(Dharmendra) Khamoshi (1969)

(Note: Most of the following write up is borrowed from my earlier posting of this film in this Forum.)

Here is one of my favorite films. It is probably one of the finest movies ever made in Hindi. With a great performance by Waheeda and a haunting score by Hemantda, the movie is close to a masterpiece in filmmaking. Many of the songs from this movie just linger on and on even after many listenings.

Gulzarji wrote some outstanding lyrics for the film. It has only five songs but all of them are very beautiful. Particularly, Hemantda's song "Tum Pukar Lo" with the melancholic voice that resonates with deep feelings gives one a shatteringly helpless experience. In the movie this was filmed on Dharmendra. It reminds another outstanding song Hemantda sang for Dharmendra in “Anupama (1966)”, “Ya Dil Ki Suno”, also composed by Hemantda. Then there is Kishoreda's beautiful song "Woh Shaam Kuchh Ajeeb Thi". This and Hemantda's songs are my personal favorites from this movie. Also, Lataji's number, "Humne Dekha Hai" is not far behind these songs.

This movie originally was made in Bengali. "Deep Jwele Jai", made in 1959, starred Suchitra Sen in the lead and had the music composed by Hemantda. That movie is now considered a classic.

Incidentally, this film also was made in Telugu as "Chivaraku Migiledi". This 1961 film starred the greatest Telugu film actress Savitri, who gave performance of her lifetime.

Sometime back there were plans to make this film in English. It was to star Jennifer Aniston, who became popular starring in a TV sitcom called "Friends". But the buzz about the remake has died down. Seems like the idea of remaking the movie is either scrapped or in the back burners, at least for now.

I am uploading the songs of "Khamoshi" in two back-to-back postings. The first post has all the songs from an original soundtrack album. The second post has several specials.

I am including several specials in this post. Abhijeet's version of "Tum Pukaar Lo" is from the album "Salute to Legends". The same song with Mannada's intro is also included. This is taken from the album "Legends: Hemant Kumar - The Singer-Composer (CD 4)". Next I am including Amit's version of "Woh Shaam". The same song, Lata's version, is also included.

Swarapriya sis,just one thing.The tune of tum pukar lo is not the same as ei raat tomar amar of Deep Jele Jai film.The hindi version of ei raat tomar amar is the song yeh nayan dare dare from Kohra(1964),sung and composed by Hemant Kumar.

(Manoj) Roti Kapda aur Makaan (1974)

This blockbuster was written and directed by its hero Manoj Kumar, who also produced it. It has some beautiful songs and has won a bagfull of Filmfare awards. Manoj won as the Best Director Award, Santosh Anand won the Best Lyricist Award for the song "Main Na Bhooloonga", and Mahendra Kapoor won the Best Male Playback Singer Award fare for the song "Aur Nahin Bas Aur Nahin".

here was another remake of this film that was released in 2005, "Kyon Ki".

Kyon Ki had Kareena Kapoor. It was not remake of Khamoshi but of Malayalam film Thalavattam which in turn was heavily inspired by "One flew Over Cuckoo's Nest".

here was another remake of this film that was released in 2005, "Kyon Ki".

Kyon Ki had Kareena Kapoor. It was not remake of Khamoshi but of Malayalam film Thalavattam which in turn was heavily inspired by "One flew Over Cuckoo's Nest".

I have seen the "Cuckoo" and "Kyon Ki" as well. I had somehow got this mixed up with "Khamoshi". Thanks for clearing it up, Sangeetji. Cheers. -S

This is one beautiful album from Jaidevji. Almost every song is an exquisite gem. The ever so great Yesudasji has several beautiful songs in this album. Here is a small note about one of the greatest singers of our time.

K.J. Yesudas (picture attached), born in Kerala, known as Gaana Gandharvan, is one of the greatest singers of Indian films, in particular Malayalam. He is also a trained classical musician and had the distinction of winning the National Award for the Best Playback Singer seven times. This is by far the most by anyone else. Also he won the State Awards as the Best Male Playback Singer forty four times from Kerala (24), Tamil Nadu (8), Karnataka (5), Andhra Pradesh (6), and West Bengal (1). He is also popular as devotional singer. Apart from the languages mentioned, in a career spanning nearly 50 years, he sang in Hindi, Gujarati, Oriya, Marathi, Punjabi, Russian, Arabic, Latin, and other languages. By one estimate, he has recorded over 56,000 songs. He also composed music, mainly for Malayalam films. He holds the distinction of singing 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day.

Yesudas, because of his enormous talent, has earned many accolades through out the world. UNESCO presented him in Paris before the dawn of the millennium in a public concert with an “Outstanding Achievements in Music and Peace” Award. He is a recipient of Padma Bhushan, was appointed by the Government of Kerala State as “Asthana Gayakan”, and Sangeet Natak Academy Award. He received several honorary doctorate awards.

Some of the praises by distinguished people in music or otherwise include phrases like “The Most Beautiful Voice in the World” (A.R. Rahman), “Voice of India” (Ravindra Jain), “Voice of God” (Ravindran – Music Composer), “Ocean of Music” (P. Susheela), “High as the Sky” (S. Janaki), “Living God of Music” (K.S. Chitra), “True Role Model” (P. Unni Krishnan), and others.

Yesudas, a true legend in his own time…
