, an avowed communist, made this Indo-Soviet film on a grand scale. It was based on real life memoirs of the Russian traveler Afanasy Nitkin who visited India in the 15th century. The name of the book was “Journey Beyond Three Seas”. The film was made in both Hindi and Russian.

This movie was a “real” joint undertaking. The hero of the movie was a Russian and several Russian actors were used in the movie. It was jointly directed by Abbas and Vasili Pronin of Russia. It starred among others Nargis, who was well-known to Russians thanks to Raj Kapoor’s films. It also starred Padmini as a classical danced. Balraj Sahni played a pivotal role in the film.

Anil Biswas provided the music to some beautiful songs mostly sung by his wife Meena Kapoor and Manna Dey. Couples of Meena’s solos are utterly melodious. A song or two of Mannada remind one he sang later in 1961 for “Kabuliwala”. Here he has several great numbers. Lata sang only one song and it was a beauty. I am uploading these songs and various music clips in back-to-back three posts. Quality of some of the songs is close to fair but most are of average quality. Some songs have several scratches and in spite of my best efforts to get rid of them but I had only a limited success.

Here are the songs in the first post…

Continuing Songs from "Pardesi (1957)"...

Here is the second set of songs. In the table below I have put question marks when the singers' names are not known. Lata's number is just a delight. Also, please note that the song "Phir Milenge" has some words superimposed with song in two separate places, in Hindi and in Russian. The second part of "Ye Hindustan" is of inferior quality.

Now for the songs...

(Madhubala) Police (1958)

This is one beautifully different album from ever so dependable Hemantda. It is just rollickingly rocking good. Hemantda must have been inspired by his co-singer of all the songs in this film, the great Geeta Dutt, and he joins her admirably to flow with the mood with some really fine songs. There are six duets by Geeta and Hemantda in this album. The only other song is a solo by Rafi Saab.

You know when you have the combination of Madhubala and Geeta Dutt things will always be champagne bubbly. Songs from this movie are no exception. Most songs have the same upbeat tempo and they are just plain fun to listen to them.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all the songs from the film. The second post contains several extended versions. Unfortunately quality of these is very inferior.

Here are the songs in the first post...

Concluding Songs from "Police (1958)"...

I am uploading several extended version songs in this post. Please be warned that the quality of these songs is extremely poor. Some are okay while some others are not that good.

With that caution, here are the songs...

(Nargis) Adalat (1958)

Here is beauty from the combination of the music director Madan Mohan Saab and the lyricist Rajinder Krishan ji. There are so many beautiful songs in this album that mentioning each one of them will be doing injustice to others. Yet I would like to pick a few of my favorites. The two ghazals by Lata, "Unn Ko Yeh Shikaayat Hai" and "Yoon Hasraton Ke Daagh" and that lovely duet by Asha and Rafi, "Zameen Se Humen". The last one especially reminds of the song from "Pyaasa (1957)", "Hum Aaap Ki Aankhon Mein" sung by Geetaji and Rafi Saab.

I am uploading these songs in back-to-back two posts. Here are the songs in the first post including a special version of "Jaana Tha" with an introduction by the music director Jaidev...

(Madhubala) Do Ustad (1959)

Here is OP at his rollicking best. It is like one continuous celebration. These songs just burst with bubbliness and the fuzz never dries up.

One unusual aspect of this film is that Rafi Saab singing for Raj Kapoor. Not that this was the first time it has happened. But at this juncture in his career, the bond between Raj and Mukesh was well established. It was an understood fact that if Raj was starring in a movie, it was going to be Mukesh who will be singing for him. It didn't happen that way in this movie. Apparently Raj insisted that with the producer Sheikh Mukhtar, who also is a costar in the film, and the music director. Neither of them could budge so Raj went along with it. Raj probably was happy with the end results. The only thing people remembered from this movie, which was a box-office failure, was ever so beautiful Madhubala who was very ill yet so spritely and full of life, and equally ebullient score of OP.

I am uploading songs from this film in three back-to-back posts. The first two posts contain songs from the film. The third post contains some of the extended versions.

Here are the songs in the first post...

Concluding Songs from "Do Ustad (1959)"...

I am uploading few of the extended version songs from this film. Please note that the quality of some of these songs is very uneven. I tried to clean the noise out and was only partially successful. Some songs have skips in them, especially the song "Tu Ladki". With that caution, here are these songs...
