Friends,

I am starting another thread similar to the SJ-Rafi saab thread to showcase another excellent combination, that of R.D. Burman-Mohd. Rafi.

R.D. Burman (also known as Panchamda to his many fans) was in my opinion a very versatile music director. He brought about a new trend and sound to film music. He was one of the greatest tune-smiths out of the second-generation composers of the Golden Era. His variety and music was excellent, he experimented with his compositions, and his songs have a lasting value. For me RD Burman is one of my Top favourite composers of all time.

Pancham had a special place for Rafi saab in his repetoire and Rafi saab was his second most used male singer after Kishore Kumar. The RD-Rafi output is an important chapter in the history of HFM and they produced many golden melodies together. It was through Rafi saab that Pancham made a mark in the world of music and broke through into the big league of composers.

Similar to the SJ-Rafi thread, this thread will not only be for songs, but also for trivia and any other snippets, articles etc. related to the RD-Rafi combination. Again, if you have any requests or anything you would like to add, feel free to do so here.

I hope every Rafian enjoys the RD-Rafi combination as much as I do ! smile1.gif

Nice introduction to a great topic. My favorites of this combination have to be Gulabi Aankhen Jo Teri Dekhi from The Train and Maine Poocha Chand Se from Abdullah .....after that it would be any filmi Qawwali of the duo.

Doston, Apna Tau Yeh Imaan Hai
Jo Bhi Jitna Saath De, Ehsaan Hai
Umr Ka Rishta Jodne Waale
Apni Nazar Mein Deewane Hai

Thanks for the memories HF. Bye Bye.

Thanks Deewani ji......the two songs you mentioned are indeed masterpieces and their qawwalis are amazing !.

Here is the first song to start this thread off. A nice Rafi-Asha duet very well sung, with a rhythmic beat and good use of traditional indian instruments.

Hey Irfan bhai, my pleasure smile1.gif

The next two songs are from a film starring Vinod Khanna and Reshma.

Film: Parchhaiyan
Year: 1972
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

This is one of the excellent duets that Pancham created. Beautiful smooth singing from Rafi and Asha, the rhythm is outstanding and a great tune.

Sanson Mein Kabhi

A nice village-type song, spirited singing by Rafi saab adding that extra punch as he always did to this Pancham creation.

Zara Akhiyan La Laiye

The title song of this film starring Dheeraj Kumar and Vaishali. Although the film flopped the music was great. Notice the great use of the bongos, a nice tune to go along with excellent singing from Rafi saab.

Fantastic topic Prince bhai.............There are alot of nice gems of RD / Rafi combo........infact i say everyone of this combo is a classic to listen to........alot of them have been over shadowed by R D / Kishoreda combo which in my opinion is what most of us remember.........I think my first experience of this combo was "DEEWANA MUJHSA NAHIN IS AMBER KE NEECHE"................At that time [early 80's] i never knew the music director of the song..........this song i found very sweet and i just love the way Rafi sings it...........Later after a bit of research i found out that the MD of "Teesri manzil 1966" was RD Burman..............I think Teesri manzil was R D Burmans biggest breakthrough.

I really appreciate this topis, thanks for starting this.

In fact i believe that it was RAFI SAHAB who helped RDB to create his impact in tight competition when RDB started his career.

I NEVER HEARD AN ANGEL SINGING,YES I HEARD MOHAMMED RAFI SAHAB.

I LOVE THEE RAFI SAHAB

Thanks Siddiqui bhai, ANT bhai and Humblerafi bhai for your comments, much appreciated. Indeed this combination was excellent, there are many great songs that they have produced together. There are also many hidden gems (that may have been overshadowed by other songs as ANT bhai mentioned) in their partnership that are all fantastic.

Pancham and Rafi produced great variety in their partnership. Rafi saab had alot of variety with other MD's as well and this partnership was one of them. From romantic to sad to pathos-filled songs, comic tunes, ghazal-type songs, western and indian-classical based gems, this combination produced it all.

This brings me to the next song, a Rare treat for all Rafians. This is a devotional song sung with great feeling by Rafi and Asha. The interesting part is how Pancham has treated this composition. Pancham was known to be unorthodox in his treatment of songs, he would always try to experiment and be creative and try out new things with his songs. In this composition he has used heavy percussion as a backdrop to compliment the song, and at the same time has stuck to the roots of a conventional devotional song.

Enjoy this gem in crystal clear quality !! smile1.gif

Glad to know you are enjoying the songs Laique bhai and AkbarAli bhai !

The next song is one of the early RD-Rafi hits, picturised on a still struggling Rajesh Khanna (at the time). The song is simply amazing, singing-wise and musically too.

A catchy, fun-filled and breezy duet by Rafi and Asha from a film that starred the dialogue master Raj Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar.
