Mubarak Begum is also one song which belonged to the golden era of music.Now she is forgotten.
She did not got her due in this industry probably due to existence of Lata-Asha Dominance.What an Irony That She talks in an interview that Most of the songs recorded for big banners were delted when films released eg. In Mughal-e-Azam her song with Lata and Shamshad "Husn Ki Baraat Chali "was deleted and the film came out to be Lata dominated.

Excerpt from an internet reproduction of a 1987 article by Nalin Shah in "PLAYBACK >> AND FAST FORWARD":

"Singer Mubarak Begum, in her fifties, is still confident of her ability to sing well. Day after day she waits for her small dreams to come true. It is an endless wait in a small room where she lives with her family. Ruefully she watches the time passing by and when her own melody 'Kabhi tanhaiyon men hamari yaad ayegi' rings in her ears she feels sad and neglected".



Mubarak Begum came to "popular" attention when she sang a duet with Mohd. Rafi composed by Shankar-Jaikishen, "Mukhko Apne Galey Lagalo" for the film "HAMRAHI". It is a matter of conjecture why she, instead of a better-known singer, was chosen to partner Rafi-sahab in that number (picturized on Rajendra Kumar and South-Indian actress Jamuna).

But earlier, she had carved a niche for herself in the hearts of music-lovers with her plaintive rendering of the title song from "HAMARI YAAD AAYEGI". Connoisseurs also take delight in a rare track in her voice, "Bemurawwat Bewafa Begaana-E-Dil Aap Hai" from the little-know film "SUSHILA".

Just short of being a one-song wonder, Mubarak Begum seems to have been a will-o-the-wisp among playback artistes. Rarely do we come across songs in her voice, and even so, less likely for a big-name movie, e.g. "MADHUMATI", but more like a small-budget film such as "QAWWALI KI RAAT".

Mubarak Begum belongs to that less-than-handful number of talented singers, e.g. Sudha Malhotra, who had just a brief moment in the sun, eclipsed as they were by the dominance of the Mangeshkar sisters.

Little is known about Mubarak Begum, because just about nothing was written or reported about her. All we are left with are her few songs. Again, with the exception of Sudha Malhotra, few other singers in the annals of Hindi Film Music have left back such a memory with as small a repertoire!
