Another excerpt from the book:

Dil Ke Jharoke Mein Tujhko Bithaakar (Brahmachari) reminds me of another incident. Jaikishan and I had gone to Ahmedabad, when my friend insited on showing me the city. While roaming through the city's heart-land, he noticed several minarets with small decorative windows (Jharoke). Almost instantaneously he thought of Dil Ke Jharoke Mein Tujhko Bithaakar. He composed the first verse, and left it to Hasrat to finish the song.

Another excerpt:

For Pyar Hi Pyar, Jaikishan composed all the songs, but I was very keen to have one song composed by Shankarji. When I expressed my wish to Jaikishan, he readily agreed, and Shankarji too, when I approached him, instantly agreed to compose a tune. In fact, Shankarji suggested that he would like to compose the title song. I was in a quandary as Jaikishan had already recorded Dekha Hai Teri Aankhon Mein, Pyar Hi Pyar Beshumaar. But I gratefully accepted Shankarji's De Do Pyar, Le Lo Pyar.

Mohsin Bhai's request:

A classic duet with a beautiful tune and a nice light tabla. This was one of the first duets after the Lata-Rafi conflict. Jaikishan was the one who brought back together the two legendary singers. CD rip at 192kbps !.

The next song is a nice classical-based romantic gem from a film starring Nargis and Pradeep Kumar. This was the last film of Nargis where she played the role of a woman who has a Jekyll & Hyde character and split personality. The film was delayed due to various reasons and the songs were released much earlier.

This song is one of my favourites, from a Rajendra Kumar and Saira Banu film. The tune, singing and orchestration are all top class. Rafi saab's voice soars through this song. CD Rip:

Sacha Hai Ghar Pyar Mera Sanam
Film: Jhuk Gaya Aasman
Year: 1968
Lyrics: Shailendra

In personal life, he was not merely a man but a god !. In this film land, people usually think ill of others but Rafi Miyan never indulged in harming anybody. Once he just came to know that Shankar and Jaikishan have developed differences on some issue. He straight away came to us and sitting near both of us lovingly, counseled us "This pair (Shankar-Jaikishan) should remain intact till death. Do not let your success, earned through such a hard work, go waste. Don't ever listen to those who are out there to create differences between you two !". My and Jaikishan's eyes became misty with tears and we embraced each other. One might wonder what was the need for him to think of our welfare ?.

- Shankar

In many respects they have been trendsetters. I think their major contribution has been 'contra melody'. Evocative contra melody is not just plain playing. Contra melody means counter melody which runs parallel to the main tune. It does not mean a cacophony of instruments merely to embroider a song. The song from Dil Ek Mandir (1963) Yaad Na Jaye has a piece of contra melody which goes far beyond the tune and the words. In the song Kahan Ja Rahe The from Love Marriage (1959) you actually hear a dialogue between the singer and the accordian.

A nice song from a Shashi Kapoor/Hema Malini starrer in the late sixties. The lyrics are by Farooq Qaiser who was not a SJ regular and only worked with SJ on three films.

Next is a nice breezy song from a film known for Rafi saab's masterpiece Yaad Na Jaaye and Lataji's excellent Ruk Ja Raat Thahar Jare Chanda. The film starred Meena Kumari, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar.

This next song is inspired from the Beatles hit With a Little Help From My Friends. As always, SJ adaptations sounded better than the original. The song has some great saxophone pieces and a great rhythm. SJ's popular Kishore solo from this Shammi Kapoor/Hema malini starrer, "Zindagi Ek Safar" was the number one song of 1971. There is an interesting excerpt related to this song:

Jaikishan used to present a framework to the artiste and then expect the artist to develop the song. If it did not appeal to him, he would change it. Take for example the Andaz (1971) song Dil Use Do Jo Jaan De De. Asha Bhosle, while rehearsing, rendered the song a trifle flat. Explaining to her he said: "A house can be built by bricks alone. Yet to make it a beautiful home, it must be sufficiently decorated. What I have given you is a brick structure. To decorate it is up to you". What this indicates is that Jaikishan was open to changes and improvisations at the last moment.
