(Dilip) Shabnam (1949)

Here is an early and beautifully melodious album from the incomparable Burmanda. He utlizes talent of Shamshad Begum to the fullest extent in this album. She has nine (5 solos and four duets) out of 11 songs in this album. I am uploading all of the songs from this album in back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

SP, Hum Kis Ko Sunayen Haal is sung by Lalita Deolkar.

Aditya

Thanks for the suggested correction. I have made the changes accordingly. Thank you. Cheers. -S

QUOTE(swarapriya @ Jan 9 2010, 03:10 AM) *

This was a banner year for Lata. Every song in this movie was a huge hit. But this didn’t come easy. While recording of these songs, Naushadji felt that Lata lacked proper Urdu diction. Lataji’s mother tongue being Marathi, this was not unusual. Naushadji spent many hours coaching Lata on how to speak Urdu and how to sing some of the songs. This becomes very evident when Lata sings the song “Uthaaye Jaa Unke Sitam” in the movie.

Lata has very rarely made outright mistakes in diction; one of these rare instances occurs in "Andaz". In the song "merii laa.Dalii rii merii laa.Dalii", there is line that goes "ghuu.NghaT kaa.Dh ke gu.Diyaa naache". It appears twice in succession; both times, Lata pronounces the "che" of "naache" in the way it is pronounced in Marathi, where this sound is distinctly different. It's quite amusing.

After 1949, one is hard put to find a Lata song where one can find fault with her diction (barring one oft-repeated glitch: pronouncing "muhabbat" as "muh*o*bbat"!).

As usual, Swarapriya, excellent work. I didn't have one of the unreleased tracks: it was a pleasure discovering it.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Abhay. Cheers. -S

Abhay, there is one more instance that comes to my mind and that was in 1951. In Jhukti Hai Duniya from Sagai, Lata pronounces Begum as begham (implying "without sorrow"), not once but twice.

SP, in Lata's own words, it was Mohd. Shafi who put her in touch with a Maulana who tutored her in Urdu. This happened after the (in)famous daal-bhaat incident with Dilip Kumar during the making of Andaz.

Aditya

Aditya, I'm not familiar with the daal-bhaat incident you're referring to here. Can you please illuminate? Thanks a lot. Cheers. -S

(Kishore) Dhobi Doctor (1954)

Here is Khayyam Saab's beautiful album. The missing song, shown in red italics in the table below, is apparently by Kishoreda. I was advised in an earlier posting that this one is very hard to get. But I am convinced that someone out there from our Forum or a friend of the members may have the song. I am appealing to good hearts to share this song if thry can. Many many thanks.

Now for the songs from this album ...

(Dev) Dilruba (1950)

Here is a festival of songs of Geetaji. This album boasts 10 songs and Geetaji stars in eight of them; six sweet solos and two delightful duets. In solos you see her vibrantly melodious voice paint quivering pathos in a couple of them, pleading for her lover in another, romantic rave in a couple more, and philosophical about life in another.

I am uploading these songs in back-to-back two posts. All these songs are by the courtesy of our Forum member Mirsaji. Thank you very much for the songs, Mirsaji.

Here is the first set of songs, all six solos of Geetaji ...
