Next we have Shankar composing solo for this Dharmendra film a few years after the death of Jaikishan. The popular belief is that Saira Banu sang this song with Rafi saab, however this is not true as the voice of Saira Banu in this song is Ranu Mukherjee, the daughter of Hemant Kumar. Ranu's voice matched Saira perfectly on screen. [b]Sone Ke Gehne Film: Resham Ki Dori Some believe it's the voice of Sulakshana Pandit in this song. It is NOT my opinion. "I live for those who love me, For those who know me true; For the heaven so blue above me, And the good that I can do." |

Before SJ arrived on the scene, Background Music in our films was not that great, and alot of composers did not spend alot of time on it. The only composer who took it seriously was Naushad and he was a great BM composer.
Jaikishan was given the job of composing SJ's BM because he was the junior partner and he totally took BM to a whole new level, that people began to take notice about the importance of BM towards the success of a film. Jaikishan set high standards for composers and became the Numero Uno of BM. There is a tight limit in time and film frames for a composer to compose BM and this was something that Jaikishan did so well. An interesting aspect of Jaikishan's BM was that tunes that would turn into future songs would be played as a part of the BM, which later became an SJ trademark. This does not mean all the tunes used in the SJ's BM were Jai's. It was a collaborated effort, sometimes Jai would hear Shankar play a tune and use it, or they would both work on a tune, or sometimes the tune would be entirely Jai's. So the two would join hands in creating these tunes for the background that would ultimately turn into songs, and the rest of the BM would be handled by Jai. The following is a mind-blowing piece of art, just listening to it draws you back into a different time frame. If you want to learn about background music, I would suggest keeping SJ as a model, since their BM is an institution by itself. There was a record released for this particular piece after the film came out. I now present you to a beautiful 34 minute presentation of: The Background Music Of Mera Naam Joker I know this may not have anything to do with Rafi saab but as this is also an SJ thread and I thought it would be best to upload it here since it would receive much more exposure. For all those members who love SJ's music, DO NOT MISS downloading this, you will cherish it ! Enjoy Prince Ali |

I think u just forgot Anil Biswas Just see one film :Arzoo (Dilip Kumar) U mean to say SJ made it more melodious and acceptable, that's right. Thanks Prince for the background score of MNJ Here is the best singer of universe "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." -George Bernard Shaw ." |

My pleasure folks !
Here is an interesting bit of trivia: Rafi Saab's Debut with SJ If you look at a chronology of their films together, you will see that this partnership started out quite slowly before it really took off. The reason for this is the tradition of mostly female based songs in movies of those years and in SJ's case a whole lot of songs for Lata as well as their earlier preference for Mukesh and Talat Mahmood. Nevertheless, earlier SJ films had great Rafi songs as well. The following is a list of SJ's earlier films from Barsaat in 1949 and the number of Rafi songs in each film: Barsaat : 1 Awara : 2 Badal : 0 Kali Ghata : 1 Nagina : 2 Daag : 0 Parbat : 1 Poonam : 0 Aah : 0 Aas : 0 Aurat : 0 Naya Ghar : 0 Patita : 0 Shikast : 2 Badshah : 0 Boot Polish : 2 Mayur Pankh : 0 Pooja : 5 (first time Rafi sings 3 or more songs for SJ in a film) Total songs from 1949-1954 (18 films): 16 After Pooja, Rafi's presence in SJ's music is still here and there: Seema : 2 Shree 420: 1 Basant Bahar: 2 Chori Chori: 2 Halaku: 2 Kismat Ka Khel: 0 New Delhi : 0 Patrani : 0 Rajhat : 1 Begunah : 0 Kathputli : 0 Baghi Sipahi : 0 Yahudi : 1 Anari : 0 Choti Behan : 1 Kanhaiya : 0 Love Marriage : 5 Total songs from 1954-1959 (17 films): 17 Total Songs from 1949-1959 (35 films): 33 Looking ahead: Main Nashe Main Hoon : 1 Shararat : 2 Ujala : 1 Then in Shammi Kapoor's College Girl (1960) we have 6 Rafi songs and the rest as they say is history. So looking at the whole picture, it was nearly 40 films and a full decade before the ultimate combination of Mohd. Rafi and Shankar Jaikishan took off !. Prince Ali |
