(Vyjayanti) Nazrana (1961)
This movie which paired Vyjayanti and Raj for the first time was based on a hit Tamil film called "Kalyana Parisu" made by the first time director Sridhar who wrote many hit stories for Tamil films. Sridhar also made this movie in Telugu, which was also a huge hit, called "Pelli Kanuka" in 1960. Sridhar later made the Hindi hit films "Dil Ek Mandir" in 1963 and "Pyar Kiye Ja" in 1966. "Nazrana" was an average success. Raj appeared to be the wrong choice for the main lead, especially during the first half of the movie. Not only that he looked old and tired. In the beginning of the film he was supposed to play a college student participating in various athletic competitions. This was kind of hard to take for discerning cine goers. Even the normally convincing Vyjayanti Mala was too dramatic in her portrayal that didn't seem to leave very little impact. The only one who appeared to be in her element was Usha Kiron with a very consummate and understated performance. Yet her name was hardly seen in the press or even mentioned in any place. One thing that was standout for this film was music of Ravi. He came through again with some fine songs. Instead of Asha singing most of the songs for him, this time he had Lata sing most of the songs with Asha participating in one fine duet. It is difficult to single out which song is better than the other as each one of them is that good. I will upload songs from the Telugu film immediately after posting the Hindi songs in this section following these posts. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all songs from the film. The second post has few of the extended version songs. Here are the details of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ... Pelli Kaanuka (1960) - A Telugu Film
Both this film and "Nazrana (1961)" were based on a hit Tamil film named "Kalyana Parisu". Like the Tamil version, the Telugu version also was a huge hit. A.M. Raja, who gave music for only handful of the movies, provided the music for this film. Jikki's song, "Pulakinchani Madi", is just one outstandingly endearing and sweet song ... (Zeenat) Qurbani (1980)
This movie was a sensation when it was released. It has all the "masala" ingredients that make a movie a success. Apart from the "oomph" supplied by Zeenat, its music was fabulous. Thanks to the song "Aap Jaisa Koi" by Nazia Hassan, crowds flocked to see the movie. Nazia, born in Pakistan, was only 15 years when she sang the song “Aap Jaisa” in “Qurbani”. While shooting portions of the movie in England, the actor, producer, and director of the movie “Qurbani”, Feroz Khan, was introduced to Nazia by a mutual friend. Feroz gave her the opportunity to sing. The song became an overnight sensation and brought her recognition through out the world. She won the Best Female Singer Award for the song “Aap Jaisa”. (See the picture of Nazia below). With her singer brother Zohaib Hussain she released several albums. She sold over 55 million albums all over the world in a short span of time. She retired early to focus on her personal life. She gave away all the monies earned in charity. Nazia lived a very simple life devoting most of her time for charities. She was only 35 when she passed away from the complications resulting from lung cancer. Here are the songs from an original soundtrack album .. (Asha) Kati Patang (1970)
Here is a beautiful album from RD. Shakti Samanta made this movie following the thundering success of "Aradhana (1969)". With some delightfully melodious songs, fine acting, enough drama that was engrossing, the movie became a huge hit. Interestingly, music for this movie was not even nominated for any awards even though it richly deserved. Bakshi Saab was nominated for the title song but he lost to Hasrat Jaipuri for "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhaana" for "Andaaz". Asha Parekh took the Best Actress Award from Filmfare. Even though Kishoreda dominated the album with three beautiful solos and a duet, and a fine title song by Lata, to me the song of the album was Mukesh's "Jis Gali Mein". Such a great song. So much depth in the quivering voice of Mukesh Saab. A mellifluous composition of lovingly rich lyrics. It is too bad RD didn't give too many chances to Mukesh to sing some of the songs for his movies. If this is any indication, it seems like we missed out on some treasures. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains all the songs from the film from an original soundtrack album. The second post contains several specials. Now for the details of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ... Attached image(s) ![]() |

Panchamda's favourite singer was Kishoreda and that's why he had not used any other male singer's voice more than Kishore Kumar. He had allways told that Kishoreda is the most versatile singer of all times. His dynamism in music punched with great melody, excellent rhythm and his capability of composing eastern and western type of songs was best justified by mahaguru Kishore Kumar. In 1986 filmfare interview,RD had commented that Kishoreda is also the most classically flexible singer of all times.Once in an old interview, the interviewer asked who is is favourite,Lata or Asha, but RD promptly said that his favourite is Kishoreda.Even today,Kishoreda's popularity is at the top and among his millions of fans, undoubtedly RD Burman will remain the all time biggest fan of Kishore Kumar.

(Mala) Bahurani (1963)
In 1954 a Telugu film named "Ardhaangi" starring Savitri & Nageshwara Rao was made. It was based on a Bengali novel, "Swayamsiddha". (Who is the author of this great novel?) Telugu movie was a great hit. This film "Bahurani" was based on the Telugu hit and turned out to be a sensitive story well told. The director of the movie T. Prakasha Rao made in 1958 "Amar Deep" with Vyjayanti Mala & Dev Anand. His biggest Hindi film hit was L.V. Prasad's "Hamrahi" made in 1963, the same year of this movie. Rao made many hit Tamil and Telugu films to his credit. When someone asked the secret of his success, he confided that it was Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa" made in 1957 that taught him several nuances of how to direct. He claimed that he saw that film nearly 40 times or so and each time found something interesting to learn. Amazing. Even more amazing is the fact that Guru Dutt, hero of Rao, is the hero of this fine film. The music by C. Ramcandra is great. Sahir Saab wrote some rich lyrics. Both solos by Lata and the duet of Lata with Hemantda are melodious. Hemantda also has a "different" type of song in the solo "Eetal ke Ghal Mein Teetal". I am uploading songs from this film in three back-to-back posts. The first two posts have songs from the film. The third post contains some extended versions. I will also upload the songs of the Telugu film immediately after the Hindi songs are done with. Now for the songs in the first post ... Attached image(s) ![]() |
