Went through all Hollywood directors and their umpteen wives.... Hey SF My daytime job keeps me too busy to concentrate on movies anywhere near the level I would like...perhaps when I retire a few decades from now!!! But seriously, you need to see three Fellini films - Notte di Cabiria, La Strada (both starring his wife Masina) and Amarcord. I honestly think that if you pick the three best films of any director and compare, Fellini will stand out as the greatest director of all time...all three films are magical....oh, and avoid Juliet of the Spirits at all cost!!! Faraaj..point noted. Will look out for those movies...i too became kind of busy for different reasons. Here is one hero ... Jean-Paul Belmondo who became an international sensation with the ultra-stylish Godard classic A Bout de Souffle (1960) - one of the masterpieces of the French New Wave.... Faraaj..Yes it is Jean paul belmondo..
I watched a film called Fear over the city in my teenage and fell for it. A taut film about a serial killer...with an amazing climax. Still am hunting for that film.. Here is one brilliant Hollywood director... After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

You can't ignore this 'shining' personality even with your 'eyes wide shut'. Almost all his films were executed with 'clockwork' precision Aditya He was an obsessive perfectionist to the extent that many of the actors who worked with him broke down due to the numbers of takes he made them do. Jack Nicholson famously cried during the making of The Shining and shouted, "Mr. Kubrick, what do you want?". I know he is hailed by many film buffs and critics as possibly the greatest director of all time, but let me make a few personanal criticisms of him, great photographer and director though he was. His films have no heart. The are cold, perfectly timed and precise but betray no human emotion. And because of the repeated takes, the performances of all his actors - and he worked with some greats - are uniformly flat, emotionless and mechanical. Compare to the films of an easy going director like Clint Eastwood. Not perfect, but very human. And prolific too! Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky famously saw 2001: A Space Odyssey and criticising it as heartless, made Solyaris as a reply to that film. 2001 is technically a better film, but can't be viewed more than once unlike the lovely Solyaris. On another note, his favourite director was Elia Kazan, favourite motion picture was The Godfather and he viewed Kieslowski's Dekalog as the greatest work of art the 20th century produced. He was originally offered the directorial assignment for The Exorcist and much to his later regret, turned it down. He tried to make amends with The Shining. Full Metal Jacket is my favourie Kubrick film... You can't ignore this 'shining' personality .. Aditya..you are right. It is Stanley Kubrick.. Full Metal Jacket is my favourie Kubrick film... Faraaj...that is fantastic info as usual. Film making leaves so much scope for expressing ..often we find them eccentrics and egotists. Charlie chaplin is one more perfectionist who it is said..took 84 takes of the final shot of " City lights" where the heroine who was blind once recognizes the touch of the man who gave her eyes..as her pity turns into admiration and love in a fleeting manner ! Ofcourse, it was one shot i will remember for a long long time. Incidentally Shining is the only one i saw... Here is an English actor .. Did he play Poirot at some point? Or maybe it is just that I noticed the rather prominent "egg-head".
