(Sadhana) Man-Mauji (1962)

Here is a beauty from Madan Mohan ji. The movie boasts several perennially pleasing songs. Lataji's solos, "Chanda Jaa" and "Main To Tum Sang" are some of her great work for Mohan Saab. Also, Kishore da's "Zaroorat Hai" is another beauty.

This movie was based on the Telugu hit "Donga Ramudu". In Hindi, in spite of its beautiful songs, the movie didn't become as popular. I will upload songs from the Telugu movie in this section following the uploads of these songs.

Here is a description of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Donga Ramudu (1955) - A Telugu Movie

This was actor Nageshwara Rao's (ANR) first home production. It was directed by one of Telugu films great director, K.V. Reddy. Because Reddy was not available, ANR waited for him for over two years. It was worth the wait becuase the movie went onto become a major hit. The movie had Savitri in the female lead. One of the great actresses of our time, incomparable Savitri, even though she didn't have a significant role in this movie, still leaves a great impression. The music was by Pendyala. The songs are still great to listen to.

Here they are ...

(Saira) Door Ki Awaaz (1964)

Here is a delightful offering from Ravi. This album is dominated by the great Rafi Saab. Out of nine songs, he appears in seven of them. He has five beautiful solos, a fine duet with Asha, and a hummable birthday song with Asha and Manna Dey.

Here are the songs ...

(Sharmila) Yeh Raat Phir Na Aaygi (1966)

Here is yet another song riot from the incomparable OP. In this album OP gives Asha every song except one, four solos and three duets, that exploit her singing talents to the maximum. The result is one beautiful album with every song utterly delightful and unforgettable.

Incidentally, this was the first time OP had Mahendra sing for him and the results are very gratifying. Later on after the movie and the songs became huge hits, in an interview OP said that he was surprised how well Mahendra sang the solo "Mera Pyaar Woh Hai". After its success, OP had Mahendra sing in several movies for which he composed music.

Asha has two duets with Rafi Saab. Both a delight. I am also including an extended version of "Phir Miloge", that probably was contributed by the Forum members. Thanks. Asha also has a duet with Minu Purshottam, "Huzoorewaala". It is an aboslute beauty. One wonders how such a talented singer like Purshottam got to sing only a handful of songs in her entire professional singing career. It is such a pity.

Because of the number of songs, I will upload them in back to back posts. Here is the first set of songs ...

(Nutan) Shabab (1954)

Here is one of the brilliant compositions of Naushad Saab. The music for early films of Naushad ji speak volumes of his genius. It seems like with the use of some simple instruments he was able to create such magnificently everlasting music. Each one of these songs is just sublime and a pure joy to listen to. Makes you feel good inside. Such is the power of Naushadji's music.

The movie "Shabab" has so many songs with each song a beauty in its own right. I will upload them in back to back posts. I am missing one of the great song, "Daya Kar Girdhar Gopal", by Amir Khan. This is shown in red italics in the table below. It was not on my original CD but it came as part of a CD set collection of some of Naushadji's songs. Unfortunately, I am not able to locate it. If anyone of the members has it, please come forward to share with us.

Now here is the first set of songs ...

Wah!!!! what can one say about Rafisaab and Naushad....every song like a mountain of gold. Rafisaab songs of Shabab.....are so meldious that even the word melody does not sound appropriate..... biggrin.gif

PLAYBACK SINGING STARTS AND ENDS WITH RAFISAAB. IN TERMS OF QUALITY, CONSISTENCY & VERSATILITY, RAFISAAB IS INFINITE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ALL SINGERS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER HIM.

Is the solo version from the movie too? Or is it his portion of the song from the duet? If it is different than the one I have uploaded (the duet), please do share with us. Thanks.

(Vyjayanti) Nagin (1954)

Nagin was inspired by the great Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet”. The novel thing about the movie is that it has a background of two rival groups of snake catchers living in some forest. But that is only part of the charm. It has one of the superb music composed by the great Hemant da. He was assisted by young Kalyanji Virji Shah (of Kalyanji-Anand ji team) and another young man named Ravi, who will eventually become another great music director in his own right. The been music was played by Ravi and Kalyanji made use of an electronic instrument called Clavioline to generate some of the sounds for the songs. The use of the synthesizer was a first for an Indian movie.

The songs were such a craze when the movie was released that there were all kinds of stories of the effect of the been music. Some rural touring theaters reported that while the been music was being played it attracted several cobras into the theater and the panic stricken fans have to be evacuated from the halls. These probably were tall tales but there is no denying to the fact that snake charmers used to play the music from the film as part of their show. This all sounds very fishy (or snaky) because snakes are deaf and only react to movements and heat.

Another winning point about the movie was the performance by its heroine, Vyjayanti Mala. A trained dancer, she was barely 17 or 18, when she acted in this movie. Her dances rivaled those of snakes and charmed movie goers all over India and suddenly she became a force to reckon with in Hindi film field.

The movie is like one prolonged song and dance sequence. It is a celebration of young love and life; restless, exciting, hallucinating, and intoxicating. Let us have some fun with these beautiful songs. Because of their numbers, I will upload them in three separate posts. Here is the first set of songs …
