Thanks Erum ji for the appreciation. I really like the quality of her voice. I think a legend like her should have had her own forum here. Since that is not the case, I had to make a new topic for this. Even my parents were not born when she used to sing. I first discovered her voice
when the movie kismet came on TV once. Later i started searching her songs. I am putting my collection here so that others can also discover her voice.
For those not knowing about her, I am putting some information about her here.
Amirbai Karnataki (born around 1906, died March 3, 1965) was a famous actress/singer and playback singer of the yesteryears and was famous as Kannada Kokila. Mahatma Gandhi was an ardent fan of her song Vaishnav Jaan.

Amirbai Karnataki was born in Bilgi village, District of Bijapur in Karnataka into a lower middle class family. Of all of her five sisters, Amirbai and her elder sister Gauherbai earned fame and fortune. (But according to some sources, Amirbai was elder to Goharbai Karnataki.) Amirbai completed her matriculation and went to Bombay at the age of fifteen. A representative from HMV was so impressed by her singing talent that he made her sing a Qawwali, which became very popular. Her elder sister Gauherbai was an actress and helped Amirbai get a role in the film Vishnu Bhakti in 1934. Initially, Amirbai sang songs in films, but they failed to attain the success she deserved. In 1943, with the release of Bombay Talkies' Kismet, she became popular. All the songs of Kismet became a rage and Amirbai became famous. The man behind the success was the great composer Anil Biswas. She was initially known as a singing star, but at the fall of her career she became a playback singer. She reached her peak by 1947. At this time Lata Mangeshkar became a rising star, so once again Amirbai switched over to acting. In her second innings she mostly played character roles. Amirbai also composed music for Wahab Pictures' Shehnaaz (1948). In the same year she almost left Hindi Cinema for Gujarati and Marwari films. In 1930s, she was associated with, and probably married to, Himalaywala; some sources claim he was abusive to her. Later, she married Badri Kaanchwala, the editor of Paras. She had a paralytic attack in 1965, died just four days later and was buried in her hometown.

I just realised I have uploaded all (?) of the songs of the hit movie Kismat (poster says kismet actually. but then whats in a spelling as long as one gets the wind!). This is one of the important milestone movies of bollywood.
I thought i'll put some details of the movie here itself for those interested.
Kismet is a 1943 Indian Hindi film . Directed by Gyan Mukherjee and produced by Bombay Talkies (while it was in a succession battle between Devika Rani and Sashadhar Mukherjee after owner Himanshu Rai's death). The music of the film is by Anil Biswas, the screenplay by Niranjan Pal and the film stars Ashok Kumar as a pickpocket and trying to be con man who ends up falling in love. He is wrongfully jailed while trying to help his sweetheart but fate ( Kismet) comes to his rescue. The film went on to become a major success. According to the numbers, it has been given the status of All-Time Blockbuster. In the decade of 1940s, this movie made the most money. It's net gross came to Rs.10 million in 1943, which in today's date is equivalent of Rs.632 million. This record was beaten 8 years later by Awaara in 1951.
In this film, 11-year-old Mehmood performed Ashok Kumar’s childhood role. Mumtaaz Shanti was the heroine of this movie.
After this movie most of the team moved out of Bombay Talkies due to the succession battle. Its songs were a big hit. It held the record
for maximum screenings in a cinema hall for years till sholay came along.
