Wilder gave him another great role in The Apartment, sixteen years later, again a negative one, and Mac Murray once again shone in that role.

Identify the actress:

Catherine Deneuve
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - French musical tragedy with no dialogue, everything was sung.
Belle de Jour - Bored housewife leads a double life as a prostitute when her husband is away at work. This film was scandalous for its time.
Repulsion - Her best film (and performance) and one of Polanski's best. This is an amazing take on sexual repression and madness.

Madhavi

I think the pic was from Umbrellas.....

SF

I could be wrong the pic is a bit misty with the glass and raindrops. But definitely the pic you've u/l'ed has a much more mature Deneuve - post Belle de Jour, pre Indochine.....mid 70s perhaps....lets wait for Madhavi to clear the mystery.....

An actor who debuted (as a film actor) in another of my favourite films....he stole the show in a great ensemble cast.....his performance is the stuff dreams are made of!

tongue1.gif I love your clues too...despite the fact that I am terrible at remembering faces...these wonderful details trigger off instant recognition. The fat man... Sydney Greenstreet, in the classic The Maltese Falcon A pretty sensational debut at the age of 61. Despite acting in very few movies (Warner Brothers) he is well recognized for his villanous roles and his pairing with Peter Lorre in nine films. He gave another memorable villainous performance as the club owner in Casablanca where he teamed up again with Lorre and Bogart. It was Huston's debut film too and some call it the first noir... indeed the stuff dreams are made of. What a film!

Faraaj,
I am sorry about the mist and the raindrops...I thought I was providing a visual clue to the film... tongue1.gif Indeed it is Umbrellas of Cherbourg featuring a young and ethereal Catherine Deneuve. She decided to take up acting seriously after this film.

SF, yes that is a much more mature Deneuve, what a marvelous career she has had! She was excellent in Repulsion when she was pretty young, and then it was marvelous to see her later in Belle de Jour where the tension is much more internalized and expressed in a very different mode. It was a fascinating performance.

after the fat man, the beautiful man... biggrin.gif Sterling Hayden as Johnny Clay in The Killing. Paramount dubbed him the most Beautiful man in the movies. He featured in a number of noirs. He did not particularly like acting but it paid for his bread and butter. He served in the marines and loved sailing. He was one of the actors forced to confess the names of "comrades" during the red scare. SF I read your commentary on the Killing and have been planning to comment on that (for ages tongue1.gif ), loved it too. A first rate noir/heist, a sparse film, made with such precision.

Identify the actress:

She starred in a film that won a number of oscars. She gave an superb performance as an alienated high-school graduate in a less famous film, in which she danced to a Rafi track...

Apart from the Killing and an excellent Western with Joan Crawford called Johnny Guitar, Hayden also appeared in two great supporting roles in the 70s - The Godfather as a corrupt cop who is shot by Pacino in the restaurant, and as a drunk writer in The Long Good-Bye (an Altman classic).

I would guess Molly Ringwald from The Breakfast Club (excellent teen movie). But your stating that she starred in a film that won a number of oscars confuses me. Apart from 1984-1986, her career's been pretty poor in terms of quality of films. If this is indeed Molly, which film won the oscars???

Don't think its Molly, but she's famous for something else too.

She turned down the Julia Roberts role in Pretty Woman (1990) and the Demi Moore role in Ghost (1990)!

Thora Birch. The 'less famous' film is Ghost World and 'film that won a number of oscars' is Amrican Beauty
