Boot Polish (1954)
Here is movie Raj Kapoor produced in which he only had a cameo appearance (sleeping in a train). This was a movie in which two child artistes had principal roles. Rattan Kumar, the boy, later migrated to Pakistan. Naaz, the girl, grew up and appeared in some movies. One of the notable being as Guru Dutt's daughter in the classic drama "Kaagaz Ke Phool". But she never had that much of a distinguished career. This movie was both commercial as well as artistic triumph. In the same year, K.A. Abbas (a close friend and associate of Raj) wrote, produced, and directed "Munna" about an orphan kid searching for a home. "Munna" won most of the laurels, and deservingly so. This was the first movie for which Lata Mangeshkar didn't sing for Shankar & Jaikishan. Lata originally was signed to sing the song "Main Bahaaron Ki Natkhat Raani". But Lata refused to sing it because initial lyrics were "Main Bazaaron Ki Natkhat Raani". Lata ji found them to be objectionable. Lyrics were changed to "Main Bahaaron Ki" to accommodate Lata ji. Even then Lataji didn't want to sing that song. Shankar & Jaikishan then decided to use Asha's voice for that song. With Lata opting out, Asha was at the center stage in this movie singing all of the female songs. This was also the first movie for which Mukesh didn't sing a song for a Raj Kapoor production in which Raj appeared. Apart from their regular lyricists Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri, one of the song was written by Deepak. It was changed to "Main Bahaaron Ki" so that Lata can sing that song. I am uploading all the songs from a CD. Details of the songs are given below ... This post has been edited by swarapriya: Dec 18 2008, 04:15 AM Attached image(s) |

Thank you so much, Swarapriyaji!!! Isn't MAALIK TERE JAHAAN MEIN from AB DILLI DOOR NAHEEN, by SUDHA MALHOTRA? Yes, you are right. That was a mistake. As a matter of fact there are few more songs that need to be uploaded. I will do it now. One small request. Can you please stop addressing me "ji"? Thanks. Cheers, Swarapriya |

Shree 420 (1955)
Here is one of the greatest movies ever to hit the Indian screen. This movie was another joint collaboration between Raj Kapoor and K.A. Abbas. It was a precursor to "Jagte Raho". Almost parallel themes for both of these movies. A stranger coming into town and looses his way in the big city. In the case of 420, the stranger is an educated man with a simple heart. Soon he is lured into quick and easy money doing shady work. This was the story of a man caught between the higher self esteem and enticing material aspirations. In the end his good nature and true love triumph. The movie has some of the most memorable music composed by Shankar & Jaikishan. Each song is a sparkling gem. The song "Mera Joota Hai" was an international phenomenon. One of the most beautifully picturized romantic scene in rain was the song "Pyaar Hua". Young Rishi Kapoor makes brief appearance in this song. "Ramayya Vastavayya" was another song that was a rage. Here "Vastavayya" is a Telugu word meaning "will you come?". Shankar with his Hyderabad background on occasion had songs sprinkled with a Telugu word. A newspapaer account said that Shankar overheard this while driving by in Hyderabad where some construction workers were humming these words in a song and decided to use it. Similarly, Shailendra recounts how "Mud Mud Ke" song came about. He and Shankar and Jaikishan were taking a walk in Bombay streets one evening when a beautiful woman passed by. Jaikishan couldn't help turning back and looking her several times. Shailendra created the song on the spot. All songs I am uploading except one are from a CD. The song "Mera Joota Hai", the duet version, is by the courtesy of the Forum members. Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...
