Folks
I am not sure how popular this one will be. I was listening to the song "Daiyya re daiyya" from leader. Rafi only has Alaap in it. it actually adds a huge value to the song. similarly the song "Sajan tere pyaar mein" from Mahua and "Ruhi Ruhi Ruhi" from Shahjehan with K L Saigal. I wonder if any of you has come across songs where Rafi has made only a minimal appearance. I would like to collect such songs too. Feel free to contribute. Hope you have a nice summer... O.P. Nayyar used to mostly always try and enlarge the role of Asha in Rafi-Asha duets, in comparison to the role of Rafi Saab.
Why, you may ask. My own answer is that OPN always very fondly wanted to popularise Asha as a singer. (Poor man, he didn't know how counterproductive it would turn out to be for himself during later days!) Anyway, OPN thought the best way to sell Asha was to make her sing with the Colossus, Rafi, as frequently as possible, but with a longer duration for Asha. More so, since OPN knew that the simple and unassuming soul that Rafi was, he would never object to it. One example is the Rafi-Asha duet from Film: Tum Sa Nahi Dekha, "Dekho Kasam Se, Kasam Se". In this two full antaras and more is on Asha. Rafi Saab comes in between briefly with the beautiful line, "Kya Lagaayi Tum Ne Yeh Kasam Kasam Se, Lo Thahar Gaye Ham, Kuch Kahogi Ham Se" and he steals the show. There is another Rafi-Shamshad duet from Film :Musafirkhana(MD: again OPN). It goes thus: "Thoda Sa Dil Lagaake Dekh, Rum Pum Tararararara rarararum". In this duet, the whole lyrics are only on Shamshad Begum. Rafi Saab just keeps saying his Rumpums and Tararumpums, much like the interlude musical bits! And by this, the song has become such a beautiful one! Some more examples later. The first one that comes to my mind..is the beautiful composition..Main tumhi se phoochti hoon...from Black Cat. Rafi sings just a couple of lines before the main song.." Tum haseen ho tumhe sab dil mein jagah dete hain...Hum mein bhi kya baat hain...Aise jo bhi pyar karen ? "...but for me it is a duet nevertheless....and i always repent that Rafi didnt sing not even one line of that memorable composition of N.Dutta...
Rafi gave his heart out for those two lines...just listen once to the passion in his Voice ! Awsome !! After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

There is a song in Film:Babul(Naushad), which is sung by Talat, Shamshad and Rafi. In this, Rafi Saab has only one line all through. And that is: "nadiya mein utha hai shor chhayi hai ghata ghanaghor jaana door hai". And he says it so beautifully. Venkat-ji, you have a copy now so if any1 else wants 1 then pls do pass the 1 you have on coz Im abt to remove the upload. Well, all that I could decipher is that the movie belongs to some seventies and the female singer is Asha! Anyways, thanks for the upload. One of the biggest hits of 1950 If you blink you might not hear Rafi saab Ek Thi Ladki-Lara Lappa Lara Lappa-with Lata & G M Durrani Yeah, CM2 Ji. If I remember right, G.M.Durrani says, "Kaam Kuch Karti Nahin, Aur Baandhti Hain Saadiyan" and Rafi Saab faithfully repeats the line! How about the mother of all late entry songs, Kya Mausam Hai from Doosra Aadmi composed by Rajesh Roshan.
Rafi saab comes in with: Yeh mastiyan yeh bahar phir ho chala beqarar main girta ho mujhe thaam lo bheege labon se mera naam lo He totally changes the whole song, and leaves his stamp all over the composition. No other singer could have entered the song like that. Prince Ali |

2 songs which come to my mind , both composed by OPN, are
Hum ko chhodke kahan jaaoge, saiyyan tum bada dukh paaoge from Shrimati 420. Rafi sahab sings only Oh ho , Ha ha...and how sweet it sounds ! Asha ji's song Dekh ke teri nazar bekarar ho gaye from Howrah Bridge. Rafi sahab sings only one stanza Mukh pe paseena halka gora yeh roop haaye Humne toh aaj dekhi barkha mein dhoop haaye.. Dekho yeh ladke saare bechaare dil ke maare tum pe nisaar ho gaye .. What a voice ! Cheers Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

One song coming to my mind is Aa Bhi Ja Bewafa from Raat Ke Raahi!
Asha Bhonsle is singing in the entire song and Rafi sahab is only humming in it. He sounds cute as usual. |
